Great idea. Good luck! I wonder if I should move the nosdiet checkin and 21 day club to the everyday systems section, so it makes more sense for people to track other habits there. I think it should be technically straightforward... It would be nice to have one place to check in, especially if you're doing several systems. Some people (like me) have been doing that already in the nos checkin forum, but it would be more logical to stick the forum in the more encompassing group.

Feel free to restart this over there, it makes no difference to me personally.. I just felt like isolating this goal for myself, but yeah, perhaps a good plan!

Yesterday was a success, but today was a failure with UR..
Starting my count over tomorrow!

Thanks Reinhard again for the support, as usual!!! :D

Hello friends!
Today was Day 2 and a Success!

This is my plan about S days for the 21 day habit for UR...
I like the idea of it being in synch with the NoS days off, however I will view them as "optional" days off, and if I actually do walk for 20 to 30 minutes, they become part of the 21 days..
In other words, I'm not counting the days I don't walk, but I will take advantage of having them as "free days" that could go either way without throwing off my count.. Hmmmm...
That probably made no sense! LOL...

Did it make sense???

However, I am expecting to walk every N day, and if I take a day off there, if it's not for a sick day, I'll have to restart..

I gotta say, I'm feeling pretty motivated here!
And the weather is helping too, because it's so comfortable now!
It's certainly creating a happy cycle here!
I feel nice when I go do this! Get ready for a little laugh.... I even hugged a tree at one point of my walk, I was feeling so good! LOL

Have a nice weekend all!
Peace and Love and Hitting the Pavement!

Hi friends! :)
I didn't do any walking over the weekend..

I just finished my walk and I'm happy to say that it was much easier today! I was able to walk about thirty percent longer and my legs were much less stiff.. I'm also happy that I didn't use my oncoming period as an excuse to skip out... This 21 day thing really is a great external structure for me!

Cool!!!
Day 3 Success!!!

Day 4, Success!!!

I also feel happy to report that I didn't let the rain today, stop me from doing my walk! I just took my umbrella and got my toes a little wet!
I was wearing sandals...

Does this earn me extra kudos????
I say yes!!!

I didn't do the third time around that park this time, because after being out there in the wet coolness, my legs started saying it was time to come back into my dry cottage, so I listened..

Thanks again Reinhard, for your continued support!
I can see why Urban Ranger is up on your preferred list of systems!
It is really enjoyable! Even in the rain!

Have a great day all!

Day 6 Success!!!!!

I was lucky tonight because it was very beautiful out for a walk and I had my Son Richard with me!
We walked for almost forty minutes!
Felt really good! I'm not breaking into any major sweats or anything, and in fact I'm not going fast at all, but I don't care.. That will change over time naturally.. Kinda like the "overloaded plate" analogy/metaphor here.. (is that a metaphor??? LOL) because as long as I work on the main habit, walking every N day, I know the rest will just fall into place over time and I don't want to make this harder or hurt myself and give myself an excuse to then skip out on it for months at a time..
I'm shocked though still because, as nice as walking feels, I still needed to "con" myself into getting started!
Wow.. The sloth and inactivity habit could take ages to break.
What's really nice is that I am totally enjoying pleasure walking, even though I need this structure to get myself out the door, once out, I haven't got one single complaint (except hearing myself saying "What's wrong with me that I don't think to do this *automatically*???" LOL..)

Have a nice night!
Peace and Love,

Who says Urban Ranger is boring???
I almost got killed today while doing it!

I decided to go walk with Richard from school to my Mothers house, and drop him off there and then walk back to my cottage..
Well there was a lot of wind and a huge tree, an oak or maple, came crashing down into the street while I was passing by the house it fell on!
There was a lot of rain in the streets and I knew to move like mad as the tree would knock down all the power lines and I might get electrocuted..
I don't usually Urban Ranger that fast, but for a few seconds, I was up there with Carl Lewis..
All the power in our neighborhood went down for several hours and I was right there to see which tree caused it!
Phew!
I'm okay now, but my adrenaline was off the charts before!!!

Needless to say, I am cutting myself a little slack today in the diet arena because once I got safe and sound again, I figured that if a tree couldn't kill me, then a few scoops of ice cream and potato chips would be okay for a change.. It kinda became an unplanned "Special" Day...

Note to self:
No matter how envigorating it may seem to walk amongt the trees during forty mile an hour winds, no more Urban Rangering during windstorms for the future!

Wow.. What an experience!!!

Glad to still be here (and alive!)and posting that it's
Day 7 Success!!!!

I might see you here this weekend but if not, have a great one all!

Congratulations on surviving and racking up 9 days in a row! Wow, close call! And from nature, no less! My close calls have all involved being lost in thought and almost run over.

Thanks Reinhard! The tree is still there on the sidewalk as I'm sure it's gonna be expensive and time consuming to cut it into pieces and cart it away...
Heh.. lost in thought and being run down by a car is the exact opposite of what happens to me on a walk! I'm totally conscious (almost too much!) of my surroundings.. That day, my awareness was super heightened because I knew it was pretty dangereous (and sorta dumb!) to be walking in a major windstorm..
Suffice it to say, if I hadn't been that vigilant, I might not be posting here now..
As of today, I'm not walking in windstorms anymore and they will be officially considered "S" for storm days!
Heh heh..

If possible, I'm also going to try to get myself to do UR earlier, simply because I will get more benefit from the sunshine and that should help with my serontonin levels too..
But the purely psychological part of this "keeping my promise" to myself is so helpful on its own!!!
Thanks again Rein for being such a great example and supportive leader here!
See you later..
Peace and Love,
8) Deb

ps.. Incidentally, what's your thinking, if you have a second to think about this, about doing 21 days, and including the S days.. So far, my plan is to make S days an optional day off, and only count the N days, and any "bonus" days I earn from S days I choose to walk, toward my 21 days.. So this way it's really going to be more like a full month of N days walking..
Did that make your brain hurt reading it???
It made mine hurt! LOL...
Later!

Congratulations on keeping up the streak! Neither nature nor (presumably) man-made upsettingness can hold you back.

As for how you count success days, I think all the options you're considering still provide a meaningful incentive, and that's all that really matters.

I like to count successes and exempt s days as part of a "days on habit" winning streak, for simplicity, attainability and to make me really feel no pressure on s days. But your suggestion of making s days "no fail, but not automatically successful" makes a lot of sense, too.

Hahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You know me so well Reinhard!!!!!!
That had me laughing so loudly now!!!!
Thanks!

As it stands, S days are days off, but if I walk on a weekend day, it counts toward the 21 days.

Have a great weekend and thanks for the laugh!

Hi guys :)
I had to take an unplanned S day for this because Richie had a pretty bad sinus/cold blech thingy, and stayed home from school..
I really missed my walk today, but will resume tomorrow..
I'm not counting this as a failure.. I just couldn't leave him alone.

Have a nice night!

Thanks again Reinhard! He's getting better now..
I actually did my walking today, as we trick or treated :)
Funny how candy makes sinus infections kind of fade into the background in a kids mind!
We both enjoyed our S's and some!
And it was great out tonight and very comfortable for that stroll!
Seeya tomorrow!

Hi all!
I didn't walk today and there's absolutely no excuse.. Was just one of those days that I was procrastinating and by the time I remembered that I hadn't walked, it was dark and I didn't want to leave Richie at home alone..
But I walked yesterday, and so I'm giving myself a break for today since yesterday was Halloween! LOL (hear the bs machine in gear!)
No seriously..
Today was a failure for UR, but I'm still keeping my count at 13 and just starting over tomorrow :)
I think it's supposed to rain or something, so that will be "punishment" enough when I find myself walking in it!
See you then!

Hi guys! Yesterday I put off leaving the house for way too long and was looking for work all day.. Stress!!!!!

Today I started again and fortunately since Richie was home for Election day I just took him with me to a nice local park, where he played football with some kids and I just walked in circles for twenty minutes around the park, and ended up sitting under a large old tree in meditation for about 15 minutes or so..

So I'm off again :)

Day 1 Success!!!

I have decided to do the 21 days on habit, ala NoS style, which will include the days off on the weekends.. This might seem strange, but I'd say that three N weeks of walking is a pretty good goal to hit!
Perhaps more attainable and realistic?
Have a lovely week all!

Thanks a lot Rein!

Well I didn't post last week because we've had quite a family crisis and frankly, for most of the week, I was a total mess.. My Dad had to be admitted into the hospital for the second time this year, this week, and when I came to accompany him, it was beyond upsetting..
Anyway.. I'd rather not go into details..

I did go walking two days though, so it wasn't a complete failure.

I'll restart tomorrow :)
Enjoy the day all!

I think I've hit the 21 day mark this year. I haven't used the elevator, or public transit, or a cab, since the new semester started - except for things like job interviews and dress-up occasions (I don't want to climb stairs in high heels - that can't possibly be good for you).

I've got a financial incentive, too; every time I want to take a cab or a bus but resist temptation, I write down the money I've saved. I'm hoping to save enough to enable me to go to a ragtime festival in June without feeling guilty about all the money I'm spending.

Congratulations! That is hard core.

My 2 year old daughter, unfortunately, adores escalators, so I haven't been quite as pure. But I'm still walking to the 7th floor at work twice a day (until we move).

21 day Urban Ranger Club

Post by mrsj » Mon Dec 14, 2009 7:14 am

Debs, this thread needs to be revived! So-
I'm in!!!
Day 1: Urban ranging to town. Range this morning with doggie Thor. Range home the groceries from local shops. Range with Thor again at 1530.
Same rules as for the wannabe club?

Day 2: A long urban range with Thor. Then I will "home range" in the house. "Home Ranging" being cleaning house and trotting between the areas to be cleaned.

Come on folks!!! Am I the only one here?

I have looked at the calendar, and I have ranged every day for 21 days in spite of my shinsplints! So, today is really day 21! I will delet my other log-ins and start day 1 tomorrow, as I want to be a repeater. It appears that I will be the only active member of this club, but I don't care. It keeps me going.

HAPPY URBAN RANGERING!!!

Dec. 17: Day 1: urban ranged with Thor in snow storm. It was fun!
Dec 18: Day 2: Ranged with Thor. "Home" ranged.
Dec 19&20: S Days, but ranged anyway.
Dec 21: Range with Thor in snow. Serious home ranging today.
Dec 22: Ranged with Thor. Home Ranged. Bought myself a pedometer. Yikes! Only 2380 steps! Well, I have to start somewhere. I'm still taking it slow, because I've finally gotten rid of my shin splints and don't want them back. Today DH&I have to shop the last things for Xmas, so I'm hoping to log in a lot more steps.
Dec 23: Ranged to town and all over town for last minute Xmas things. Pedometer showed over 7000 steps. Tired, but no pain.
Dec 24: My pedometer broke! Cheap garbage! Home ranged all day.
Dec 25: Was in kitchen all day. Lots of steps.
Dec 26: Ranged to visit friends. This is day 15.
Dec 27: Ranged to visit friends again.
Dec 28: Ranged home the groceries.
Dec 29: Home ranged. Just tidying up, logged on over 3000 steps. pedometer fixed.
Dec 30: ranged to town to shop. Bought new pedometer. A reliable one!
Dec 31: ranged home the groceries locally. Then ranged to town just for the fun of it! 7400 steps on my new pedometer! Day 15.
Jan 1: S day. Ranged some. Day 16
Jan 2: S day. Day 17
Jan 3: Dozed all day due to a cold. a sick day. Day 18.
Jan 4: Ranged with Thor. DH is back to work after Xmas vacation. When DH is home in the mornings, he wants to range with Thor. It's a guy thing. I'm starting to train Frigga to wear a harness and lead so I can range with her too. Frigga is a Norwegian Forest Cat. DH refuses to walk with a cat. NOT A GUY THING! 3501 steps on pedometer.
Jan 5: Ranged with Thor. Ranged home the groceries. Twice. 6064 steps.
Day 20.
Jan 6: DAY 21!!! Will range with Thor and play in the snow with him. Have to range home some groceries so we can have dinner tonight. I'll post tomorrow about how many steps on the pedometer.
I DID IT!!! 3941 steps. Not much, but most of these steps were in terrain slugging through snow. Compare this to walking through loose sand on the beach. Much more work than pavement!

New 21 Day Cycle For ME!!!
Day 1, Jan 7: Range with Thor this morning. Home range.
Day 2, Jan 8: Ranged with Thor. Ranged home the groceries. Home ranged a little. 4985 steps on pedometer. It's improving! No pain!
Day 3, Jan 9: Ranged with DH to do a little shopping. An S day. 3502 steps.
Day 4, Jan 10: Ranged home some groceries. Ranged to visit friends.
4553 steps. My goal is to in the coming week to increase my steps to at least 4000 every day. I want to increase 500 steps every week until I reach 10,000 steps a day.
Day 5, Jan 11: Ranged with Thor. Ranged home the groceries. Ranged some indoors. 4073 steps.
Day 6, Jan 12: Ranged with Thor in the morning. Then ranged into town and did some shopping and window shopping. DH injured himself at work and is now home for 8 days. 8868 steps. Too much. I was exhasusted the rest of the day.
Day 7, Jan 13: Ranged into town AGAIN. 7068 steps. Totally exhausted.
Day 8, Jan 14: Home ranged all day. Only 2793 steps, but really used my upper body.
Day 9, Jan 15: Home Ranged. DH is home and that gives a lot of Home Ranging! Only 2671 steps, but used my arms a lot. Unfortunately, washing doors, coutertops and doing dishes doesn't register on a pedometer. Neither does cleaning out closets or kitchen cabinets!
Days 10&11, Jan 16&17: S days. Ranged some, but didn't wear pedometer.
Day 12&13: Jan 18&19: Home ranged. Ranged home the groceries. DH still home, so not Rangeing with Thor. GAAAAH!
Day 14: Jan 20: Ranged with Thor in morning. DH was at doctor's to get stitches out. Yay! Home ranged and ranged home the groceries. 5051 steps. IT'S LONELÆY HERE!
Day 15: Jan 21: Ranged home the groceries. Home ranged. Urban ranged just to get some fresh air.3008 steps.
Day 16: Jan 22: Ranged all over the place just looking. Bought Frigga a harness and lead. 4094 steps.
Days 17&18: Jan 23&24: S days. Ranged with DH to visit friens and did some shopping both days.
Day 19, Jan 25: DH is back at work, so ranged with Thor this morning. It was fun. Home ranged as the house was a disaster area after the weekend. When I home range I clip my pedometer to the sleeve of my T shirt. Most of home rangeing is upper body work. 5550 on pedometer and still counting.
Day 20, Jan 26: Over 5000 steps with ranging with Thor, home ranging and ranging home the groceries.
Day 21!!!!!! Jan 27: A little over 6000 steps. All my usual ranging, just a little further and longer.

I did it again! Yay!
¨
I have a question, though. Is it o.k. to post daily results here as I've been doing? It's not as if this thread is exactly overrun.

IT'S LONELY HERE!!!

Day 1, Jan 31: Yellow day, but I still tromped 4463 steps today. Pretty good considering that I slogged through 15 centimeters of snow. Real hard going. And, I'm pretty beat today because I was at a party yesterday and things got a little wet...
Day 2, Feb 1: Over 8200 steps and I'm exhausted and a little sore in the lower legs. I ranged to town and walked all over town. To get to town I had to shlog through a lot of snow so it was hard going. My pedometer says that over 3400 of these steps were aerobic.
Day 3, Feb 2: Ranged home groceries before snowstorm hit. Home ranged during snowstorm. DH built me shelves in the library for all the DVDs. Moved all the DVDs from 4 1 meter tall stacks on floor of living room and put in alphabetical order on my new shelves. A lot of walking and moving. Used a laundry basket. 5200 steps.
Day 4, Feb 3: Ranged home the groceries. Home ranged. 5123 steps.
Day 5, Feb 4: Home Ranged and ranged outside some. 5525 steps.
Day 6, Feb 5: A normal day, but I forgot my pedometer. Green.
Day 7, Feb 6: An S day, but ranged home the groceries, did laundry and ranged with Thor.
Day 8, Feb 7: S day. Range a little bit, but resting today. Tomorrow, 6000 steps on pedometer.
Day 9, Feb 8: Ranged with Thor. Home ranged. Ranged home groceries. 6000 steps. I did it! It's hard, can't range very far outside as everything is so icy.
Day 10. Feb 9: The usual rangeing and movement with purpose. 6125 steps.

I haven't bothered posting for a while, but I have ranged every day, even on S days. So, I know that I've completed 21 days and am well on my way to another 21 days. Apparantly everyone is too busy ranging to post about it. That's fantastic, I wish it were me! I'm doing everything I can to get up to 10,000 steps a day. Is it cheating if I clip my pedometer to my upper arm on the days I home range? My arms are moving as I rub and scrub, but my feet are still.

Don't feel alone mrsj! Although I just discovered this thread - can you believe that - I would have been able to join the 21 day ranger club many times in the past.
However, this past Saturday was the first time in almost 6 months that I was able to go outside and walk again (badly broken ankle last September). I walked until it hurt and that was after 15 minutes - BUT I was ecstatic over that!
Today I did it again - another 15 minutes! As soon as the times changes next week I'll be walking more, although I can't do consecutive days probably until school is out! Happy rangering

Thanks, Mimi! Congrats on your starting up again. Take it easy though.

I've been so alone on this thread that my last 2 posts in my check-in are in Danish, and NOBODY NOTICED!!! I expected a comment from Rienhard that posts should be in English.

Happy rangering and happy shrinking.

hey, I'm noticing the Danish! I'm lurking because I haven't been willing to commit. Now that Daylight Savings time is starting in the U.S., I may get inspired. However, I'm even more desirous of getting inspired to do Shovelglove or an equivalent. But good luck to all!
