"but what do you do if you get hungry?"

Post by Thisisnotabadidea- » Thu Feb 21, 2019 11:00 pm

Today I was with someone, We were getting ready to go somewhere after breakfast and wouldn't be back for another 6-7 hours. I just ate like normal for breakfast and figured I'd be fine(And I was). They started rooting around the kitchen and yelled "Don't you have snack food? Chips, Bars, SOMETHING?" to take with us and then I explained that no I don't snack or keep that kind of food around anymore and you'd have thought I had 3 heads. The response was "But what do you do if you get hungry?", And I was just like "Well if it's around mealtime then I eat if not It's not a big deal, Tea if I need it to get by will do. I'll just make a big meal when we get back 'kay?" and you'd have thought I'd summoned a demon by the mere mention of not eating every 3 hours! (Then they took the nuts i use for my oatmeal  )

Today I realized how people are so convinced they HAVE to snack they never even realize there's another option, At least here in America. Being hungry isn't the end of the world, I know that I can make it 6+ hour without anything and I bet almost anyone else would be okay with that too. It's a little insane how we've been conditioned to believe we need food 24/7 and to NEVER be hungry even for a minute. I'm on the other side looking at how I use to believe that and I see the error in that now, But you can't convince everyone I suppose

Learning to sit with hunger is a big part of making nos work in my opinion.

I introduce one mod early on that might seem like a contradiction but I determined no starvation. You know how sometimes you can be absolutely ravenous and need to eat but a meal might not be possible? On those circumstances I do have a small snack but they are rare occasions..

I can’t claim I can always easily go six hours, but I know I am usually going to be fine.

I think what is also interesting is that people are convinced they must pig out and inhale their food if they do get very hungry. True, it does seem natural but so is taking advantage of ava food. We learn to oppose that predilection. I think one of the reasons people don’t want to get too hungry is because they’re convinced they will overeat, and there is some evidence that they do, but that’s what getting used to moderate meals is about.

Anyway, an answer to the question of what if you get hungry is that I will then REALLY enjoy that next meal!

This has been one of the slower-to-learn lessons for me, but as I read your post, I realized that I am sort of healed in this regard. 5 years in coming.

NoS is powerful when we are not in a hurry to fix everything. It's so great for making observations about our motivations and our fears around food. Then we can just gather the information and make small modifications as we find something that works for us.

This is really something I've noticed too! It doesn't feel like anyone or anything is telling me what to do so I'm figuring it out myself. Like how I've adjusted my eating schedule to better fit after noticing an issue. And slowly changing portion sizes around.

My go to thing when hungry is one of my mods, usually a banana and herbal or mint tea. Occasionally an apple or orange if out of bananas, but apples typically trigger my stomach into thinking more food is on the way, so it's a last resort. An added mod, occasionally works better for me than full vanilla, which I also used for a long time. Mods have worked better for me since I'm retired than when I was still working.

I was definitely a victim of this American idea, that being hungry was the worst possible catastrophe. I remember when I was in labor, I forced myself to eat, because I had read somewhere how awful it was that they didn't feed you at the hospital until after the baby was born. My body knew what was what, though, and I promptly threw up the macaroni and cheese I'd just forced down. My body knew that I did not need food at that moment, but my brain was confused.

I also have had similar reactions to forcing myself to eat before workouts. People made me think I HAD TO eat before working out, and honestly, I don't. If I am running 5K or less first thing in the morning, better to have breakfast and coffee after my run. Yes, if I were training for a half marathon and planned a long run, I might have to eat first.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Brush my teeth, or chew sugarless gum. Drink a big glass of water. Drink coffee with cream.

When I was a little girl, I would ask my grandma for a carrot. I think it surprised her that I asked for carrots instead of cookies.

Also, most of the time, I'm not really hungry, I'm just bored. Sometimes I have to stop and ask myself if I'm really hungry, or if just want to do something with my hands.
