Jen's checkin thread

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

False alarm on the weight loss restarting. My weight bounced back up to 170 after that, then back to 169. Oh well. I forgot to weigh today or yesterday. I took a yellow day for Purim, for the hamentaschen (little triangular cookies that my MIL send to us).

I also had a red day yesterday.

170# today. I've had some 168 and 169 days in between but didn't come on here.

Red day yesterday. High stress time of year for me. Yesterday I cheated with dried mango as well as having warm haldi milk (sweetened, which is what makes it a cheat).

I also was borderline red on Monday. I made sangria, which was a bit sweet from orange/mango juice, and had two glasses.

I am doing okay today. Walked to work (2.5 miles with a detour). Breakfast: everything bagel and cream cheese. Lunch: turkey sandwich, carrot sticks, and apple slices from the cafeteria. Dinner tonight - ?

We've been eating vegetarian at home, mostly. My kid has stuck with it. Last night was typical: rice & black beans with cheddar cheese and tomatoes. Side of pea pod stems, and an apple for dessert. I also had beans for lunch yesterday, a pinto bean casserole with corn and a buttermilk cornbread topping.

Especially since having a daughter, I try to never talk in fatphobic ways about my body or anyone else's, but I failed at that this weekend. I was at a training event with all women, and I was talking about No S with a friend there who has been struggling with her eating. That's fine, but then she said her doctor has reassured her that she is healthy even though she's gained a lot of weight. I chimed in that my doctor had done the same, but "meanwhile, my doctor is fat!" I knew it was an f*ed-up thing to say as soon as it was out of my mouth. I was invalidating my doctor's knowledge based on her body, and saying something damaging to any woman listening. Instead, I could've just said I'm sure she is healthy, but her concerns about her rate of weight gain are ones I shared. I am just putting it here because I am trying to figure out how to turn off this nasty voice in my head and certainly not say something out loud, even if it's in my head. I sent an apology to the group afterward. I think that I will try for a while to be curious and mindful when I hear this voice in my head. If I can just learn to recognize, "that is fatphobic", and be curious about why, I think I will learn something.

That is a toughie because fat is such a loaded word. It could be an adjective. Or a medical condition. Or a risk factor. Or a devastating personal judgement. I wish we could take the emotion out of it, but that doesn't seem likely, does it? My daughter is very tall, 5'11". She is so tired of, "YOU'RE SO TALL!" She knows she's tall and that people marvel and have opinions (negative, apparently) about it. I'm trying to train myself not to comment on any aspect of someone's body habitus generally. But I do think it is helpful for people to hear from the ones like you who chose to address weight gain and succeeded. Not enough success stories out there.

My kid is tall, too, and she hates all the comments about it. She is taller than I am at age 14. Everyone's reasoning is, "But it's a compliment! I'd love to be tall!" I have learned that commenting on the body, even positive comments, are not very helpful to most of us. It is a hard habit to break.

We are back on meat! My kid wanted to try eating vegetarian for one month. When the month ended, she was ready to eat meat again. I am grilling lamb tonight. She ate brisket at Passover, too. :D It is a relief to me, because she doesn't really like a lot of carbs, so it was hard to put meals together. She's always been one to eat the meat and the veggies, and skip the rice/bread/potato. When she was little, I used to make her sandwiches, and she'd eat the filling but throw the bread in the compost.

I guess I've been on maintenance for about 6 months. I wish I'd continued to lose weight, but for now, maintenance is okay. I will see how things go after I get through my most busy months at work. Things ease up around June for me. I think once I can catch up on my sleep, my eating choices will be healthier.

I got a few nights of 9+ hours, and I finally feel "caught up" on my sleep deficit. Interestingly, one of those nights, I was camping, and not able to be on an iPad or phone.

Heartful post about reflecting on your comment about your overweight doctor. It's quite a societal habit.

I think fat is less of an issue than overeating is. Sounds paradoxical, but I honestly believe if someone studied it, they'd find those who eat less, no matter what their weight, stay healthier longer, and that those who tend to keep some weight on despite less eating are also healthier. Early humans who could keep fat on had to be at an advantage for survival. Yeah, not a medical opinion and certainly against the grain. But it helps keep me from resenting those ectomorphs who chow down...

I don't think we can really know what our healthiest weight is until we are ready to eat a mostly nutritious diet, but that can take a long time! And there will always be exceptions.

In the meantime, we keep working out our destiny in this food-rich world of ours!

171#

Thank you! I am making it through my busiest time of the year, one foot in front of the other. I have a big public speaking event next week, the second one this spring, which is a stress trigger for me. I also finished my overnight Ragnar relay (17 miles for me this time).

Today I am trying out having a salad for lunch. I thought I had settled on a default lunch (the power bowl), but I quickly 'forgot' about it. Meaning, I guess it was not appealing in the long run. I think that the best default lunch will be one that I enjoy, even if it is "dull", and one that is easy. I'm still looking for it. Maybe a yogurt thing could be my default. My kid's default is PB&J.

Breakfast:
Cracked oats with blueberries, some leftover salad. Coffee and milk

Lunch:
Salad with fresh mozzarella from supermarket, small roll, apple. Tea.

Dinner
Maybe chili. That would give me leftovers for lunch tomorrow for the me and the kid. I also could make pasta with marinara sauce.

Thank you, Auto! I am well and enjoying summer. My job slows down in the summer, and it gives me some time to try to catch up on sleep and make healthy choices.

175# again today. Red day yesterday (I bought and ate a caramel, just one though, and I also ate fruit between meals). I went running again today, 4 miles. Honestly, I am only at probably 30% green days right now.

Yesterday
Breakfast- plain yogurt, raisins, nuts, coffee and milk
Lunch - Hamburger and fries
Unauthorized snack - dried mango.
Dinner - 1 pc chicken thighs, corn, kale, nectarine.
Caramel.

Today -
Breakfast - raisin toast
Lunch & dinner, TBD.

177# frowny face!

I went for a run today, just 2 miles, with my friend. We are going out again on Wednesday. I ate a bunch of sugar this weekend - candy bar, ice cream, "snacks" of cereal.

Breakfast -
English muffin with peanut butter
Lunch - TBD
Dinner - chicken marbella - I made a pan of this dish for my friend who is ill, and I had enough extra to make some for my family, too. I use much less sugar than the Silver Palate calls for, just about 1/4 cup for 3 pans of chicken, instead of a cup of sugar. I will serve this with couscous. I associate chicken marbella with our work potlucks. My colleagues usually ask me to bring this to our holiday potluck.

Back from 10 days in Spain - a wonderful vacation. I need to remember to weigh myself tomorrow morning. Haven't got on the scale since before we left. I did not keep to No S while on vacation, but I always loosely used the framework, by sticking to 3 meals. I ate 3 meals, but had a starter or even a dessert when I felt like it. I also ate the chocolate that the hotel left us, and drank a lot of sweet Tinto de Verano (basically wine + sprite) and vermút con sifón.

I went running this morning, about 5k. I didn't run in Spain, but we walked a lot, 10,000-25,000 steps a day.

175.5 today.

Ran 3 miles and walked 2 with my friend. It's a beautiful day, not too hot for once.

Breakfast:
* Apple pie and skyr
* Coffee
Lunch:
* Bean chili and corn on the cob, skipped the butter
* Plum
Dinner: ? We are going to a play at a school at an awkward time, so I either need to eat really early or really late.

173.5 yesterday (forgot to weigh today)

I did a 20-min hand weight workout yesterday (a Youtube video), and today everything hurts. I ran 3.6 miles this morning with my friend and walked 1 mile. As I go through the day, I have felt more and more stiff.

Had a 177 weigh in yesterday, which felt crappy, but then was 175 today.

I have had a whole thing going on of rebelliousness within myself, so I have had almost zero green days. The violations are mostly small. I have started to justify a lot of virtual plating and caloric drinks, which is I suppose how I regained some of the weight I lost. Yesterday, for example, I drank an OJ and a smoothie between meals (justifying it because my lunch was a pbj sandwich with no side or drink) and ate dried mango and cherries after dinner.

Today, I am so far compliant. Aiming to get through the day green. NO VIRTUAL PLATING FOR ME right now. I am too prone to adding on big extras. I went running this morning - 3.5 miles, plus a 1/2 mile cool-down walk.

Breakfast - Greek yogurt with some granola and berries, coffee with milk
Lunch - Leftover chicken larb salad (Thai) and moong dal (Indian), with 1/2 Grapefruit. Technically the grapefruit was on the side, because I had the larb and dal in a bowl, but it would've all fit on one plate, and I ate it all at one go.
Dinner - I think it will be black bean tacos. I have everything to make them.

Feel peckish now but will save my appetite for dinner. I need to remember that that good appetite - not raging hunger but just good appetite - is how I got to a lower weight last summer.

When this website updated last year, I stopped using the habitcal, because it wasn't working for me. Maybe I'll go back and see if it's working now. This could be day zero of green. :)

Hang in there, Jen. Sometimes summer days are the toughest for me to avoid fun treats and drinks. Also - getting back into the routine with sitting with hunger for a bit is not easy! Even after we got good at it! I find that at about 3pm I am really wanting food. But then if I just wait until 4, all of sudden the remaining hour or two until dinner doesn't seem so long or hard to wait. It's kind of habit for me to want a milky coffee at about 3. LOL, HABIT! :-)

174.5 today. I decided to count yesterday as red because I had a sweet drink (sangria). I also did not stick to my meal plan. A friend invited me out last minute, and I could go, so I did. Dinner was: one cheesburger slider (small sandwich), fries, and green salad, with one glass of white wine. Then I had a campaign meeting and drank the sangria there.

I ran 5K this morning.

Breakfast - Greek yogurt, granola, berries
Lunch - Dal, bindhi masala (okra), rice, mango lassi, peach for dessert
Dinner - ?

Wednesday ended up being red. I ate the supermarket sushi, then went to visit a friend. She has invited me but never mentioned lunch. I arrived at 1:30 at her house. However, when a beautiful lunch of tomato soup and pasta salad was served, I just decided to eat it. The rest of the week was green. I had one short run on Friday morning.

Green today. Did a yoga video (Yoga with Adriene). Did not weigh myself. If I don't remember to do it first thing, I don't bother, because then I'll just wonder if it would've been different in the morning.

Breakfast - Leftover corn on the cob, leftover pork (abt 3 oz), brussel sprouts, strawberries, coffee

Lunch - leftover pasta and meatball, dried mango, peach, coffee

Dinner?? I am already hungry, and it's only 5:30. Might have some tea or go for a short walk. I've been hunched over spreadsheets for a while now.

173# today.

Last night's dinner was dumplings and pork with wood fungus and Chinese broccoli. I went for a 2 mile walk yesterday at the end of the day with my kid.

Today - went for a short walk for lunch and also walked for errands.
Breakfast - skyr, strawberries, granola
Lunch - Crispy eggplant sandwich with sweet pickles and spicy goat cheese, greens, and a cortado. This was from a cafe near me called Revival. It was delicious. I was going to get the fried chicken sandwich that they posted on Instagram, but it sold out. LOL. I was 100% happy with my substitute though. It rang all the fried food bells without being too oily.
Afternoon - iced coffee

I had my physical a couple of weeks ago. Although I have been irritated that I haven't maintained my lowest weight of 167, I have had great results on the thing that motivated me to start this diet: my glucose results. This is a relief, since my dad has type 2 diabetes, and at my highest weight, I was pre-diabetic.

GLUCOSE
Summer 2017 - 104 - uh-oh! Found and started No S diet as a result.
Summer 2018 - 90. Back in normal range after 11 months of No S. Great!
Summer 2019 - 65 - now in the low normal range. Perfect!

I ran 3.59 miles yesterday with my friend. Then, I walked a lot, so I got in 14,005 steps yesterday, and 15 floors of stairs. I was dead tired by 10 PM last night and went to bed early. Today, I am mostly sitting around working on a grantwriting project, so it's all balancing out.

Breakfast -
Coffee with coffee milk (sweetened, a bit of a cheat), pork and greens leftover from last night.
Lunch - Pasta with ragu sauce, watermelon, roasted kale

Dinner - Scallops, corn on cob, tomato salad, peach.

174# this morning

High stress day yesterday. I had two deadlines the same day (today), and despite planning to finish one last week, I didn't really buckle down and finish it until yesterday at noon. Why do I stress myself out like that?
This weekend, I was idly watching Aquaman, thinking, "This is the biggest waste of my time, but look how cute he is!"

Finishing project one at lunchtime yesterday left me just half of a work day (and the night, as it turned out) to finish project 2. I mostly stuck to meals but did eat an ice cream sandwich during the evening last night.

I woke in the night, stressed, and couldn't get back to sleep, so I gave in and came downstairs to write more on my proposal. I just submitted the second proposal, so I hope that I can get back to normal today and have a green day. I have a volunteer fair to attend this afternoon, so I will be busy, and in a way that doesn't easily allow snacking. :)

173.5 today

I am run down, so I told my running partner that I am taking a couple of days off. I thought I was getting a sore throat, but it may have just been from allergies and postnasal drip (yuck), because it feels a little better today. More dry than pain today. I was very tired yesterday, and I went to bed at 9 PM, so I got 9 hours of solid sleep.

Although I didn't exercise yesterday, I did walk 12,856 steps. Not bad! I ran on Labor Day, a short, fast-for-me run (2.2 miles). I have now had two runs that averaged 10:20 miles, and I had some splits of 9:53. That is back to my pace that I used to do when I was running much more regularly. The cooler weather helps a lot with picking up the pace.

Breakfast:
Skyr, blueberries, a bit of watermelon, a bit of chicken. Coffee x 2

Lunch:
I am going out to a pub to meet a board member. Maybe the BLT or the Cobb salad.

Dinner:
Maybe London broil from my farm share with kale and mac & cheese.

Your meals today sound yummy and nourishing. Hope they help get you feeling great again.

Nice work on all the exercise! But I know how your body can start to feel a little "overdone". It's so important to listen to that and rest, exactly as you did (sleep-wise and not running).

173# today

I didn't cook the London Broil. I forgot that it needs to marinate. So that will be tonight's dinner. We just ate the mac & cheese and some fruit for dinner. I was preoccupied with watching the climate forum with the Democratic candidates on CNN. I watched about 3 hours worth. So not a lot of cooking happened.

Today
breakfast: skyr, grapes, 2 oz spicy andouille sausage

Lunch: rice, plantains, chicken wings, veggies (hot bar, supermarket), o.j., tea

Dinner: London Broil, kale, onions, and tomato salad with a fresh peach for dessert

No exercise planned today except walking and stairs. Maybe I will motivate to do a 20-minute yoga video tonight.

173.5 today. Did not do the yoga video. Nighttime workouts - other than long walks - do not usually come true for me. I did do 11,970 steps yesterday, and 19 floors. I've been taking the T instead of driving, which has naturally bumped up my walking without it seeming like a big workout.

I did make the London broil. I overcooked it. Oh well. I was feeling hungry after dinner, so I had some warm milk with one sugar, and that was a perfect treat.

Today's breakfast was delicious. I should have taken a photo.
Breakfast: HB egg, andouille sausage, watermelon, cucumber, tea, then coffee.
Lunch: TBD
Dinner: TBD, maybe pizza. We are all tired after our first week of school.

Right?

173.5 today

I ran today, 3 miles, slow.

Breakfast
Skyr, granola, coffee
Lunch
Avocado salad - this was disappointing. It sounds weird to complain about this, because they are expensive, but there was so much avocado and so few black beans, the ratio seemed off. And there was very little seasoning and a weird cornflakey stuff (where I expected corn tortillas). Oh well. Iced tea.

Midafternoon - iced latte and a fancy oreo (little cookie sandwich from the local bakery)

Dinner - Pasta and veggies, wine
Dessert #2 - chocolate custard with almond. This was delicious!

175# today. I went for a run this morning, only 2.6 miles.

Breakfast
Blueberry pie, peach, sausage (2 oz), coffee

Lunch
Turkey and veggie chili, apple, coffee

Dinner
Maybe scallops if I can defrost them in time. With greens and rice.

The peaches from my farm share are so good right now! They are the type of peaches you can rarely get in the store, because they are so ripe and soft. On the other hand, I am eating the apple from my lunch right now, and it is disappointing. Mushy. I was hoping it would be a crisp new fall apple, but I bet it was last year's apple, stored. Like so:

174.5 today.

Yesterday was red. I did okay until I stayed up late watching election results. I was interested in the NC special election, but mainly, I was interested in the primaries/preliminaries that two of my friends were involved in at the city level. One of them is advancing to the general, and one got eliminated, but she ran a great campaign. Anyway, being up at midnight translated into eating a nighttime peach and then cocoa. And today, I am a bit sleep-deprived. Slept 5.5 hrs, when I like to sleep 7-8.

Breakfast
pan-roasted kale, HB egg, coffee with milk

Lunch
Hot bar from supermarket - rice, plantains, veggie mix, ribs, o.j.

afternoon (right now)- tea w milk

Dinner - Fish from the farm share arriving tonight, I think. Plus salad greens, cukes, onion, tomato and squash.

No exercise planned, but I should get to 8,000 steps just by virtue of my day and taking the subway. Monday, I ran in the morning (just 2+ miles) and then walked at night with my friend, plus took the subway, and I walked 17,746 steps. That's a lot for me.

whoop-woop on lots of steps!

The intensity of the political lifestyle must really take a toll on you and your friends. Please do continue to keep self-care in mind. I know you do your best already to balance self-care and everything else, but I just want to encourage you to continue to keep aiming for good sleep!!! -- so you can feel your best and do your most creative work!

Wow, you do a ton of walking. That has to be really good for you.

I'm politically active as well, though I've been taking a bit of a break lately. It does become necessary. Good on you for caring.

We didn't get the fish - they didn't have enough to distribute, so they gave me a credit on my farm share.

Last night, I cobbled together dinner with spinach ravioli, red sauce, and a little sausage, with new farm share (tart, delicious) apples for dessert. The red sauce was delicious. I made it from fresh Roma tomatoes that I'd roasted last week. But part of me felt that the effort did not equal the payoff. My family didn't notice anything different about the sauce versus jarred, until I pointed it out. Then they pretended it was better. However, I do think it had to have more vitamins or antioxidants or whatnot.

Today
Breakfast - leftover Greek salad, slice of polenta bread with butter, tea
Lunch - Maybe a sandwich - headed out to grab something now.
Dinner - ??? I am going to see Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor speak, so I will probably wait and eat after that. I will have a tea or milk before the talk to carry me through.

Thank goodness you got good apples this time!

I made spinach ravioli for Creator! :-) I get it at Costco. Definitely no homemade sauce though - I just dump olive oil and parmesan cheese on there. I'm sure your homemade sauce must have been delicious and healthy!

I haven't been running in days. The change in schedule with my kid in high school has been messing with my routine. I like to run in the morning, but I think to do that, I have to run at 5:30 AM. I have not accepted that reality yet. I did go for a bike ride on Sunday with lots of hills. No exercise on Saturday but I did do nearly 4 miles of walking at my state Democratic convention.

Breakfast today: polenta bread toast, watermelon, coffee
I stopped at Clover to buy iced coffee and didn't look at the price. It was $4! For just plain iced coffee, not a latte. Forget that.

Lunch:
From the cafeteria: broiled fish, broccoli, cauliflower, rice and corn, tea.

Dinner:
Scallops (finally remembered to defrost), corn on the cob, tomato salad.
S Day treat (boyfriend's bday): strawberries, cream, cake.

I have always been a strictly morning walker (and more recently, jogger), but something changed for me this summer. It was a combination of two things: 1) really really loving using my morning time for more journaling and thinking and researching; and 2) finding that for me, morning exercise RAISES my blood sugar and exercising after meals lowers it very very significantly. For the moment, those two things have helped me stick to after meal walk/jogs. We'll see how long I keep it up. Good luck finding your running groove with the new schedule.

Oh, and thanks for the lunch-making empathy over on my thread! I wanted to hug you through the computer, especially when I read about the "last of the pb incident". I totally get it!

“Dem Convention” made me smile. 💙💙💙

The only way I can walk my dogs is by getting up at 5:15am. It’s only happening about 2-3x/wk at this point. Anyway, hope you can find a routine that works for you.

176 this morning. I was 173.5 on Friday. Who knows?

Breakfast:
- A peach, watermelon, a bit of sausage, coffee w/ milk

Lunch
- Rice bowl with tomatoes, greens, cheese, beans, peppers (leftovers re-purposed)

Dinner
- ?? Maybe I'll make chicken thighs, kale, and corn on the cob. I'd need to buy the meat on the way home. I have the veggies.

Dinner was takeout, and not very healthy. Oh well. Today:
Breakfast: watermelon, blueberries, tiny scone, coffee w/ milk
Lunch: leftover pad thai with added veggies (arugula, peppers), peach, more blueberries
Dinner: pizza - we have a big training event tonight at work, and I will eat 1-2 slices of veggie pizza.

173.5 today. I went to hot yoga last night. I've been pretty anxious about a career transition, and I decided that I needed a good sweat. It was my first time taking this particular class - Hot Power Fusion - and I did find it challenging but also relaxing. No strength training, just balance and postures. My step count for September averages 9,301 steps.

Dinner last night was fish fried in the skillet, peppers and onions, an apple, and some dried mango and cheese.

Breakfast today: sausage (~2 oz), plum, apple, a lunchbox pepper, coffee w/ milk.

Lunch: Maybe sushi. It is so nice out. I'd like to have an excuse to walk a few blocks. I am doing a lot of writing today at work, which means a lot of sitting.

Dinner: I have an event, so maybe I will just eat there. Not sure if real food will be served.

What would real food be? Like enough for a relatively balanced dinner? Or just not chips and cookies?

Anything nonsweet I could make a plateful of, I suppose. This is a postcard-writing event at someone's house, a political gathering, and I'm not sure what to expect. I have hosted things like this, and I provide food for my friends, but I have also been to things like this where I am offered a glass of water and cookies.

I did have sushi for lunch, a special that came with a small salad and miso soup.

Jen - I've been sitting in the sauna for about 10 min after Creator and I finish swimming (well, he keeps swimming). Anyway, I've found the heat so soothing. My HR will go up to 130 sometimes! I try to be careful not to overdo it but I think I'm becoming convinced of the healing power of heat.

I love the heat of the sauna in the winter. I don't have access to one anymore, but I used to go to a fancy gym, and sometimes, that was the only thing that motivated me to go, the idea that I will be warm all the way through. Now I go to hot yoga for the same feeling. I have to take it slow because I have been known to pass out in extreme heat, though never at yoga so far.

173 yesterday, 173.5 today.

Dinner last night - scrambled eggs with a bunch of veggies, before my political event.

Breakfast today:
Apple, sausage, coffee

Lunch:
1/2 sweet potato sandwich, chips, and salad (Exec Director lunch, catered)
Cappuccino and clementine for "dessert"

Dinner
Another political thing, and there will be snacky stuff. Ends at 8, so I might just eat after it ends.

175 today

I ran a 5k race yesterday with my friend (34:32). Just over 11:00 minute miles.

Breakfast today: sausage, watermelon, coffee

Lunch today: Indian buffet, small cheats (small cup chai and small taste of raita)

Dinner: ? I roasted turkey thighs, potato, kale and brussel sprouts last night. My kid didn't like it. Still, maybe I will eat those leftovers, and make her some pasta or something.

I finished one big grant request today and have one tomorrow, so my patience is frayed. My people annoyed me last night by mutinying about eating leftovers. We ate a combo of leftovers plus pasta last night, with the only person eating turkey being me, and my boyfriend made himself a sandwich, too. I guess I will remember not to make roast turkey again. There is still more left for me to eat.

It irks me when I make a dinner and my bf makes a sandwich, but I try to let it go. No one should be forced to eat food they don't like, in my opinion, which I guess means sometimes the cook is disappointed.

He was trying to get me to coach him on how to make an alternative dinner, and I was not obliging. He is a wonderful man who cannot make the simplest food. He wanted to know how to bake a potato. I rolled my eyes hard and told him to google it, hence the sandwich.

Lol on the baked potato thing! 😁 And I totally relate with the frustrations of cooking for others. My husband & youngest pretty much love everything I cook but my oldest will often heat something from the freezer in lieu of my cooking. It gets annoying but I let it go. I figure she’s trying to assert her independence.

Because of our exchange on the baked potato, I actually googled "best baked potato recipe", and a very popular one bakes for 2 hours! I always thought one hour was the way to go.

I am so tired today. I really believe it was Friday, and then my kid corrected me this morning. UGGGGH

We did have bean burritos yesterday. Haven't weighed myself in a few days. Will try to remember tomorrow AM. Yesterday was red - I nibbled on random stuff last night and had a bowl of cereal after dinner. I should not keep cereal in the house.

Breakfast - leftover egg scramble from yesterday, raisin bun (not sweet), coffee
Lunch - Maybe Indian food
Dinner - ??

Still really tired today despite 8 hours of sleep. ?

Ran a 5K this Sunday, and was proud that I managed 10:45 mile splits on a hilly course. This is slow for most people, but on the faster end for me lately.

Again forgot to weigh. Mornings have been dark and early, and I keep tumbling out of bed and getting distracted, having coffee, etc, rather than remembering to weigh in.

Weekend treats seemed reasonable and delicious. I was introduced to Anzac cookies at a wedding on Saturday. They are so good! Not sure if the bride or groom had a connection to that part of the world, or just liked them. Last night, I made popovers as the starch with dinner, and we ate them with jam. It was cold enough that I didn't mind turning on the oven.

Breakfast - watermelon, sausage, coffee w/ milk
Lunch - Hot bar from supermarket (heavy, $11 worth), apple, latte
Dinner - Maybe lentil soup? I have leeks and lentils, fresh cheese and cherry tomatoes, so I am tempted to make soup.

175.5 this morning.

I hiked Mt. Willard yesterday with my friends and our kids. We had the day off from school for the Jewish high holidays. It was peak foliage, really beautiful. My friend has a farmhouse in NH that seems like paradise to visit - mini horses, cute barn kitties, a donkey and horse that consider themselves a herd. I don't think it would be paradise to actually live there. The neighbors are erratic gun nuts with a history of domestic violence, but one works in town hall. Eek. Another neighbor down the road also tried to kill his wife. All in the most bucolic, put-it-on-a-calendar setting.

Today weight 175.5.
I want to get back into checking in here, as I try to get more regular about keeping to my habits. Wow, I've really been off this board for some months. I am semi-active in the Facebook group, mostly posting pictures of my meals. I have been up and down a bit in my weight. Still down from my highest non-pregnant weight (189), but up from my low of 167. I'd like to reset and maybe tick back down a few pounds. I have been pretty inactive during quarantine/isolation/whatever we call this messed-up pandemic life. I did complete one 30-day yoga with Adriene series, and it only took me about 50 days. I have not been running because I have a hip bursitis thing happening. I was supposed to start PT when the stay-at-home orders came out. At least I made it through the diagnosis and know it's not serious. I used to walk so much for commuting and errands, but lately I've had many days under 500 steps. Not good.

My work life has changed. I took a new job that is 25 hrs/week, and in my extra time, I am running for political office. I had expected to walk thousands of steps, and I did at first, but since March 11, I have not campaigned out of my house. We are running a virtual campaign, which sucks as a challenger. But I did qualify for the ballot and have some good endorsements.

Today (fridge cleanout of veggies from last week's farmshare)
Breakfast - one poached egg, tomato, greens, orange, coffee
Lunch - 2 pieces of onion and mushroom pizza, bok choy with ginger and garlic, carrot, iced coffee
Dinner - last day of school - celebratory sushi takeout?

Exercise - going to do a 30 minute yoga video and take a short walk with my kid if I can convince her.

I did complete the Yoga with Adriene video - True #2.

I want to take a moment and record some of the sensations I've been having in my body. The bursitis is in the right hip. At its worst, it involved shooting pains in the leg and back and spasms in the butt. Now it is more of a little ache. It is worse after I have a day without activity and better after yoga.

Also, for the first time, I've experienced cracking noises and sensations in my back. I think that is also tied to the inactivity.

On the good side, the yoga over the quarantine has fired up my abs. I can finally feel what is supposed to happen in plank, where my front body lifts up to the back and wraps around me tightly as though those muscles are a sling lifting my up. I have a full six-pack buried under a layer of fat. A secret one, just for me. I also feel strong in the standing postures and approach them differently than I did when I was younger. My breathing is easier in all the poses.

174# today

An inauspicious beginning to my return to the board. I forgot that I had planned an S day yesterday. It was the last day of (online) school for my kid, and I had ordered some ice cream treats. So, yellow yesterday.

We had celebratory takeout for dinner last night. I got sashimi and had an ice cream treat.

Today
Breakfast: plain croissant, coffee
Lunch: Corn chowder, green salad, sprouternickel.
Dinner: Maybe pork cutlets? I got my farm share yesterday, including some meat.

Hi Jen!

Congrats on all of your new endeavors - different job that gives you time for your political aspirations, and the yoga, and the "noticing" the sensations in your body.

You sound really good, despite the craziness of life. So glad to see you on the boards!

175.5 today. RED day yesterday.

I was doing great until after dinner. I ate two handfuls of chocolate covered almonds. I find that when I spend a few hours on zoom phone banking (for the campaign), I am antsy and looking for snacks or treats. I need to figure out a better wind-down to chill me out after zooms and calls. I also should record that possibly, the fact that I had some wine with dinner probably made me more open to cheating.

We ended up having steak instead of pork with dinner: Steak, rice, spinach, wine.

TODAY
Breakfast - 1/2 pastry, bit of Greek yogurt, coffee (so red already, but I am trying to correct instead of just wallowing in the error)
Lunch - fish, sprouternickel and cheese, green salad
Dinner - Takeout? I have another zoom/calls tonight

Exercise today: Yoga with Adriene, True #3, done.

175# today

Last night, we got takeout from one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. They are slightly fancy, not Tex-Mex. I had a delicious chicken with peppers thing called Pechugas en Salsa de Chile Poblano. Sometimes I get the sangria, too, which is available for takeout due to the pandemic. But it is sweet, so I skipped it, and I didn't miss it. We walked to get the food, about 5,000 steps, so at least I got my blood moving.

I am also trying to drink more water instead of endless milky coffee/tea. I do not subscribe to the idea that we need to drink quarts of water to be healthy, but I do think that adding in a few extra glasses of water behooves me and keeps me from fake hunger.

Breakfast today: coffee, two slices of raisin walnut bread, a bit of Greek yogurt.
Lunch: maybe the pork. I got these cutlets which I am not really sure how to cook. Will google recipes now. I have bok choy to cook, too, to go with it.
Dinner: ??? Probably takeout or something from the freezers. I have a zoom until 5:30 today.

Haha! Me too! I think I gained 5 pounds during the pandemic from creamy coffee!

Your Mexican meal sounds great. I have to say being able to get booze delivered is pretty fun! ☺️

Im trying to drink more water too but as my husband always says “there’s plenty of water in coffee and beer!” 😁

Still 175 today. Yesterday was my first green day in a while. So that's exciting. I had a little urge to go find another snack at 10 PM, but instead, I went to bed, and I am proud of myself for that.

Today, I hope to do some yoga, and get a walk in. I have a couple of work zooms and some writing and web site work to do, which means a lot of sitting on my butt. I need to make the effort to stretch and move.

I thought my hip would get better on its own, and while the pain has lessened considerably, it still does not feel normal. I think I will reschedule the PT that was canceled due to COVID, now that medical offices are re-opening.

174.5 today. Yesterday was green.

I did not do the yoga yesterday, but I did walk a bit (about 4,500 steps).

Yesterday lunch: beef and black bean chili with cucumbers and watermelon on the side
Yesterday dinner: more chili with bok choy and broccoli on the side.

Today I think I will roast a chicken before it gets too hot, for dinner tonight and lunch tomorrow. I spatchcock it and use the spine to make chicken broth (sorry, that is gross if you are a vegetarian). One of my goals is to waste less food, and I always feel good making my own stock with the ends of the vegetables and the yucky bits of the bird. It sounds icky, but it is in fact the traditional way to make broth, in fact the reason we have soup, I'm convinced: to use up the leftovers and get all the nutrition from the food we have.

Breakfast? Maybe skyr and granola. I am having coffee right now and don't feel too hungry.

Oh, and I feel I should record that the reason Monday was a red day was that I had a difficult night meeting/zoom, which I knew would be rough, where a group voted to endorse my opponent, but I had to show up and smile. I got through it but then had popcorn and watched an episode of Schitt's Creek with my kid to shake it off. It would've been just as effective to take a walk with her to shake it off.

It was really good, auto. I have a jar of pesto in the fridge right now, so it's easy to add a little dollop.

174# today.
Dinner last night was chicken, rice, spinach and dried mango. I went for a short walk after dinner with my kid, 3,100 steps. I did maybe 10 minutes of yoga, self-guided, no video.

Breakfast today:
Sprouternickel, one fried egg, tomato, pesto, iced coffee.
Lunch today: leftovers. Maybe chili, and some watermelon on the side.
Dinner tonight: ?? I will defrost some fish either for tonight or tomorrow, tbd. We often get takeout on Friday nights.

Today exercise: morning walk, ~ 2 miles. Maybe a yoga video in the early evening after work.

That is great that you are running for office! I can imagine that would be very stressful.

I am glad you are able to get walking in despite your hip pain. It is frustrating when an injury holds us back from being as physical as we would like.

I hope you have a good Friday!

I am at 173# this morning, so inching down.

I went for a short walk this morning before it gets too hot. I'm hoping to start that habit back for the summer, walking early. It was only one mile, but something.

Thank you! I agree that we need more women in office. My women friends who are running are great candidates. (Of course, not every woman candidate is great, but I do think representation matters. I know things firsthand or from close friends about pregnancy, miscarriage, sexual harassment, sexual assault, ovarian/breast cancer, child care, etc.)

175 today, boo. I was green today. I did another short walk today. My average steps this week were 5,374, which is lower than last year, but better than the prior 10 weeks or so. I used to walk a lot at my old job, and also I used to walk to pick up groceries or takeout, and I'm still trying to develop new habits. Plus the quarantine leading to there being no destination has made it hard to motivate.

Breakfast: Egg, sprouternickel, pesto, lettuce. Coffee
Lunch: Persian lamb and rice, fartouch (sp?) salad. Coffee.
Dinner: Fish, leftover rice, and leftover fartouch salad. Apple. Water.

We are done relatively early with dinner (finished at 6:30). I am going to be strict about nothing more. I often do tiny cheats like some warm milk, etc.
