Nettee's daily check in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Success for Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday. Weekend away with meals out and ice cream but not too much madness.

The great news is that I have now decided my size 16 trousers are too big to be respectable and have moved over to my size 14s! So pleased to have dropped a dress size at last. My weight has not yet completely recovered from skiing and the week that went wrong at the beginning of May but I am only 1 lb over my lowest weight to date so hoping to have some good news there before too much longer.

The running is going well and I am now on week 6 of my training plan and ran for 20 minutes straight on Saturday morning.

We are away for half term next week. It is harder to stick to the habit but not impossible. We are self catering so can limit temptations.

Half term is lovely especially if you get the week off work. It is a week off school half way through the term.

I did fine on the bank holiday Monday with a success but had a full on failure yesterday afternoon. Self catering is only good for minimising temptations if you don't buy any

Out to lunch today so will see if I can avoid pudding!

I call afternoons the witching hour. That was when my compulsive eating of sweets and starches would start and not stop until bed time.

I used decaf mochas a lot in the beginning, though you don't have to. Can you change your dinner time for a bit, to decrease the gap?

You are in good company.

I agree that having June start might be helpful as well as envisioning how glad you'll be on Saturday if you have two green days to round out the week.

You can do it!

Under your last post, there were two books advertised with the witching hour in their titles. Next time, there'll probably be four, now that I've used the term again.

Success for a Wednesday and Thursday. A minor failure for Friday when I kept extending supper with nibbles of crisps and cheese..

I decided to have an N day today as an experiment towards only one S day per week and that was a success. Felt quite good to be back on the habit after just one day off. Saturday was a reasonable S day - maybe one to many sweets for my liking but never mind.

There is certainly no obligation to have an S on an S day. I think of them as S days because of the OPTION, not actually having an S at all.

When you feel sweets have become a burden is the best time to limit them.

Great news this morning - new low of 11st 1.75 lb which means I am down by just over a stone and a half ðŸ˜.

This half stone has been a long time coming but I have kept going and here we are. I am keeping on with my one S day per week - I think this is the mod for S days that I have found the easiest to stick to. A very clear boundary. I did feel that I had plateaued before then and now things are moving again.

9 months in now and no sign of getting fed up!

I ran 5k in a park run on Saturday which was fun.

I'm in awe of sweets bakers. If I legitimately had people to bake for, I'd consider facing the gauntlet. Rarely did any stuff get baked, never mind get to any recipients. If anyone enjoyed yours, kudos! But I know it's worth the higher standard you set for yourself. I have faith you'll get there.

We don't bake much because I can't resist it! But the children love to do it so we do sometimes.

Success for yesterday and a new low of 11st 1lb today. Last day of school term today so no more routine till September. Hope the habits are well enough engrained to make it through.

I bake on some S days. If it's something like cookies, I usually put a couple in a baggie and put them in my drawer. That way, as the kids are eating them during the week, I don't care if they finish them off because I know I still have two for my next S day.

I pretty much cut the food at theaters habit even before no ass, and honestly it's still a relief when I go in and know I'm not gonna get anything. Judith Beck says it's when we give ourselves a choice too often that we feel the struggle.

Success for Sunday, Monday and a Tuesday. New low of 11st 0.75 lb this morning. Crazy S day on Saturday that made me glad to be going straight back to N days.

The running is still ongoing. I have my 10K race in just under two weeks. I am a bit behind on the training so quite nervous about how it will go.

Thank you Whosonfirst.

The progress seems to have picked up this week and I am down another pound and across the 11 st barrier at 10st 13.75lb this morning.

Possibly a bit of dehydration after a long run yesterday afternoon but I'll take it

back to work for a long day today and then a tribute band concert tonight - should be fun.

Goodness, it has been nearly 2 weeks since I last posted. All ticking along fine with lots of green on my habitcal which I have been marking. I did my 10 k in just under 1 hr 20 min so am pleased with that. No more weight off so a bit of a plateau but that is fine after my quick drop last month - a bit of consolation.

Hello all. This is going to be a long post. It is 2 minutes to midnight and I am buzzing awake.

The day after my last post, on Wednesday 9th August, my son had a major injury. He is going to make a full recovery but it will take a long time.

He was hit by a bus when out with a friend and had concussion and a broken leg. I met him at the doors of A&E and he asked me why he couldn't see properly. At that time he couldn't remember anything that had happened that day. he had a big black eye and cuts to his face. His leg was broken and his skin on his leg appeared a bit shiny and red with the odd graze.

He had a CT scan quite quickly which was normal and his vision and most of his memory of the day came back very soon although he still does not remember the time between being hit and being in hospital. He was conscious and talking to lovely people all the time. The staff in A&E and throughout our experience, were the kindest most professional people you could hope to meet. He had a broken leg which needed surgery the following week and was casted.

Two days later we were sent home with a wheelchair and an appointment in fracture clinic for the Monday. He had broken his collar bone which we found out the day after the accident when he couldn't use crutches. Neuro obs were fine although he was sick a few times with the concussion. This did not recur

We had the weekend at home during which time a bruise spread up above his cast and transfers from sofa to wheelchair became more difficult. We met the consultant on the Monday who showed us a Taylor Spacial Frame (google if you would like to see) and said he would apply it first thing on Tuesday morning. lots of info re pin sites and diet etc.

A very nervous boy arrived back at the hospital the next day and went to theatre. My mum came to wait with me and we were called back to see the surgeon after an hour which was much sooner than expected. He broke the news that the skin had been damaged in the accident and we needed to go to a bigger hospital for plastic surgery. He had lost a lot of blood under the skin and needed an ultrasound to make sure he wasn't bleeding from anywhere else to cause his low Hb so we did not arrive at the Children's hospital until the Wednesday afternoon via ambulance transfer. He had a temporary external fixator applied to his leg in theatre on the Tuesday morning and the wound bandaged.

We spent the afternoon in A&E waiting for a slot in theatre. He had exploratory surgery for 3 hours late that evening and his Frame applied. The plastic surgeon told us that he had had the blood supply cut off to all of the skin from ankle to Knee and that he would need a free flap from his back and grafts from his thigh to cover the area. They suggested that there was a 90% chance of this being successful although this was only the second time they had attempted such a large area. Later someone told us that three years earlier he would have had his leg amputated. The frame was applied through good skin and is much longer than is usual and therefore perhaps a bit less stable than they would like. He had two blood transfusions one in each anaesthetic.

The following morning he went to theatre again for 9 hours. The surgeons spoke to us at 6pm to say that they were pleased with how it had gone. he was then in HDU for 5 days. For the first two days the nurses listened every 30 minutes to the blood flow through the flap. He had heart monitors, pulse monitors, an arterial line, a central line, two cannulas, his arm in a sling, a catheter and a bear hugger to keep his leg warm. Gradually all these things were taken away and most of the flap established well except for the extreme end of it.

We stayed in the Children's hospital for two weeks with daily physio and a further general anesthetic for a dressing change. My younger daughters found the long separation very hard. They did come to visit twice overnight.

Lots of people visited us in both hospitals and stayed in contact via various forms of social media - so much appreciated. My son listened to most of the Harry Potter audio books.

He had several nights in a row with nightmares in the hospital but had not had any since.

We then came home still with a wheelchair. The collar bone had healed but we were protecting the scar on his back. A week later he was allowed to start using crutches.

He had withdrawal symptoms when we stopped the Tramadol which was hard. But away from heavy doses of morphine he has mostly been in good spirits.

He is getting stronger very quickly now and is starting to weight bear. His flap and grafts are healing well and will always look strange but we are all getting used to seeing them for dressing changes.

He is ready to go back to school but we are waiting on risk assessments and planning which is frustrating. That frustration was my reason for not sleeping tonight but I have probably put that all into prospective for myself. The total time for healing should not exceed 6 months. The soft tissue injury will probably extend the bone healing time.

I have during this time fallen very far off the No S wagon and have gained around half a stone. I keep meaning to get back on habit but haven't had the determination. Perhaps after catching up with you all it will give me the boost I need.

First, so sorry to hear your son had to go through all that. And not just him, your whole family. I'm happy to hear that things are on the mend. Regarding No S, hey, either you're ready for a big test or you're not and there's no shame in it. Just get back on the horse as soon as you can with any gap between any meal and congratulate yourself profusely.

Oh my goodness, Nettee, how scary! I'm so glad your son is recovering well--truly amazing all that he's been through (and wow, scary to think just 3 years ago they would have amputated his leg?!). How wonderful that he has had such good care.

Thank you both. It was very scary indeed but we have come so far and he is doing so well.

I have found what could have been the hardest to deal with but small details have been making me so upset. Hospital staff calling him by his full name when it is always shortened, picking up his wheelchair and the staff being short with me just round the corner from where the accident happened, being in a cramped hospital bay when I couldn't see the window, the uncertainty of not knowing when we would be going home or when he can go back to school, the first day of term when he didn't go back, a colleague at work being upfront with me in a way that I interpreted as criticism.

I did actually complete 5 no s days in a row a couple of weeks ago so it can be done. I am just in the habit of eating sugar where it is available and it is so addictive.

I'm so sorry you're going through this! Poor little guy. Thank god he's ok. The body does have an amazing ability to heal. Especially when you're young.

Make sure you take care of yourself as well. I'm sure you've been in emergency mode, just doing the next thing that has to be done.

Please keep us posted on his progress.

Hello

My son has been back to school for a fortnight and I am feeling positive about no s today. Just had lunch - no snacks this morning despite work chocolate floating around.

It is now just over 2 months till Christmas, my clothes are tight and my weight is up to 11st 11.5lb. Time for action!

Hopefully will report back this evening with some good news

Hi Nettee,
I'm sorry to her of your son's accident. I hope things are beginning to settle down now. These kinds of experiences can leave us feeling so vulnerable and even anxious for a long time afterward.

Hope you no-s days help bring normalcy.

Kind regards,
Virginia

Thank you Virginia, you are right. We are just feeling able to take on new things now nearly three months after it happened.

Success for yesterday - all went smoothly. It is good to feel back to sanity or some sort of control. Also good to be hungry for meals. And I was 2lb down this morning which is always a good feeling.

Hello again. I’ve been completely off plan for ages but today have started a new version which is probably too different to be called no S but similar.

My plan is to stop eating sugar and snacks all the time but not worry about seconds. I rarely want seconds but it is nice to be able to have a starter when eating out etc.

I am working on the theory that sugar is addictive so a bit at the weekends won’t be good for breaking the habit.

It feels good to have some sanity back for my eating.

My son is hopefully having his frame off on Wednesday so a stressful week to start with but I feel positive that I will keep at it

Not all addictions are controlled by swearing off the substance. But if you really hate the pull sugar has on you, and never feel happy about having it, I say (and no one asked me) it makes plenty of sense to choose to skip it forever. It's been only a few hundred years that it's been available in the food supply to the masses. It isn't as if there aren't oodles of good food to eat without it.

I think No S is about a commitment to systematic moderation. If nixing sugar and snacks, but allowing seconds, makes that happen for you, so be it.

:)

My son’s leg is improving, thank goodness.

I was out in a bar but not drinking alcohol last night and foolishly had a coke. It was just down to peer pressure going on inside my own head. I need to make a plan for these situations. Otherwise all still going well.

Glad to hear your son is feeling a little less pain. That must be so hard to see your child in so much discomfort.

And, maybe this is just out of the question for you -- but maybe have a diet coke? Even if you don't think they are very good for you, it would just be an occasional thing..... now, if you just think it's gross, that's a different matter. :D

Diet Coke would definitely be the logical answer but I do think it’s gross! And Sweetners are probably bad for you too. To be honest I have gone off normal coke too so it was very silly. Sparkling water and lime? Although I hear they have now found that fizzy water makes you hungry.

Hooray - I seem to have lost 6 lb already. First few weeks and all that but it is good news. Also even better news is that I am just getting on with my plan without any problems and so far just two isolated slips with no going mad afterwards.

I have an aunt coming for tea this afternoon and wonder whether to offer her any snacks but not eat them myself - it would be weird maybe to do that. This is the disadvantage of not having S days.

I'd have a few exception cards in my back pocket, but that's just me. Maybe leave a snack sized gap on your lunch or dinner plate?

Yes I can honestly say that it is much easier without S days and I am sticking with it still without too much thought - really pleased. I have had some conversations with people on other diets this week and am so glad I am on this one. I am out to a three course dinner next week and intend to have cheese for course three and sail through without the need to call it an S event. So far so good.

I always think of them as S days even if they are S=free. I guess I get a kick out of feeling the freedom on not needing them even thoughI could have them, rather that I am not "taking" the S day. I always "take" the S day, even without the S's. Quirky or obsessive- who can say!

Weekends are harder for N days. After my last post I had a tricky weekend with seconds creeping into snacks. First mistake was a small lunc, always need to eat enough at each meal I think to stay on track. Anyway all has been ok again since Monday.

I have had some sugar cravings over the last few, premenstual, days. But I know that if I started down that road I would not really enjoy it and would eat so much I would feel sick so better not to start and to enjoy my three savoury meals. I have resisted.

Insightful about menstrual cravings., IMHO.

Gotta love that PFC! It's just about the only thing that can fight the limbic system. But it can take a lot of practice to win. It's an individual thing how the perception of that difficulty is.

I've looked only briefly at your recent history. You may have already commented on the progress you feel you've made over the last 9 or10 months, dodgy S days not withstanding. Any comments? or direct me to the related post.

So wonderful that you've hung in there!

Hello - Success for today. Finally.

I sat on the floor this morning feeling very hopeless and wondered what to do with myself. I am at my heaviest ever weight. I have been snacking and eating sweets with abandon for months. Decided to see if so could do just one S day and that is what I have done.

Let’s hope I can make the same decision tomorrow. I have been hungry today but enjoyed my meals and feel so much more positive this evening.

My son is so much better, it has been nearly s year since his accident when I fell off the wagon. I need to start looking after myself again.

So sorry to hear you have had a tough time.

One day is all it takes to turn it around. You've got this, you might have the occasional slip but it's what you do for 90% of the time that makes a difference.

Good luck

You don't have to do this alone :)

Have a great day, I'm rooting for you

I had a lot of those days of sitting on the floor wondering what was going to turn me around. No S seemed like such a good compromise. It still is.
