peachee's check in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Everything is better now...sometimes fights are good things I guess, I just hate it when they interrupt me when I'm about to eat my dinner.

You have a great weekend as well!

LOL...

PS.. Could you mention which kickass Yoga video you liked?
I tried several and they all bored the heck out of me!
Even the Ashtanga video by David Swenson...
As amazing as he is, he is so dull to listen to!!! LOL...
But he is an amazing Yogi!!!
Pretzle man for sure!

Have a great week!

thanks deb!

today was not so hot. i went into work, the boy i work with was out sick and i had been feeling pretty sick (fell asleep real early last night, sore throat, drained today) so i left early. i left the lunch i packed at work and then i couldn't figure out what i wanted so i had oatmeal which wasn't really what i wanted i guess, since i ended up having a snack not too long after. back to day 1 tomorrow.

B- 1/2 c whole milk yogurt
sm bowl blueberries
1/3 c raw oats with soymilk, 1 T raisins, 1 walnut, 1 dried apricot
1/4 papaya
1 greentea, plain

(the little bowls for the oats and berries fit on my plate with the papaya and weren't super full, so i think it's ok)

L- 1/2 c oats w/ raisins, walnuts, 1 dried apricots, 3 T yogurt
hot cocoa - 1 c unsweetened soymilk, 2 T dark cocoa powder, stevia

Snack - goat cheese, crackers and lox and even a small handful of popcorn

i'll have my normal dinner tonite and get back on track tomorrow.

Ex: 45 minutes walking on treadmill

deb- hope everyone there is feeling better. i can't breathe at all! it's really annoying. i decided not to use my sick days as s days because i'm really trying to form my habit - i just started this and i want to make some progress. i haven't been able to do my usual exercise routine (which i started just a week and 1/2 ago or so) the past 2 days...and i've been sick all week.

a little info on me...i don't have too much weight to lose but i did have an eating disorder and then after 10 years of that (i'm 23 as of may 10, so it's been most of my life that i remember) i decided, with some pushing from my bf, to stop dieting/exercising compulsively and do the whole "anti diet thing" by eating whenever i was hungry and whatever i wanted. (i didn't jump from e.d to antidiet - there were steps in between but too long to go into) easier said than done but i did that for about a year and gained a bit of weight but i guess look "average" with a little more in places than i would like. now i want to have a healthy relationship with food and my body, lose a little weight so i feel good about myself but mostly just have balance and a sane structure for a sense of "security". it has been TERRIFYING trying to let go of the eating disorder and gaining weight esp for someone who doesn't really know how to eat by hunger. no s makes it way easier to distinguish when i'm hungry and full and to eat what i REALLY want (i don't feel guilty about eating something heavier if i want it because i haven't been eating all day long and i dont' eat cookies for dinner). Sometimes i am tempted to add extra restrictions but i reread the website (i printed it out just for those moments) and it really seems to help calm me down....i promise myself i'll do it as is for a year and see how it goes.
Whew that was long!

Today Day 3: No S: SUCCESS

B - 1 c low sugar hemp granola w/ 1 c unsweetened soymilk and few almond slivers/raisins
1 c coffee

L- beef tenderloin w/ horseradish sauce, mashed potatoes, broccoli

D - 1 piece bread w/ olive oil
1/4 of HUGE portion at restuarant - chipolte chicken salad w/ wonton noodles
2 weak cosmos (I even gave them the recipe for the 2nd one and it was still awful)

Exercise: I got a sledgehammer today..only a 6 pounder cuz i have to work my way up and did 14 min. of shovelgloving. very cool. i already feel buffer.

today was snackier than i would have liked because i was supposed to go home to ct but then didn't so my lunch was a little too small, dinner was an early "snack" and my S's weren't planned out ( I thought i'd be having cake in ct). ah well. i want to keep my other S days like no S days except for dessert after dinner. this is sort of how i used to eat and it made me realize how much more i enjoy food and how much better i feel on No S.

Day 11: S Day: SUCCESS

B: 1/2 croissant w/ raspberry jam
coffee w/ soymilk

L: grilled chicken and baby spinach salad w/ red wine vinagrette
1 slice french bread
1 apple

D: baked halibut au gratin w/ few greenbeans

glass of wine

treats: iced coffee w/ cream and sugar
small bowl of icecream w/ cookie

i felt pretty satisfied after dinner...probably could have eaten less, but was about a plate and didn't eat all that i was served. i wasn't going to have dessert but then i decided to because otherwise i might be tempted to have it on a no s day. it's weird. ..i wanted a dessert all week, but when i could have it...i didn't want it so much (except cheesecake but there was none at the restuarant and the stores were closed). i waited until we got home and had some...i almost wish i hadn't because it wasn't exactly what i wanted. oh well. next time i'll plan it better. all in all, not a bad day.

Day 12: S Day: SUCCESS

my S day today reminded me of how I used to eat, and involved absolutely NO fruit or vegetables (unless veggies pizza counts). ICK! i feel sooooooooooooooooo much better since No S. can't wait to get back to No S tomorrow! and for next weekend, i am going to eat the same as i normally do, but have dessert at the restuarant on the night we go out, and maybe a fruit dessert with dark chocolate at home the other night. that way, i wont' feel like i've completely returned to pre-no s days. (think poptarts, pizza, lots of sweet "snacks")

You have a nice variety of foods in your life Peechee...
Sounds good!

It's funny how an overindulgent S day leaves us wanting the sanity and moderation of N days..
This is really an "Anti Diet"....

Thanks Deb! I hope you had a great long weekend also!

Day 13: S:SUCCESS

B: 1/2 c hemp granola w/ 1/3 c whole milk
2/3 c blueberries w/ 2 T whole yogurt
coffee w/ half n half

L: 1 crab cake w. tartar sauce
greens w/ olive oil, dried cranberries, almonds
1 slice french bread w/ tapenade

D: 2 ribs
salad, roasted asparagus, squash
cosmo

treats: 3 strawberries in cream "dip", 2 squares dark chocolate, sm. serving frozen banana "icecream"

exercise: combo kickboxing dvd

i wasn't going to have an S day today because i didn' t think we were doing anything special and then we went to the bf's parent's house, so i did have an S. i sort of want to start over on my 21 day count because i felt off track this weekend with how i want myself to be eating in my ideal world in my head. i guess i'll count it for now as a success, tho all of the toppings bother me - cream in coffee, tartar sauce, olive oil, tapenade, almonds etc etc. they weren't in large portions but still......maybe not so "normal".

Hi Peechee :)
You can't totally cut out the things you enjoy, but just don't have a half cup of them... Like tartar sauce... Okay.. It's fattening, but you just see that you don't eat that way all the time and when you do, enjoy it in moderation..
If you're worried about cream in your coffee, have less coffee or just make it milk.. But this is supposed to be livable...
I have always felt like there are little special things which "make or break" a meal... Could I have chili without hotsauce and a little sour cream, yes, but it would be very unsatisfying and I'd almost rather skip the whole thing...
Rather than doing that, I just try to have these things less often, and enjoy them when I do...

Good luck!
Peace and Love,

L: chicken sandwich

1 bruschetta

Ex: cardio kickboxing dvd

don't think i'm losing any weight but i don't have a scale so i guess i can't be sure.....i do feel like my portions are getting better and this is getting MUCH easier. i'm realizing that i am satisfied w/ less food and actually kind of enjoy being hungry (just not ravenous unless i'm about to eat). and i'm off the frozen dinners/sweets for meals so my cooking is getting much better. i used to grab a cookie or 3, instead of a real meal, when i was hungry because i didn't have to prepare anything but now i like to cook and plan my meals. so overall, everything is good.

I swear Peechee, I drool looking at your menus!

What's cauliflower mash potatoes? pLease let me know how to make this!

Sounds yummy!!!!

I also have had a very nice but not over indulgent S day, and I wholeheartedly agree, it feels much nicer than a crazy one!

S's for me today were nestle tollhouse cookies, and I only had three (well maybe four if you count the really small one I ate when they came out the oven! LOL..)
I put the other half of the package away in the freezer..

Peace and Love,

Deb! that's great! i loooove cookies fresh from the oven but i tend to "nibble" too much on them if i bake a big batch at home because i also love cookie dough :) not sure i could have had a sane s day w/ cookies. what i did today was i bought a few different kinds of pie - they sell these frozen slices that come in packages of 2...and i got some friendly's sundaes to go so that i would have single servings of the s day treats i like. i won't feel tempted during the week to eat them becaause they are in single packages...for some reason if i ahve the whole pie or whole icecream container i am more tempted to have "just a bite" which turns into a lot more than that.

anyway, cauliflower mashed potatoes:

1 head cauliflower
2 T butter
1/4 c half and half
1/4 tsp sea salt
black pepper to taste

1) steam cauliflower until tender
2) in blender or food processor, blend all ingredients, including cauliflower, until smooth
4) serve

this recipe says it serves about 4. i think i have also made it without the half and half - with milk to replace it and it was still good.

D: 1 mozzerella stick

thanks for the encouragement, deb! sadly, today was another bad day....i've been having a sweets craving and part of it is being super tired from work and school and relationship stuff and part of it is stress because work and school and relationship stuff are really sucking right now. and part of it is hormones and being lonely and part of it is that i know my s and no s days got messed up from the party tomorrow and from me messing up and i really hate it when my no s and s days aren't on the normal schedule. and also i completed the 21 days so i feel like it's "starting over". anyway, at some point soon i will be back on track and i'm excited to do that because i was starting to see results. at times i wonder if i subconsciously sabotage myself when thigns start to work......

If you don't mind me playing psychoanalyst for a few moments, here's my guess...

I don't think you really have a fear of succeeding, but I do feel you are being wayyyyyy to hard on yourself and this may cause you to then, continue the vicious cycle of eating out of stress.. Perhaps too, you are somewhere, subconsciously "punishing" yourself when you fail, and continuing the vicious cycle behavior, rather than accepting, loving and forgiving yourself and continuing a positive outlook..
Everyone gets excited about "new beginnings" and usually start out with lots of determined excitement... Think of people who make New Years resolutions, but then the excitement wears off and the real work presents itself, in all its unexciting, mundane, and difficult splendor (NB no I did not write splenda! LOL..)

The way to get past that difficult patch is not to continue to put restrictions and continue to beat yourself up, but rather to accept fully, where you are now, and embrace it... You have to be your best friend and just pat yourself on the back for your efforts...

You don't know how many times it took for me to actually be able to do the 21 days.... It took me a whole year of attempts, and failures, to finally do it... I admire you for your 21 days Peechee!!! Don't focus on the failures...
Just get on with it!!!
You can do it!!!!

ps.. Sorry about school and relationship suckyness, and the dreaded, hormones... I'm sure you are on to something there....

Every moment is a new beginning... Stay positive and hug yourself for even just trying!!!!

I just got back from day, and had a wonderful yoga class... I know you do yoga and loads of other workout stuff at home.. I personally find such overwhelming support and love from my teacher, and that really makes a difference for me... Maybe you might enjoy a group class as well!
It's so helpful in learning to accept yourself the way you are, and in building a positive self image and healthy mind and body!

Just a suggestion...

Peace and Love,
8) Deb

ps.. Yesteday I caved into some chocolate ice cream... It was those darn pms hormones!!! LOL... It happens... But today I did very well..
Take each day one at a time!

Deb, thank you again for your reply. you are SO supportive and insightful. I definately try to punish myself when I fail esp. with diets as I used to be anorexic/bulimic and either purge when I ate anything or not eat for a week...I don't go to those extremes anymore but some of the thoughts are still lingering. I am trying to accept the moment...and this weekend, while I did have sweets, I did better in other parts of my life (relationship, school) accepting and responding in a more positive way. (and when I found out my car would cost 884 $ to fix, I didn't freak out too much). It really works and turns the whole thing around when you take that moment to stop and look at your thoughts before reacting (or eating). I also looked into the rates at a gym we used to go to because they have some cool group classes and I'd like to get out and be around people sometimes, maybe make some friends. (I moved up here about a year and a 1/2 ago and still need to make some friends) They also have a yoga class. Anyway, thanks for your kind words, I am off to work. Have a great day!

Day 1: No S: SUCCESS

B: 1/2 c hemp granola w/ sprinkle of cranberries, raisins and almond slivers
1/2 c berries w/ 2 T yogurt
1/2 c w milk
coffee

L: 1 tuna sandwich
part of an orange (dropped part on floor)
few flavored pretzel bites (still hungry after lost orange parts)

D: leftover honey chicken salad from 99 (not the healthiest salad)
small triangle of pita bread
cosmo

Ex: Ultimate Kickbox Boot Camp DVD

I had been trying to make cosmos S's and just have wine but I've reconsidered that for now as I don't think they have too much sugar - just cranberry juice and triple sec (not sure what is in triple sec?) but it can't be too many more calories than wine. I am going to see how many days in a row I can do, now that the first 21 is done.

Day 7: S Day: SUCCESS

B: coffee w/ milk
1 bran muffin
papaya w/ 2 T yogurt

L: ravioli w/ cream sauce
crackers w/ cheese
turkey jerky
4 dried papaya spears

D: 1 burger
little pasta salad and ceasar salad
margarita
4 papaya spears
watermelon slice

Ex: 1/2 hour on elliptical and weights for upper body (joined gym today)

I was SO hungry at lunch and ate a very large meal. I wasn't hungry when I got back from the gym but then I guess it caught up with me. Dinner was at the bf's parent's house and somehow I always end up eating more than I would like when I go there. They are tiny people and ALWAYS clean their plates (FULL plates and sometimes go on to snack or eat dessert afterwards or at least still seem hungry) I couldn't even finish everything on my plate and still felt like a ate a little too much. How do they do it? It blows my mind.......Anyway. No real sweets today! I have all this pie in my freezer and didn't even want to touch it :) That must be something like progress esp since I usually feel like I should eat pie or something really sweet on S days just because I can....

Day 8: NO S: SUCCESS

B:1 bran muffin
papaya w/ 2 T yogurt
coffee w/ 1/4 c milk

L: ham and cheese sandwich
apple
2 celery stalks w/ 1 tsp PB and raisins

D: 1 slice california pizza
spinach
5 dried papays spears
cosmo

Ex: not today. was very tired when i woke up and got home at 10 after work and class. gym tomorrow. i think the dried papaya has some sugar and maybe should be an S and probably the cosmos too, cuz now that i think abotu it i seemed to feel smaller during my 21 days when i was just having wine. but i'll wait til this class ends next week before i make that change. (sadly, right now it's one thing i really look forward to at the end of the day to relax - other than the gym.)

Day 9: NO S: SUCCESS

B: coffee w/ milk
bagel - 1/2 w/ creamcheese
1 egg, 1 slice of cheese
1/2 banana w/ 1 T yogurt

L: ham and cheese sandwich
apple
celery stalks w/ 1 tsp PB and raisins

D: porkchop
3 bean salad
watermelon
wine and small cosmo (should have just had a big cosmo)

EX: 35 min elliptical

Day 10: NO S: SUCCESS

B: 1/2 c granola w/ 1/2 c milk
papaya
coffee

L: ham and cheese sandwich
apple
celery w/ 1 tsp peanut butter
flavored pretzels

D: porkchop
large helping of 3 bean salad
watermelon

Ok, the pretzels at lunch probably would have had to have been stacked to fit on the plate. But I really wanted some and I wanted to feel all the way satisfied instead of like I still wanted more. (I've been very hungry this week). At dinner I had a generous serving of bean salad...it fit on the plate but I made up for the pretzels and extra beans by skipping the drink tonight. It was easy because I wasn't hungry. Hopefully next week when my class ends, my schedule w/ exercise and no more dinners at school will work out better and life will be more relaxed. I can't wait!

Day 11: NO S: SUCCESS

B: 1/2 c granola
1/2 c milk
papaya w/ 1 T yogurt

L: ham and cheese sandwich
apple
celery w/ 1 tsp PB and raisins

D: out to eat: fish - 1 fried fish "chip" and lox
caesar salad
some of bf's french fries
bread
cosmo

Ex: 35 min. elliptical
weights

Dinner was a bit less structured than I had planned since the servings were HUGE and we ended up sharing everything- I'm pretty sure it would have all fit on one plate....maybe a little crowded. (tho I double checked with Jim and he said it was platable). Next time I'll have to remember to skip the bread.....I always forget how huge restuarant portions are (and they always come with somethign starchy on the side).

just wanted to pop in and say i'm still on track...today will be day 18. i've been going to the gym almost every day, and last night i had finals for my summer course. thank god its over. i'm on vacation after i do some home services today..until the 5th! i haven't noticed too much weight loss but i have no scale, though my legs seems more toned from the exercise. the bf thinks my body is still readjusting because i used to eat a very limited diet (6 meals a day, measured and weighed, very few carbs, no bread, no sweets, no alchohol, no juice, no non-lean meat, no sauces, no cheese, no yogurt, no cereal...really only lean meat, eggh whites veggies, flax oil and sometimes oats and berries or tiny bit of sweetpotato.) and i went to the gym every day. i stopped that diet/exercise thing about a year ago and just ate everything all the time and did no exercise. (i went through a cookie dough phase, muffin phase, buffallo chicken phase, icecream phase and so on where i was eating those things for almost every meal for a week straight. i had to break the obsession somehow :D ) though i gained some weight, it wasn't as bad as one might think. but anyway, that was the long way of saying, hopefully the bf is right and the extra weight will come off as my body gets used to eating like a "normal" human being who is being fed "normal" foods and is doing a "normal" amount of exercise.
