silk001 check in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

silk001 check in

Post by Silk001 » Wed May 03, 2017 6:36 pm

Hi Everyone! I am new here although I've read about NoS in the past but not attempted it. I'm currently on Day 3 and had 2 successful days.

I am 42, 3 kids (12, 10, 4), and would like to lose 10-15 pounds. My BMI is just in the healthy range for my height -- 24.9, but I feel more comfortable at a lower weight.

NoS sounds very sane to me. I know before starting that the hardest thing for me will be the slow weight loss. Really hoping to stick with it even though the scale probably won't move much.

Enjoyed reading all of your check in threads!!

Welcome Silk001, As if being a Mom to three kids isn't already enough, try to layer on a simple activity to boost your metabolism which gives a jump start to weight loss. Walking is my favorite, because it only requires sneakers or walking shoes, no gym memberships or special training. Good luck reaching your goals.

The first four days have been GREEN.

So far my meals have been fairly big and filling. I'm using 8.5 inch plates and sticking to 3 plates. I haven't been hungry and nothing really tempting me to snack. But I also feel like "How could I possibly lose weight on this?"

Yesterday was:

B: Kefir yogurt with strawberries and 4 slices bacon
L: leftover chicken fajitas (2 tortillas, chicken, peppers, cheese) and a pile of carrots
D: Spaghetti and meatballs (homemade) and 2 pieces of garlic toast

So we'll see...

Day 4 GREEN

B: Starbucks sausage egg cheese muffin, banana, coffee with cream
L: 2 chicken fajitas (tortillas, chicken, bell peppers, cheese)
D: ate out. Had to virtual plate because salad came first. Also had steak, mashed potatoes, and a small piece of bread. Plate was average size so that was good. Couldn't quite finish all of it. Also had a glass of wine.

Went for a 2.5 mile fast walk today and did some squats and push-ups.

Stepped on the scale tonight. Looks like I've already gained some weight. Good grief. I guess I won't be surprised if I gain. I am full after meals and am not hungry for about 4 hours-- so just in time for the next meal. How do people lose weight doing this?

For me, I think the weight loss comes from the fact that although my meals stay pretty much the same, and I still make an effort to make my meals healthy, as I did before, with No S I'm cutting out the snacks in between meals and the sweets throughout the week. For me that was probably two snacks a day and two small chocolate bars a day. Probably about 400-500 calories a day. That's 2,000-2,5000 calories cut out a week.
I CAN do this.

Sky cat-- I agree. My meals are pretty much the same. Maybe a little smaller because I'm not having seconds of the bread or starchy portion. And definitely no sweets where I would have had chocolate or candy with my meals.
I just feel like I'm gaining weight -- kind of bloated feeling even. Which can't be good after 5 N days and now about to have treats on my S days. &#128563;

Food for yesterday N day:

B: sausage/egg/cheese muffin and banana and coffee

L: big oatmeal with rolled oats, small handfuls of blueberries, raisins, coconut, slivered almonds and a little maple syrup for sweetener and milk. Plus 4 slices bacon

D: out with friends and so proud of myself for eating moderately. It had been
6 hours since lunch so I was getting hungry but managed to hold off until dinner.
Prime rib dip sandwich with broccoli and small glass of wine.
I ate all of it and wasn't super stuffed. Sandwich and plate were pretty moderate size and I was hungry!

That's great. You got it just right! That's part of what is so great about this way of eating, it's so easy to fit into social events.

S day number 1 was pretty decent. I ate some pretty S type foods (hello donuts) but not so much of them.

S day number 2 was pretty crazy. And I didn't feel so good last night or this morning. Back at it for this N day so hopefully the nausea will wear off. Tried to be moderate yesterday, but just really enjoyed way, way too many cookies in addition to just alot of food!

If it's any consolation, I don't think eventual success is correlated with wild S days in the beginning. Mine wasn't. But would feel like crying when I tried to impose limits. Finally I came up with an acceptable mod. WAAAAY down the line for me.

The contrast between S and N days is one of the best motivations to rein them in.
