Meal Timing Epiphany

Post by April » Thu Jun 06, 2019 9:39 pm

I started No S having some basic windows of mealtimes (8ish, noonish, and 6ish) and found I am increasingly over-filling my plate to be certain I am eating enough to get me through to the next meal without extreme hunger, so in essence I think I was preventatively over eating at each meal. And I am wondering why the scale is not moving?!!

So my epiphany is: For those of us who are lucky enough to be able to have most of our meals whenever we choose (Stay at home Moms/Wives, Work from home, self-employed, etc) I have decided there is NO reason to eat every meal at a scheduled time if I am not yet HUNGRY (accept supper with family most nights is around 6). So the last few days I have waited until I was TRULY hungry for both breakfast and lunch, even if that means I am not too hungry at all for supper which means.....a smaller and/or lighter supper. This has meant so far breakfast between 9:30 and 10, lunch between 1:30 and 2:30 and supper usually around 6.

Looking at my overall food intake the past few days, I am certain I am eating less than I was prior to this change.

Just thought I would share for those who may benefit, or maybe for those to tell me they have been doing this all along and I am late to realize the option!

I realized this too! I realized that having a strict schedule was really throwing my No S journey off because sometimes I'd be starving when I woke up sometimes not, other times I'd be full for 7 hours and force a meal when I was not hungry. Now I've thrown out having a strict adherence and just keep in mind if I decide to eat all my meals in a 6 hour period that I can't still snack, or if I'm only hungry enough for 2 full meals during the day I can have a smaller snack-type-meal late in the night if I want it.

I guess I do this a little bit too. I have coffee w/lots of milk very early, then eat my lunch around 11am, then make dinner around 5pm. So I'm shifted a little from the regular times, too, to suit my needs.

I'm not actually hungry until 4-5 hours after I'm up, which is around 11:00, but I stuff down breakfast at 8! Thanks for the post and for the reminder. Trying tomorrow!

Re: Meal Timing Epiphany - And intermittent fasting

Post by St3v3k » Sat Jun 08, 2019 2:55 am

I was just thinking about meal timing and No S, but in a slightly different way. I left for a while to try intermittent fasting, back now but wondering if anyone has combined the two ideas before. I imagine some people eat 3 meals in 8 hours or less, so in effect they do 16 hours of fasting each day. And some people might eat breakfast super early and dinner super late, so they may only do say 10 hours of fasting. Has anyone ever played around with this? Does it make a difference? Thanks...

Hi Steve, If you read some of our most prolific daily check-in posters, they are, or have been combining IF with NoS. Some with moderate to good results. Some aren't. I think it's all dependent on the individual. Like you, as an engineer, I subscribe to KISS, and Inter. Fasting along with NoS is just another variable I may or may not be able to control. But everyone should do what suits themselves.
My personal approach is to keep it ridiculously simple(KIRSS). Hope to see you on your check-ins.

Thanks for the pointer. I have tried searching (for "intermittent", "fasting", and "intermittent fasting") but the search function keeps timing out. I will keep trying. -Steve

Not to disparage our search function, but well...... Anyway check out lpearlmom's check-in and maybe a few others on here can point you in the right direction. Linda was in IF'er, but may have stopped recently, but not sure. There are others. Have you tried just searching "IF" ?
(edit): The most famous IF diet guy that I know is Ori Hofmekler(mostly appeals to men), who wrote the Warrior Diet. Only that diet is an IF plan, where the time period for eating is only a few hours long. Ori was a former Israeli special forces soldier and his workouts were much too intense for my middle aged body even 15 years ago. So his plan would not work well with NoS, since you'd basically be eating all three meals over a few hours.

Hello April,

you are not alone: I am eating in an 8-Hour window while practicing NoS for some time now.
Breakfast 12 noon or 13:00, a small Lunch (small plate) at around 16 or 17:00, Dinner at 19 or 20:00.
On weekends I allow myself 1 or 2 treats, mostly while at a cafe/restaurant.

The weight comes off easier since I am combining the two; wouldn't recommend it, though, to newcomers, too much too quick...
I am not perfect. Having problems with the sweets during the week now and then, but I am getting better

Let's just not give up. Never..

I do that-- the 16/8 time restricted eating thing. It's more like 15/9 most days. I found it cleared up some inflammatory issues (it appears leaky gut is an Actual Thing) and when maintained, helps me not gain weight during the holidays. I am over 50, hypothyroid and female, so it hasn't by itself led to weight loss. Makes No-S easier though. My meals are only about 4 hours apart. I preach it to everyone that will listen, but not necessarily for weight loss.

I'm going to say if you feel that that schedule is working for you and your social life, just go with it and don't get caught up in the IF world. It can just become another way to stay caught in the preoccupation. (Well, it has been for me. I'm still grappling with it two years later after 3 meals stopped being as satisfying.)

P.S. I saw that a quote from me was used in a signature, and boy, do I need that reminder for other areas of my life, which have been even tougher juggernauts. Physician, heal thyself!

Ill chime in re: IF since Im probably the longest IFer on the boards. NoS only got me so far with my weight loss. I lost about 40 lbs but still wanted to lose 20-30 more lbs. The only thing that worked was IF but to be honest i couldn't do NoS and IF together. It was just too much restriction.

I did lose about 15-20 lbs with IF but i got carried away with it and it backfired on me. I ended up regaining all the weight Id lost with fasting but i have kept off the other weight at least.

Anyway, I think it’s a good option if NoS isn't enough to get you to your goals. Just don’t get too carried away with it. I recommend “Delay, dont deny” by Gin Stephens if you’re interested in learning more.
