August Challenge!!!

Post by ~reneew » Thu Jul 30, 2009 2:06 pm

Here it is... with great enthusiasm, patience, high expectations and hope...

* * * I'm issuing a challenge for you to do a better month than July! * * *

For some it will be a breath of fresh air since July didn't go as well as planned... for some this may be the ultimate challenge since they did so well! And to that I say... HA, you smarty pants people! Any way...

- *Remember* to only post once on the first page so that we can all get in at the top. This makes it easier to keep tabs on eachother.
- Please re-read that last one, some people don't get it.
- edit your first post all month so we can all keep tabs on eachother.
- after Aug. 3rd we will continue posting at the bottom for encouragement and fun.
- if you want to, write what your July was like so we know your plan, if not that's O.K. too.
- "better" is whatever you define it as...
- good luck and have fun with it!

I'm in! As of right now I have 6 horrible reds on my July habitcal. Blah! This should be good for me! I'm so excited each month to issue another challenge... I feel like jumping up and down.
I do plain ol' vanilla no s with no sprinkles, just an occasional jolly rancher for my panic button (... which I should have used in July)

Aug. 1: S day and its a good thing... I don't do well with company.
Aug. 2: S day That didn't go so well. Munch munch munch...
Aug. 3: green and a good green it was!
Aug 4: green and I've recovered from my rollercoaster weekend early!
Aug 5: green
Aug 6: green with a much needed S event  Bubble bath with wine and fritos 8)
Aug 7: green I'm planning on switching my S days around so I can avoid inevitable reds for the next 7 days. Wish me luck.
Aug 8: green and a good one! And it was Saturday!!!
Aug 9: red  there goes the 21 I'd have been at Thursday!
Aug 10: S day
Aug 11: S day
Aug 12: no comment
Aug 13: no comment  ... I'm bang-your-head frustrated with myself
Aug 14: S day
Aug 15: S day
Aug 16: Well that went real well! Someone hit me!!! At least I have no company, vacations or trips planned until next weekend. 4 reds, Oh-oh...
Aug 17: green! and a great green it was! I need to recover from my week of gluttony.
Aug 18: green
Aug 19: green
Aug 20: green
Aug 21: green with a planned S event.
Aug 22: S day
Aug 23: S day
Aug 24: green!
Aug 25: green School started today and I will have a much easier time now!!!
Aug 26: green
Aug 27: green
Aug 28: green and I'm quite proud of my little green streak!
Aug 29: S day
Aug 30: S day
Aug 31: green! This was sure a long month!

I officially did better this month than last month... just. And I'm on a roll!Whew, I feel so so much better about my diet now that I'm not home with the kids and tempted. I'm eating like a saint.

And I made my goal for the month!

I only lost a whole whoppin' 4 pounds this summer, but hey, summer is a difficult time for me. Fall is so much easier. When school starts is my best time of year to diet... I'll miss the kids, but it's so much easier to keep my nose out of the pantry!

OK I'm in too. (This is my first monthly challenge so I'd better do well!!) July went well for me, hope august does too (or even better). I don't give myself S days at the moment (except in very special occasions) & I'm on a relatively low-carb version of NoS. Other than that, standard rules apply.

(Copied & pasted the following format, hope you don't mind!)

Aug 01 (Sat) = Green
Aug 02 (Sun) = S day (as planned)
----------------------------------------
Aug 03 (Mon) = Green
Aug 04 (Tue) =Green
Aug 05 (Wed) =Green
Aug 06 (Thu) =Green
Aug 07 (Fri) =Green
Aug 08 (Sat) =Green (sadly no S days for me at the moment)
Aug 09 (Sun) =Green
----------------------------------------
Aug 10 (Mon) =Green
Aug 11 (Tue) =
Aug 12 (Wed) =
Aug 13 (Thu) =
Aug 14 (Fri) =
Aug 15 (Sat) =
Aug 16 (Sun) =

Aug 17 (Mon) =
Aug 18 (Tue) =
Aug 19 (Wed) =
Aug 20 (Thu) =
Aug 21 (Fri) =
Aug 22 (Sat) =
Aug 23 (Sun) =

GOAL: Lose 3 lbs. in August. Why just 3? I lost about 12 or 13 lbs. and I'm down to 138, so I don't have much to lose. So it's slower now I guess. Even if I just maintain, I'll be happy :)

Also, I want to keep up with my workout schedule. I do 50 minutes on the bike one day, then the next day is 30 minutes plus 20 minutes of arms/abs exercises. I try to exercise 5 days a week with Thursday and Friday as my off days. I have much more free time on the weekends, so I like to schedule my workouts over the weekend.

No-S: I do No-S Plus 1.. that is, 3 meals and one snack in the afternoon. That gap is too big not to eat something. :) It has worked well for me.

Starting weight: 137
Ending weight: 134

8/1: Crazy day! Ugh 50 minutes on exercise bike
8/2: Okay..
8/3, Mon. :good!!! 30 minutes on exercise bike
8/4, Tues.: Green 20 minutes abs/arms, 30 minutes on bike
8/5, Wed: Yellow - had a small cookie and a half inch square of brownie @Mom's
8/6, Thurs: Green nutrition, and 50 minutes on the exercise bike, and 50 sit ups and 10 push ups
8/7, Fri: Good! Except I had a Blizzard. Hmmm. 40 Minutes on Bike.
8/8, Sat: Good! Didn't "go crazy". Weight is down to 136.4..
8/9, Sun: Good. Had a piece of cake, but other than that it was just 3 meals. Half hour bike + weights/abs
8/10, Mon: Okay. Very healthy, within my cals, but I had a piece of cake... 30 minutes exercise bike.
8/11, Tues: Still 136.8! :) Green nutrition... 40 minutes on bike/20 minutes abs/weights
8/12, Weds: 135.8!!!! Haven't been this weight in a long time.
8/13, Thurs: 135 even!!! Good eating! 40 Minutes on bike, plus abs and weights.
8/14, Fri: 135.2 today, so it wasn't a fluke! :) Green nutrition, 30 minutes on bike.
8/15, Sat. 134.8 this morning! :)
8/16, Sunday: Good, had a piece of cake. 40 minutes on Bike.
8/17, Mon: Good nutrition, 40 minutes on bike/abs
8/18, Tues: Green Nutrition, 50 minutes on the bike, plus abs
8/19, Weds: 135 again! exercise
8/20 - Good, exercised too
8/21 - Good, exercised too
8/22 - Saturday, Good nutrition, did not exercise :)
8/23 - Sunday, Good nutrition, had S - brownie and 3 pieces of cake! lol. Exercised 40 minutes while watching Simpsons and Family Guy
8/24 - Going for green. Green nutrition and exercise (40 minutes on bike, plus arms/abs)
8/25 - 134.2 today! Though I'm not TRYING to lose anymore weight, if I lose more, that's great. Sticking to 1200 calories or so daily.
8/26 - exercise, good nutrition
8/27- exercise, good nutrition
8/28 - no exercise, OK nutrition (had a small piece of cheesecake!)
8/29 - no exercise, good calories, but I had cake and cookies for dinner! lol.
8/30 - exercise! Have a baby shower today. 133.2 this morning! Brand new low.
8/31 -134

I had 3 red days in July. I lost 8.6 pounds, surpassing my goal of 6 lbs. My exercise program was good all month, so I'll skip monitoring that. All in all, July was a great month!

For August, I have an important goal of losing 6 lbs again, and if the last week of July is any indication, this will be quite the challenge.
This will be great if I can do it, because it would put me at 199 (finally under 200!) in time for my birthday on September 2.

THANK YOU, RENEE! For leading another monthly challenge! 8)

I'm in. I suppose my challenge is to do something about exercise -- it's too hot to walk at lunch, the pool is closed after work, not sure what I'll end up doing. I have gotten better about taking the stairs!

Update -- all green on No S. I was sick the whole first part of August, which did my exercise and lunch-packing goals no favors, but I am plugging along.

I'm in! July was a mess, and this past week was the worst of all! in addition to 6 red days, my workouts were patchy.

-workout 4 times per week minimum.

When i lost 5lbs in the winter, i worked out 4-5 times per week and was very strict on No-S; but thats it! and it worked! i have to keep reminding myself of that.

I'm in.
After two months, my portions have been getting a tiny bit bigger every time and I know where it leads; today, I'm wearing a pair of pants that I haven't been able to wear at all last summer and I intend to keep wearing them.
So,
Besides the core No S, I'll watch my portions at all times.

But I managed to keep the boundaries so far, phew! I hope that's over...

Gosh anything could be better than my last couple of months. June started with vacation, followed by a total kitchen renovation. My eating habits have plummeted. Not having a kitchen to cook in, having to eat out more than I wanted to. Excuses I know. I've had to many S-days. I am fortunate to have some really good exercise habits to offset some of my indulgences.
I look forward to enjoying true S days. I will give it another shot.
8/01 Glad today was a weekend. Family reunion food. :D

Here I am! I'm in! My month of July had lots of yellows - both for NoS (vacation!) and exercise (healing from dog attack). So my goals will be:
1) no reds
2) less yellows - particularly in exercise
3) focus on habits

August 1 - S-Day exempt. Green for exercise. Okay, I weighed this morning (#1) eager to see any progress made in July...down one pound. (I know that I am going to weigh Sunday and Monday and take an average, but I'm thinking that it probably won't go down much - if anything, it'll go up being two of the days are S days! ) Anyway, my initial reaction was disappointment. I feel smaller judging by how clothing fits, and look smaller in the mirror (particularly in the stomach/midsection area). I think I have lost more inches than pounds, and I wish I would have measured myself at the start in May. I know I have heard many posters here mention that the scale should never be the sole standard of measurement of your NoS success. Never too late...I'll go from here. I took some basic measurements and will have them for comparison in the future.
Here are some of my successes so far:
• down 6.8 pounds in 3 months - that's an average of a little more than 2 pounds a month. In a year from now I could be down 30 pounds. I would love that, but have made a committment to let my body be the judge of its weight, not me.
• NoS habits are becoming solid - no snacking anymore - particularly the nighttime eating which was my worst nightmare. I have conquered that seemingly.
• S-days are calm and not too much different from my N days.
• no red days in June and July.
• *diet head* is almost nonexistent. Very rarely does it rear its nasty head. Whew! What a relief to lead such a peaceful existence with food and eating!

Looking over this list gives me some things to feel very good about. The best thing is that I AM losing weight and eating the foods that I love and enjoy.

Not disappointed anymore!

August 2 - S-day, exempt...Weigh-in #2 - same as yesterday! Exempt for exercise too!
Aug. 3 - NoS - green, no exercise Weight-in #3 Down 6.8 pounds total since starting!
Aug. 4 - Beach! NoS - green, exercise - green
Aug. 5 - Beach! NoS - exempt, exercise - green
Aug. 6 - Beach! NoS - exempt, exercise - green
Aug. 7 - traveling home! NoS - green, no exercise
Aug. 8 - S-day
Aug. 9 - S-day
Aug. 10 - Conference all day! NoS - green, no exercise
Aug. 11 - Green NoS, no exercise
Aug. 12 - Green NoS, no exercise
Aug. 13 - Green NoS, no exercise
Aug. 14 - Green NoS, Green exercise
Aug. 15 - exempt Green exercise
Aug. 16 - exempt
Aug. 17 - Green NoS AND exercise!
Aug. 18 - Green exercise! Yellow for NoS.
Aug. 19 - Green NoS AND exercise!
Aug. 20 - Green NoS AND exercise!
Aug. 21 - Green NoS AND exercise!
Aug. 22- exempt
Aug. 23 - exempt
Aug. 24 - Green NoS AND exercise!
Aug. 25 - Green NoS AND exercise!
Aug. 26 - Green NoS AND exercise!
Aug. 27 - Green NoS AND exercise!
Aug. 28 -
Aug. 29 - exempt
Aug. 30 - exempt
Aug. 31 - exempt

Finishing August with only some reds in the second week for exercising. I made my goal to exercise 3-5 times each week for at least 20 minutes, and during that week I only exercised once. Other than that, I was green for the month! Can't wait to weigh (did I just say that?) tomorrow to see if there has been any loss since last month! Will keep the same goals for September.

Please count me in for the challenge! I haven't been too active on these boards and my habits have been slipping this summer :( so a bit of accountability is what I need.

My goal to get back on track with vanilla no-s and being active every day in some form. I won't get sucked into diet fads and promises of quick fixes....

8/1 Great s-day. At normally and had one cookie after dinner but stopped myself from eating the second because I wasn't really hungry for it! Whoo hooo :D
8/2 S-day. Went to the gym.
8/3 D'oh RED day I didn't have a good lunch and I just ate a handful of cheezits. They weren't even good! Oh well, mark it and move on!
8/4 Yes!

I am in! I had 2 reds in July and plan all GREENS for August.

I completed 23 consecutive days on plan (until end of July) but still feel like a newbie so will stick to good old plain vanilla. Keeping to No S will be a huge challenge as we go away to France mid August, but I will make this work for me. Have my green magic marker for when we travel!

Having agreed to rise to the challenge, my goals are as follows:
1. Vanilla No S for the month of August
2. To exercise on 5 out of seven days per week (I have two events in October, so I need to get back on track- NOW!
3. I'm not aiming for a specific pound loss- because I believe that if I can do No S and exercise, and aim to focus on learning the habits it will result in a loss.
4, Drink more water!!!!!
I am not now weighing myself until the 31 August. Ideally I would like to be four pounds down on my current weight.

I hope that starting a new job and being busy will help me focus and build my confidence back up.

I am also going to give myself a treat to work towards: my hubbie says he will pay for me to have a massage at the spa here in Bath if I stick to it so that will be a nice goal :-)

Aug 1: S day with no bingeing: SUCCESS
Aug 2: S day with no bingeing: SUCCESS- no bingeing even though I loosened the reins and felt in control. Tomorrow is where the challenge really starts though!
Aug 3:SUCCESS! First day in new job, and despite the business dinner I "virtually plated" and felt just fine- and fit in a 3 mile run between end of work and before dinner.
I threw away the biscuits inthe hotel room and left the chocolate mint that came with the coffee :D
I did drink wine but felt OK with that as I know that this isn't something that I overindulge in when on business.

Aug 4: SUCCESS- still throwing those biccies away although I did have a mini-crisis hunger-wise as I got stuck in a traffic jam and by the time I reached my new hotel I was ready to eat the room- so I threw those things away and went straight down to dinner!
Aug 5:SUCCESS- but OMG I was really hungry today....i was so close to pigging out at one stage but went and had a drink and I was OK afterwards......phew
Aug 6: Feeling very stressed and hungry today. Still getting used to proper portions to prevent the hunger. I have a business meeting tonight with a new colleague who I don't feel is entirely comfortable with my arrival and also someone who will report to me who is very paranoid about where my arrival leaves him. Oh dear.....BUT ordinarily I would have got very stressed out and binged in an attack of nerves but you know what? I am in control AND these are their issues and not mine.....so I hope I will be able to get through the evening virtually plating and holding my own......I'll check back in later!
LATER...actually went better than I anticipated. I have discovered that the anxieties I experience before things are often much worse than reality, and if I had gone and done what i usually do (binge) I would be kicking myself now for having done that when really the worries were not worth that (if you can follow what I'm getting at- sorry but it's late evening here and I'm a bit inarticulate when tired!
I had a really yummy meal - two courses virtually plated but would amount, in quantity, to one large plate had i been serving myself at home.
So I am happy to say: SUCCESS on a couple of counts for me today. This challenge is really helping :) -
'Nite all

Aug 7:today I decided to swap an S day as I have had a planned event tonight. Saturday will be an N day instead and Sunday an S. This has worked for me- I attended the event and had some yummy food without feeling deprived. I have been very very hungry this week and not too happy, and this has prevented me from bingeing as I think I was heading for one otherwise!
Aug 8: N day swap- SUCCESS
Aug 9: S day with no bingeing. SUCCESS- I ate quite a lot today because again I was getting so hungry I was physically shaking. This is very unusual but have now realised that this is a side effect of some medication I started taking last week! It has made me feel pretty lousy all round so I have decided not to continue to take it but to go back to see my doctor and ask for an alternative.
Aug 10: SUCCESS
Aug 11: SUCCESS. Tablets out of my system and starting to get in to a stride today; no snacks felt OK and nowhere near as hungry as I was this time last week.
Aug 12: SUCCESS BUT I am feeling a little frustrated today. I feel no different at all> My clothes are still as tight. I still feel chubby and horrid, despite the fact that I am not putting anywhere near as much rubbish in. I do feel though that this is a little psychological as I have been living in hotels due to work since Sunday 2 and I am desperate to eat something, anything, that I have chosen and prepared myself as I have had no control over how things have been cooked even though I have tried to avoid anything obviously high fat. I am home for three whole days from tomorrow night. Whoopee!
Aug 13: ALMOST red....but managed to hang on
Aug 14:RED- no comment. I have gone mad today and feel angry and disgusted with myself. I am obviously getting used to less food as I am in pain and pretty uncomfortable right now
Aug 15: S day with no bingeing Actually I didn't eat a great deal today- not in fact becuase I was trying to compensate for yesterday but because I didn't feel too great after my binge day and couldn't face much until the evening. Went out for dinner with friends and could only manage one course whereas the others went for three! Didn't even finish my Gin and Tonic (sacrilege!) so I see this as a success.
Aug 16: S day with no bingeing: success
Aug 17: Success
Aug 18:SUCCESS
Aug 19:SUCCESS
A

Aug 20: RED_FAIL- I ATE MY HEAD OFF TODAY. Just had a bad day- no excuses, my head and my stomach weren't communicating effectively..
Aug 21:SUCCESS

Aug 22: S day with no bingeing : Anniversary, so cake and dinner; special occasion so not going to beat myself up
Aug 23: S day with no bingeing - well, although technically on an s day you don't fail, I am failing this as I did eat erratically and too too much
Aug 24: SUCCESS
Aug 25:SUCCESS
Aug 26:SUCCESS

Aug 27:
Aug 28:
Aug 29:S day with no bingeing
Aug 30: S day with no bingeing
Aug 31: Weigh in.

Good luck everyone!

I am so glad you did an August Challenge. I didn't participate in July. I have 3 things I am working on in August, the diet(of course), but also walking
M-F, and drinking at least 6 glasses/small bottles of water a day. Water has always been a challenge for me.

I am so excited. This will be fun!

I'm in! I have a few goals for this month.
1) have a week that is completely compliant with the No S diet.
2) join the 21 day club.
2) have less red days than I had last month, preferably no red days (I had 7 last month)
3) have less binges than I had last month, preferably none (I had 9 last month)
4) Obviously lose weight. I don't know how much weight I can safely lose in a month. Let's say I want to weigh 131 pounds by the end of the month. If I need to alter this goal, then I will...
5) Stick to my new mod of 2 S events per S day
6) Wean off in the week weaknesses by adding an emergency S event allowed during the week for 1-2 weeks

Saturday August 1 (Day 1): S DAY no binge; no exercise
Sunday August 2 (Day 2): S DAY + BINGE; no exercise

Monday August 3 (Day 3): SUCCESS no binge; no exercise
Tuesday August 4 (Day 4): SUCCESS no binge; no exercise
Wednesday August 5 (Day 5): SICK DAY but I'm making it a failed day + BINGE
Thursday August 6 (Day 1): SUCCESS no binge
Friday August 7 (Day 2): SUCCESS no binge

Saturday August 8 (Day 3): S DAY no binge 2 events
Sunday August 9 (Day 4): S DAY no binge 1 event

Monday August 10 (Day 5): SUCCESS no binge
Tuesday August 11 (Day 6): FAILURE + BINGE
Wednesday August 12 (Day 1): SUCCESS no binge
Thursday August 13 (Day 2): FAILURE no binge=on vacation
Friday August 14 (Day 1): FAILURE no binge=on vacation

Saturday August 15 (Day 1): S DAY no binge
Sunday August 16 (Day 2): S DAY + BINGE (small)

Monday August 17 (Day 3): FAILURE + BINGE
Tuesday August 18 (Day 1): SUCCESS no binge; 134.5
Wednesday August 19 (Day 8 ): SUCCESS no binge; 134.0
Thursday August 20 (Day 9: SUCCESS no binge
Friday August 21 (Day 10): SUCCESS no binge; 132.5

Saturday August 22 (Day 11): SUCCESS + BINGE; 133
Sunday August 23 (Day 12): SUCCESS no binge

Monday August 24 (Day 13): SUCCESS no binge; 133.5
Tuesday August 25 (Day 14): FAILURE + BINGE
Wednesday August 26 (Day 15): SUCCESS no binge
Thursday August 27 (Day 16): SUCCESS no binge
Friday August 28 (Day 17): SUCCESS no binge

Saturday August 29 (Day 18 ): S DAY no binge; 2 S events (sweet, second)
Sunday August 30 (Day 19): S DAY no binge

Monday August 31 (Day 20): SUCCESS no binge

HOW MANY BINGES SO FAR THIS MONTH? 7
HOW MANY FAILED DAYS SO FAR THIS MONTH? 6

*please note that I have filled out the month as I would like it to be, and I will change it if I need to...

**Also, I have made S days green on this challenge because I am still adhering to the diet on S days, and I'd rather just focus on the red days and making those pop visually here.

Alright, I only have 1 more N day until the end of the month. So far, I'm really happy because I've had 2 less binges and 1 less red day than I had last month. That's certainly progress! I hope I don't jinx it by bingeing every day this weekend/at dinner/Monday, but I am confident in my eating abilities lol

I'm in!

Just finishing vacation (last hotel, with internet access), so want to start August "back on No- S habit" as strongly as I can!

My focus for July was exercise - Couch to 5K - and I'm pleased to report that I stuck to it through vacation (assuming I can run tomorrow morning - there's NOT a good space for it, alas). Will be continuing that in August too.

Ok, I'm in too. I only had 5 green days last month so I'm thinking I should be able to beat that.

I also plan on weighing in once a month, but in order to do that I need to buy a scale. I got really frustrated last year when my weight was spiking so I threw that thing out in the trash!
May 2008, 202 lbs.
2009
May 254  Hello! That was 1 lb a week for a whole year!!!
July 253
Aug ____ will post as soon as I buy a scale. The other readings are from my doctor's office.

I did still manage to go down 1 lb., though that was hardly enough to impress my doctor. Go figure, hehe.

Aug 1 S day
Aug 2 S day
Aug 3 success
Aug 4 success
Aug 5 fail
Aug 6 fail
Aug 7 fail
Aug 8 S day
Aug 9 S day
Aug 10 fail
Aug 11 fail
Aug 12 fail
Aug 13 fail ok, updating this was really depressing. I can say that I have shined the spotlight on some areas (habits) that need to be dealt with (read embarrassing).

I'll go for this. In July I only had one red day, which was good, but I have done better before. Plus I was sick for a week so I had a WHOLE WEEK of S days on top of my usual ones. Not that eating soup and popsicles makes you gain weight necessarily, but I did get off habit.

(And yay, KCCC! I love Couch to 5K! I have been doing that too!)

Starting weight ~ 134
Mon/3 Tue/4 Wed/5 Thu/6 Fri/7 (Special S day - friend's last day at work)

Mon/10 Tue/11 Wed/12 Thu/13 Fri/14

Mon/17 Tue/18 Wed/19 Thu/20 Fri/21 I did have an S-event on Wednesday evening - book club! It was planned though and consisted of like 2 squares of chocolate, so I don't think it will throw me off.

Mon/24 Tue/25 Wed/26 Thu/27 Fri/28 - Friday might end up being an S-event, because we may be belatedly celebrating my sister's birthday. Depends on when that gets scheduled though.

End of month Goal weight ~ 132

July was good, in terms of meeting my own challenge. I had all green days, and I ate slowly, and I ate at the table when possible (I had a training in which there were no tables to sit at for lunch -- it was on the floor or outdoors picnic-style). I was disappointed that I only lost one pound, so I'm more determined to start exercising.

SO, for August:
Continue with green days, NO-S Vanilla, eating slowly.
ADD ON:
Ride my bike or exercise bike every am and pm for 15 minutes each session (on N days only). I've added this to HabitCal as "URBANBIKER." I just want to get into a longterm habit, and when I go back to work I want to bike to and from (I'll have a bike path for most of the way to my new school, and I think it will take me about 20 minutes). The exercise bike in my house will be the default, in case of bad weather or other variables . . . the big point for me this month is just to be in the habit of exercising when I get up in the morning and when I get home in the late afternoon. I don't want to add too much at once, so I will get into strength training exercises in September. I'm leaving S days alone, in keeping with the No S routine.

BTW: Knowing how busy I'll be this month (new job!) I probably won't write daily updates on this particular post. In terms of accountability, I will continue with my HabitCal and BigE's Daily Check-In.

I'm in! I've had to alter my foods due to some health challenges so I needed a few weeks to adjust to that and learn to not feel deprived. But now am focusing back on 3 meals a day, no seconds, no snacking, within the restrictions of my health/food plan. For now, not going to worry about sweets as long as they are with the meal. I will also record exercise & Glass Ceiling. THanks for setting this up!

Thanks Jan for the welcome!

Welcome, Moxie! Hope you experience success with the diet and fun on the board.

My goal for the August challenge is to continue vanilla no-s each day this month, and to continue slowing down when I eat. I began practicing this in late July and found it very beneficial. I was still working on my plate while my husband was finishing his second helping. Because I was still eating, I was not tempted to get up and get some more.

Thanks for setting up this challenge, Renee! :D

A thought on "challenges"...

Reinhard has a new podcast out on systemic moderation. One of the "big ideas" that I liked was the distinction between "goal-think" and "habit-think." I've run into it before - even in WW, they told us to focus on what we DID, and let the results follow, NOT to focus on results. Sounded good, but most of us had trouble with it! However, Reinhard not only expressed the distinction very well but explored some implications in a way that really makes sense.

The connection to the challenge is that I've decided that I will be very careful to keep my challenges "habit focused" (I will exercise, I will do vanilla No-S, whatever) rather than goal focused (I will lose X pounds, etc.). It's so easy to drop into goal-think, focusing on desired results rather than behavior, and that can be a real set-up for failure.

Just something to think about as we set our challenges for August...

Bushranger's August Challenge: Urban Ranger 5 days a week, Monday to Friday, for the entire month.

I must get my cardiovascular fitness back where it belongs, for too long I have let it slide. I hope this is the right kind of goal for the monthly challenge? Like what KCCC said above, habit orientated goals are where we should all focus. It's so easy to forget this and become goal orientated again, often to the detriment of long term habit.

EDIT: 11/8 Perfect compliance so far.

Well, we're off to a great start (especially since it was the weekend) I think I counted 29 of us or so thus far (some seem to wander in later... the more the merrier!) I heard lately that most people think that August is a kind of "nothing" month... the heat, the end of summer fun winding down, lack of schedule... etc. I disagree! I have fun in August... the weather is great (in the north), my fun kicks in, and one spontaneous month is good for ya! So, with that thought in mind, lets all really kick this bad habit monster in the butt!
I guess this doesn't work unless you actually do it.
Please pray for me

Oh, you'll get there soon I'm sure ... maybe by the end of the month !

You seem to be more regular, losing weight at a more steady pace ... I have been more 'wild', lol !

I guess my weight fluctuates a bit more than yours, up or down (usually down !)

Tonight I watched a 1 hour-tv-show and there was a young man (25 years old) featured who lost huh ... let me remember ... yeah, 113 pounds within 6 months.

No surgeries, just exercise and diet. Wow !! He must have been REALLY intense in every way to do something like that. Went from 368 to 255 ...
He was a bit on the crazy side : The first month he lost 24 pounds and he was all pissed off because he wanted to lose '25' that month ... lol ! Geesh ! No, really, he was furious !! :-)

I lost 58.4 pounds within the first 6 months and I thought I was losing quickly ! He almost doubled what I did (Of course the heavier you are when you start the easier it is to lose big numbers at first since you have a lot of easier BLUBBER weight to lose, but that's still mighty impressive. The program was a few years old, I was wondering if he had lost more.

Cheers !

Marc ;-)

Congrats, Marc!

I've been sick since Tuesday with a yucky summer cold. So, I'm here, boring, and sniffly. I wonder if coughing is one of those activities that burns a lot of calories?

Thanks !!

I am getting used to seeing a '1' as the first number now, I hope I can keep losing weight slowly but surely and that I can maintain around 188.0-190.0 in november ... I don't want to see a '2' again as the first number. A '1' just sounds a lot better to me. :-)

This is long term, so I plan on keeping my good eating and exercise habits, easing up a lil' bit so I don't lose too many pounds once I reach 188.0-190.0

Being sniffly is definitely a good exercise, lol !

I think Urban Ranger is the best.
Good luck with that Bushranger!

N-days really seem so easy now. No problems with sweets or snacks at this point, and I don't get up for more food though sometimes my initial plate is a little large. Will work on this in September.

I hope my S-days will follow suit soon.

In the meantime, three weeks away from the office and the routine I've developed around meals there are coming up and I was glad to read the thread Reinhard started yesterday about vacation on No-S! Still, I'm a bit nervous about it. Last time I had a mini-vacation (Memorial Day weekend), it took me a while to get back on track.

My current "I did it!" is with regard to my exercise goal - I'm doing the "Couch to 5K" and sticking to it despite vacation, shortened gym hours, etc. (One of the nice things about running is that you can do it almost ANYWHERE. Almost.)

Since the beginning of July, I've gone from being a total non-runner (I did walk) to being able to run without stopping for 25 minutes (week 7 plan). Mind you, I'm not exactly a speed demon, but it's still a major change.

More amazingly, I've actually enjoyed it. A bit of a surprise. I used to fall into the "I'll run only if chased by a bear" camp.

At the end of this month, I plan to run in an official 5k. Will report back on how it goes! :)

Haha! I subscribe to that philosophy too. I must admit I am interested in this couch to 5k program since it seems to be working for all us average Joes and Joettes. I might have to check it out once I'm a month or two into my Urban Rangering program.

Do check out the Couch to 5K, it's great! You can download podcasts to listen to that tell you when to switch from walking to running so that you don't have to time yourself. It builds you up from short intervals of running/walking to running a whole 5K. I never thought I could be a runner until I found this.

On a side note about running - I'm reading a book called ChiRunning, which is about changing your running form and keeping it relaxed so that you don't get as many running-related injuries. I've only just started it, but it looks like there are some great tips. I believe the author also does classes and may have a website too.

I'll have to look that up, Marleah. I've been toying with running after my "challenge" ends, but in all honesty I've been hesitant to take it up at this stage of life because it's known to be rather hard on the body - a lot of people are giving it up at my age! (I'm 52.)

But I need regular cardio, and the more efficient the better given my time commitments. And I can also tell that it's done some good things for me thus far - my hip flexors are very weak because I sit so much, and they're getting stronger through running. (I can tell because they're the ONLY part of me that gets SORE!! The other exercises I do have evidently kept the rest of me in reasonable shape, but missed that set of muscles.)

I've read a lot of evidence to suggest bare foot running on good grass tracks is a big step toward keeping yourself injury free also. Something to do with how it strengthens the feet and ankles while at the same time promoting correct running style. Apparently most supportive shoes actually encourage incorrect running style and landing unnaturally on the heel of the foot. It does seem to have some credence to it as the running style of the bare foot Kenyan's does seem quite more light on their feet.

De-lurking newbie here. I've been NoSing for 6 weeks now and have lost about 3 kilos. Go me! I'm not doing too bad with NoS, my August Challenge has been progressing quietly. I had a couple of DUH! moments when I went to accept a biscuit with my tea, but I think most of the weight loss is due to glass ceiling. Your comment about using alcohol as 'drunk juice' really hit home. Thanks Reinhard.

I've also just completed my first week of Couch25K which I heard about here. I'm also 52 KCCC, and a committed couch potato, but to my surprise and delight I found that I was able to finish the first week successfully after a dodgy beginning.

Now all I need to do is keep it up. These forums have been a great resource for keeping me on the straight and narrow. Thanks guys.

Sounds like a good idea as long as you are not running on GRAVEL ... ;-)

I was reading about that just the other day actually ... you can run barefoot but you build this up slowly over time to toughen your feet and get used to it. (I never considered doing that myself though, not sure why ... I already look like a weirdo doing calisthenics and running intervals at the soccer field by myself, so give me a break, please ! I think I'll run with huuuuuuuuge CLOWN SHOES instead, that would be awesome !! ;-)

Image

As for running on grass, that's what I do now ... the first time I tried running a couple of months back, I did it on hard pavement and I was walking like a lil' ol' man for 2 days after that session, it was hard going up or down steps ... I think it was a combination of running intervals on pavement and overdoing it the very first time as well.

I was surprised later on though when I ran on grass I had 90% less sore muscles and pain compared to running on pavement, even the first time ... I also stretch for 6-8 minutes now right after I am done with my running session.

Good work, Arismum, sounds like you're doing great.
It's always good when you huh ... DE-LURK. ;-)

I always admire people who run marathons and things like that .. seems like it takes a lot of training, dedication, etc. I'd be curious how many miles/kilometers I could run now, maybe 10K ? I think I could do that ... slow and steady.

I can certainly run a lot more than when I started training but I run intervals, not long distances .... I run hard and fast, not slow and steady, that's completely different (Better method to burn calories during and after the work out and build stronger leg muscles though. You work harder so it takes a lot less time too. It's high intensity for 40 minutes, pushing as hard as you can basically and then you stagger home while your legs feel like jelly donuts.)

Sprinters are all muscular and strong for a reason ... compared to marathon runners physiques, lean and mean. It's 2 completely different ways of training, not that I look like a sprinter of course, but my legs are getting a lot more muscular now, I noticed that.

Cheers !

Marc ;-)

Oh, nice shoes Marc! Didn't we all know that Mr. visuals would find something!

Well, I'm back from all of my campany and trips, and I've got some work to do to erase the damage... and I'm so so so ready!

I have to tell you guys that are thinking about running barefoot... a little pitiful story... 3 years ago when I had really tough feet from walking barefoot all of the time, or as much as possible, considering I lived in Minnesota my entire life, I had a serious foot injury. I was staining our wrap around deck (huge job) and ran to the house to get something and stepped on a rock maybe the size of a pointy ping-pong ball and it poked right in the arch of my foot and ripped the facia muscles/tendons from my heel. It took a good 2 years, a night brace, a day brace, hours of massage and ice, enough pain killers to numb an elephant and a cortisone shot in my heel for me to finally recover. The pain is gone as long as I'm careful. I now appreciate walking at all. So, please please learn from me... I can never again walk barefoot for long... even around the house! Protect your feet!
I guess this doesn't work unless you actually do it.

Yes, running barefoot could be dangerous, even on the soccer field where I train (lately I've been using the baseball field next to it instead, running in the
outfield !) There could be lil' pieces of glass, anything ... better not to take any chances. Sorry about your foot injury, Renee, that must have been painful !! :-(

Hum, other than that I'm doing good ! I lost 4.4 pounds so far in august. I'm hoping to lose between 6 and 7 this month and I'm target so far.

8-3-2009 201.8
8-19-2009 197.4

I behave like an angel, really. ;-) Don't give up and fight through adversity, alright ?

Good to check out other people's progress as well, especially Stephen's since he's been CHASING ME, catching up, huh ?? :-) You're almost under 200 now, man. That was a huge goal for me too, I notice that now that I'm under 200 I have a lot less pressure, that was like a magic number for me so any pound I lose after that is like a bonus.

Crunch time for me, literally, I've been looking into adding more ab exercises to my routine as well recently since it was too hot to work out outside due to the heatwave here. Planks, crunches, all that ... been going good so far. I was never a fan of those ab exercises for some reason. All the way throughout my journey I never did one sit up, one plank, one crunch ... My back and ab muscles must not be so out of shape though because I see now that I started doing those ab exercises I am performing pretty well anyway. All the other exercises I was doing must have helped the CORE muscles as well. Plank'ed.

Cheers !

Hi KCCC,

Doing OK with the food, not so good with the exercise. I only managed one run this week, so I'm going to repeat wk2 starting Monday. I've started a daily check in to try and keep me honest!

I haven't updated for a while but because this last friday, I had one huge red, we went to the movies, which is a pretty special occasion now a days, given the price of admission and bought candy which is also a very special thing, since I never eat regular candy any more.
Anyway, huge box of Raisinets plus one entertaining movie equals disaster.
I ate the entire box and my stomach got pretty angry at me, I had been sick of my stomach since then until today, when for first time, I have been able to eat a normal ammount of food and drink a glass of liquid at the same time without consequences, so I have been pretty demoralized and eating very small quantities, my mind being on nothing else but soothing my stomach.
But I'm still doing the challenge!.

Nichole! Great Job!

As for me:

August goal 1, 3 or fewer Red days. Failed, I got 4.

August goal 2, lose 6 lbs. Success! I'm going to be UNDER 200 for my birthday on Sept 2nd! WooHooooooo! I think it's been 20 years or so since I've been under 200!

Ran - well, ran and walked - the 5K yesterday.

In honesty, I'm a bit disappointed. Heat and steep hills got me, so I actually ended up walking more than I normally do at this point in my program.

But I finished it, and wasn't at the end of the pack by any means. My friend was 8 minutes behind me. We're both considering it a "baseline." :)

I'm pretty happy about the month of august ...

8-3-2009 201.8
8-30-2009 195.4

Down 6.4 pounds so far in august ... as long as I weigh 195.8 or less by tuesday morning, 9-1-2009, I'll be pleased. The closer to 195.0 the better though.

The only lil' thing I can whine about is that I had 4 red nutrition days in august but it was still a great month. I was hoping to have 3 or less. My % of compliance to my habits are over 85% for both the nutrition (85%) and the exercise (88%) habit, my best month ever so I was really rockin' in between red nutrition days, lining up the greens on a regular basis and working hard to erase the few glitches I had in the kitchen.

Hum, I am pleased about august ... the final number won't be there until tomorrow morning but I'll have lost between 6 and 7 pounds in august (About the same as last month). Pretty good at this point.

I am happy that I didn't crash and burn at the end of the month as I did in july. I was more in control this month and I had better compliance %'s too.

Cheers !

Marc ;-)
