beginagain NoS (no bingeing) check in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). I'm counting tomorrow, 1/9/17, as my first day because I'm adding No Bingeing to Vanilla No S. I've been listening to the podcast about S Days Gone Wild and want to follow his advice about not adding extra rules. S Days aren't suppose to be binge days. I've got to break that terrible habit.

Green. Held the thought today (from the No S Diet book) that regarding building habit, strictness makes it easier, it's being lenient that makes it hard. That is going to be my mantra.

To avoid bingeing this coming weekend, I'm reading chapter 5. This jumped out at me in regards to the result of moderate eating, that eventually "you become awake to the joys of the ordinary."

Day 5 is green. Even though all is going well, I feel like I need to reinforce my fences and prepare for any sneak attack from myself that would derail me. I am feeling vigilant, I guess . There is comfort and strength in Reinhard's words regarding this, he says "It's important to remind yourself that reinforcements are on the way, that habit will soon start to take over from your conscious mind. " Habit takes awhile to form, he says. I am "battle ready." What I really have to watch out for, though, is thinking I'm strong, that's when I get careless.

way to go! you made it a week :) five green days in a row...nice. I love that you are getting into the book and finding help for yourself for the bingeing weekends. I've seen a lot of frustration on the FB group about this issue... doing just fine all week, and then reversing everything by overdoing S days.

Hopefully these quotes and tips will help you. Some day, you will find much pleasure from the extra special-ness of little treats and tastes on S days.

SDay Saturday was a successful one for me, no bingeing. I kept the 3 plate habit going, I like that clarity and moderation. I proactively chose to have one piece of my husband's pineapple upside down cake. He has diabetes and bakes delicious sugar free desserts from time to time. Later, after dinner, I had one piece of banana nut cake he had made that was in the freezer. I figured to have a treat that made sense was safer. Binges are usually about nonsensical foods and portions.

Thanks for your support Allison! I decided to believe Reinhard that bingeing is a habit. It's a habit that CAN be broken, and that's good news. I am carefully re-reading the book and re-listening to the podcasts.

End of week 1 today with a moderate SDay.

Day 9 green. I'm very happy about how it's going. Mainly that I feel so motivated. I haven't been able to stay motivated for more than a day or two in a long time. And was afraid I wouldn't be able to discipline myself anymore. What I realize now is that I had just hit my diet brick wall, at age 57 and after yo yo dieting since middle school. Just sooo tired of it, and the effort , and always gaining the weight back at some point. That's why I'm so stoked about Reinhard's teachings on HABIT.

Yay you're doing great!

I know I had been dieting since I was 10 and was just done. I'd start a diet in the morning and break it by nightfall. I decided sanity with my eating would still be worth it even if I never lost a single pound. Luckily with NoS I was able to do both. Very slow process but so worth it.

Glad you found us. Habit is freedom. :)

lpearl, I read your message this morning and was and am very encouraged by your experience with NoS . Thank you so much. I have liked your signature from the start, and still do. Vanilla No S and 14 mins exercise a day. And wherever that leads is where you're meant to be. That's what I want. Thank you again. And today is green.

Day 12 will remain green. I'm halfway to the the 21 day mark. The only time that I am having to exert willpower, a little, is close to bedtime. My willpower muscle is getting stronger, however. I'm so convinced that the strictness of the habits will internalize, that THERE IS NO WAY I'M GOING BACK.

Day 13, an S day. I see how psychologically good it feels to have freedom. I don't want to do anything different really, but just knowing there is freedom feels good! I have not binged, or bent the rules at all. I will say that posting has been a big part of it. It really helps! The freedom to be able to talk about it is a strength. I am hopeful that the NoS Diet is the cure for me. I am praying to God.

I'm still on habit and doing well, no red. I've begun another habit that I call bicycle30. It's 30 minutes every morning on my stationary bike. I look forward to it and feel good about doing it. I'm in 11 days now. I was inspired by a patient where I work. He's been doing this 5 months straight. No days off with this habit, as it is needed due to my sedentary job.

I'm going to implement some advice from pages 134 - 136 of The No S Diet book. I can tell that sometimes, usually at dinner, I pile too much food on my plate. The No S Diet has the ability to help me spotlight excess. Now that I'm getting the basic rules ingrained a little, I want to carefully start putting less on my plate.

Today I ordered some portion control plastic plates with measured dividers. My husband, when I told him that I've been building the habits consistently, and not really losing, very nicely told me that my portions are too big....I agreed! Haha
This is my way of avoiding going back to counting calories. And of furthering the psychological aspect of learning moderation. I am sure my body doesn't need the amount of food I've been giving it.

I'm sure those plates will be really helpful. I looked at them when I started No S, but in the end I decided to just buy myself a 9" plate - I now have two. It looked far too small to begin with, but it's now become normal.

RawCookie, that is good to hear, that it became normal. I will use that 9" plate idea too. It's hard to imagine now, but I'm going to believe that it will become normal for me too. When successful no essers share info like this, it helps me to trust the process. Thank you!

The 9" portion plates I got are very helpful. I love the way my food doesn't run together on the plate because of the division of portion sections. It helps me practice the "plate method." Also helps getting used to less food. Really cool.
Because of my age, 57, I am going to continue with N Days through the weekends as much as possible. The consistency really helps me. I think that on an S day , I will evaluate, and see what leeway I need. It's possible that eating from any plate I want on S Days would be a nice way to loosen the reins. Will experiment and see.

I've been thinking about the idea of food sobriety. I have trouble with binge eating on s days. S days aren't meant to be binge days. The idea of Food Sobriety I think can help me. I have an addictive personality. The No S diet is So Valuable in helping that, with defining the boundaries using three single plate meals. With sober eating in mind, s days should have the same boundaries. Somehow mixing it with the feeling of freedom. But in my mind, staying food sober being of utmost importance, and governing s days. Does that resonate with anybody else?

Sorry I didn't respond way back when. It did resonate, though I'm not sure what you would define as food sobriety. Being sober with food can't be quite the same as being sober with booze or drugs.

But it's perfectly okay to figure out how to navigate S days for your own situation. I've been toying with a new mod myself, just because for the first time in several years, beginning of the school year frustrations have become an excuse to fall back into junk-food-after-the-kids-leave habit again that spills into weekends. Back to Vanilla and a new mod I'm ready for. Been doing some reading today and decided to also offer encouragement.
