automated eating tracker

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

You won't get the benefits of intermittent fasting if you are having coffee with cream, but that doesn't seem to be your intent, so no loss. I am a coffee drinker during the school year. I do now, after nearly 4 years, try to go without it two mornings a week, but that's new. I'm not hungry much in the morning, either, but now I choose to have a few bites of something most mornings. I go without anything a couple of mornings because I was not getting hungry for lunch too often. But I still likes my coffee! And drinking it black is not appealing at all.

I'm on page 2 now! Wow!
137.7
walked to work (45 minutes)
B: oatmeal (yes, I had it today!) :)
coffee with cream
L: 2 tortillas w/ beans/cheese and few apple slices
D: sweet and sour chicken and rice
Wine

No, I am not trying to do intermittent fasting. :) And luckily, I do not feel more likely to binge if I skip breakfast. :) I don't really have a strong opinion about the breakfast thing, but I did notice that this week in particular I was getting hungry in the morning yesterday and today. Maybe my body will shift and I will begin wanting breakfast. I certainly enjoy eating breakfast on the mornings I don't go to work early. So, for example, this week I only skipped eating solid food in the morning 3 days out of 7.

Tomorrow is my 2nd month weigh-in! Looks like I've lost a couple pounds this month, but I'll wait until tomorrow to reflect on my journey so far.

Oolala, I so understand that black coffee is not tempting!! My husband has tried for years to convince me to go without cream in my coffee, but it's just awful tasting to me that way. But coffee with milk or cream, that is divine on a cold morning. And I drink SO much of it that I think calorie-wise it is the same as having breakfast!

Why all the black coffee hate? Haha. I just LOVE my black coffee, but I know it's not for everyone :)

I used to drink black coffee in high school till I went to Paris and discovered lattes, mochas, cappuccinos....mmmmm :)

My hubby drinks black coffee. I call him boring, he says he's a purist.

2 MONTH CHECK-IN

Linda--my husband would consider himself a 'purist' too about his black coffee. He definitely considers me to be unnecessarily 'altering' my coffee. ;)

139 pounds.
2 pounds lost in one month. That's pretty cool!
I only lost 1 pound the first month. I think that the extra pound was due to two things:
1. school started and helped me regulate my eating more.
2. I began walking to (and sometimes from) work every day!

I am calming down about weight loss, and focusing on habits. I really feel so good about my moderate eating, I think this good feeling is very self-rewarding and helps me stick with it. I like how I feel a little hungry before a meal and look forward to a special time in my day when I eat. I like how I feel satisfied after I eat. I like that meals have become sacred, set apart from the rest of my day.

I love this forum and the support that people here provide one another. I learn so much from reading other people's journeys. I get ideas, I have compassion on others' struggles (and that helps me have compassion for my own challenges, too). I see how compassionate many here are. I am not naturally that way, so it's good for me to see others model encouragement.

I have 4 pounds to lose to be a "healthy BMI", for whatever that's worth. I don't see myself making mods any time soon, because if I lose more weight with a mod, how likely is I will stick with this until I'm old? I really think I can stick to Vanilla NoS forever. It's so reasonable, it's hard to believe it's even a diet. It has also helped me recognize that I WAS overeating before I stopped snacking my way through the day.

I had a tentative goal of reaching 130 by next August, but I don't value that number so much anymore. I value the good feelings I have about myself and my structured eating. I value the good feelings I have about myself when I walk to work in the morning. If I stay 139, I will still stay with NoS.

Did you change your signature from "Free me . . ." to "I have been freed . . .?" That alone is such a powerful statement! You suddenly sound so calm and sure -- I love it!

This really moved me to read and I totally agree with the others that I am so glad you're here and I so value your input!

What you wrote about meals being 'sacred' and set apart from the rest of the day....such a beautiful way of putting it and totally resonated for me. My meals have become sacred times too and I really value that change in how I view them. I've read such a wonderful book recently called 'The Slow-down Diet' and it talks a lot about how our attitude towards our food changes how that food nourishes us, improves digestion and when eaten without stress, results in less fat storage...

Well done automated! So inspired by your attitude towards weight too.

Post by automatedeating » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:40 pm

Thanks for encouragement, everyone! Here's to month 3!

Friday food:
whole milk latte
L: leftover rice and chicken
D: fish and potato chips

Saturday (woke up wanting to gorge all day, uh-oh, let's see how it goes)
139.6
B: toast with jam
samples at Costco
Sees's chocolates (2): California brittle and a peanut butter cup
L: pizza
See's chocolates (2 more): another California brittle and another peanut butter cup
D: Big salad
1/2 fudge brownie

OK, so I definitely went a little wa-wa today, but I tried to stay calm. I had to admit that my mind/body (whichever) was wanting to do some serious stress-relieving eating. I just ate what I was wanting (pizza and chocolates) to eat, and the binge urge seemed to have passed by dinner, at which time I wasn't even very hungry so just had a big salad. I tried to look at it as a normal stress-relief valve for the discipline needed to NoS on N days. As the weeks pass, I need my S days more and more. Instead of going from wild to calming down, I feel like my S days are wanting to get more wild. Well, I will just ride the NoS wave. Surf's up, Dude!

So we'll see how tomorrow, S day #2, goes. :)

There is no reason S days will move in a linear way to calming, especially if you are stress-eating. Getting over stress eating doesn't work that way in the majority of cases. Why expect if of yourself?

If you are going to write down what you eat on S days, which is totally fine, try not to analyze it too much yet. As is said here, mark it and move one. In a few months, you may want to look more.

If there's anything to look at, it might be what would you do with your time if you weren't eating?

Wow I'm so impressed with how active you are with your boys. I really need to start doing that with my girls.

I think you have the right attitude about S days. Once I stop trying to get them to "work" for me & just viewed them as a necessary evil as something I just needed to get through, s days got better for me. I'm sure everyone is different and I still have some moments where I overdo it, but overall this attitude seems to be helping me.

Have a great week!

Only two pieces of See's at a time -- that is real self control! I agree about how wonderful it is to eat a piece of bread and feel normal -- I made another loaf yesterday to replace the stolen one. The only bread I really like is the $5/loaf artisan bread, so okbyxmas' link to a homemade artisan recipe was a real godsend! http://www.simplysogood.com/2013/03/art ... bread.html

This week is hard. I am fighting a constant tension headache, I am so behind at work, there are some personnel issues cropping up to add stress at work, I've had childcare issues and late meetings at work--which looks to be continuing for the next few weeks. Tired, not sleeping well. My 3 meals a day are actually a routine that helps right now. The walking bit is much harder to keep in place. It's funny--you see it written in my daily check-in, but the words don't seem to express how much energy I've had to put into protecting and nurturing this walking habit.

I am curious as to which is my 'keystone habit' (the one on which other good habits hinge): is it NoS, or is it daily walking? For me, NoS is what I started with, and then added on the walking a month in. So maybe NoS is what gives order and a certain calmness to my days. There is no confusion around meals. They just are: simple, sane, and satisfying (there's 3 esses for you!) :)

Sorry you're having some stresses right now but glad you're finding comfort in the structure of NoS.

Isn't it funny how we used to eat for comfort then we had to deal with the bad feelings from that to ? Now our normalized eating is what brings us comfort.

I'm impressed that you're keeping up with the walking. I'm so resistant to exercise right now but hopefully I'll figure out that piece of the puzzle in time.

Hope your child care issues get sorted out soon!

Just in case it helps, I ended up watching a program on TV presented by Dr. Robert Baron at the UC San Francisco Osher Mini Medical School for the Public, where he directs programs for the obese. He says fit trumps fat for good health. He recommended that you never go to bed at night without planning how you will exercise the next day. He said he doesn't even recommend weight loss for those who don't have associated health problems.

Don't know if that answers the question of what will be the keystone.

Oh dear, I feel for you so much, I know how hard it is when work gets tricky and you feel under pressure, hang in there. I think walking is sooo important for you. What i love about walking is that even though |I am overweight and obese when I walk regularly I feel light and full of energy. So I think you are right to protect it and nurture it, this is your bit of time, alone, in the fresh air, feeling free and at ease with your body, hold on to that and keep walking  Great idea as usual from Oolala, thinking of what exercise you will do each night for the next morning - brilliant. I shall definitely try that one as well myself!
I am thinking of you

You sound apologetic about the burger and fries for lunch. You were hungry. They tasted good. No problem. You are not on a diet! (It also sounds like you weren't very hungry even at dinner time and ate simply. That's how it's done.)

Hey automated!

I'd say for me definitely NoS is the hinge and linchpin for everything else. You started walking after you started NoS because NoS put you in a good mindset. I know when I feel out of control and bad about my food, it's hard to feel good about much else including exercise. Positive breeds positive.

Sorry you're having a tough time! For me, that's when my routine (noS and exercise) is so so critical.

Big hug!

S Day for Halloween
137.4
walk to work (45 minutes)
B: coffee with cream
L: chicken fettuccinne (pathetic, unsatisfying, unfilling, microwaveable lunch), apple slices, 1 mini-snickers
Snacks: Reese's Mini-Peanut Butter Cups, apple slices
More snacks: mini nutter butters, mini butterfingers mini snickers
Wine

I am stressed. I am tired. Those two things are my most tempting ingredients for overeating. NoSing has brought this aspect of my eating habits into crystal-clear focus. The question is: what can I really do to handle the stress in a more healthy manner? I am walking daily, and honestly, I am sleep deprived.... so more exercise would truly (I believe) just tax my body further.

Time alone would be heaven, but of course that rarely happens! Oh! I just thought of the perfect November challenge for me!!! It should be something about time away from the family (and messy house) for a couple hours each weekend.

Hang on, automated -- the clocks change this weekend and we get an extra hour of sleep (I hope that's true where you are, too!)

It would be great if you could schedule yourself something on weekends -- my mom insisted on Saturdays off when we were small, she just went downtown shopping or something and my dad had to feed and fend for the eight kids. We loved the time with him and she loved the time away!

EIGHT kids! I guess a person would really want to be around other people a lot to have eight children.

Auto, I used to have all these lists of things I would do instead of eating out of stress. In the back of my mind, I thought I would do those things easily and they would make my world rosy. When that didn't happen, I kept overeating and said, "It doesn't work! I'm hopeless! I'm powerless over food! I CAN"T stop."

. Later, I decided I was just going to have to tolerate the urges and uncomfortable feelings, Just flat out put up with them as is. Now I shop, watch TV, or basically curl up in a ball on the couch- or the equivalent.-and just take it. I figure if I'm not drinking, smoking, or doing drugs instead, I'm ahead of the game. Usually those activities divert me easily; and I don't think about food until it's close to the time to eat anyway. sometimes not. But I never have to do it for long, and it's the exception now. And I've NEVER been sorry I toughed it out and waited for that meal.

The basic idea is that no stress is actually a good enough reason to eat (though you are not a sick, weak dufus if you do actually eat), and when you recognize 1) that it's just a harmless neural pattern that drives those thoughts and urges to overeat or snack, 2) that those thoughts are not the truth, and 3) that you can change the pattern by ignoring them, it gives you an edge. You know you just have to outlast them and there's probably never more than three hours at any one time to get through. You won't be doing yourself any damage by not giving in. You are a grown-up and you can tolerate these annoying, even nerve-wracking feelings for a few hours, just like you could get through a few hours of a fussy baby or sitting in the dentist's chair. (I've had a lot of work done.) It's temporary and good times are coming!

I took an S day too, yesterday, and did not feel good. I hope one day to get to the "have one nice dessert" mode. But for now, when my main intake consists of sugar, caffeine, white flour (also known as sugar) and more sugar, then alcohol, my body does not react by feeling calm.

I have found that N days are easier because they are less stressful.

N day habits are definitely less stressful than overeating, but it takes many experiences to have that become so clear that the motivation to face down the urgest to overeat gets stronger than the desire. It cannot be just intellectual knowledge. Some people feel it more definitively earlier than others. I think there's a lot of luck involved.

Luck favors the prepared mind. Keep practicing N day habits!

Friday, Week 10

Post by automatedeating » Sat Nov 02, 2013 2:40 am

Thanks, all, for encouragement and suggestions.

Oolala, I especially find myself mulling over your point about deciding--no eating when I feel stressed. It's just not an option. That's interesting, because that is the strategy I use to avoid snacking on N days.

B: whole milk latte
L: pizza
D: minestrone soup and bread

Today I felt a little surreal between lunch and dinner (and I realize this is a common feeling): I am thinking about eating, wanting to eat, but then I think--am I hungry? No. What do I want to eat? Nothing in particular. So I am daydreaming about eating some imaginary, nonexistent food. Weird. And then, I analyze my feeling a bit more. Guess what? Not hunger, it's more like.... nausea. But definitely not hunger. Tonight I went about making dinner (soup and bread) without enthusiasm. I ate it and it did taste good, and now my nausea is gone. I am rambling, but I can't help but wonder why I feel so blah/out-of-sorts in the afternoons. To summarize: I feel fine in the mornings, and experience true hunger before lunch (and I like the "true hungry" feeling!). I feel gross in the afternoons, and then fine again after dinner. Thankfully, I don't suffer from late-night cravings.

I've evidently hit a rough patch. I should have seen this coming. Every quarter by this mid-point I am in survival mode for second half of the quarter. Ugh! I started NoS before school started, and the stress just ramps up, up and up. From here on in a typical quarter, I snap at my kids more, I cook fewer meals, I clean less regularly, I ignore my husband more. Here I am, now starting to have to "white-knuckle" it until Christmas break. Probably if someone were reading my entries, they'd think it uncanny how I am falling apart. This is kind of embarrassing--NoS is peeling away my protective layers against life. I am missing my usual coping techniques, and having to do some daily psychoanalysis! ;)

I feel like I have to apologize to everyone. I don't want to be a downer. I think Tessy mentioned something about feeling bad for people supporting her on her thread. I'll try to remember that, because of course no one felt burdened by that--we all just want to help each other on our journeys.

I know that the spunky, perky me will be back soon. And then I'll have this written log as evidence that my dark moods pass quickly! :)

Hey automated, you should never feel bad about venting here! You should think of this thread as your own personal journal to help you with your journey. People may stop by to offer suggestions or encouragement but ultimately this is suppose to be a tool to help you.

Venting is an important part of this process and writing down your feelings is a great coping method for dealing with your feelings between meals. So please don't apologize for being human!:)

On another note, even though I'm a sahm I've been noticing things unraveling a bit lately for me too. Cooking less, laundry going undone etc... I know I just need to regroup and get back to my schedule because I feel so much better when everything is running smoothly. It also means saying no to things (or people) sometimes. Anyway, it happens to all of us at times so just hang in there and hopefully you can find some time to rejuvenate this weekend.

Remember: Happy Momma= Happy Family :)

I have found that the less weight you have to lose, the slower it comes off. You are close to your goal weight, so 3 pounds lost is amazing. Best of luck, love reading your meals.

It looks like you're doing well. Don't feel bad about venting. Trying to diet while taking care of your family and managing your other responsibilities is HARD. It looks like you're doing a good job.

automated, I used to teach adults and though I loved it, I also remember that feeling of crawling toward the oasis on my belly! And I am sure as we get deeper into the holiday season, you won't be the only one on here venting! Do what you need to do to keep your head on straight -- if that means letting the laundry pile up or falling back on frozen dinners, or venting on the forum, it's all good!

I still feel cruddy a lot in the afternoons. And a lot of weekends. too. That's just my life right now. I still eat sometimes over it, but MUCH less often (esp. on N days). LIfe doesn't always feel good to me no matter how much I believe in it! I've done a lot to work with this and much has helped, but here I am. I'm just glad I'm not using food the way I used to -- most of the time.

Oolala, you feel a little sick/not hungry in the afternoons too? Is it because I am no longer snacking? Is it related to emotions or something?

For me, I'm pretty sure it's my job. It is not the best fit for me, but in 20 years of searching, I never found the right fit and I felt I had to get serious about making some money and preparing for retirement. I'm a teacher and experience a lot of stress with uncooperative students in just about every class, so when the students go home, there seems to be a residue of anxiety left over. (I've also been diagnosed with general anxiety disorder.) It manifests as these vague sensations that I used to interpret at a need for food. They still feel like that, but I know better, so I ignore them. I just accept them now as part of the fabric of my life. I've done lots of therapies to counteract them, but sometimes they don't work. So what? I could just as easily be bipolar or a diabetic or have some other chronic problem that isn't going to be solved soon and actually feels even worse. When I accepted that, that life has ongoing concerns, and I would sometimes have irritating, anxious, but ultimately tolerable feelings a few hours a day, it got easier to just say no to the urges to eat outside of meal time. They are really small potatoes in the big scheme of things. At least, that's how I see them now. That outlook has sometimes relieved me of them, but even when it doesn't, it doesn't matter because I am not caught up in thinking I'm successful only when they go away. All I have to do is wait a few hours to eat. That I can do!

Thank you very much for your insight. I think I might fit the bill for generalized anxiety order, too...... it seems to be worsening over time. I suspect I take a little too much responsibility on my shoulders for how much my students learn and how much they enjoy the process.

So, you're right. Feeling a little yucky in the afternoons is not that terrible in the big scheme of things. I can survive that.

Both caffeine and alcohol reportedly worsen the symptoms. And not surprisingly, I imbibe quite a bit of both of those substances. Hmmm. Well, I still want to stick with just one habit at a time! Not ready to tackle those habits yet!

thank you so much for stopping by my thread automatedeating. I feel so much better now! This is a wonderful community. And I feel the same in the afternoon only for me it's a little bit of boredom mixed with the fact that suddenly all those unresolved emotions are not swallowed down with snacks anymore. But at least this way I can just let myself feel it.

OK, here's my laugh for the day. My boys often play this game where they think of three wishes (and wishing for more wishes is always against their rules). Well, they bug me and bug me until I wish too. Here were my three today:
I WISH:
1. when I come home from work that there was a delicious and healthy meal waiting for me.
2. when I come home from work my house was clean.
3. that I could order anything I want on Amazon for free.

Oh, and I had an epiphany today:
I would rather be hungry than not be hungry in the afternoon. Hunger gives me something to look forward to.

Today was a day of eating leftovers! I tend to not be that hungry one day, but then the next day have "make-up" hunger! I think for the most part it's fine, and nothing for me to "fix". I just need to eat bigger meals when I start to get ravenously hungry. I don't want to make myself so calorie-deficient over the course of a few days that my body thinks it's being seriously deprived.

I have been at the upper-most levels of stress in my worklife in the past week or two, and yet three meals a day is sustaining my nutritional needs and warding off my old emotional snacking habits.

My ankle has been hurting (a ligament or something). It was a little scary to read KCCC's post about her foot. I really would be so depressed if I had to stop walking. Whoa! i can't believe I just typed that! Wow, walking must becoming some sort of decent habit for me, although until I just typed that sentence i would have sworn I was white-knuckling that habit.

Now are you ready for some deep psychoanalysis from my childhood? :) So, when I was little, I was quite lonely. I looked forward to Mister Rogers every day and I was very "bonded" with him.... like a substitute father figure. Anyway, I always thought it was cool how he changed his clothes and shoes. Alright, so here I am, 37 years old, and I change just like Mister Rogers. When I get to work, I put on my work clothes and work shoes, then when it's time to go home, I change back into my walking clothes. I think in some strange way I feel connected to Mister Rogers when I do this ritual. Ooooooh, deeeeeeep. And, yes, if you stuck your head in my office around that time, you might hear me singing the song and tossing a shoe in the air. "It's such a good feeling, to know you're alive, It's such a happy feeling, you're growing inside!"

That is very inspiring! I hope that my yoga routine will become that soon!

And your Mister Rogers confession made me smile. I think we all have childhood heros we bonded with. When I'm really down I like to watch old Disney Films.

Hang in there. Tomorrow is Friday and yore doing great w both habits! Just had to say how much I loved mr Rogers too. I saw him live once and proudly hung my autographed copied of the neighborhood in my room for years.

I also used to talk about the Brady brunch like they were my family. I think I craved that kind of family growing up with a single working mom things were chaotic at times (my mom is great though).

Wanted to write more but have to pack for our trip tomorrow. I hope work lets up for you soon!

I wonder if I'll ever NOT need some method of accountability for eating 3 meals a day and only have desserts on the weekend? I know it's premature to over think this, but it sure drives home the point that eating habits/drives are as strong as any other so-called "addictive' pathway. It's as though everyone is addicted to food.....and I include all the healthiest, most regulated eaters you can think of. Those people have just trained their addictions in a positive direction.

We are all "automated eaters", come to think of it. It's just a question of what food habits we have automated.......

My developing opinions about regulated eating and the habits surrounding our food intake have me taking a LONG look at the habits I am helping my kids develop. What they do now is most likely what they'll do when older. The snacks have reined in significantly for them since I've been on NoS, but they are still finding ways to eat sweets every day (1 piece of halloween candy after lunch and dinner, but other junk seems constantly creeping in).

Stressful times, but some great conclusions, automated: that you can rely on the three meal habit in the midst of stress goes so far toward making it a permanent routine in your life! And wanting to pass on the good habits to your kids (instead of letting the kids sidetrack you into junk food!) is really great. That's probably more effective in making a parent accountable than anything else.

Loved your Mr Rogers memories. He was a rock for so many little kids who were missing their dads, for whatever reason. I grew up in his hometown (IRL, not the one with the castle!) and even in college a Mr. Rogers sighting was an exciting event!

I don't know about "accountability" outside of our own tracking or noticing, but I am pretty sure I will die with my desire for lots of delicious food well intact. It's biological. It's up to culture to tame biology, and our melting pot has become a pot belly, and it's spreading its muffin top globally.

I am reclaiming culture one plate at a time. My accountability will be my pants. They will tell me, very cruelly and with humiliation, if I am on track.

138.1
Brunch: coffee with cream, hashbrowns, eggs, toast ..... Delicious

Goal is to eat a light lunch, then have salad with whatever else I eat at dinner.

L: spaghetti
D: burrito (obviously didn't have a salad as hoped for)
Dessert: frosty, 3 hard candies

Ate a lot today. I feel ok, it wasn't insane eating, but definitely more than my body needed.

B: 2 bowls of cereal, 1 maple bar
coffee with milk
L: burger and fries

OK, so I am "mad" and "sad" about various things recently, and I am craving more comfort food, but NoS still helps me keep the use of food as a comfort to three meals a day. I appreciate that. I try to see this with calm curiosity.

not going to work today, but I'd like to fit in a walk around the neighborhood sometime this afternoon.

B: hashbrowns, eggs, bacon, toast
coffee with milk

Psychologically, I'm feeling better than a week ago. This weekend I set up my computer so that I am not alerted to new work emails. And I think it has helped! I didn't think about work emails at all since I wasn't getting an alert every time one comes in! I am considering doing this every evening after 5pm and every weekend.

I haven't felt compelled to weigh myself, either, which could be interpreted as not obsessing.... or interpreted as easing up on my NoS commitment. Maybe I just won't overthink it. Maybe I'll take a nap.....

OK, up from my nap and still tired. My 4-yr old was up much of the night with flu-like symptoms. Needless to say, I was up most of the night, too. So I still feel groggy.

L: Planned on mashed potatoes and meatloaf; but one bite of the meatloaf was enough to disgust me. Quickly added two mandarin oranges to the plate instead. So now I'm not really satisfied. Plan B: Heat up some milk and reheat some coffee from the morning and make myself a latte.

I'd be curious to see how much fatigue correlates with hunger. I know lots of studies talk about when we're sleep-deprived we crave carbs. I certainly find that when I am actively sleepy (but it's not an OK time to sleep) is when I want to eat. If I'm sleepy and it is appropriate to go to bed, no way am I hungry. So perhaps my body thinks food will wake me up. That never works.

D: meatballs and mashed potatoes

Hi automated

I think it's great you're not feeling compelled to weigh. I know in general I just feel better in my skin on NoS because I'm not binging, permasnacking which makes me feel so ick! Hopefully you're feeling that too.

As for sleep, I know that I reach for food when I'm tired because I'll give myself permission to take a break for food but not just to sit & do nothing. Hope you can catch up on sleep soon!

Just coming by to say hi, and cheer you on. Sorry life is stressful right now.

Loved your epiphany (sp?) about "actually liking walking." (And don't worry too much about your foot - I did a number on mine, and didn't get good care for a long time, which is why it dragged on so long. Ironically, my exercise habits are really, really strong now, because I had to pay attention to them for so long.)

Just sending good wishes. Teachers take on so much, and get so much less respect than they deserve!

Yeah, Joasia, sometimes my weight now "flucuates" to 136.something. Looks like I'm down about another 2 pounds for this month. A massage sounds divine.

Thanks, jw, I'm doing much better now. I had two regular nights of sleep in a row, does wonders. And I'm not feeling as panicked, anxious, or quite as much dread anymore, so hopefully I'm on the upswing of my dark mood.

automated, I just saw your post about being the meanest person on the boards -- no way! I thought I was! I am very outspoken and tend not to cushion my opinions with a lot of disclaimers. But you are right -- the spirit of this board is invariably kind. Aside from moderation, maybe we're learning how to feel mean and still be nice here! :D

D: macaroni, salad, chips w/ salsa, few bites of trailmix, grape juice

Tonight I was at a birthday party and I had so much fun eating! I ate seconds on everything I loved, but somehow didn't eat so much I felt overfull. I really thought about the items on the buffet table, and considered, what do I want? what sounds yummiest to me? And..... get this...... I didn't even eat a SINGLE piece of pizza!! I didn't want it. I didn't want pizza! Get OUT! And then (are you sitting down?) I had NO DESIRE for ice cream cake!!!! OK, so background: ask my husband my two favorite foods: ice cream cake and pizza. Oh, and here is another "first": I was eating my second helping of chips and salsa, and realized....I'm no longer enjoying these chips and this salsa. And I stopped. Normally I would have felt compelled to eat every last damn chip on my plate. What a weird, but fun, evening.

And so funny what you said about chips & dip. I could definitely live off of those esp guacamole & salsa. I made my own salsa last night. Was so good! :)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Oh boy that's funny. I was reading your food list from yesterday and was thinking it didn't seem like very much. Then again I'm a big eater!

But for the issue at the moment of true hunger. Drinks, drinks drinks to get you through. Milk, latte, wine, juice or whatever you think is going to pull you through. Yes you can do this!!

Thanks Linda. Why is it the thought of drinks flew my mind, when they are so recommended? Duh, why didn't I think of that? Thanks for helping my hunger-addled mind think of a strategy! :) I'm already down to just 90 minutes 'til dinner! A glass of milk should do the trick.

5 minute ballet barre

B: 2 oatmeal packets (more than normal!)
coffee with cream
L: 2 bean and cheese burritos; apple (much more than normal!)
Dude, I am STILL hungry and wanting to eat today, a lot like yesterday!
I think I just need to eat more food so that I don't end up losing the structure to my eating. I'm not sure why I'm so hungry. It could be:
a) hormones, PMS or something
b) psychology (etc etc)
c) increased exercise is making me hungry (but if that's the case, why didn't it happen 10 weeks ago)?
d) my body is starting to feel "starved" like it's on a diet, and my hunger is increasing as my body's way to return to homeostatic "set point" (the slightly overweight spot it likes to be!)

So, strategies anyone? My current one is: eat so that I am not hungry! And let the chips (ha!) fall where they may. I know I can't do these eating habits long-term if I'm this hungry every day. I also shouldn't overreact to this current ravenous monster I've become! I've only been really hungry for a couple days. The last couple of weeks I would say my hunger has been amping up.

As many of you have probably already noticed, I am not exactly Ms. Healthnut. So I think I'll take the boys out for some seriously calorie-dense food and see if that doesn't shut up my inner hungry hippo (and I mean that in the most gentle of ways toward myself). :)

D: beef chimichanga, beef taco, chips, salsa, diet coke, sour cream, guacamole, beans, rice. I piled my plate vertically and had to laugh at how it looked like I was massively overeating. Now I'm just thirsty!

Was reading your post from Sunday and had to smile. I don't know if I am happy or sad about the fact I don't really enjoy chocolate like I used to. I ate all sorts of junk this weekend and the most satisfying enjoyable thing I ate was a slab of French bread with butter and some cran apple butter from trader joes. Go figure.

I wish I had answers and insight on your hunger.

Have a great night

Has it gotten really cold where you are, automated? The first week of cold here, I was ravenous! And I have noticed an increased wish for peanut butter on the bread, lentil soup instead of vegetable soup, just heartier food all round. I think your instincts are good to go for calorie density. Best of luck!

i think all the things you listed could be factors automated, I have at least a week of every month where I'm hungrier than normal.

Another suggestion is (I could be way off though) that because of the exercise you have built up your metabolism has speeded up so your body is craving more fuel?

try not to worry about it too much and trust your body, give yourself something a little more for lunch, fill your plate more and see if it levels off any then you can always decrease in a few weeks if necessary.

I suppose we all haven't been in tune with our bodies for so long its all very confusing!!

Definitely eat so you're not hungry (unless it's the normal No s hunger building up before a meal) what I mean is make sure once you have eaten your meal you are full and satisfied.

Thanks everybody, for the support and ideas. I did eat enough last night to be completely full and satisfied. Lets see how today goes!

137.7
5 minutes ballet barre (ouch--tweaked a muscle!)
walked to work (45 minutes)
B: whole milk latte
L: 2 bean and cheese burritos, 1 cup of high fat, high protein, high sugar Zoi honey yogurt! Trying to stave off the hunger.

And it didn't work. I'm feeling a gnawing hunger again today! ARGH.

In other news (or maybe just time to face my fears), I have a deep-seated fear of completely giving up on NoS. I have a tendency to just throw myself into something and go overboard. I have a fear of... failure? I guess that's it. I'm afraid of failing, so I fight tooth and nail to NOT fail, but what will happen when I do? I can't possibly live the rest of my life and not fail at NoS.

It's been 13 weeks of trying, serious trying, to keep me NoSing. Some weeks have been easier than others, but when I look long-term, I realistically can't maintain this level of effort. Or can I? I have read so many posters say that NoS gets easier with time, but I'm finding that it has gotten harder in the past couple of weeks.

Maybe this hunger I feel (at this very moment) is actually just fatigue and anxiety masquerading as hunger. I find it hard to believe that I am very hungry after the size of the lunch I ate today. If that is the case, then I am still learning to recognize true hunger. Early on with NoS, it was clear that I had urges to eat that had no hunger behind them. More recently, I feel truly hungry..... but I guess it still could be psychological. Is this some serious baggage removal, or what? And just how much food does my short fairly inactive, 30-something body actually need?

D: French dip sandwich, chips
wine

This was definitely a day where I was "feeling" very hungry before dinner, but then a normal-sized meal was perfectly fine for me. So, I'm fine. I survived my emotional journey of Thursday, Week 13 of NoS.

Love how you kept updating and took us right through to the happy ending, automated! Whew!
All kinds of things can feel like hunger. I remember when I quit smoking years ago, the tobacco withdrawal felt like immense hunger, a deep gnawing in my belly. And I kept wanting to put things in my mouth, of course, LOL!
Good for you for holding out!

Also wanted to let you know that I got a gift certificate for amazon recently and I spent it on -- ta-da -- a pedometer! Time to get moving -- and you are the inspiration for that!

Glad you seem to be feeling back on track. Normal ups & downs are normal but so important to stick it out & see this all the way through. I promised myself to stick with this for a year and then re-evaluate my needs at that time.

Have a great weekend!

138.5
B: eggs, bacon, toast, mandarin orange
Coffee with milk
L: frosted mini wheats
S: bowl of chips
D: chicken pasta, watermelon slices, piece of pumpkin pie, lemonade

Feel like I've been eating all day, but when I look at my list, it's not horrifying. More than I need, yes, but not completely overboard.

I gained two pounds this week with all of my giant meals. And my monthly weigh-in falls on Monday. What luck.

If that's your idea of overeating then I'm in big trouble! :)

I have noticed a Sunday night pattern. I am not as hungry! I almost wonder if I am a little more relaxed from the weekend.... interesting. I can see this pattern as I look back through my weekend posts.

WIDRT:
1 hour walk with a friend
took the boys swimming at local pool. My 7 year old passed his swim test and got to go in the deep end without me!

I'm still pondering my S days for December. My 7 year old has a birthday on a weekend, so that one is easy. Then there's the holidays. I am going to have to see which family we will be with, and then I think I could pick one S day for each family get-together. That would be 4 S days outside of weekends, but I personally think that's pretty reasonable for December.

Tentative plan:
S days (non-weekend): 17th, 24th, 25th, 31st

Glad today went better for you. Your plan for December looks very reasonable. We don't celebrate Xmas so just taking off the 31st for New Year's Eve.

Congrats on your son passing his swim test. It's so nice when they get a little more independent in the pool! I'm so jealous of all your good exercising. I really need to get my butt in gear.

3 month check in!

Biggest thoughts of the month: what does it really feel like to be hungry? I could have sworn I was hungry last week when I wanted to really eat a lot of food. But then, over the weekend, I wasn't that hungry. Why do I get hungry some days when it appears I've eaten plenty? This is my calm curious challenge for month 4 (and I'm sure beyond): What does true hunger feel like? Is it always the same sensation?

You walk 90 min to/from work and yet you say you need a workout routing? I think that's a good stab at urban ranging already.

I find your month 4 thought inspiring. I never thought of setting myself a thought-of-the-month so I will from now on!

L: spaghetti, few chips, apple
D: "poor tiger" -- thai beef salad, yum!

eschano, I am happy that I've been walking consistently (for 10 weeks) but I don't have any intense exercise (such as shovelglove). I am discovering that I have a STRONG aversion to intense exercise, despite having done a lot of it at various times in my life. I appear to have a negative association with it, rather than the craving that some people develop for the endorphin high. I tried starting some ballet/pilates work last week, and have already fallen off that wagon. Well, it is what it is and I will not beat myself up. I am very committed to developing the walking habit, so I'll just continue to focus on that and 3 meals a day for the time being. Walking doesn't even feel like "exercising" to me, so I don't feel honest counting it as real exercise. Obviously I have some thinking issues in this area. It's almost as if being an athlete when I was younger works against me when it comes to maintaining a long-term activity program.

My other comment for today is that my weight has been fluctuating more than normal (up 2 pounds, then down 2 pounds, then back up 2 pounds). I know that may not seem a large fluctuation, but for me, it actually is. I've been observing with calm curiosity that my weight is quite stable for the most part. The last week it has not been stable. This fluctuation followed a week of high salt intake, so it could be my body is still finding its balance again after all that salt.

Watched a GREAT movie today called,
"Medical Mavericks: Diet and Disease" It's about self-experimentation in the area of scientific discoveries regarding vitamins, etc. I loved it! :) You can find it on youtube.
