RAWCOOKIE's NoS Journal

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Yeah, thanks Linda! Today, at work, there was a plastic box with two cheapo chocolate muffins in, and two bags of cheapo sweets - and everyone kept saying 'don't put those near me' - and I kept saying 'bin them!' and they kept saying 'no - you can't do that' (and I couldn't because they weren't mine to chuck) - so I moved them to another room - later someone brought them back in again! I didn't eat any of it - but I so wanted to just chuck it all in the bin! Also I noticed how, after their snacking and 'lunches' that include crisps and muffins and chocolate - they are asking for headache pills in the afternoon!

Me? well it was quite a tough N day today - I ate lunch before 12 midday because I felt hungry - then I ate dinner at about 5pm ........... I'm OK now though (9pm and I'm heading for bed soon)

Breakfast was porridge, apple, a few walnuts, a drizzle of maple syrup (about half a teaspoon - end of the jar!)
Lunch was 4 Ryvita with butter, peanut butter, Marmite, some raw carrot sticks, a peach
Dinner was a lentil soup, 2 rolls and butter, peach and soya yoghurt.

Only just a 'good enough' food day - as it's the end of the week and I was running short of stuff (I bought 2 rolls, 2 peaches and a carrot yesterday with the last of the week's budget)

I don't normally have butter, but I bought some on Tuesday when my friend came for lunch.

I have noticed with myself and others that when we nibble on what I call "empty" foods we tend to eat all the time. We are always grabbing at a little something here and there. Empty foods would be things like crackers.

Friday 22nd - SUCCESS

I've had a green August so far - and intend making it right through the month.

(oh, by the way, there was still a box with ONE cheapo choc muffin in when I got in this morning - and as I was first in, I put it straight in the trash
Today was easily done - I had slightly larger lunch than usual - a filled 'baguette' and a bag of Marmite crisps - it was lovely
Then at a friend's house after work, I was able to say 'no thank you' to the biscuits (cookies).
I went for a run/walk when I got home - then made myself a lovely pile of stir-fried veggies, bit of rice - then a few strawbs and creme fraiche :D
coffee to finish off

and am looking forward to enjoying some goodies on my S days!

S S S So Good!

Post by RAWCOOKIE » Sat Aug 22, 2015 10:47 am

I've started my S day Saturday with TWO breakfasts!

I woke up to teaming rain - pulled on my togs and went out for a run (well, you know, run/walk intervals at a slow pace - but both feet off the ground a lot of the time, therefore 'running' ok?!)
when I got back (drowned rat) I towelled down, put on my comfy clothes, and popped some toast under the grill, brewed a big mug of strong tea................. ahhh...... lovely. Butter (left over from when my friend came to lunch last Tuesday) Lemon Curd (left over from that lemon curd crave I had a few weeks' back).......... delicious. When I finished, I thought "I could eat that again" So I did! As I was buttering the second lot of toast, I thought 'I'm having Seconds'

I'm doing well with my habit. This is good. I'm not losing loads of weight - but neither am I gaining (despite enjoying 'stuff' on S days). This is also good. I'm also establishing an exercise habit - this is good.

Before discovering No S and the Everyday Systems - I'd have eaten 'stuff' every day of the week.......... or restricting, then over-eating, etc, etc, It is SO good to have the everyday system of eating just three times a day - and the weekly S days are feeling so good as a reward and recognition of my success during the week.

I've used pretty much all my food money for the week - so I hope I can be sufficiently creative to think up meals for myself with what I've got. I've done it before, so I'm sure I'll be OK.

Yay--isn't it amazing to have sanity over food?? I really think that is the best thing about NoS. The rest is just the icing on the cake. Sounds like a fun day. I wish it would rain here!

Good luck with your meals this week. My family is finally getting used to me saying "we're eating out of the pantry tonight so get creative" when we've gotten to the end of our budget. We're learning to make do some days & it's fine.

Hope you have another great S day!

I checked my bank balance on-line and found that I had another £16 in the bank. So I broke my budget and withdrew another £10 for the coming week. I was able to get some soya milk, margerine, decaff coffee, a cucumber - and have £5 left for the week in case I need it.

Didn't feel great today - but went to the beach for a couple of hours and enjoyed a nice hot mocha drink.

Then just dossed about for the rest of the day really. I made a half-batch of scones which turned out really nice (I used a recipe I saw on-line - no eggs, but did use butter and some half-fat creme fraiche - came out really light, like cake really!) - and scoffed the lot during the afternoon.

The downside of eating 'treats' on S days is the loss of appetite for my meals. Maybe I need to have lovely salads at the weekends - for my meals - and that might balance the snacks.

It's true what Reinhard says about the snacks - that they take up the place of real food - so when we eat more snacks, we eat less nutritious food overall. I'm not sure that I even like snacks anymore! I'd rather have the sweet or savoury snack/sweet actually with my meal (like crisps with my sandwich, or chocolate with my coffee as a dessert)

I suppose that's the Habit settling in! The value of the S days will be when I have to take part in an event like a party, or a meal out, where the one-plate thing would be hard to maintain - or where I really want to partake of a slice of cake to share the celebration etc. I'm getting it gradually. Also, my S days are days when I can eat those things that I have had thoughts about eating during the week. I think I still need to have some controls over the amounts I eat - like only buying one cake, or one chocolate bar, or one bag of crisps etc. I don't feel good eating larger amounts - like eating all the scones today (even though I made half the recipe - it was probably still enough for 4 people!)

Sounds like you're really getting down to the heart of the matter. S days used properly feel great but it can be pretty tricky finding just the right balance. Glad you found a little extra for some more groceries. That's always a good feeling.

Thanks for your support!

Monday was quite tricky - but the Habit kept me on track! I did succumb to having a bag of crisps with my lunch when someone said "does anyone want anything from the shop?". I knew I was using the crisps as emotional food - but I did eat them as part of my lunch - so this was good behaviour.

In the evening, I helped run a bar at a local event - and when I got home I felt instantly hungry. I hadn't had a proper evening meal due to time running out - and I'd also had a bottle of cider, so my brain almost got the upper hand. But, I'm pleased to report, Habit won! I had a glass of water, and went to bed!

Tuesday has been a SUCCESS I had a bag of crisps with lunch, but halved the size of my sandwich, I also had a fruit/nut bar as part of lunch. I did wonder if I was running a bit of a 'mod' here with my lunches - adding in the bag of crisps, then a fruit bar? but really, it was still only one 'plate' of food in total, and the fruit/nut bar is just that - fruit and nuts.

I'm thinking that in September I might want to put some controls around the crisps - maybe decide which days I will have them - and adding more fresh fruit back in to lunches.

I had a lovely veggie curry this evening (the meal I had planned for last night, but couldn't have due to not having enough time!) - red peppers, courgettes, carrots, mushroom, peanuts, chickpeas, spinach, onion and a small naan bread. Oh my! So good!

I've only got four more N days to score a Gold medal for August! I'm find that goal really motivating! Thank you Reinhard!

Wednesday - I did without the crisps today - I took an extra apple, and five Brazil nuts to add to my lunch (hummus and cucumber sarnie, carrot sticks). The bulk of the two apples helped - as did the crunch, and the time it took to eat them!

I've been out for a run - so I have two more greens on my HabitCal today - yay!

A question for any UK people - it's a Bank Holiday on Monday 31st - but I don't think it's really an 'S' - what do you think? No, I'm pretty sure it's not.

I am going to have to transfer a few quid out of my meagre savings account to eat until Monday (payday) because I don't think porride, rice and mixed nuts are going to cut it!

You're doing fantastic cookie!! I hear ya on the food budget. I only have $80 in my grocery fund till Thursday! On the up side I've got money in our eating out fund so maybe it'll just mean less cooking for me. Still I bet we're doing a lot better than before.

Yay--that's great news! Btw, I don't take bank holdidays as an S day. I actually don't take many extra S days, but I might be a little more lenient once I'm in maintenance mode.

Hope you have a great/moderate weekend!

Thanks Linda - I am not going to take Monday Bank Holiday as an S day - 2 S days are enough!

Today was less nutritious than an N day - I had crisps, a flapjack, a Bounty bar, a small slice of chocolate cake, a handful of Nice biscuits - then skipped dinner. Ha! This was due to being at work from 8am - 7pm and having to help with someones birthday party!

I had an extra slice of pizza (seconds)
ate a gingerbread man at my friend's house (sweets)
and demolished a bowl of chilli crisps (snacks)
and had two glasses of wine

Felt remorseful afterwards - but, in true No S style, on the walk home I thought 'right, mark it down as a FAIL and move on!"

 what is happening to me?! I was fine all day - but when a colleague offered me a wine gum this afternoon - I took one! in fact, I took two!

Why did I do that? It was like I forgot about No Sweets for a moment! The only thing I can pin it onto is maybe a need to be accepted by the person offering the wine gum....... I've no idea why I didn't just say 'no thanks' like I usually do. It's a very small fail - but in terms of building the habit - it was a total fail!

Having a really nice S day - two friends are celebrating their relationship of 20 years' today - and I've been at a lovely gathering with breads, cheeses, salads, chocolates to enjoy. This evening there is a party - there will be more food, and cake. It is so great to be able to join in and enjoy it without being a pain and trying to stay 'on a diet' at the party.

Yeah, I was talking from an ideal I have for myself. I find I get agitated being around people who pick a lot. And I have a really hard time on the inside for people who vacuum their food. It's really all I can do sometimes not to either laugh, sneer, or even tell them to slow down! None of those are crowd pleasers, by the way. :P

I wish I didn't feel so strongly, but the speed one actually makes me feel a little physically ill. I guess my family was more moderate than I knew, even the men. I guess it drives the fast eaters crazy to see us savoring and putting our forks down. What the hell is taking us so long, they're probably thinking. Maybe we all suffer over something. But it scares me as a single woman who hasn't given up hope of finding a good man to share the years with. Yet, I'm not sure I could jive with someone way off my track. Honestly, I can hang with overeating in general over speed eating and a lot of noise. I might be alone a lot longer...

Wednesday and Thursday SUCCESS

Today I felt my habit holding strong! I was presented with the opportunity to eat all sorts of snacks and sweet things - but I just put them all away out of sight and ear-marked them for the next S day. Very pleased with myself. I did allow myself a handful of tortilla chips with my dinner - on the plate - and a small bottle of light lager.

The Power of Habit!

Post by RAWCOOKIE » Fri Sep 11, 2015 8:33 pm

Friday SUCCESS

It's been HARD this evening - I feel hungry. I had 'tea' at about 6pm at work - it was only a sandwich and half a large apple - not enough I guess.

Then I went food shopping after work - at about 8pm. So by the time I put the kettle on and peeled off my wet clothes (pouring with rain tonight!) I was sort of aware of all the food in the house 'calling' to me! So I made the tea and left the kitchen - came to the computer. I had planned to watch a film on DVD this evening, but I don't think I can sit and watch a film without wanting to eat - so I'm blogging and stuff - then will make another mug of tea and get into bed with my reading book.

I've made it through a green week

I am looking forward to the weekend! I've got a day off, and a cooked breakfast planned - veggie sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms, a seeded bagel, coffee.

Sweet dreams!

Saturday morning - it's an S day AND a day off work - so nice relaxed mood!

I went for a run first thing, then came back and enjoyed that breakfast I'd planned. The sausages weren't as good as I'd hoped (they were like cheesy potato cakes really) quite tasty - but didn't hit the 'sausage' spot! I was surprised at how moderate I was: two sausages, one tomato, about 4 mushrooms, one bagel and butter.......... I was full!

But about half-an-hour later I ate three cherry chocolate liqueurs that had been sitting in the fridge waiting for an S day! And three shortbread biscuits (cookies).

However, it's only 10am and there's time to put a stop to perma-grazing through my S day!

Off for a shower - then out into the day!

I've been reading through some of the long-term-NoSers blogs - and one thing I notice is the struggle waged by folk who have been brought up by generations of over-weight people. I remember reading that if you live with, or work with, people who are slim, you are more likely to be slim - and visa versa. I've certainly noticed that myself - I currently work with a team of people who are all slim or normal weight - it's a strong influence. In the past I've worked with people who were over-weight - and it made me feel that I was OK when I was a bit heavy.

Another thing I've noticed about myself, and I think it might be true of many others, is that some of us are not 'genetically disposed' to be overweight - but we certainly put on weight easily if we eat more calories than we need. We've got very efficient bodies! We're not born to be fat - but we're born to run on less fuel than some other people. Tough in a world that relishes eating! Tough - but I'm stuck with it - now the trick is to learn to appreciate it!

Thanks Linda.

When I looked back over Saturday, I had had three meals and three snacks in between. I was pleased because my snacks were 'normal' portions! I had three cookies with my coffee and not the whole jar-ful! I had 150g of ice-cream as dessert - and not the whole 500g carton. I had a slice of cake, and not the whole cake (didn't actually like it - so the rest is waiting to be binned. I had a bowl of Doritos when I watched a film in the evening - and didn't go back to empty the bag! This is progress!

It's Sunday morning now - and I'm off to work in a bit. But this morning I actually didn't 'fancy' anything much - I enjoyed having some marmalade on my breakfast toast.

I am a bit frustrated that I can't weigh myself - as it's 13th and I want to keep my record up to date! Probably why No S works for me - I like systems! I will be able to weigh on my own scales on Wednesday morning.

Hi RAWCOOKIE
Hope it's good news from your home scales on Wednesday. I think it's great that you keep your S days on Saturdays and Sundays instead of shifting them around to match your days off. It seems to me that what you are doing ultimately makes more sense and gives greater consistency.

Yes, it seems very dangerous to me to move S days around! The whole system thing makes such sense to me that I don't even want to modify it. The psychology of the habit really works for me.

Today was an interesting S day. I had toast and marmalade for breakfast - which I enjoyed. My packed lunch for work was a bagel with a bit of cheese and cucumber, half a large apple. An afternoon 'snack' was a carob-coated seed bar. I felt really hungry on the way home - but when I got home I made a lovely plate of coleslaw (homemade) with two veggie sausages, 4 olives, and three Ryvita with butter, followed with 100g of Phish Food Ben & Jerry's ice-cream which totally satisfied my sweet/chocolate appetite.

There are some coconut cranberry macaroons in the cupboard - they are 41% sugar - and, amazingly, I actually didn't like them! Same with the birthday cake that was left for me - it was too sweet, tasteless really - just sugar. I'd never have thought I'd have said anything was too sweet - but having 'No Sweets' from Monday to Friday seems to have changed my taste-buds! I did still enjoy the ice-cream which is 28% sugar.

Tuesday SUCCESS

and I'm using the 9" plate (found one for myself in a charity shop today)

Today I went to a morning yoga class which ended at 11am. I came out into a holiday atmosphere - the sun was out and there were lots of happy, relaxed, people around the harbour and in the town. All the little cafes had their tables out etc - the vibe was one of 'eat, drink & be merry'!

I considered getting a coffee - but then thought I could make one at home. I considered getting a wrap or a salad box - but thought I could make lunch at home. So I travelled home and made myself lunch and a coffee at about 1pm. Snack free! Yes!

Interestingly I did buy myself a couple of pretty scarves, and a second-hand 9" plate............ like I had to 'get' something, but this time it wasn't food/snack/sweet/or even a coffee. This is a good sign, I think, that the Habit is really getting established now. I'm liking it!

Friday SUCCESS

I went shopping today (I've got company tomorrow) and bought myself a bar of chocolate for the weekend - spent ages choosing, to make sure I had only 100g and not 200g (Lidl is SO tempting!) - and a higher % of cocao - so that sugar is not the first ingredient! I also bought some tea-cakes (not sure if have them in USA - they are sort of fruited yeast buns - you toast them usually)

I think that's smart to really take the time to pick out special treats for your S days. Makes them so much more satisfying. You've inspired me to get some special truffles for this weekend (if I'm feeling better).

I looked up tea cakes and they seem to mean different things in every country. According to Wikipedia, they if mean different things in different sections of England. It says they have them in the us but I'm not familiar with them. It might be a southern thing or something.

Anyway looks like you're doing really well. Enjoy your company and those S day treats!

Hey Linda!

The tea cakes I have are made of a sweet bread-dough with some sultanas and mixed peel in, and a little dash of cinnamon (or similar) - they are round and flattish - sort of like a burger-bun, and you split them in half and toast them.

I've had a good S day - my only problem is that I have more food than I can eat! This eating less is an interesting challenge.........

The chocolate I bought was FAB - the first ingredient was cocoa mass, the second was almonds, and the third was sugar - so quite dark. I've only managed to eat half of the bar - this is a change for me as I'd normally just eat the whole darned lot!

The tea-cakes are untouched - will be a Sunday treat!

Also, at breakfast today I had planned to have toast and marmalade - but when it came to it, I didn't fancy the marmalade - so I had peanut butter instead. I think this is due to having No Sweets during the week. Am I losing my sweet tooth?

Monday SUCCESS

I went out to lunch today - I had a baked potato with cheese, coleslaw and a bit of mixed salad on the side - very 'home-made' sort of meal which I enjoyed. It was served on a plate that was barely 9" - I noticed this as I'm into measuring my plates at the moment! And it was PLENTY to eat. I had a mug of tea with it and although I looked with admiration at their array of home-made sweet stuff - I calmly made a mental note to come back on a weekend day and enjoy something sweet.

It's still amazing me that the HABIT of No S is so robust it actually seems to 'switch off' the self-permission to fail on a N day! We're quite simple in a lot of ways - I love that Reinhard figured this out for me!

Tuesday SUCCESS

I delayed my breakfast today and ate my first meal around 10am. This worked well because I had to go out quite early and just KNEW I'd want to eat when I got back. Normally I'd just eat breakfast before going out - but this plan worked well today (I'm on holiday - wouldn't work on a work day!)

very sane eating today, very sane
gosh - I am looking forward to Saturday :)

I was 8stone 11lbs first thing - went for a run, had a cup of tea, had a poo, and before my shower I stood on the scales again 8stone 10.25lbs - ha - I'll take that one :)

I know, for sure, that I've been including rather a lot of bread and pastry in my three meals recently - and that's the reason I'm not losing much. I'm considering making myself a rule around bread, pasties and crisps.

less of a sweet tooth

Post by RAWCOOKIE » Sat Sep 26, 2015 4:37 pm

Saturday - S day which I was looking forward to - slightly less exciting than I hoped for.

I had a hot chocolate after swimming - which I'd planned - and it actually tasted SO sweet I could barely drink it. This must be because I'm not eating sweet stuff 5 days a week.

In the afternoon I went to the beach with a friend, and she went for an ice-cream. Now I usually love ice-cream, but they didn't have anything I fancied, so I didn't have one. Again - this must be due to a change in my taste for sweet things. I had a cup of tea, a packet of crisps and two shortcake biscuits instead.

Yup, this is the first time I've 'seen' it in action, but I've definitely got pickier! Today I went to my favourite, locally-made, ice-cream shop and had a wonderful portion of the most delicious ice-cream!

Minimizer - no, I don't like the soft-whippy type of ice-cream - can you believe that?! But, yes, they still have them here ;)

Monday SUCCESS

Today I sat in an open plan office with a jar of lollipops (left over from someones's wedding party), and a box of chocolates. I wasn't even mildly interested. Then after work, a friend invited me to stay for dinner (I know what their dinners are like) and I refused gracefully. Came home and had my own one-plate meal. I've got a date with them to have dinner in a couple of weeks' time - that will be an (my first) extra S day.

Tuesday SUCCESS

I didn't quite have a big enough breakfast this morning - and I watched the clock tick from 11am to 12 midday (which is the earliest time I permit myself to eat my packed lunch!). When I got home after work, I made a quick meal of cous cous and veggies - phew!

Those sweets and chocs were still there today - along with a packet of biscuits/cookies. Three of the team went down to the shop at lunch-time and bought pasties - I ate my lunch first, then walked down to the post office. It's a carboholic workplace!

This line-up is SO pleasing :)

The last two days of September have been quite a challenge - I've felt hungry but had to wait for my meal - like today, I had 7 hours between lunch and dinner - made it!

I'm awarding myself a BRONZE medal for having only two red days in the whole month.

Thursday SUCCESS

I had a weird sort of meal tonight to use stuff up - a scoop of a left over tofu hotpot with dumplings, four pimentoes stuffed with cream cheese, a baked apple stuffed with raisins and nuts. I didn't put the baked apple on the same plate as the hot-pot!

Friday FAIL

well, it was a 'mild' failure, but a failure all the same: I had dinner at a friend's house and had Seconds and a Sweet.

The main was just aubergine/tomato bake, rice, green beans. She'd made a dessert of fresh raspberries, cream, and a reduced-sugar sponge cake. I had a serving of the dessert, then we both had seconds. Both servings were moderate too - as she is a slim person and eats smaller portions than me generally!

yep - I was tempted not to call it a 'fail' - and it wouldn't have been if I was calorie-counting - but in terms of HABIT - it was. I could have not eaten the dessert - she would have happily put a portion in a box for me to take home to enjoy today (Saturday!) I chose to use eating to 'bond' with my friend. That's OK. It wasn't a planned event, and it wasn't a special occasion, so I couldn't call it an extra S day. Accepting a 'fail' doesn't come easy to me - but it's part of the No S system - and it's working for me, so I'm doing it!

Having said that - I am DETERMINED to get a Silver Medal for October - so that will be my ONE red day - full stop! I have a dinner party to go to on 23rd October (Friday eve) and am going to take that as an extra S day because it will be very unsociable NOT to partake of the food!

Thursday SUCCESS

I am getting a bit fed up of working in an office where people keep buying crap snack foods and leaving them on the table next to mine - it's not that I want to eat them or anything, but it's just a bit sort of tiresome to have to keep watching people graze on crap!

I just checked my stats on HabitCal - and was pretty pleased really!
July = 87%; August = 100% (Gold medal); September = 90.9%
this seems like a very good 'measure' to me.

Now that I've kind of 'settled' into the habit of No S - I am finding that one of my greatest pleasures is the relaxation of rules on Saturday morning - I just love that Saturday breakfast :)

Today I had a great Saturday-ish Saturday! For years I have worked shifts - but I'm currently working office hours 9-5, M-F and I'm really enjoying the weekends :D

Before breakfast I went for a hike up to the top of town to collect a parcel from the mail depot - then on the way back I popped into the shop and carefully selected a small package of extra mature Cheddar cheese - because that cheese on toast was what I wanted for my lovely S-day breakfast! And cheese on toast was what I had - three slices, with mustard and a little bit of salt - OMG did I enjoy that!

Hi, I just read your entire thread and to watch your journey is amazing.

I applaud you for all you have learned and were willing to share.

I have been on this board for years and don't really have to follow the No S rules so much anymore as it is ingrained in me to not eat snacks (which were my downfall, especially the "healthy" snacks that are marketed today.

What I have learned that has helped me the most is that hunger is a normal feeling and it used to be the norm that people were hungry at meals. My dad was a big, strong, railroad engineer for decades yet I can clearly recall him eating oatmeal and toast for breakfast most days, then taking his black lunch box with a sandwich, a couple pieces of fruit (we had a big orchard) and a thermos of coffee. Yes, he was hungry for dinner but he should have been. Hunger never used to be a bad word as it was a normal reaction to having gone a length of time without food.

Nowdays, I have found starting with infants, newborns really, that food and drink are always handed to them when they make the first little sound or face. I have seen mothers at church haul out a huge back of snacks and drink options to quiet a child - when perhaps the child wasn't even hungry. I doubt that any new vehicle today would make the market without multiple drink holders for each passenger - as if they might die of thirst before reaching their daily destination.

I shall continue to follow your travels to a better life and encourage you every step of the way. And I love reading about all the locales and regionals foods. I live in the Missouri Ozarks so we have our own "language". hahah...

Gosh! Thanks Berry :)

Sunday felt a bit a-drift generally - I've had a very busy week work-wise; a lovely day yesterday - but today maybe I just needed to tread water for a bit. That's OK. I started the day with my lovely breakfast - that seems to one the most enjoyable features of S days - a nice breakfast. Today it was vegan sausages, beans, fried bread (can't remember the last time I had fried bread - it was only one small slice of bread - and it was delicious!). From then on things went a bit sort of sugar-shaped: biscuits, sweeties, biscuits again! I almost didn't bother making myself dinner, but I did bother: a steamed nut-pudding, boiled spuds and some brussels sprouts.

It's like when I let go of the 'strings' I just flop like a puppet! Still - it's an S day so there's no harm done! I'll probably regret the sugar tomorrow - and will make sure I take enough to eat for lunch - maybe two pieces of fruit with my sandwich!

I woke in the night feeling quite sick - I wasn't actually sick, but I had the feeling.

I put this down to the way I ate yesterday (Sunday). It wasn't actually a LOT of food - because when I went to bed I ran through what I'd actually eaten during the day. What I'm finding is that I don't eat my S foods (sweets, snacks, seconds) as extra to my meals - but instead of my meals - so I'm still only having three eating-events during the day - perhaps four at most. Yesterday (as you can read in my previous post) was sugar for lunch (a lunch that went from about 1pm to 3pm in a mini-permasnack).

The last time I felt like this was when I'd been eating raw vegan for a while (yes, I've done that one - lost loads of weight but couldn't maintain the lifestyle). If I ate anything that was cooked - I'd be sick!

Bless my body for being so willing to set new boundaries - it has set new boundaries around my No S habit - so when I stretch it too far at the weekend, it will let me know!

I'm making different plans for next weekend - and for S-day eating in general.

Monday SUCCESS achieved through great determination! I had to chew gum twice today!

work is just getting silly in the amount of sugary cakes/biscuits they have - mental!

Wednesday SUCCESS

This morning I was pleased to see the scale say 8stone 9.25lbs - and I'm taking that as my monthly measure - to give me something to aspire to!

I have found it really helpful to weigh daily - it's taken the 'power' out of it. I can see that I fluctuate between about 8stone 11.25lbs and 8stone 9.25lbs - which is only a TWO POUND variance - so that's it pretty darned awesome I reckon! I am getting to really see what foods push the scale up and what brings it down. I'd like to hit 8stone 9lbs again next month and maintain that lower weight.

Friday SUCCESS

I survived going food shopping after work, and standing at the bus stop next to two young men who were eating pizzas and giant cookies! I didn't even need my chewing gum actually - I was focussed on what I was going to enjoy eating for my dinner when I got home.

Sunday. Today I am posting so that I have a record of my No S journey here to refer back to. Last weekend, I felt sick on Sunday night because I'd over-done the sugar, AND made myself 'eat a proper meal'. Waking in the night feeling sick was a wake-up call.

So, because of that, on Saturday I found that I moderated my eating without even trying. I went out early (7am ) to go to a ParkRun 5k event. So I was up at 5.30am and had one small slice of toast and peanut butter with my coffee before I left home. After the run, I ate an apple, then got a coffee and a cake which I ate on the bus ride home (11am). So that, in total, was not too much for 'breakfast and snack' on Saturday.

For lunch at about 2pm - I bought a cheese and chive pasty, which I heated up in the oven at home. I had half of it with some tomatoes on the side for lunch. (I didn't feel compelled to eat the entire pasty)

In the afternoon I had 6 ginger biscuits from a packet of 12 (instead of eating all 12 like last week!), and a bit of chocolate (30g) from a 100g bar (again, didn't go back for more).

In the evening, I watched a DVD and ate the other half of the pasty.

So - although that wasn't a great day nutritionally, I did feel suitably 'eSsed' by having a cake after running, and cookies and chocolate in the afternoon. The pasty - which is usually a weekend thing as it's heavy on the calories - was actually eaten as lunch and dinner.

As a result I slept peacefully, and didn't wake up starving on Sunday morning. Sunday is all planned out too - and promises to be moderate.

Wednesday SUCCESS

One thing I've noticed is that I'm sort of less 'fussy' about what I'm eating - I make nice meals, but it doesn't really matter so much what it is. I guess this is because I'm actually hungry three times a day and appreciate what food I have available. I'm spending much less on food too!

Tomorrow I'm taking my first ever EXTRA S day. I was invited out to a dinner party at my friends' house - it was planned before the beginning of the month, and I decided at the time that this would be an extra S day. However, I'm going to have a 'normal' day - with breakfast and lunch - then the evening will be my S event.

Friday is an EXTRA S DAY

Going out to dinner tonight and really looking forward to it.
I had breakfast, lunch, and a small snack of 4 oatcakes with some Dairylea spread at about 5.30pm to 'keep me going' until dinner time.

No seconds even on a non-weekend S day!

Post by RAWCOOKIE » Sat Oct 24, 2015 8:49 am

Yesterday evening I had my first planned 'extra S day' as I went to a dinner party at a friends' house. I was apprehensive as it was the first time I've gone 'outside' the rules of No S on weekdays....... I suppose I was slightly fearful that my 'old behaviour' would re-emerge and that I'd throw myself into an orgy of eating and drinking! It didn't happen - the habit remained strong!

The table was spread with food - they'd done a sort of Greek street-food theme - there were several dishes and we were invited to help ourselves. I took a small portion of each thing that I wanted.

I didn't actually have any seconds (without even trying - I was simply 'full') and didn't feel I'd missed out on anything. I didn't try to restrict myself - but I found that the 'plate' habit was there, and I got 'full' much more quickly.

The dessert was then another table-spread: ice-cream, cream, Smarties, chocolate sauce, butterscotch sauce, walnuts, toffee-popcorn, honey, yoghurt - and we were invited to build our own 'mess! I had one spoon of ice-cream, and small sample of everything else (no cream or yoghurt) - and, again, I did not have (or even want) seconds.

I've had a really great weekend eating-wise.

I am now finding that I don't really want much 'extra' food on S days - and the S foods are not being eaten as extra, but as instead of a meal. Today I had a Mars Bar (which I'd bought yesterday) and two shortbread biscuits with a cup of tea late morning - and then I didn't eat until dinner time. So, effectively, I missed 'lunch'

I'm also finding that I haven't got much of a crave for things at the weekend. In the first weeks of NoS I was craving things and looking forward to the weekend - now it seems that I don't really have much of a crave at all. Not saying it won't happen, it's just not happening at the moment! I love a bit of shortbread......... and a bit of chocolate........ and that seems to satisfy me. I don't think I've even had crisps lately (USA chips)!

I am even throwing food away at the end of my meal - even with the 9" plate. Eating half of things - I'd never have done that pre-NoS!

Hi RAWCOOKIE- I'm so glad you thoroughly enjoyed your special S meal. That sounds like it was an amazing spread!
Also, it's great that you're finding yourself satisfied with less food! (I hope that will happen for me at some stage. I think I hit a point where I am physically satisfied, but not so much psychologically... I just want to keep on eating, and there is still food on my plate, so I do. This is especially hard for me when I am in a place where I cannot take leftovers away (when I am staying somewhere without a fridge, for example) and when I have already paid for the food like in a restaurant. I don't know if that will develop on its own, or if I have to put some effort into it!)

Friday

I'm excited!

Firstly - it's the last N day before the end of October and I'm going to post my HabitCal here this evening :)

Secondly - I know it's not wise to get excited about scale readings - but I weigh pretty much every morning to take the power out of it - and this morning I saw 8stone 8.75lbs. That is the first time I've seen 8.8 for a VERY LONG TIME. And although I know I might not see it again for a while, the knowledge that my trend line is heading downwards is really encouraging. This is just from doing No S as it's written - no extra restrictions.

Yes, but I do it daily - it was on the October Challenge thread. I've just started one for November - I go in and edit it each day. There's something appealing to me about the little faces, and the shape of the line-up!

Tuesday SUCCESS

I've just had breakfast - 2 slices of toast and cheese spread - followed by the biggest urge ever to have seconds. Of course, I won't, because I don't - but I'm surprised to have the feeling. Perhaps it's the weekend pounds coming off again.

I recall that, about four months' ago when I was new on here, someone blogged about having to feel hungry to lose weight. I disputed that at the time (my fear of hunger speaking probably) - but now, I'm thinking they might be right. Now that I'm getting more at ease with a slight feeling of hunger, I'm wondering whether that is also a sign that my body is using up some of it's own stored energy? Just musing...............
