automated eating tracker

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Oolala, I am going to get busy teaching my 10-year old better manners! I do NOT want him to eat like that when he is an adult! Well, I guess I don't want him eating like that now, either.

So much for my amazing biking. Tuesday and Wednesday ended up big fat zeros worth of exercise. Argh. My schedule just doesn't seem to want to give me a consistent daily opening that will help me build a habit.

Tuesday and Wednesday, April 12 and 13:

NoSEating: Greenie all the way: toast one day, cheerios the other; breakfasts, soup and fruit/veggies both lunches; pizza one night and chicken fettuccine last night.

NoSpending: Good to go. I did have to pay for my son's Taekwondo testing, but that's a fair exception on my "rule sheet".

NoSloth: Sloth! Sloth! Sloth!

RaisingReaders: Hey! I've been doing good! We're reading Sasquatch Escape.

Wb!l

I thought I'd miss reading to my kids and I did at first but mostly I'm so grateful for the shortened bedtime routine. Still I'm glad I did it. Almost every night till my youngest was 10. Those are not the kind of moments one could possibly regret so good job!

Hope the rest of your week goes well!

Linda :)

Hi, automated! I'm also struggling with establishing firm exercise routine. What about 14 minutes of anything as a base, and adding whatever you can in a given day on top of that?

Great idea, Imogen. I really should get back to Basics and the No S Way of exercising (I could use tabata instead of shovelglove).

Linda, you have been such an inspiration for reading out-loud to my kids!! Thanks for the encouragement so that I can keep with it.

Sorry about the anxiety auto. I think you've told me you've had success with therapy in the past. Maybe that could be an option again? I'm finding it so helpful but can't hurt to read about it in the meantime. Whenever I'm grappling with something, my first instinct is to grab a book about it. If nothing else it feels good to know you're not alone.

Yes, I have really gotten a lot out of therapy in the past. I have no idea how I could fit that into my schedule these days, although it's probably exactly what I need. --what's more important--getting my hair done once every 7 weeks or going to a counselor? Hehehe I'm almost not joking.

NoSEating: Barely green. temptations a plenty, but somehow here I am and it's bedtime and I'm green.
NoSpending: Another close one. I forgot my wallet on a kid errand or I would have caved on dinner take-out for sure. But green.
NoSloth: Fail.
RaisingReaders: Easy green for some reason

Get a load of tomorrow's schedule:
2 flag football games
2 basketball games
2 birthday parties (which I have no gifts for....any quick ideas that will save me a trip to the store)?

I hear ya on the hair. I actually joke that going to my hair stylist is like therapy. She is always gushing with compliments and so interested in my life. Also she's very talented and leaving there with my hair all beautiful is a huge boost to my confidence.

Crazy schedule for you tomorrow! I'm so happy soccer is over. Now it's just piano. No games for that!

You could print out an Amazon gift card and have your boys make a cute card. Amazon has something for everyone!

Gl!

I second Linda's suggestion. My 8-year-old nephew would agree - he prefers getting gift cards than actual gifts, mostly because he tends to change his mind so quickly - when his mom gives me an idea for a gift on Sunday, on Monday he dreams about something else. As for the hair stylist vs therapist "dilemma"... I'd always go for getting my hair done. No kidding, I have had both, and great hair boosts confidence way faster than therapy could ever do

I started with 4 minute tabatas last fall. I'm up to 14 minutes of something darn vigorous most N days, sometimes 10 minutes.

Thanks for the gift ideas, and for the tabata pep talk! ;)

We found an old canister, decorated it like a piggy bank, and put $9 bucks in quarters in there (she was turning 9). Then we taped 9 chuck e cheese tokens to a card the kids made. Perfect. I was proud of myself and saved a shopping trip.

NoSpending: GREEN
NoSloth: Green, green! ;) Walked 40 minutes
RaisingReaders: Green-0; reading Dragon Masters Series

I bought a bike rack, and my newest plan (did I tell you how my 10-year old biffed it and hit his head while we were riding the other day?): I put my bike on the bike rack, take the kids to school and park there. Ride the 1 mile from there to my work (and back). On other days, I can just walk there and back. It fits a) timewise--not so rushed, only takes a few minutes; and b) no so hilly as my other route. That monster hill so defeated me. I am no Rocky.

FYI my weekend S days were nice. Good stuff with family and friends.

I've thought of parking a ways from work, but I often have a roll-around that I have trashed the wheels on once before. The case I had before I had to chuck because they couldn't replace them. Such a waste! But a pretty good excuse... yet, I envy you. Hmm.

NoSEating: Fail--ate more than one plate at dinner
NoSpending: Green. But there was one moment that I had to really resist buying a bottle of wine on the way home after chaperoning kids all around in the evening.

RaisingReaders: S Day on Wednesdays (we watch Survivor together!) ;)

I weighed myself a couple days ago. Big mistake. For some reason I had gained 3 pounds. Maybe I've had more red days than I've realized--both of the eating too much/and the slothing too much variety. Bummer.

Hey auto, a one off weight means nothing - it's more likely measuring how much water you've drunk or how salty yesterday's dinner was. I liked oolala's rule about never weighing without 3 green days first.

Today was a little better. Of course, I got to teach, and I generally love that.

It's funny. When I solely taught, if you asked me if I liked my job, I'd say I really loved it. Sure, some tough days, but I really loved it. Now, since I do much more admin, if you asked me that same question, I'd hesitate. I don't necessarily love my job anymore. However, I don't want to give it up. I enjoy the power of decision-making that I have to try to improve my workplace. Weird, isn't it? Worth pondering further.

I think it's great to just write it down and move forward. We all have those rough patches but eventually get back on course and the weight will get back on track too. Yep, that simple.

Enjoy your weekend because that's part of doing NoS too!

Enjoy your weekend! Can you take some time out just for you to destress?

Ouch, sounds like your workplace is full of chocolates! Any chance of getting people to not offer or put them somewhere else?

Oh no I'm so sorry!

First off be kind to yourself!

Things to try:
1--a big Starbucks drink (sometimes as long as I have something I'm ok and I drink it slooooow to make it last)
2--chew gum
3--brush your teeth
4--take a few deep breaths and try to figure how what you really need.

Hang in there. Just try to get to the next meal and promise yourself you'll have something yummy!

Hey auto, hope your day ended ok. Is work still a major stress? Is there any way you can ask (or pay) for some help at work or with home duties to get you past this period?

I've been a terrible work stress eater in the past (mainly free cookies from the barrel), but it never really helps and the crumby work situation is still there afterwards. Wow that's a bad pun.

Thanks ironchef and Linda for the support.

I survived this day.

YES YES, work is stressful. Crazy wild. Almost every day. And it's been a really different atmosphere in the past year than in previous years (suffice it to say---new management).

So, I ended up with a fail for eating. But not terrible. I basically did a climber's arrest. ;) I did use a couple of Linda's suggestions (chewing gum, deep breathing), and also drank a ton of water.

I ended up with a fail for NoSpending. But totally OK with that one. My 6 year old was having some cognitive testing (I volunteered him for a friend that is doing some grad work!) and he needed a snack after school, ASAP. I bought him string cheese. No guilt on that one.

NoSloth--success with some biking

RaisingReaders--success

Bad day, but done. Mark it and move on.

Thanks again for the support, and the crummy puns.

Automatedeating-

Do you find it helpful to weigh almost daily? I used to do that and it worked for me. But I feel as if I became obsessed with that number. I can't figure out if it's better to be a little obsessive and see faster results or ditch the scale and focus most on developing habit.
Maybe it doesn't affect your day like it used to affect mine!

Oh, and about the work stress- I find that the biggest trigger for my overeating. Great job not going overboard despite a slight failure. It is a silly thing we sometimes tell ourselves- "Might as well x, already failed." Sometimes I think quickly moving on from a failure is another form of success.

OK, almost done with another weekend.

I have had so many red days strung together that a weekend loses all its glory. Green, be my friend again.

SillyMonkey, I hardly ever weigh. ;) There was a time when I did, but it's been ages since I did that. In fact--your post has inspired me to start weighing more frequently. It hardly ever made me have a bad day, because I generally knew what to expect. The bad days are when I finally weigh myself and confirm that my pigging out has caused weight gain.

So, you might not have intended to help me in this "weigh", but I am going to "weigh" more often. ;)

OK, and now you will all officially know I am going off my rocker: I am going to do a juice fast (I think). I'm researching right now.

I understand the lure of the juice fast esp when I'm feeling out of control with my eating. I tried one a 3 day one a few months back and made it about a half a day. &#128522; Rawcookie did one recently though (I think or maybe just a cleanse) but she really enjoyed it! So no we won't think you're crazy. Sometimes we just need a little kickstart so that might do the trick.

Hope this week goes well. Keep trying, keep posting. It'll get better!

Oh boy you make me feel like a bad mom with your "summer work". Thank goodness for dh who is in constant teaching mode so they can't avoid learning at least a little bit.

So happy you're still checking in from time to time. Any fun summer plans?

Tuesday, June 14th
Weight: 145.4

Ah, guess I've been eating too much. I'm a little panicked. Can't remember the last time my eating has been this out of control. I'm eating all the time! Reds flying fast and furious. I'm like a bull-fighter, waving my red flag to and fro.

Ack! So much for my great plan of getting down to 135 for my August 3rd anniversary.

On other fronts:
NoSpending--just as red as NoSEating
NoSloth--reds and greens, not too bad actually. Lots of biking
RaisingReaders--mostly greens, at least one thing is going right.

We are leaving on a 2-week Roadtrip on Sunday! I have all the campgrounds booked and I've spent gazillions of dollars on Amazon in preparation. ;)

Hi automatedeating.

Isn't it great to have berries season! They satisfy my sweet tooth - after a bowl of strawberries, I feel as though I have really indulged :)

Good luck - you are doing fine. I think the important thing is to recognize and admit to yourself that you have gotten a bit out of control and cut back and then take control - that is what every thin person I have ever known always did - almost unconsciously. "too much for lunch - I'll have a light dinner" sort of thing.

Thank you librarylady for your cool-headed encouragement. Exactly what I needed.

We had a great vacation! We just got back last night. I haven't weighed yet....not really sure what to expect. I exercised a lot and felt like I ate normally, so I'm hoping to not have gained. I'll wait until tomorrow morning to weigh-in.

Sorry about the upward trend but you definitely caught it before it got too out of hand. I'm certain you will get back to a comfortable place with the three simple rules.

I thought I read you went on a 2 week road trip somewhere. If so I hope it was fun!

Hang in there. I'm finding coming back from such a long vacation a little overwhelming but I keep telling myself to be patient and things will get back to normal soon.

7-yr old is reading Dory Fantasmagory (for the zillionth time) and I am reading Warren the 13th out loud to him. The 10-year old is reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

I am pasting this SpiritSong recap from a General Discussion thread for motivation:

Here are some lessons we've learned so far from the generous contributors to this thread so far:

1. Don't ditch the No S Diet during an extinction burst. If you can fight your way through, your habit will be stronger than ever on the other side.

2. Don't play around with the rules. (I suggest reading "The Phases of No S" for guidance in this area. https://everydaysystems.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=6437) Trust that there is a process and someday you will be eating three healthy meals a day. Today may not be that day.

3. Use the "mark it and move on" philosophy for red days. (See "Phrases of No S" for proper credit for that phrase. https://everydaysystems.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=3883) Just because you hit a pothole with your car is no reason to drive it into a tree.

4. Figure out why you are doing No S and write it down for the days when you forget. And I don't mean "to lose weight." Write down why other diets don't work for you. Write down how great you feel at the end of the day when you had three plates of food and don't feel stuffed and gross. (Idea stolen from Judith Beck.)

5. The "I need to lose weight" diet and all its variations don't work! You can start No S any time because there is nothing special to buy, cook, or eat. Eat your regular food, just less of it.

6. No S isn't easy. Just turns out everything else is harder.

Thanks for reposting the list! I had forgotten the pothole/tree analogy, LOL!

I am feeling really good! I experienced massive anxiety this summer after we got a puppy. I don't mean to over-state this (I know it's just a dog) but I felt like I'd had a 3rd child that I had absolutely no bond with. 24/7 care, but no bond. It was like post-partum depression or something. I ended up having to get Xanax! I've never needed anything like that before, but I had a real crisis over this new responsibility in my already-over-packed life. I'm adjusting slowly. I only needed 9 pills altogether (I'd take a half to just take the edge off my insanity) and now I am really feeling much better.

Oh dear a new puppy?! It is like having a newborn. It's so much work and I can see how it'd cause you to reach your tipping point. That happens to me when I have a lot going on. I seem to be fine then just one more thing gets added to the mix and I'm done for. It just gets too overwhelming with that one last thing. We can only keep so many balls in the air, right?

I get the bonding thing too. We got a new dog about six months ago (a six yr old) and I had a lot of anxiety about it. My other dogs seemed really stressed out by him and he was this whole other responsibility I had to deal with. The worse part was that I just wasn't feeling affection for him like I did for my other dogs. But now I adore him and feel so close to him. My other dogs have adjusted to him and it's all good.

It sounds like things are better but with puppies can take some time for them to calm down and be lower maintenance. Hang in there!

Happy to see you posting again. Would love to hear how everything else is going with work and your boys when you have a chance.

Best of luck,
Linda

Linda, thanks for the empathy about the dog! He really is a nice dog, I'm sure I will continue to calm down gradually.
It was particularly hard to deal with the cats and the dog together; my cats are 7 years old and definitely have not been happy. One basically went feral for a few weeks. But everyone seems to be adjusting better now (it's been 10 weeks).

kaali, I LOVED our old dog. He died 9 years ago. I thought I was ready, but I just wasn't anticipating my visceral reaction to the "management" of a dog in a neighborhood packed with kids and other dogs. My previous dog bit some people and got in a couple of dog fights. I think I have post-traumatic stress or something similar.

Just having one of those awful mood days. I had a meeting at work where I got into a public conflict. I am hating myself. I keep replaying the convo in my head and thinking of all the defusing comments I should have made and would have if I were a perfect person. I hate not being perfect.

Ugh *hugs*

It sucks being human sometimes. I have a temper and I always feel so guilty after I snap at someone. It's not a good combo. I wish I could be someone that just blows stuff like that off but I guess it means we care at least so that's good.

Could you apologize or just too awkward? Anyway best to forgive yourself for for your humanness and move on right?

Enjoy your weekend!

Thanks for the kind words, Linda. I think things are resolved OK with that situation....

I really need to work on:
*being grateful for such a wonderful job, husband, kiddos, pets, house, extended family, food, health, and so many other blessings.
*going out of my way to help others and lessening my own narcissistic tendencies.
*being in the moment, not letting my mind wander so much. finding full engagement
*being optimistic

wow, sounds like a need an entire personality overhaul. ;)

Weekend S Days -- 9/17 and 9/18

138.5 (Sat) and 137.7 (Sun)

goals--walk one of the two days (most likely Sunday morning), eat whatever I feel like but still log here for the habit part.

It's embarrassing to realize just how much I crave attention, admiration, and praise. It bothers me to be passed over and see someone else get credit for something I think I'd be just as good at.

I'd like to be the kind of person that is humble and looks for ways to give others credit, and encouragement.

I wonder if I can make such big changes in my character at my age? Has anyone had success at that sort of thing?

Aside (that I just want to have in writing here to remind myself of): An honest and fair friend witnessed my conflict the other day. I asked her what her honest assessment of how I behaved. One of the comments she made was that she could tell that neither of us was really willing to understand with the other person's point was. Of course that infuriates me--of COURSE I listen to everybody else perfectly when I'm upset. LOL     :?
Ah, that's another thing to be grateful for: honest friends

I think you can definitely make big changes at any age. Therapy helps! I've been able to make huge changes with my ability to handle anger but it's happened slowly over time.

Thank you, Linda. I'm going to the doc -- and I will be asking for a massage referral. Now I'm thinking I will also ask for a therapy/counselor referral!

I have some super-easy buttons to push. I hope that by recognizing them I can prepare and plan more mature responses.

One that I have been previously aware of is feeling unfairly blamed for something. I get ridiculously defensive.

Another trigger is similar, but is a very specific situation that arises at work: having someone play the "I didn't know that was happening" or "I wasn't included in that decision" when I know that they actually were. I need to NOT let that reaction get a rise out of me. But I'm not sure the best response--sometimes when I am trying to control my frustration I come across as condescending (I think I do this to my kids frequently!!!!).

Oooh massage! Glad you're looking into therapy as well. You were one of the reasons I finally got brave enough to go to therapy. I remember you saying how helpful you found it. That plus dh's encouragement did it and I'm so glad for it!

Sounds like you have a lot of insight and some great goals!

Hi Whosonfirst! Great username!

I just use a simple Garmin ($40, comes in a variety of cute colored bands). It is basically a watch (with a watch battery) that tells:
a) time
b) date
c) steps
d) miles completed

My husband has a fancy fitbit that he's always having to charge. I didn't want one, but he really wanted me to have one. We compromised by him getting me this cheaper Garmin that doesn't have to be charged (since it has a watch battery). I love the color, and having a watch. And it's easy to log my NoSloth steps rather than keep track of how long I walked.

What?! Did I miss another week?
I am SO CRAZY busy!!!! This is just wild. Where does my time go.

Monday -- S Day-- kids and husband threw me a surprise birthday party!!
Tuesday -- S Day for my birthday family night

Wed, Thur, Frid all green for food (albeit meals were heavy); reading (finished Warren the 13th and now have started Harry Potter!!!! Yayayayayayaya been waiting to start the series again with second kiddo.
Exercise also very green. Walking ~1 hour M-F, and Sunday. Take Saturday off but get decent movement because I clean house Saturday.

Was terrified to weigh this week but Friday I did-- 139. Believe me, with the excessive S Days and heavy meals on N Days, I am relieved.

Glad to see you're still around. Looks like you're doing great with your habit and the scale is being responsive--yay!

Enjoy Harry Potter! My oldest is obsessed with Harry Potter but that's not a bad thing.

I love Harry Potter! I loved them when I read them myself in my 20's. I loved them even more when I read them to my oldest son (he's 10 now). And I am loving reading them a third time! What a marvelous tale.

Yeah I kinda thought it wasn't your first go around and now I do think I remember you talking about reading them with your oldest.

Can you believe I've never read them? I feel guilty about it since I know it'd mean a lot to my daughter. Oh well!

136.8!
I haven't seen a number that low in at least a year. I'd like to look back and see. Update--looks like at least 18 months since I've been this weight. And I was suprised to see just how low I had gotten with NoS -- about 131. Wow. Then I got sick with C.dif and I can truly see how that had a huge long-term impact on my life (in retrospect). Wow.

Trick seems to be the hour of daily walking in combo with relatively good compliance to NoS.

You're doing great! I'm also a fan of walking... strictness, however, is a totally different thing! But it sure does help a lot.

Saturday S Day! ;)

My 7 year old and I went out to breakfast at IHOP (my older son spent the night with a friend). We had so much fun! On the way home he talked the entire time about the Silver Chair, one of the Narnia books he's been listening to on tape. He sometimes has a hard time getting his ideas out clearly, and so it can take a while. If his older brother is there, I can pretty much guarantee the little one will get interrupted. So it was very sweet to have some one-on-one time with him.

Best part of sleepovers is getting one on one time with my other child! Glad you made the most of your time. :)

An idea for me:

One entry for the week. I'll post green/red; and any notable incidents that I want to remember.

May 29 - June 2:
Monday: S Day (national holiday) -- guess I started back with two S days in a row, lol
Tuesday: green
Wednesday:
Thursday:
Friday:

Weight:
Waist measurements:

Something I've realized: I think it's almost an unequivocal truth that my weight issues are DIRECTLY related to my busy lifestyle. Wow. How many other women is that the truth for? Like Oolala always says, healthy cultures have limited supplies of food (not our culture); and rules surrounding the eating of that food (not our culture anymore). Therefore, limiting my eating is something that requires my energy and willpower. Not something I have anything left of after my crazy days at work and with kids. I don't mean that to sound as an excuse, but it is clear that my own eating habits are not a priority with other demands on my energy and time that I place in front of my own body needs.

Hi auto, always nice to "see" you here. Hope you had a lovely long weekend.
automatedeating wrote:Something I've realized: I think it's almost an unequivocal truth that my weight issues are DIRECTLY related to my busy lifestyle.
This is me. Oh, so me. Something that helps me is to reframe my thoughts like this: No S eating will actually save me time. Only three eating events each day, no need to spend any time planning, shopping for, preparing, eating or cleaning up after any additional snacks or meals. Plus I don't have to earn the money to pay for additional foods. This line of thought might not be completely true, with crappy snacks available out of vending machines etc, but at least I can try to convince myself.

The other thing that happens in my mind is that I start on the "but I deserve it" track. As in "I've been so busy / tired / frazzled today, I deserve a treat" or "The kids are playing up, and there is no way to take a break, but at least I can have this yummy <insert snack here>". I guess what I need to convince myself is that I also "deserve" to nurture myself and give my body what it needs, which is moderate food and exercise.

I've been having Home Chef meals delivered for a few months now. Three meals a week. I enjoy it, and I'm a life-long "no wanna cook"-er. It has helped me determine that the following reasons have discouraged me from cooking:
1. worry about having the necessary ingredients.
2. distress over shopping for the ingredient list; is it enough, too much, the proper stuff, will I use up the extra....and on
3. will I have all the "tools" I need to make the meal?

I never appreciated my mother more than when I had to take over the cooking chores for my own family.
