Jen's checkin thread

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

After posting a green last night, I went to put away the leftovers from dinner and ate some lamb. Changing it to a fail. Minor though.

Hi, jenji! Has anyone else asked where you get those little icons? I am not very savvy about these things.

Looks like you've had a good run with No S so far. Here's to finishing 2017 strong and into 2018. :!:

Hi Oolala, if you post from your phone or ipad, you can use the emoji keyboards (if you have them there). You can also copy and paste my calendar and edit it for you. In the testing folder, I also have a January calendar up and ready.

I make the calendar at the beginning of the month, then copy and paste it with each day edited. Does that make sense?

Thanks for responding. It does make sense theoretically, but I have never been able to copy and paste any calendar from anywhere to anywhere on Everyday Systems. I do the steps, but it comes out mush, in essence.

Guess I just have to add icons as I go.

I'm too lazy to look back. Did I ask you what your non-profit is? Tx

Now I have to wrestle with shame because the high here today was in the mid-70's and I've been inside all day.

My non-profit recruits and oversees about 1,000 tutors and mentors who work in the public schools. I love the people I work with, but the fundraising aspect of it is often stressful (not enough money).

Wow, that's ambitious and impressive. But Lord knows most schools don't have the money for such endeavors. And it's laudable that the staff gets any pay, though I"m sure it's modest. I may at some point recover  from my teaching career enough to do some tutoring. It definitely is different working with individual or a smaller number of kids, even if they're not particularly enthusiastic. But I'd like to think I have something else in store for me, as it was more a practical decision to go into it, rather than a calling.

I did one yoga workout this weekend, on Friday. Other than that, my only exercise has been a couple long walks.

On Saturday we hit 10,000 steps, even though it was butt-cold. Sorry for cursing, but it's cursing-level cold outside in Massachusetts. Even the cat can't take it. My whole family bundled up in our puffy coats and face masks and walked to my friend's house near Harvard Square and back. It was a nice party.

After a week at home, I am feeling ready for my regular routine again.

I haven't been weighing myself - thought I would give it a few days so as not to freak myself out with holiday ups and downs. I will this weekend.

I did a little Shovelglove yesterday and today. Trying to add in listening to an audiobook to make it more enticing. I'm listening to Tiffany Haddish's book right now.

I've thought of visiting family in Lynn and asking Reinhard to lunch, though not for oatmeal. I figured he might do it because I would then be gone and not start stalking him. I've always admired that he didn't try to turn this into an empire, though honestly, I sometime wish he would.

Funny! There are a lot of cool people in my city, especially for someone like me who is a reader. I get to interact with some of my favorite authors, scientists, etc. The perks of living in a university town.

I served myself a small dinner, because it was rich (included fondue). But I impulsively ate seconds of the rice and beans when clearing up. Then I stayed up late listening to an audiobook and working, and before I went to bed, I ate some yogurt and cereal. I am not too worried because it was a day of tough workouts of snow shoveling and walking a couple of miles in deep snow. Planning to stay green today.

Rich foods can mess with our expectations. It's so small! But we don't need much and yet it really does seem very common that when people start in on an S, they have more later. I often do the same thing, or did while I was going through my hiatus. Who knows why. I say it works to go cold turkey or just taper off. You'll know which when you try.

And it's great that you didn't turn it into WTH!

S day tomorrow...

Good news and bad news... the good news is that even on failure days, my lapses are small. I keep the habits most of the time. Also, I have worked several Shovelglove sessions into my routine this week, on top of walks and real snow shoveling.

Bad news is that yesterday was another fail. Baking c**kies “for the kidsâ€. 😂 Oh well, back on the horse.

Other good news is that I weighed myself today and am down to 173.5

Tons of awesome!

I am in awe of people who can bake any sweets and not fail egregiously. One of the women on a Sparkteam I'm on, who used to weigh 220 and has stabilized at about 150 for a few years, plus was a binger, can do it. I feel like my even trying would be like the Wicked Witch of the West trying to touch the ruby slippers. (sorry if I've used that analogy here before. It's been in my mind and it's so accurate.)

I found out today, though, that she still has fears about certain foods. She said that strawberries and cream with a little sugar scared her. Something like that apparently even relatively recently could send her into a tailspin. I was thinking, "You can bake cookies but fear cream and sugar?" I don't mean to be nasty about it. It's one of the paradoxes we all have. I guess with the baking, she doesn't allow even one bite. And I'm finding now that small amounts of some foods are actually not very satisfying. I don't want just a little: I want a LOT. But I still mess with myself on that.

I doubt I'll ever get to be a baker again because there is no one in my life that I need to take such risks for. I don't enjoy most baked flour foods anymore as much as other starches. I'd rather get good at, say, making my own salad dressings that I like as much as Annie's Green Goddess. If there were kids involved, I doubt they'd get excited about that.

But am I in the kitchen experimenting? I am not!

Have a great weekend.

Oh, Fridays were tough for me at one point. I used to make a Bisquick biscuit and eat it with strawberries, a whoosh of stevia, and plain yogurt. I could have had it every day, theoretically, but saved it for Fridays so I would feel like I was celebrating the end of the workweek while staying compliant.

I am also trying to come up with a compliant treat for Friday. Some Fridays I've have one small glass of white wine to relax before bed and enjoyed it. However, I've found that if I have that wine while out and about, such as at a party, I am more likely to eat again later. It only works as my final sip of the day while sitting on my couch.

I don't think I should bake unless I have people at home to eat it. I make a half batch of c**kie batter, then freeze half, leaving me with a quarter batch to cook. That puts automatic controls on portions.

Green day today. Full plates, but still green. I just had steak and black bean tacos for dinner. I ate my lunch in two sittings, because I got interrupted, but it was only one plate. No exercise yet, but I am hoping to finish a grant request tonight and then do 15 minutes of SG or weights.

Stressful day, but green. I love when I can prove to myself that scary and hectic work events do not have to change my eating in any substantive way. I did not get lunch until 2:45, but I had a little juice at 1:00 to tide my over. Sushi for lunch and dinner: supermarket sushi roll for lunch and real sushi dinner tonight with my kid.

Wednesday = Green. I'm at 174# again, recovered from the holidays.
I walked to work today because parking has been nutty with the snow.

176 this morning. Going for another green week. Today is a holiday, so I am home from work. Started the morning with a nice brekkie of scrambled egg, some leftover refried black beans, and an orange. Plus I made myself a latte.

Oh, and I'm re-reading the book. :)

Wed = green
173.5 today
When I started No S, I decided to allow myself the mod of eating an apple between meals. I was eating an apple between meals or after dinner quite often, 1-2 a day. Now that my appetite is tamed a bit, I am trying to skip the apple and just power through to the meals (which might include fruit) or go to bed. I still don't consider it a red day if I have one, but I am just seeing if I can keep eating to meals.

I call using something like the apple “easing in†to the habit. Reinhard says the hardest thing about having something like an apple is that then people might fill their plates with something else more dense because they feel they’ve gotten their fruit quota in. But you sound very realistic.

175.5 this morning. Although Reinhard recommends not weighing often, I know that for myself, periods of not weighing myself have led to weight gain. I spend a few weeks in yoga pants or some other forgiving clothing, and next time I check, things have gone to Hell in a handbasket. So I weigh every day or every other day. I really like the Happy Scale app. Despite what looks like a lot of up and down to me, I can see that my moving average weight has gone steadily down since I started No S in October.

Decided to make myself some lentil soup for lunch today. I think that some of my better weight loss weeks were associated with doing a dietary default of veggie, black bean, or lentil soup for 2-3 lunches that week.

I browned scallions in a little bit of pork fat, and when they started to crisp, I threw in red lentils, curry powder, some garlic, and water. When the lentils were tender, I threw in a half cup of marinara sauce that I had leftover from a pasta dinner that I made on Friday. It was delicious.

Maybe black bean soup for tomorrow's lunch.

Jen, I am in the same boat with the scale and the yoga pants—and that boat will quickly go the way of the handbasket. I also use Happy Scale and it's made a lot of sense of a lot of data for me.

175 this morning. I did some virtual plating today because I ate lunch from the hot bar at the supermarket, and they didn't have plates. I will give myself a green today but admit I'm not sure. I'm not going to write it all down, but suffice it to say they would've made a generous plate with some stacks. I think in the future, I should either take it back to the office or bring a plate.

173 this morning! Woo hoo! I’ve been hovering close to it for a while but finally inched down a bit. I know weights bounce around, but hoping to keep that downward slope going (holidays had a bit of an upway trend). Overall I’m down 11 since I started.âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸

Thinking about riding my bike today because I have back-to-back meetings in areas where parking is a pain. Need to check for black ice.

172 this morning. Green yesterday, although I ate two apples between meals, a mod I've been thinking of phasing out.

I had a non-scale victory, too: I went to an Indian buffet, and only did one normal plate, not a crazy, stuffed plate.

I'm REALLY impressed about the Indian buffet! and glad for any other changes that are important to you.

I find that once I got honest about what went on my plate- I have general guidelines about how much dense food is needed/acceptable- the scale pretty much followed it, so I have weighed only sporadically for a few years. I did it a lot more in the beginning, though I don't think it had much influence on my behavior. It was more of a curiosity. My issue was binging/compulsive overeating and the data shows that just stopping those doesn't automatically lead to weight loss, as people may shift their calories unconsciously to other meals of better quality food. Over time, I ate smaller amounts and weight did drop. Even now, I want to keep monitoring overeating as that bothers me more than weight gain.

172.5 today. Wasn't sure how to score yesterday, because we went to this Korean place with small plates, and I was trying to virtual plate, but then gave up. I'm going to be honest with myself and take the fail. I did not turn it into a what the hell moment - did not get ice cream after dinner when my family did, and just enjoyed a little espresso for my treat.

Ugh too much sugar today and yesterday. I was happy with my treat yesterday, but today I bought a box of GS cookies from my kid's troop at their booth sale, and I ate more than half a box. Eek.

Back to normal tomorrow, phew.

176# this morning. Okay, back to reality and N-day discipline.

I had potato paratha and an apple for breakfast with some leftover lamb.

Lunch - tadka dal and an Asian pear. Hoping to squeeze in a walk at lunch, too.

173.5 today. More chili for lunch. Having a latte now.

Today will technically be a fail because I had some fruit pie with breakfast, but I kept it all on one plate and am eating on plan other than my dessert-y brekkie. I am not worried about it, but I am marking it a fail because I think pie for breakfast regularly will not do me any favors, habit-wise.

I am having that sabotage moment where you meet a major goal (great A1c bloodwork), and therefore you feel that you are done and can eat whatever. I have complied with No S pretty well since October, and suddenly I found myself thinking of having a second plate of pasta tonight. I shorted myself on lunch due to being busy, but my dinner was plenty big enough.

I recognized the bratty feeling and rinsed my bowl and put it in the sink. Now I am typing this instead of eating pasta. I am not hungry, so that's good.

I will have some tea or even warm milk in a bit.

Oh, way to go, Jen! Gratz on the great bloodwork! That feels so good, doesn't it?

I do find it interesting how positive results can sway us just like bad ones. A better number on the scale can actually tempt me to loosen up more rather than less... Gratz for doing good things under temptation!

I just realized I do that all the time! It's like I think I deserve a (food) reward at the drop of a hat! Although your A1C results are not a simple dropped hat.

That's why having a weight goal or something like it that is dependent on another event can backfire. Once you reach the goal, you're stuck with coming up with a new one. I see on Spark that people who've reached their weight loss goal struggle because they don't get the thrill of loss showing up on the scale. I guess their new eating isn't a reward in itself...

GREAT job on sidestepping the old habit! That's the way it's done!

Technically a fail last night because I ate dried mango after getting home from the Phantom Returns (sequel to Phantom of the Opera). But it was a small fail.

172.5 again this morning.

One thing that has made this diet relatively painless for me was that I already ate, and often cooked, three meals a day. I think if you don’t cook, the first step of No S should be learning 10 recipes you like, including veggies, then worry about not eating sweets, seconds, or snacks later.

There is no way I’d be happy on this diet if my lunches were wrap sandwiches. That is the thing I get in our school caf when the hot entrée is sold out. So frigging boring and tasteless. When did we all decide to eat wraps? I did not sign onto that Wrap Compact.

A burrito is fine, not as good as tacos but definitely tasty. A wrap is a cold, stiff, al dente container of sadness. It’s hard to tell if they taste like the plastic container it come in, or if that’s its natural taste. And they crowded out pita bread in the world, when fresh pita is legitimately delicious! Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Sorry if you like wraps, but I am firm in my beliefs.

I rang the S bell tonight. We went to a little Mexican restaurant, Tu y Yo, for dinner, and ate tamales and fish tacos, and then went next door to a place that specializes in fresh baked cookies made into ice cream sandwiches. I got a half, which is actually one whole cookie with ice cream, and deliciously plenty. We also got sangria, yum.

I am a foodie! I cook a lot on the weekend so that meal prep during the week is easier. Currently cooking pinto beans either for soup or chili, can’t decide, and oven-baked country-style pork ribs. I wrap the ribs in foil to keep them tender. I will use them for tacos and possibly chili, too.

I had many 3-lb. gains over just one S day. I did track the daily weight, but don't remember noticing when it dropped back each week. By the next Friday the average was back for sure (I still weighed every day and averaged once a week, though weight loss was not my issue even if I was fat; just curiosity.) I "stalled" many times which was ok. The habits were so superior to how I was living before!

Yes, I agree, the habits are worth it in and of themselves. Although I am also interested in weight loss and hoping to get to a weight maintaining place sometime this summer.

Hi Jen! I am a lurker who posts occasionally. I read your entry today and felt a voice of desperation. I wanted to offer my .2 cents. Take it or leave it.
You want to establish habits but you also desire to lose fat by summer. I see that you practice Vanilla NoS. Prior to trying Vanilla NoS this January I was implementing Lifeisablessing's mod for about a year. Three meals, no snacks, no seconds, sweet/snacks included at any meal 7 days a week. It worked beautifully for me! I reached my goal! A couple of months ago I went through some stressful times/health issues and went off the plan. I gained some fat back, about 5 lbs. I came back to NoS about a month ago. I wanted back the structure and sanity around food but I also wanted to lose the fat I gained.I decided to try Vanilla NoS for the month of January. It didn't work for me at all. Some S days were good and some were not. Last chance eating permeated my mind more than I would've liked it to. Better eat all those yummies before Monday! I gained about 5 pounds! I know that NoS veterans recommend much longer trial period. Last week I decided to go back to the mod that worked so beautifully before. Fat is coming off once again! I love it! I have peace with food once again + results! I I encourage you to check out Life's postings!

I want to add that eventhough I am almost at my goal at this point of my journey I was in the obese and then overweight category most of my adult life. I sympathize with you.

Thank you both, Apprentice and Oolala! The support on this board is fantastic.

I am going to stick with vanilla for now. Part of my motivation for getting on No S was having pre-diabetic numbers at my last physical. I had a normal A1c test, so normal blood sugars, last week, for which I am very grateful. I don't want to have to cope with diabetes, so I think it behooves me to keep my sugar consumption low.

I have about another 10 lbs to lose to get to healthy BMI. I am in the overweight BMI category right now.

Hi Jen --
Have you been doing NoS since Sept? Your weight loss seems really nice over that time period. Slow and steady seems to be the only kind of winning that happens in the weight loss race (for better and worse.....).
Hope that you have a great week!
Auto

PS I posted and clicked away and then just had to come back. From my outsiders' quick glance -- NoS is working beautifully for you! Look how you've brought your BMI down so far! And without mods? And your A1C values are looking good/better? I think sometimes I have not realized until months/years later that I was in a pretty good spot body-wise. It seems like you might be in one of those spots right now.

Have you been doing NoS since Sept? Your weight loss seems really nice over that time period. Slow and steady seems to be the only kind of winning that happens in the weight loss race (for better and worse.....).
Hope that you have a great week!

Thank you, Automated! Yep, I started in late September, and I have had slow, steady progress. I am grateful for the simplicity of the habits.

Apprentice, I just want to acknowledge your success being almost at goal after having been overweight/obese for such a long time. Me, too. I was okay in my teens (and didn't know it). The body really likes to hang on to long-established weight. You are beating the odds! Maintaining a 5-10% loss is beating the odds. Even those who pretty much maintain as they age (until they reach their senior years) are beating odds!

Oolala, thank you for your kind words! My goal is to model moderation to my four children. I also want to be an encouraging friend who gets how hard it is to lose fat and MAINTAIN.

173.5 again today. I went to bed really early last night, which I think was a good decision. I was exhausted.

I am here to report that even following No S, you cannot eat fried foods for several meals in the week and lose weight that week. In case you weren't sure.

Jen, you absolutely can lose weight eating fried foods if you keep portions moderate. I am a living proof. I wrote a couple of posts in a daily check in under " the trap of stomach growl diet" thread.

Joking aside, I am trying to use the system to figure out what is going on. I have had weigh-ins of 175, 176, and 177 in recent days. I've had two "fail days" already in Feb, and the meals on the "success" days have not been great. I've had fried and heavy foods a lot last week:
  • Fried Pork chops
    French fries
    Fried pickles
    Pizza
I also have not been exercising, which I'm sure doesn't help. I will work to get 5 greens this week, and I am going to allow myself the apple in between, as I had been doing. And I am going to work a few long walks in. Hoping that with this simple return to form, I will get back on track.

Breakfast today: leftover chicken soup, clementine, coffee.
