Tessa’s 2019 check in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Tessa’s 2019 check in

Post by eschano » Thu Jan 10, 2019 11:58 am

Hello!
So 2018 kind of ended a bit mixed. My 2 year old was hospitalised with bronchiolitis and specifically very low oxygen levels for 4 days and nights coming out just at Christmas Eve and we then had a stomach bug from hospital after. It made for a very grateful Christmas that we came out. Also, we have since massively re-evaluated our priorities and I will be using my phone a lot less making this more of a weekly check in.
Since 1st January we’ve been doing one month of no sweets whatsoever and it is going well. I’ve managed to do this within NoS only adding no sweets to the S days but only for this month. I feel extremely good about it and my body is thanking me for it. I had 3 days of sugar withdrawals after eating too much over the holidays and in hospital but since I’m doing fine. Although I do have the flu currently so have been eating plain nachos only yesterday.

Auto, yes like you we’ve been binge watching Marie kondo too and have tackled the toys and komono so far. Clothes this weekend. It’s such a lovely way of thinking of things.
Hope you are all doing well and to a happy and healthy new year!

Wow, that was a lot to deal with! Glad it's over and your little one is recovered.

After nine years, I, too, am experimenting with no sugar for the month after a brunch on NYD. I've been having some pain in my joints. I have no idea if this will actually make a difference but it's as far as I'm willing to go at this point.

Good luck with No Sugar! I did that last year Jan - March (literally no sugar, not even sugar in ketchup), if I remember correctly. I really enjoyed it, and it eventually led to more clear-cut and purposeful food choices. It was a great way to start the year.

I’m with oolala, just doing no sweets as no sugar might be too much effort ha!
I will follow your thread as much as I can as interested how you do it.
Auto, so far the no sweets is going really well so I might also expand it and continue it until Easter but not sure yet as it might be too restrictive.

We are all down with the flu now. DD1 started nursery earlier in the academic year and we are getting hit with one thing after the other. But NoS is going well.

We're exactly in the same place, it seems - N is sick every two weeks, and brings us all kinds of germs from daycare. Exhausting time. Wishing you lots of energy! It's inspiring to hear that you stay on track despite the challenges.

Oh Imogen, it’s tough going isn’t it? Definitely not something I ever thought about when I saw other people raising kids - my siblings made it look so easy!
Thank you J!

Diet wise it is going well! Kindness wise too but within limits of recovering from the flu. Movement wise I had to rebook my yoga course to next month.

Oh, I hope you get to do your Yoga class, Tess! I am doing a yoga class for 6 weeks at work - part of the "wellness challenge" they do every January.

Hi Eschano! (I guess I still sort of like to call you that!)
Just missing you a bit today - I'm loving the upgrade that Reinhard did for us.
Hope you are still on track for your Yoga class this month.

Auto, I’m doing really well! I had the flu and a bug and moved my yoga course to one starting on Tuesday but I’m excited and also, I managed to change my tastebuds. I didn’t have any sweets in January, had a treat on the 2nd of February and will continue my no sweets thing as I am loving it. I feel much better, have more energy, am less lethargic. I do have dates with almond butter or homemade hot chocolate on S days and feel completely satisfied with them. I will move towards a vanilla no-S system again in March most likely but it’s done me worlds of good.

I’ve also been on a phone detox hence I’ve been so quiet and it’s made me a much better parent as I was overly attached to my phone really.

Enjoying the upgrade as well!

Tried to catch up on some threads but only managed three and missing out one some of my favourite people here but I’m so tired I have to go sleep now.
My intentions for the coming weeks are to tighten up N days and keep my home-made S day treats without refined sugar as that is what definitely works for me for now.

Good for you for cutting back on your phone. Ive been trying to cut back on my tv watching and it really helps with my productivity.

I know youve got your hands full so appreciate you stopping by my thread! Hope you get some sleep!
