NoSnacker Daily Check-in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

I went with a male friend to see "Invictus," the film about Nelson Mandela's life after he was released from prison and when he inspired the soccer team there to win the World's Cup, I believe. I balled almost the whole last half of the movie. My friend: nothin'

But we also went to see The Blind Side. Guess who was shuddering in his seat then?

To his credit, he also teared up during the signature song in the play Wicked.

Thanks everyone.....

Just this morning he was pushing the snack idea. I have a glycemic index book and it says 3 meals and 3 snacks...he had to point this out to me....I said yup I don't do that...I love the concept but not for me...he hung his head and walked away...too funny...

You don't have to point this out to him, but no matter what diet book idea anyone touts to you, you can rest assured that none has ever been shown to have a better than 5-10% success rate over five years than any other. And they certainly can't compete with the slimness ratings of Italy and France, where up until recently, people rarely snacked. Tens of millions of success cases.

Besides, for you, this isn't just about losing weight. It's about finding a system that's easy to implement permanently that will keep you from overeating. There is nothing easy about having to have access to the perfect sized snacks and meals- and their size becomes much more important the more often you eat-all day.

Oolala,
I'm curious if your time on this forum has given you greater insight into the success rate of NoS compared with the abysmal 5-10% rate of typical diets.

1/4 - S; My day was pretty moderate until dinner...I think in most part it was because I did not make it out to the grocery store and didn't feel like cooking...and I knew what I was doing was way too much food and I did pay the price with heartburn during the night..which I do not have when I don't over stuff myself.

Today, I plan on making it to the store and eating dinner before I head off to the hospital - my daughter is being induced at 6:30 tonight, so I'm in for a long night.

Whoaaaa a new grandson will be arriving by tomorrow :)

Thanks....he went on a 50 day juice fast for religious reasons and dropped 50-lbs and I kept telling him - losing weight should be something you can maintain for the rest of your life..not just to drop the weight...as sure enough he has gained it all back and then some...he is disabled at the moment and not much movement so that attributes to his current weight gain...

Deb, that is awesome about your new grandson coming!

Even though it's an S day and you can have whatever you want, I bet you will be full from your dinner and won't need any food while you're at the hospital. If you're like me, you can often mix up excitement with the desire to eat. But in the end, it doesn't really add any pleasure to the celebration. And there are always beverages. I'd probably end up mixing a decaf with a hot chocolate in the hospital cafeteria, if I felt I needed something.

That's tough about your husband's disability. I don't exercise consistently even though I can. I need to use it or I might lose it.

Hope you have an S day that leaves you feeling good.

Sunday wasn't so great with food, but Monday was...actually only ate two meals because that is how my day turned out....kind of proud of that, in the past I would have panick thinking oh no, I should eat my three meals..but instead I thought of others that during certain times it is just not possible to eat a meal.

My grandson Angelo was born at 6:19am yesterday, weighing in at 7lbs 15ozs, 22 inches long.

Both my daughter and grandson are doing well.

I plan on taking a few days off this week to help her out with the other two children and household chores.

We are in blizzard conditions now and she'll be coming home from the hospital today.

Didn't sleep Sunday night, and had to work Monday..even though I tried to sleep it would not find me. Went to bed at 7:30 last night and hope to shake off that lack of sleep feeling today..I don't know how people in professions that have to work doubles manage...

Oooo! I've been waiting for the good news! Warmest wishes to your family.

Wow, I am so spoiled living in SoCal. I thought a blizzard would stop everything (not babies coming, but from driving home!), but I guess it has to be pretty severe. It's amazing that humans have figured out ways around these things, though the solutions can create new problems... but enough!

Deb, if you're willing to share, what kind of work do you do?

Good luck catching up on your rest and getting back in the rhythm of meals.

Hi, I'm a project manager for a bank. Always wanted to be a counselor or writer when I was growing up but never followed my dreams. No I manage projects that can be pretty scary at times especially since this job fell into my lap..I was a admin for 17 years at the company and my boss was leaving and helped me find a new position within the bank like 8 years ago...I should have took the easy way out and stayed an admin!

Thanks...hope to be feeling better soon.

My daughter and baby have to stay until tomorrow..driving bans all over the place her in WNY.

So my dear husband went to the store last night and was so kind to buy me "hershey chocolate drops" one of my favs and a bag of trail mix...instead of saying you idiot don't you remember I don't eat that during the week...but I was nice and said thanks hon...

I put them away this morning for my weekend treats..and it truly didn't bother me at all..which I was amazed..I had no desire to eat them...

I think in part was because I had a great dinner "eggplant parm" and ate enough of it that I was happy....my tangerine was just a nice top off to my dinner...

I hope to have more days like that where I just say to myself it will be there for the weekend, no need to eat now...how freeing that is..

On Spark, there is a darling young woman who says she has asked her husband countless times not to bring certain foods home, and he keeps doing it. It makes me feel bad for her just thinking about it because she feels so compelled to eat them, and isn't getting a chance to get some distance from them. (She is not a No S-er and I am cautious about gushing about it outside of the NOS team there, though I have gotten a few converts.) Some people assert that the other person is sabotaging on purpose, but I don't think so. I'm reminded that I used to do a kind of nuzzling, growling affectionately playful move on the ear of an old boyfriend. He never got nastily mad but he told me he didn't actually like it several times, but I kept doing it. I got such a kick out of doing it that I had a hard time giving it up. I think it was associated with being able to nuzzle a child, and how they usually like it, and it made me feel that I was being loving. I wanted so much for it to be pleasing that I thought maybe I could win him over to it! But he finally explained one time that the noise in his ear, even without obvious growling, felt almost painful. I quit doing it, finally accepting that it didn't have the effect I wanted, and it wasn't personal. We had fun being affectionate in so many other ways that I realized it didn't matter. I imagine your husband delights so much in the idea that he has pleased you that it's hard to give it up. Plus, it's pretty easy to accomplish. Or maybe he secretly wants access to the sweets?

It sounds like he spent about the same amount of money as it would have cost for a small bouquet. Is that something that would be touching to you, to have him get you flowers? I wonder if there's a way to hint it to him. I don't know how these things work in marriage. I certainly used to read tons of relationship books, both on getting and keeping one, but it never happened, so I don't say much anymore, since for me, it's all theory! I know as a teacher it can bug me when people who have never spent all day, day after day, in a room with teenagers trying to get them to meet educational standards know all about how to make it happen.

But I'll still weigh in this much: I think in your case, you may also be on to something by just saying "thanks' and putting the sweets away. It might be all you need to have it out of sight.

The great thing is you don't have to decide now!

I think that is great that you could put the treats away for later. Maybe gently remind him some time about your weekday rules, but not when he has just brought stuff home?

NoSnacker, this is exactly what my husband does!! And I have found that the simplest way to handle it is to smile, and put it away.

And I think oolala is right about my husband's particular motivation: he is trying to make me happy, show love, etc., and he knows that for both of us, fun food has been a way to feel happy over the years.

My best defense is to remember that if I eat it, I am not truly giving my husband joy (because he does know I don't snack anymore), and I giving myself a lot of grief. Cliched, but: To thine own self be true!

Oh for sure he is showing me love and enjoys seeing me enjoy my treats :). He did mention in the past it is the only thing he can do for me seeing he is currently disabled. And right in the past it was our fun time to munch. Thankfully he has only bought me stuff twice since I started No S again.

Funny but he'll say you are doing it all wrong, I see you eat right and exercise and still don't lose weight..like all hard work for nothing..

Then I have to remind him that I binge a days worth of food when he is not looking hence why I'm fat...he naps a lot so I have plenty of time to eat...sometimes my binges would happen when I'm working from home in the afternoon I would start to eat and not stop all day.

The good habits are building and that is my goal, not hurting my body with the binges is important..I'm 56 and how much longer can my body suffer I ask myself.

I'm so stressed as a bunch of us from work have been sold to another company and trying to figure out all the details, I wanted to help my daughter with the new baby and can't seem to take off from work because I need to take care of things and a new project I'm on that the transition of handover wasn't very smooth to me...yadda yadda I know..the stress was so unbearable yesterday I was hoping it wouldn't trigger an urge to binge.

Today another stressful day, I go to the office to meet new business..thankfully 35 of us will be transitioning..and thankfully I have a job as my company plans on downsizing down the road anyway.

Oh, this is a stressful time for you, NoSnacker! Treat yourself extra well at mealtimes if you can -- downsizing and mergers and new expectations can sure keep you awake at night and wanting to permasnack by day! Also, with a new boss in the picture, it's hard to take time for your daughter and grandbaby. :( Hang in there!

Hi NoSnacker,
I'm late to the party, but wanted to offer heart-felt congratulations on the birth of your grandson, Angelo!
Sorry it's a stressful and busy time. I hope you can find time to enjoy the baby as well as meet your work obligations. NoS can sometimes give more peace in the midst of chaos, rather than being "one more thing to worry about". Hope it's like that for you!

If he can buy candy, he can buy flowers, a card, a fridge magnet...start hinting, girl! I'd bet there are things YOU think he can do even if he is disabled. Not necessarily moving around things.

That's a drag not getting to hang out with the new baby. That's what happens when you're a big wig.

Consider resolving at some point, when you're really, really ready, giving up eating snacks alone on one S day a week. If your husband is not awake and present, you're alone. But don't do it just to try it. Wait until it feels like "I can do this and it's a really good idea."

Ya but he talks too much so I can't enjoy my food , so I enjoy eating without all the gibber jabber....he talks right through my dinner...I'm a quiet person, he is a social person...I guess I shouldn't complain, some husbands don't want to talk at all..I think in my household it is visa versa!

But something to consider...

I meant when you said you could kind of binge eat while he was asleep. Or are you doing a lot of your overeating on S days at meals?

I'll stop making suggestions until you've put in another couple of months with mostly N day compliance. No use planning for reductions now when they may happen spontaneously.

That work stuff sounds really stressful. Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself to something non food that brings your stress down. Bath? Reading? Comedy? I hope you get to spend more time with your daughter and her baby.

My meals on S days are pretty much the same as N days, what happens is I start with one thing and keep getting up and going back for more and more and next thing I know I just binged. Although mostly since I have been back I think I just have over indulged a lot..and perhaps binged a couple times. But seems I have forgotten about it already

Middleager - thanks so much for your kind words!

The new company I'm going to work for shared their package letter and guess what "it is much better than where I'm at now"...medical is better which is a biggie....I get to work at my current job with the same people for at least 2 years so no major life changes there..so relieved!

I won't quit writing to ya- just not about S days for now. Try to take the attention away from them. What else could your S days be about besides whether you eat too much on them or not? What would be more interesting than that?

What would be more interesting is not worrying about it at all which I'm trying to do...binging doesn't feel good and makes me sick so I want to focus in feeling better...I feel so good on N days and feel so crappy on S days...I guess it would be nice to figure out how come I won't allow myself to feel good on S days..not binging would feel good.

I started to read a new book today, Gone Girl...a couple of my friends loved it and recommended it so that will be my pleasure today while hubby watches foot ball.

Have my meals and snacks planned out for the rest of the day...I feel like I did a free fall drop yesterday...darn food..mmm wait it is not the FOOD it is ME...

I don't think trying to figure out why you won't let yourself feel good is the best tactic. Better just to get very clear that to feel good, you have to wait longer to eat and/or eat a lot less when you do eat.

Maybe say to yourself, "I may feel like eating now, but I know I'll feel even better if I wait for a couple of hours (or whatever). I can eat this food then or just have a great meal that I'd like even better. I know from experience I won't feel that good if I keep eating whenever it occurs to me. I guess I can't wait until it doesn't occur to me to eat."

Try not to worry about S days too much. Easier said than done--I know believe me! They may be just the weekly reminder you need to carry you strong through your N days.

Let me know how your book is--I need something new to read!

Monday was a pretty good day...seems the urge to binge is just not there during the week..if I get a thought about something, I acknowledge it and just let the thought not have any significance.

I guess after reading the Brain over Binge I have learned those lower thoughts that lead to a binge are just that lower thoughts, past survival instincts caused from my dieting days..and that my true self really has control if I chose not to hang on to the urges that can come as fast as they can go depending on hard I hang on..

I was taught over the years that we have NO control over our binges when in fact we do..there may be triggers/urges but we still have control over our binges.

"Enemy" of motivation (habit) is the tendency to see yourself as the hapless victim of forces (or urges) over which you have no control."

I also have to say my friends here on No S and Spark really help me to think about things and not to be hard on myself for my weekends..so refreshing..

My body loves me all the more for not binging, especially when I don't wake up with heartburn during the night..that was a biggie for me...

Thanks friends!

Wow didn't realize I didn't check in yesterday!

Yesterday was a good day and today is turning out pretty good as well.

I truly have come to respect just eating 3 squares a day..strange thing to say but I don't have to decide what snack I should eat when I feel a tinge of hunger...I feel safe not making a decision to snack...like the rule is in place and respect this rule because it keeps me sane around food..

I'm really hungry now and in the middle of cooking dinner and so looking forward to enjoying it because I am hungry...

Yummy......to my tummy!

Last night was pretty good...was getting the "It's Friday" feeling....time to party/cut loose....but was able to stick to my plan....seems it could be very easy to just throw in the towel and go for the binge...because that is what I typically end up doing when I go off vanilla.

Long weekend is here...my hopefulness is to have a moderate weekend, one I can be happy with...and one that doesn't lead to a binge..my body can't take much more of them

Hope to have a good report!

REgarding the Bowflex machine, which bars do you mean? The two upper ones? I think they are for working your arms, kind of like a cross country ski machine.

So Monday was a strange day because of my over the top weekend, I wasn't hungry for breakfast until like 10, then I was reading and had to make dinner to take over to my daughters...so I ate there at like 5:30, and came home and thought wow two meals today...at first I was thinking oh I can squeeze in another and decided not to..

Today so far my tummy is on schedule..I love getting hungry..who would ever thought I would say that..but food does taste a heck of a lot better when you are...

We'll dinner is done!

Oolala, ya those funny looking bars..are you thinking of getting one? I have an elliptical and will be in the market for something new when it hits the dust.

I'm not in the market for ANY equipment. I've got weights, a rebounder, and tons of workout videos. And I still don't work out regularly! I'm not "allowed" to even think of it.

Thanks Oolala, Middleager, Herbsgirl for stopping by!

I know Middleager, I rather eat when I'm hungry, weekends are start off that way, but my old habits kick in, so I'm hoping for brighter weekends!

Oolala, you are too funny...come on girl dust off your things...I would love a new piece of equipment, but right not doesn't look too promising!

This week so far so good!

Went to our first team luncheon with the new company...had an awesome salad..very filling, for dinner had a burrito de-lite and chips for dinner...so rewarding to listen to what I'm desiring to eat and then eat it..of course I still have to plan dinners ahead, but try to go with what I'm in the mood for.

Hope everyone is having a good week!

Checking in, so far all is well..

My Saturday was a tad over the top but Sunday was a day to be proud of.

I actually started taking Garcina Cambogia on Jan 1 and I can't believe how my appetite is like nil and MY carb cravings are gone...

I know people will frown at this stuff, but I needed to try something to help curb my cravings for carbs...actually pretty amazing stuff....not sure I'm happy with not having an appetite but for now while building my habit works for me.

My husband actually convinced me to give it a try and he planned on trying it. The stuff works so good I even sent my best friend Louanne a bottle.

Boy yesterday was hard for me, the urge to binge or should I say continue to eat after my meals was there...I also would think of a snack, oh just one piece of cheese won't hurt and of course other foods starting dancing in my head.

I made it to bed without binging..I did separate those thoughts as junk and thought there truly is no need for me to eat, it is just again junk thoughts (habits) that I didn't have to act on. I kind of draw an invisible lie between the addictive voice/junk and the higher part of me that really doesn't want to and then let things be. It is so worth waking up binge free, If I could bottle that feeling when the urges come I might not have so many.

Hoping for not too many of those days...

NoSnacker, what a nice victory! That waking up feeling that you describe is its own reward. Wake up feeling glad that you didn't overeat the night before will reinforce itself. You can "bottle that feeling" in your memory banks to draw upon the next time you're tempted to overdo it.

Congrats on taking care of yourself on a difficult night!

Automatedeating and Eschano..thanks...

Sometimes those feelings are like life or death...when I quit smoking it was a very very hard thing to do, especially after relapses and I felt I would just wilt away and die without smoking it was such a part of my life.

Sometimes when I come home from work I love to grab chips or something very crunchy and munch away....so it is hard to not get excited thinking about my crunching foods...arghhhhh..

Getting ready to make dinner so hopefully after that I will not have the battle..

I'll try to focus on how great I felt this morning! Maybe I'll buy myself some flowers this weekend!

So the weekend is here! My plans are to stick to my 3 squares, include a treat right after my lunch/dinner.

I have to be sure to eat breakfast as I get caught up in running from here to there and it ends up being 10ish or later before I eat...my weekends are finally taming down, well at least of the days.

I bought myself some lemon bite size wafer cookies - no hydrogenated fats....happen to turn down an isle and said mmm what are those...Loacker...yup I love lemon and think these will be a very special.

Not sure if I mentioned anywhere, but since I have come back to No S on 12/4 I've lost 10-lbs. I do have about 25 more to go but feel that having No S on my side in 1 year I hope to say, "I'm where I would like to be". So far one of the most noticed health benefits is "NO heartburn during the middle of the night", my feet haven't bothered me as much...and I'm back in my size 16 pants.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

excellent news about the heartburn going away! That is the kind of self-rewarding benefit of NoS that helps keep us at the habit even when the scale is immediately doing what we'd like it to. :)

Hi there.....thanks everyone....I'm still struggling on the weekend, but I have to keep in mind that I will change it only when I'm ready I guess.

Putting it behind me and not beating myself is key to success.

Hope everyone has a great week!!!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

congrats on the weight loss . if you stick with this you may see some fluctuations but in general it is much easier to maintain with this then with anything else i have tried to do!

Urges

Post by NoSnacker » Wed Feb 12, 2014 10:12 am

Most nights after I eat dinner, I want to keep going, thinking of things to eat (binge) on... Last night was no exception...what I have been doing is looking at the urge and realizing, nope this is all junk (survival instincts from past dieting) thoughts trying to get me to eat something, old habits wanting to derail me...and then I think of what my true self wants, gently reminding myself that I really don't want to binge and that separating these thoughts and seeing them for what they really are, I'm able to gently disregard them..and next thing I know I did not binge..and I wake up saying this is how I truly want to feel..binge free...so much better than binging for 15-20 minutes only to feel like crap...now I have to apply this to my weekends.

For me the thought of how good I'll feel when I wake up and beat that urge the night before gets me through. That and distraction (my favourite one is taking a bath).

Went to my sons last night with pizza and wings in hand for the family. On my way I planned on what I would have and it was so nice to have 3 wings and 2 squares of pizza guilt free...

Life is so much easier when eating guilt free.

I was taking garcina cambogia but it surely didn't agree with me, made me feel full all the time and I want to feel hunger before I eat, true hunger..so much for trying something new..

Happy Valentines Day everyone!

Deb, Good idea on tracking the weekend. As long as its still an S day and you don't feel pressure to perform. That said, I know I feel better physically and emotionally if I eat 3 meals plus whatever and the whatever is reasonable.

Thank you so much Automateating!

Always blows me away how I could have such sane days of eating during the week to totally be a different person on the weekend...but this time I'm not letting it beat me down :)

Today went to lunch with friends and did really great...like second nature...I love getting back to the basics.

Yesterday was a good day,

This morning I wanted to get on the scale and didn't..this is big for me as I let the scale derail me after a not so good weekend.

I applied my fighting the urge principle..thought of weighing and started to feel I needed to..then I reminded myself that this comes from times past where I would weigh and then beat myself, and then start eating out of discouragement..and quickly thought my true self did not want to weigh at this time..no arguing with myself, just put the old self to bed..night night..

I know sounds strange, but if we can separate our true self from our past self of diet thinking, self hatred, belittlement, etc. we can succeed.

Off to get ready for work..have a good one.

Night Night!! Like that! Good for you! WHOO HOO!!! A victory over your old self! I USED to do the same exact thing you are describing with the scale. BLECK!! Still trying to decide how often I want to weigh. How often do you weigh?

Have a blessed day!

Rough few days

Post by NoSnacker » Thu Feb 27, 2014 11:58 am

What a rough few days...say it isn't soooooo....reds for 6 days in the row, not because I had a snack, etc. but because I have been binging...like all that I learned I totally ignored about my thoughts....and how to manage them and not give in to a binge..

So starting today, I'm going to try to get my mojo back!

Yik!!

Gah I binged last night myself. This too will pass. You have done some good self talk you can do it again! I woke up with such remorse, and that feeling this will never get better and I will be overweight the rest of my life..... Then decided I would feel better of I was productive and got lots of things done. And I needed to get out of my head and be useful. I decided to call a mom of a kid my husband coaches becuase her daughter tore her ACL and see if they need anything. Who else can I help today? I can work on a project for the school. I know it would be nice to have every scrap of laundry put away.
I don't know about you but I spend way too much time thinking about food, my diet, weight loss and gain. There is so much more to focus on!

Still struggling....I think due to a lot of stress, no excuse but with my new project at work and being changed to a new company all in one, has caused great anxiety.

But I'm don't want to give up...

I hear you about the stress. Perhaps you can find a. Ice way to pamper yourself and reduce stress. I have not had a perfect day for over a week but I am forgiving myself for little things and telling myself if I turn it around NOW it will count as a success. Sometimes that works, and sometimes it doesn't. Then I see some friends being successful at weight watchers, and calorie counting and I think. I should be doing that! Then I remind myself I can't even stick to three meals how am Ingoing to stick to a diet? So I will work on just sticking to three meals.
I hope my previouse post did not sound smug. I am struggling too. I look forward to seeing some green days in your future. It is March after all!

I noticed that your BMI is lower than when you started. Granted, not as low as you'd probably like but give credit where it's due. It's lower and that's against to odds in your age group!
