RAWCOOKIE's NoS Journal

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Monday SUCCESS

Oh, today I was successful even having lunch with a couple of friends. There was a lovely bowl of lentil soup, and a big loaf of bread on the table between us. I had one slice of bread with some butter, and the soup. The others had a second slice of bread each. Then there was the offer of dessert - Alpro caramel dessert, bananas, ice-cream. I said 'no pudding for me thanks - it's not a pudding day!' and made myself a cup of Chai-spice tea. They each had a bowl of ice-cream.

So - they had an extra slice of bread and a bowl of ice-cream (kind of S day food, eh?!) and I was plenty satisfied with my soup and bread (and butter! that was my extra!) Just over a year ago, I'd totally have done the same - at least two slices of bread, and probably the Apro dessert, a banana AND the ice-cream for dessert. I am SO glad I met No S!

Isn't it great to be content with "enough" on an N day?!

Yeah, it really IS! I used to be the one sitting there with a never-full stomach who'd be wondering if there was anything else to eat and feeling like a glutton! It still amazes me how much my appetite has changed - I've said this before, but 'I wouldn't have thought it possible' to change so much!

That sounds absolutely perfect. Isn't it wonderful to know that you can sit and visit while not indulging...and isn't chai tea the PERFECT finish for lentil soup! well done.

Yes, the tea was nice - and those spices have a sweet kind of edge to them too - cloves and star anise etc.

Wednesday SUCCESS

I watched some food prep videos today after discovering The Happy Pear - a couple of Irish chaps, twins. I want their recipe book now - lovely recipes. I made my beans on toast extra special at lunch-time, thanks to the inspiration. It made them a million times more enjoyable.

I'm picking up a local veg box tomorrow, and a loaf of sourdough from a local bakery - so exciting!

When I started doing No S I really felt quite sad to miss out on some of the baking I used to do. Now I seem to have found renewed inspiration for making my meals more exciting - trying new recipes. This evening I processed some plums with a frozen banana and added some ginger to make a fruity dessert. That's my 'soft mod' - having something fruity after dinner!

Thursday SUCCESS!

Is a challenge today because I have to go out this evening - so eating my dinner earlier than usual. There will be coffee and cookies afterwards, around 9pm. And I will have to wait for a lift home - so there'll be no escaping! I'll have a cup of tea probably......... wrap both my hands round it, and TALK to people.

later: yes! I did it! the bowl of lentil soup with sourdough bread I had at 5.30pm kept me going - not tempted by the sweet treats at all. I did notice a couple who are doing the Blood Sugar Diet were tucking into the grapes rather hungrily - but, all respect to them, they've lost weight and didn't eat the cookies.

Good for you! Do you have a good lentil soup recipe? Was hoping to make some soon. Awesome success.

Sorry, Merry - no recipe!

Basic ingredients will usually be:
onion
garlic
lentils
stock/water
spices eg cumin, coriander, turmeric, ginger, garam masala, mint - whatever you like
sometimes tomato (paste, passata, chopped, dried - whatever)
salt & pepper
sometimes a dash of something acid is needed - lemon juice for example

I usually add in whatever bits of veg I have - yesterday it was kale, yellow pepper, green beans - but really, you can add whatever you have to hand - it's great for using up little left-over bits and pieces! You obviously leave chunky, or blend it smooth, or (I quite like) half-blend it.

Friday SUCCESS

Today started late, with breakfast not until 9am - so I didn't get hungry for lunch until gone 2pm, and dinner is going to be about 8.30pm. I reflected on how I used to have to eat every 3 hours! Now, I go a minimum of 5 hrs, and usually 6-7 hrs between meals. It's amazed me! I used to eat SO much more food in any one day!!!!!!

Just recently my S days have changed, in that I seem to be replacing Saturday lunch with something sweet/snacky, and maybe having a small snack after dinner (last night it was just about 25g peanuts). Also, my Saturday S day is the main one, and Sunday much lighter.

This morning (Sunday) I also woke up feeling slightly 'hungry'. I don't usually. I think this must be a reaction to eating sugar on Saturday - as I don't have sugar all week.

On S days, I enjoy having a bigger, cooked, breakfast. I also appreciate the opportunity to have a cake or biscuits, or sweets or ice-cream. But I don't seem to need those things anywhere as much as I used to.

My weight goes up over the weekend, then back down again on Monday/Tuesday - so it's a temporary thing. Because I've been weighing daily for a long time now, I am 8) about the scale changes (well, I do occasionally get down about it - but hardly ever now)

I'm getting quite excited about ending the month with just ONE red day, and no extra S days. (HabitCal gives me a Bronze medal for that, which seems a bit stingy, but, it's how the system works and it's fun!)

I know, the stats are a bit complicated - I've experimented putting in one yellow, or one red to see what difference it makes.

Wait, are you saying somewhere on Habitcal, it actually TELLS you if you got a medal?

I was going by what Reinhard says in the sticky on this board--and according to that, 1 Red day with no NWS days would be Silver:

"It works like this: every month, if you get through the entire month without a single slip up, post here and claim a virtual "gold medal." If you slipped up just once, silver; twice, bronze; more than that, well, better luck next month. You get up to 2 non-weekend special days "free," any more than that and they count as slip-ups for the medal tally."

Yes, on HabitCal, you can choose STATS and load it for the month - and it gives you a percentage and a medal (if you've got one!).

August was pretty good - only one RED day! This feels good :)

I find myself oddly without a plan for the weekend ............. which I think is OK. I did buy a crusty, seeded bread roll on the way home - to have for breakfast tomorrow - with marmalade!

I have seen people eating nice-looking ice-cream cones.........I have a slight desire for one with chopped nuts on top - but I could be just as happy with a home-made frozen banana 'ice-cream' with chopped nuts on top!

For anyone who read my post about putting on weight after a calorie-dense Sweekend, my weight is down to 114lbs this morning - that's down from 118lbs on Monday morning. I haven't starved myself - it's just No S N-day eating.

Wow, that's a substantial drop in less than a week. Congratulations. I love how a lot of us are always mentioning some kind of dish they'd like to eat on a lot of these posts. The ice cream cone with chopped nuts on top is one I'd forgotten about. May as well dip the top in hot chocolate as well.

Firstly well done on your August Stats they are really good and I think you are allowed one red day so go you.

And also I agree with the results for loosing weight on N days. One of the reaasons I set my weigh in day to a Saturday morning I am most likely to get my best result on that day.

I hope you have a great weekend and enjoy an ice cream if that is what you fancy on you S days :D

That 'drop' in weight, isn't really a big drop: my weight went up about 2.5lbs after my S days, then back down by the end of the week. I just mentioned it to reassure people that after an Sweekend, weight can appear to go up (mostly water) - but a week of N days will bring it back down again.

Saturday - it's raining and blowing here this morning - the ice-cream doesn't seem so appealing now! I'll keep that one for Sunday - in case the sun comes out!

I'll bet it doesn't work for me because I do S days on Friday and Sunday--Reinhard says that throws of the percentage stats, so I bet it throws off the medals too. Anyway, I wonder if you had an extra S day on a weekday or something to throw it off for you--sounds like you should have had a silver from the description otherwise!

I don't know. I've just filled in my September HabitCal with greens and yellows for the month (I just go and change it if I have a FAIL). I've put in three extra yellow days because I'm going to be visiting my son and daughter-in-law - and it gives me a Silver medal for that. So - there's evidently more of a penalty for a RED than there is for an Extra YELLOW day. Well, that seems a good system to me really - it's the REDs we want to minimize.

My Saturday was interesting - I ate three times: breakfast, lunch, dinner. I ate different foods to N days - I had a small bar of chocolate for dessert at lunch, and I had chips with dip for dinner - but there were only three eating events. I didn't feel over-stuffed, and went to bed feeling good. I am aiming for a similar day today.

excellent work on your S day. That's a good plan to follow...keeping it close to N day practices, with just one or two small "S" treats. I need to check on Habit Cal for those medals. DOn't think I've seen any for me.

Oh well. I'm not in it for HabitCal medals hahahaha!

Way to go. And on to another S day.

Monday SUCCESS

I was really hungry when I got home from work at 7.15pm (lunch was 12.30) - I heated up the lentil & veg soup I'd made yesterday. After I'd eaten the soup, I didn't feel at all hungry anymore - and as it's already 8.30pm, I'm making do with a cup of tea before bed. This easily-satiated appetite amazes me every time! Previously, I'd have squeezed something else in, just because it was there and because I'd BEEN hungry.

I seem to be playing with hunger at the moment.......

It's 12.20 (lunchtime) and I'm delaying lunch and sitting with the hunger feeling a bit longer. I have to work from 3-10pm today - so I've packed my stuffed pitta bread for 'dinner' at work and aware that I'll be late home.......... so it's almost like I'm hanging on to eat my lunch a bit later, so that I can last longer into the evening before needing to eat again. I'll eat at 1pm.

PS I ended up eating at 1.15pm because I did a WordSearch puzzle which kept me occupied!

Wednesday SUCCESS

Today I bought a pair of jeans - a size smaller! Wow! I knew my current jeans were getting baggy, but I didn't think I'd really fit the next size down. I did - and comfortably!

I felt celebratory today - several times I had food thoughts - ice-cream? no! Just one of the Extra Strong Mints I have in my bag (in case I get a cough on the bus)? no! I celebrated by buying the new jeans, some new socks, and some scented tea-lights. But the thought of celebratory food has been on my mind today.

I remember when I first started No S someone posted that you have to be hungry to lose weight. I didn't believe that at the time - but I've noticed now that if the scale goes down, I feel more hungry - so now I do believe it!

Thursday SUCCESS

tea-time was a test this evening - it was a strange meal - I had roast potatoes (just a smidgen of oil) with herbs, roast garlic, roast sweetcorn, kale chips, spicy ketchup. I had cut up and cooked two potatoes, but couldn't fit them all on my 9" plate, so left four pieces on the oven-tray. After I'd eaten, I looked at those four pieces of potato................ and put them in the bin! good-bye lovely potatoes  I cannot eat you - you are 'Seconds'

Gosh!

I had to make a quick pot of coffee and do the washing up and move away. I have a surfeit of potatoes due to getting some in my veg box which I cannot use up fast enough - so a few potato-y days are coming up!

Thanks for dropping by. Yes, I enjoyed the fruit bread, toasted with a little bit (end of the jar!) of marmalade on -and a large cup of coffee - before leaving for work at 6.45am!

I didn't do much outside my three meals today. I had a larger, sweeter breakfast than usual. I didn't snack mid-morning - just had my lunch as usual, but added in a sweet coconut macaroon as 'dessert'. In the afternoon, with a cup of tea, I had another sweet macaroon. I had dinner when I got home, and a small bar of dark chocolate for 'dessert' and another nice cup of coffee; just can't beat the one I have at home! That's it.

I saw a lower number than usual on the scale this morning..... kind of encouraged me.

Sunday, and I've got apple slices and peanut butter for a mid-morning snack, and a green smoothie (apple, carrot, celery, spinach, banana, green powder mix) for lunch - the off to work with packed dinner of a carrot/raisin/peanut/chilli mayo wholewheat wrap, a gooseberry yoghurt - and two coconut macaroons for afternoon or evening snack.

Where have the crisps, chocolate, ice-cream and sweets gone? Not here this week at least!

I had a pair of jeans in my give-away pile and pulled them out on a whim. They are the size I pretty much wear now. I thought, oh, were these in there by mistake? But when I tried them on, they bagged in the wrong places. I don't HAVE to wear form-fitting clothes all the time, but I know I could find loose jeans that look better than those did. And since they can go to good use, I hope, it's just as well I give them away. I wore unflattering clothes long enough!

But I try not to be attached to the size. If they have a big size sewn in, but they look good, who cares?

I know that sizes vary a great deal, but you know, when you are looking for clothes you go to 'your size' first....... I went to the Size 10, instead of the Size 12. I also bought some knickers (panties?) in the smaller size and they feel good too! My tops are generally two sizes larger than my bottoms!

Monday FAILURE

This was ONE chocolate - I was at my friend's house, and she'd had visitors staying. There were two chocolates (lovely dark chocolate/quality!) left in a box and she said "one each". I did suggest leaving them for her husband.......... but we had one each with a cup of tea. Afterwards she said I was right, we should have left them for her husband - she regretted eating it because she'd had so much to eat while her visitors were there. (She's not overweight - and is a very sensible eater). I ate it to be friendly - having weighed it up as being 'just one'. It was lovely - but I could definitely have been quite fine without it!

Tuesday FAILURE

I had a great day - but stuck my hand in the peanut jar after dinner. I can't figure out why - I'd had a perfectly fine dinner and felt 'full'. The only thing I can think of was that I'd had an appraisal at work and maybe I 'needed' to crunch and smash something with my teeth?!?! If I'd realised that, I could have put the peanuts on my plate........ Not only that, but I stuck my hand in the jar twice!

It always kind of surprises me when I 'break the rules'..... it feels like those behaviours are never far away and No S has to stay in place, like a harness!

I finished my eating for the day with a nice cup of coffee. Not the best thing to drink in the evening, but it stops me even thinking about eating anything else.

Ah, a fine chocolate is so hard to resist. Any chance it was worth it?

but an apple is quite filling. If it ever happens that my dinner is going to be real late, I will eat an apple and not count it a red day. Better that, than coming to dinner so hungry you eat everything in sight. which happened to me yesterday.

great news about the smaller size! well done

Ah, the one chocolate last Monday WAS worth it - it was really good - but I could totally have lived without it too!

I agree that apples are filling - they are just not as crave-able as salted peanuts (for me)

Looking at your stats, you should move here to the US. You'd be a size 4 here...lol

really!?!?! I was wondering what the US size equivalent was! wow! and I'm not skinny by any means!

Friday was SUCCESS

Saturday is interesting - I enjoyed marmalade on toast for breakfast. I have a lentil soup in the slow-cooker and a bread roll to enjoy. I am planning to make a raw strawberry and apple cobbler. But when I went shopping this morning, I picked up a knock-down price pack of two Oreo doughnuts - they were pretty disgusting really - but I ate them with my coffee and that was 'lunch'! 326 kcals in each doughnut. OK - well, I got that out of my system, right?!

I know this is because there have been discussions about doughnuts in my environment this past week - I don't even usually eat doughnuts! Gosh - our minds are SO vulnerable to suggestion!

Saturday - home after three days' away visiting family and amazed to find I am the same weight as I was on the morning I left (Wednesday)! However, I didn't like the chaotic pattern of eating........ and my body felt very out-of-sorts digestively! Glad to be home to the relative calm of a self-controlled S weekend! I found it hard to be in a house where there were snack foods around: snack bars, savoury snack bags.

I feel like I've eaten quite a lot this weekend, but I haven't really......... weight will be up a bit because I've eaten bread and pastry items, which always makes me heavier for a while. Also trying to drink more water each day - it's not something I find easy to do.

I've just roughed out a Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner plan for Monday at least - been feeling tired and lazy this week (holiday week off from work) and must make the effort tomorrow to plan my three meals a day for the coming week.

To fail to plan, is to plan to fail. I find that is so true. Spontaneity isn't wise when it comes to food (at least not for those of us who need to keep control of things!)

Monday SUCCESS

I put on just over 2lb after the Sweekend. If I wasn't a seasoned No S-er I'd be freaked out by that! But experience tells me that two N days will see the scale go back down. Although I have just eaten quite a large bowl of pasta - it was a 'normal' serving size, but more than my usual 9" plate.

Tuesday SUCCESS

I used my 9" plate this evening - I'd made a cauliflower cheese, potatoes, peas & carrot - and I could only get 3/4 of what I'd prepared onto the plate (without it overflowing!). I did have a peach for 'dessert'. I've settled into a routine where I almost always have fruit with my meal - usually after the main dish.

Now I have another bowl of cauliflower cheese & potato that will make a meal for tomorrow!

It really does seem that weight and cravings can follow the events that prompt them much later than it seems they should. But we are talking about small differences now, no?

I posted agreement on Spark about how having relative control over our eating surely does seem to help. I felt at times that was so solid in the habits that I could weather just about anything, but it was likely only because I didn't get challenged much. It's annoying to admit, until I realize that it's only logical, since most people in slim cultures are that way because the culture supports slim habits.

If size 4 isn't skinny, Goddess help us. Not that skinny matters.

did you read the article about Japanese children not being obese, pointing to the dearth of snacking in Japanese culture as one of the reasons? In this land, it is SERIOUSLY difficult to "diet" because everywhere you turn, there is cheap fattening snack food. If you miss it while shopping, you can grab something while you wait to check out, and if you don't happen to get something in the grocery store, there is a gas station c-store on every corner.

Even the non snack convenience foods aren't conducive to healthy eating patterns. It's like they want us fat. [end rant]

isn't that something, that your digestion was out of whack due to the extra snacking, and isn't it telling that your word for it is "chaotic"...wow. It just amazes me how much genuine peace/calm/serenity is available in this No S thing. Glad you had fun, and glad you came away relatively unscathed, poundage-wise.

Thanks for your comments - and I totally agree with you about the way it's almost like they want us to be fat! I didn't have a really robust plan when I went into the shop after work today, and wandered around looking at all the stuff - took me ages to select the least damaging 'treats' for the weekend!

Addiction, moderation, and slaying the dragon

Post by RAWCOOKIE » Sat Oct 01, 2016 5:59 am

8) you're welcome!

This morning, Saturday morning (quite early - before 7am!) I came down, made my coffee, got my packed lunch ready for the day........... and sampled the cookies I'd chosen yesterday.

I know that sugar is a big thing for me, and it's incredible that I now go 5 days every week without sugar! That HAS to be GOOD. And I'm so aware of the hyper-palatable nature of an 'All Butter Triple Chocolate Cookie: a finely balanced trio of dark, milk & white chocolate'

As I don't have 100% abstinence from sugar, on S days I do allow myself to enjoy some. So, my control measures have to be at the point-of-purchase. Hence my roaming around the shop last night!

I picked up the 380g box of shortbread which was only 1GBP on special offer. I cruised past all the 'seasonal' items now on display - the shiny, pretty, bags and boxes of special cookies for Xmas!

The shortbread was good value - maybe I could split the package and keep some for next week, and the week after? I knew I probably wouldn't be able to keep my hands off them - so I put them back.

I decided, in the end, to get the box of 8 chocolate chip cookies at 118kcals each - so the damage for the entire box will be under 1000 kcals (which I find is about the size of a usual S-day bender!)

I had four for breakfast! And I've stopped there. I can have the other four this afternoon. It's allowed.

But now that I've been doing No S for some time, I can really see how much effort I have to put in to control the urges that are still there when it comes to sugar, fat, wheat, salt combinations where the water has been driven out by baking (cookies, potato chip type things, roasted, salted anything really!). It's not 'addiction' per se - because I don't go around trying to score - but it's like an intermittent addiction. I can subdue it most of the time - but if allowed, it will come to life - like waking the dragon in the dark cave!

I think this is where Reinhard's system works best for me - he doesn't try to eradicate the dragon - but gives me a way to manage it. That's a reality check.

On the other hand, MODERATION is proving to be a slow-burning but enduring habit-formation.........After a work week that left me feeling internally irritated grrrrrrrr - I decided on pizza, salad & wine for Friday night. Pre-No S that would have been a blow-out with a whole (meant for two people) pizza, a whole bag of salad (to be good!) and about 200ml glass of wine. Last night it was half a pizza (one person serving), a small bowl of salad (side dish), and about 90ml wine, oh, and 6 strawberries. That's MODERATION used against the DRAGON. Win!

i also count pizza for one person as one plate...
it is bigger than my usual 9" plates but still a plate in my book... as long as i dont eat pizza every day, nor more than 2 times a week max... or 3 times a day, hahahah...
and yes, simple salad on the side is a must to most of my meals... including pizza, most of the times...

and congratulations on a nice september!

Rawcookie I love your story about the cookies!! That is totally me. Fresh baked goods are my weakness. When I bake I always LOVE LOVE LOVE what I make. Bananna bread, cookies, rice krispy treats, carrot cake, cinnamon rolls with icing, sugar cookies with powdered sugar icing. I have to be extra careful about having these things around. No S has been the best thing for me though. It's such a great system of failing but getting right back up. It's trained me how avoid getting to the point of what the hell 99% of the time. And even better is that the very few times I've gotten there, it's much more controled than in the past. But I'm with you, some things are just too tempting to have around & use up too much will power to avoid when they are right there (:

Yeah, I call mine the Sugar Beast and avoid triggering it at all costs. It always sets me up for cravings (and caving) if I wake the Beast. It's a LOT like addiction, isn't it. The aftermath is not pretty.

but you did good. I'm proud of you for setting aside half your cookies :) good job!

Monday SUCCESS

I was really hungry when I was supporting people to cook their evening meals between 4.30-6pm........... very glad I had a veggie curry just waiting to be re-heated when I got home. I also made myself a frozen banana, cocoa & vanilla 'dessert'. The fruit-based dessert seems to have stuck with me as a kind of 'mod' that feels acceptable to me. Mostly it's just straight fruit. The frozen banana tricks my brain into thinking it's had ice-cream!

Today I got a gold star: firstly I went to an art viewing and had a glass of sparkling wine and did not take any of the very nibbly nibbles. Then I went to a cool cafe with my friend, and only had coffee - even when offered 'cake?'

You know the 'carrot & stick' thing about getting people to do what you want? Well, I've realised that I'm definitely a 'carrot' person. Oh my goodness, does my psychology love the 'carrot'!

I love the little green face on the HabitCal - it motivates me! A little green face! It's like a 'star chart' I suppose........ so simple, so effective (for me!)

And knowing that I have a 'treat' (aka 'carrot') in the ice box for the weekend can help be to abstain on Thursday and Friday. This week I have a small tub of frozen mango & coconut yoghurt - chosen over the full-fat, creamy, Salted Caramel Karma ice-cream!

Today will be a GREEN day for sure - I'm heading for the next 'carrot'!

me too! it motivates me, reminds me and keeps me focused...
i love the reds, too... they keep me real... in the sense that there is no surprise if noS should start "not working" for me... and that i do have a leeway for little mistakes, and tracking which ones they are, precisely...
but i think i might be able to let the tracking go at one point... i just want to keep it long enough (at least a year or two), never to forget i can come back to it in case i lose my focus and/or motivation...

Thursday was a brilliantly SUCCESSFUL day!

I did my shopping after work, and was able to practice moderation in my food selection. So cool when it works 8)
I ended up with 7.5 hrs between lunch & dinner - and I was fine! I've lost my fear of feeling hungry, this has been massive for me; I am so grateful.

way to go! green days, sanity in grocery shopping and YESS! It is absolutely wonderful, almost miraculous, not fearing a hunger feeling! I am SO GLAD to have gotten there, myself.

Way to go, and keep on truckin.

Thank you!

Friday SUCCESS

I have my S-weekend planned and a couple of nice treats lined up. I will be at work over the weekend. I often find that my S days are a bit more chaotic when I'm at work because having snack-food in my bag tends to be attractive! Also, I find that once I start snacking - like a couple of cookies at mid-morning - I'm more likely to want more snacks later - it makes me feel 'hungry'. So - I'm planning to stick to just eating at meal times, but adding in a dessert/snack with the meal.

This weekend I have a packet of gluten-free chocolate biscuits/cookies, a tub of mango & coconut frozen yoghurt, a bar of hazelnut milk chocolate. I'm really looking forward to those flavours and textures tomorrow!

Saturday, and I managed to stick to my plan of only eating once at work today - just lunch-time. Then I waited until dinner-time at home to eat again.

I was also very moderate with my sweets, snacks & seconds. 8)

Sunday

I enjoyed banana pancakes with dark chocolate grated in the mix this morning - I cooked enough for 2 people - so I had my serving, then I had seconds  oh yeah!

I'm off to work at midday - back tomorrow morning - so I've packed my lunch, dinner & breakfast. The only extra thing for S day is 8 squares of hazelnut milk chocolate to have as 'dessert' with my dinner tonight.

Sane & luscious! 8)

Monday SUCCESS

Today I had a real victory for The Habit: I cut my finger quite badly in the garden (cut myself with the secateurs - chop, chop!) and really felt the pull to comfort myself with something sweet (there is some chocolate left over from the weekend). It was like my brain was really squirming around trying to find an argument that would justify it. Sick? No, not really. Shock? No, not really the best solution anyway. I looked after myself, did the first aid, had a dose of Rescue Remedy and a cup of tea. THEN, my brain started another try - didn't I deserve some chocolate for being so brave? No, not really. I made another cup of tea and went and lay on the carpet reading for about an hour. That was comforting and rewarding enough. Gosh our brains are sneaky though. I was really glad that The Habit held firm.

I had a chickpea stew with couscous for dinner, then some berries and some home-made custard with 1tsp of Sweet Freedom - so barely sweet, but a way to get that 'need' met.

Tuesday and Wednesday both GREEN! SUCCESSES

I had dressed my wound to give firm pressure and complete protection. Last night I got the courage to uncover my finger and inspect it; it looks clean (thank heavens, as it was with secateurs that were covered in garden stuff). The laceration was closed, so I was careful not to open it (clean cuts are the hardest to heal!). I covered it up again for work today. Tomorrow I may risk 'just a plaster'.

Thursday and Friday both SUCCESSFUL

looking forward to a lovely S weekend - I've got some nice food (not all sweet!) to enjoy - like some Cheatin' Rashers for a fake bacon sandwich on Saturday lunch-time! Some gorgeous organic malted wheat bread - toast & marmalade on Sunday! Banana pancakes on Saturday morning, with some dark choc chips and a drizzle of fruit syrup with a big mug of fresh coffee - oh yum! I must get to bed now, so that Saturday comes more quickly! It's like Xmas Eve!

I've really enjoyed my weekend & having a couple of days off work.

I've been eating three meals a day at the weekends now - and the 'snacks' are getting smaller and less sugary! This week I bought a small packet of gluten/dairy/egg free ginger cookies and was able to eat just two at a time. I had two in the morning with my first coffee, in bed, reading - this felt like being on holiday! I had two mid-afternoon with my cuppa. It's a nice change not to be going back to the box for more (as I used to!).
:)
This was me this time last year: "In the afternoon I had 6 ginger biscuits from a packet of 12 (instead of eating all 12 like last week!)"
:)
Last night I got a DVD to watch at home, and had a bowl of home-made popcorn. Then had a little 'eating jag' of a couple of handfuls of peanuts and some plain tacos. I haven't done that for ages - it wasn't excessive, and it wasn't sweet!

My weight has been pretty stable at around the 115lb mark for a couple of months, so I felt confident enough to update my signature. Nearly 10lbs just doing No S. I'm happy!

Thanks. Today was FAIL. I'm not sure why; it might be due to malted wheat bread I've had recently - I suspect 'malted' might involve sugar because I've felt like snacking a couple of hours' after eating some. Lesson learned!

I didn't have any huge snack - this afternoon I had a friend with me and at mid-afternoon I offered her my home-made date/nut/cocoa raw brownie balls - and had some myself. It was small - but it was a snack. Then, when I started preparing tea, I ate the crust of malted bread that was left from lunch-time.

I haven't made a very robust meal plan for this week - which is unusual for me. I'm short of cash, so need to plan what the *&!% I'm going to eat!

Wednesday SUCCESS

Thursday SUCCESS

Thursday was unusual for me: I had a slow start to the day, and decided to leave breakfast and wait for lunch. So I only had two meals on Thursday - it was fine.

I am finding that my appestat is now programmed to give me an 'eat' signal at the same times every day - three times: around 6am/midday/6pm (about a 60-120 mins flexibility around those times). On Wednesday I had a late breakfast before going to work at midday - I didn't think I'd need my lunch until about 2pm - but about 12.30 I got the 'signal' to eat my lunch - so I did!

Friday SUCCESS

I've got more 'weekend' food in my cupboard than usual. I am aware of them, but I don't feel drawn to them. It's a bit of a test for myself really - it doesn't matter if I eat it all - but I'm going to aim to be 'moderate' which will mean having quite a lot of it left on Monday morning! I'm curious to see what happens! I'm just less 'hungry' than I used to be. Maybe one day I'll be able to have those things in the cupboard and 'forget' about them. As it is, I've been thinking about them on/off all day: Bombay Mix (hot), chocolate with hazelnuts, triple choc cookies (gluten-free).

My weight has been under 114lbs for the past two days - I know that's not a 'fixed' point, but it's a sign that I'm moving in the lighter direction.

The chocolate had the strongest 'pull' - I didn't eat it all in one go, but it was all gone by Sunday lunch-time.

The cookies were, more-or-less, eaten as planned - two at a time over the weekend.

There is 90g of Bombay Mix still in the bag - so I ate 160g over the weekend.

I was out of the house (at work) on Saturday from mid-morning until bed-time; then at on Sunday (at work) from midday until Monday midday. I think if I'd been at home all weekend, I'd probably have finished off the Bombay Mix too.

If it's in the house, and it's an S day, it'll probably be eaten! all of it!

I'm controlled, but not cured!

Wednesday FAILURE

A buffet party at work, which I thought I'd prepared my strategy for, ended up with me eating left-over cake and Pringles :?

Thursday FAILURE

Yesterday's fail kind of leaked over into today - I ate half my packed dinner mid-afternoon, and also snitched another handful of left-over Pringles.

The worse thing is not the food, it's how I feel. I feel so horrible knowing that that person who eats crazily is still hiding inside of me just waiting to break out!

Part of the behaviour, I think, is due to the fact that my weight has gone down to a lower level than I've seen for a few years - and maybe, subconsciously, I'm trying to get it back up again?

dear rawcookie...
you have been doing so amazingly well so far... 2 red days in a row are nothing!!
just mark them and move on...

yeah, the beast is still in there (that beast is also smtms fun, no?)... but the beast is also out there - i mean you have been tempted and you gave in... and just remember how many times you havent... and that to give in sometimes doesnt have to mean you will always give in...

mark it and move on!! 8)

This is my post from 30th October 2015 - I love to go back 12 months to get perspective on how much progress I've made.
RAWCOOKIE wrote:
..... I know it's not wise to get excited about scale readings - but I weigh pretty much every morning to take the power out of it - and this morning I saw 8stone 8.75lbs. That is the first time I've seen 8.8 for a VERY LONG TIME. And although I know I might not see it again for a while, the knowledge that my trend line is heading downwards is really encouraging. This is just from doing No S as it's written - no extra restrictions.

:D
Despite having three red days this October - overall, all my meals are smaller than they used to be, and my REDS are all quite minor compared to what they used to be! I now weigh 8.3 sometimes 8.1 - so that's another half a stone down - just doing No S! Win!

Sunday

This week I decided to buy only 'alternative' things as treats: dairy-free dark chocolate; gluten/dairy/egg-free cookies, potato-free snacks (lentil-based)! hahaha! Well, it pretty much worked actually. I ate all my treats yesterday, except for four of the cookies (9 in the pack) which I enjoyed this afternoon with a cup of coffee. Very sane and feels MUCH better!

Monday SUCCESS

Today is Hallowe-en - with the associated sweets, treats, cakes, unhealthy snack foods abounding! I had to 'endure' the sight of 10 people eating CRAP food before I could end my shift today. I was listening to a podcast about insulin resistance yesterday, and could see so clearly how all those people must be insulin resistant - they eat about every 2-3 hrs, and it's always processed and/or carb-laden. A bit naughty, but I made a 'nil by mouth' person I support laugh by whispering in his ear 'look at them all getting FAT by eating CRAP!' (it made him giggle - it helps me to be a non-eater too when we're in those eating situations). Gosh I was hungry on the way home - and was grateful that the local supermarket could sell me a bag of ready-cut stir-fry mixture to cook up with some noodles. My nod to Hallowe'en was a glass of red wine with my dinner.
