Skycat's daily check-in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Skycat's daily check-in

Post by Skycat » Wed Apr 12, 2017 5:07 am

Hi,

I'm hoping to use this as a sort of diary to both keep me on track, and prevent me boring my husband to death talking about it.

Firstly a little (or a lot) about me. I'm British but currently living in Germany teaching English as a second language to adults. Married with no children. Husband is very supportive of any diet I've tried and supportive of me at any weight.

I first started tackling my weight in 2008 with Slimming World which was very successful for me, but I moved away to an area where the group wasn't available.
Then I tried No S for about a year, really liked it as an approach but just sort of drifted away. (My username was Skykittybefore but now I'm more mature LOL)
After that I tried calorie counting and then 5:2. Both were successful but calorie counting is a pain in the arse and 5:2 takes way too much planning and effort.

So I'm back. I started my weight loss journey at 231 pounds. Got all the way down to 141 pounds and am now at 174 pounds.

What I want is to get back to 160 pounds. Even though I reached 141 pounds that's not my goal because that was fasting 3 days a week and I don't want that. I think that 160 pounds is far more achievable.

I'm reasonably active, hitting 10,000 steps a day on average and going to the gym a few times a week. However I always have chocolate after lunch and after dinner every day, and often snack although usually on rice cakes or nuts.

I'm hoping to be able to tackle my weight and stop it creeping back up, without losing my mind! Wish me luck!!!!
I CAN do this.

Best wishes, Skycat! Keeping off more than 50 pounds is a wonderful achievement in itself.

I'm always so impressed by the things people do to manage their weight. I found WW too little food-- I can't grok fasting 3 days a week. 14 lbs sounds very achievable.

Gratz on the supportive husband. It helps so much.

Welcome back. You certainly know how to be successful with a 90 lb. weight loss, even if you gained 30 back. The mental part of NoS is half the battle in my mind. 160 sounds very doable for you with just vanilla NoS and 10,000 steps a day. Good luck.

12th April check in

Post by Skycat » Thu Apr 13, 2017 5:06 am

Thanks Whosonfirst and Larkspur for the support - Pennsylvania must be a great state!!

So day one was a success!!

Breakfast - well breakfast is always the same for us. Always bircher muesli, prepared the night before with oats, milk, banana, raisins, seeds and some frozen berries. No junk, no processed sugar.

Lunch - 2 bread rolls with ham, cheese and tomato and an orange. I did put the orange on the plate when I prepared it.

Dinner - home-made indian koftas made of cauliflower, carrot and onion with a spicy tomato sauce and naan bread. All one plate. Also had one glass of wine after dinner.

Throughout the day my normal drinks are tea with milk (very British), fruit and herbal teas, sparkling water with lemon/lime juice and diet coke

Also 5,300 steps and 40 minutes in the gym.

One of the real benefits of No S for me is I really enjoy cooking and I have a number of recipe books. This diet doesn't restrict what I can cook.

The biggest challenge was not eating my usual small amount of chocolate after lunch and dinner, it's usually around 90 cals each time which doesn't feel like much but No S will cut out 900 cals not having that Mon-Fri.
I CAN do this.

Day 2 - SUCCESS

Breakfast - Bircher muesli as usual

Lunch - bread rolls with ham, cheese and tomato and an orange (again)

Dinner - pea and leek risotto and a glass of wine.

Plus 16,000 steps

Larkspur - yes, I do feel pretty good physically, I'm able to be active after a number of minor injuries this year mostly due to my own clumsiness. I've never been skinny so I'm not looking for a huge weight-loss but I see my weight creeping back up slowly and I want to avoid sleepwalking back to my heavier weight.
I CAN do this.

Day 3 -SUCCESS

B - Usual bircher muesli

L- Usual bread rolls with ham, cheese, tomato and an orange.

D - A baked sweet potato with home-made guacamole and chipotle kidney beans.

Steps- 8,500

First S day today. Don't have anything specific planned. Am going to the cinema, where I would usually share a bag of crisps with my husband, but this time we're going to see different films so that won't be possible, and I love crisps they are a real treat (or weak spot) but I don't want a whole bag because they're huge!

First S day is done.

B - Bircher muesli

L - quinoa salad with grapes and almonds

D - steak sandwich with cheese and rocket and chipotle mayo, yum. And a glass of wine

S treats - a handful of plain peanuts, a mini chocolate bar and a sugar-free sweet(which may be sugar-free but it's definitely a sweet so I wouldn't have one on N days).

It felt like quite a tame S day, but the first of three as I'm taking Easter Monday as an S day, so tame is good.

Big victory, which I'm very proud of. My steak sandwich in the restaurant came with fries, I ate 3 fries decided they were pretty average, not bad but not great, and dumped them all on my husband's plate (very quickly before I could change my mind). So I ate the sandwich, which was certainly big enough and not the fries. This had the added bonus that he was so full he didn't buy any snacks in the cinema afterwards, which made it easy for me not to buy any either.

Steps - 12,000
I CAN do this.

Easter Sunday

B - bubble and squeak with brown sauce and fried eggs. And an orange

L - 2 bread rolls with ham and, fried eggs. And grapes

D - 2 wraps filled with aubergine and kidney bean chili and guacamole. And 2 glasses of wine

S day treats - a mini chocolate bar (72cals), a banana as a snack in the afternoon when I got home from the gym and the flat was filled with the lovely smell of my husband making chili, and an ice-cream snickers bar. That was my biggest S day treat the one I'd really been looking forward to and I really enjoyed every bite.

Steps - 7,000 plus 30mins in the gym.
I CAN do this.

Easter Monday S Day

B - French toast with maple syrup, raspberries and blueberries. And an orange

L - 2 bread rolls with ham and cucumber

D - potatoes, sugarsnap peas, carrots and tofu with a satay sauce. And a glass of wine.

S day treats-
seconds of french toast, plus the maple syrup definitely a S day treat.
2 mini chocolate bars
2 sugarfree candies
a slice of brioche, toasted with butter

Steps - 1,500

Looking at the week ahead I can see two definite danger spots. Firstly dinner out with friends on Wednesday evening and secondly a few friends coming over for dinner on Friday.
Wednesday should be OK because we rarely have starters or dessert, the biggest challenge will be staying out of the bread basket.
Friday, I have planned to make a fruit salad with a chocolate/caramel sauce. My own mod is fruit is OK, so I just need to keep the sauce of it ad I'll be fine. If I can keep the sauce off my portion.
I CAN do this.

Good luck with your socialising this week! It can be tricky to resist when you're eating with friends but I have found that if I just quietly get on with it, no one really notices or cares! Its great that NoS doesn't mean a whole load of 'oh no I can't eat carbs' or 'hang on I'll just add up my calories/grams of fat/whatever'.
I hope you have a lovely time :)

Thanks Bluebell, I'll keep that in mind especially for Friday, maybe I can just put fruit on my plate and keep chatting and not make a big deal of not taking the sweet part and they won't even notice.

Tuesday - SUCCESS

B - Bircher muesli

L - 2 bread rolls with ham, cheese and cucumber, 2 mandarins.

D - Vegetable biryani. And a glass of wine.

Steps - 10,500

I have to admit, the glass of wine every evening is REALLY helping keep the temptation of dessert under control.
I CAN do this.

Thanks Larkspur :) Sometimes I think I should vary up my lunch a bit, but I think I'll leave it a while before I make any changes.

Wednesday - SUCCESS

B - Bircher muesli

L - 2 Bread rolls with ham, cheese and cucumber, 2 mandarins.

D - Schnitzel with a gorgonzola sauce, baked potato and salad. Plus wine maybe 4 glasses, as I was out for a very sociable meal.

Steps - 8,500 plus 30 mins at the gym.
I CAN do this.

Thursday - SUCCESS

B - Bircher muesli

L - 2 bread rolls with ham, cheese and cucumber. 2 mandarins and an apple

D - Spaghetti with artichokes. And a glass of wine.
It was actually supposed to be a carbonara with mushrooms instead of bacon, but the mushrooms had gone bad already and the shops were closed, so the only vegetable I had to use instead was some artichokes in a jar. Worked pretty well actually.

Steps - 14,000
I CAN do this.

Friday - SUCCESS

B - Bircher muesli

L - Roast potatoes and turkey with salad leaves. And 2 mandarins

D - Falafel and halloumi with salad and a pita bread. And the equivalent of a glass of wine. And a bowl of strawberries and banana.

I weighed this morning and am 0.5 lb UP. I'm not too down about this for several reasons. Firstly, yesterday was not a great day eve though I count it technically as a green day. I think the potatoes and turkey were cooked with a bit more oil than I would have liked, at dinner I had way too much halloumi and didn't stop eating when I knew I should have, and instead of wine I had a glass of a very sugary, low alcoholic drink which a friend had brought over.
But I stuck to the three plates and that is important to me.

Saturday S DAY

B - Bircher muesli

L - Burger and chips

D - Chicken salad bagel (but the chicken was coated and probably fried so not as healthy as it sounds)

S Dy treats - 2 cookies during coffee break at a workshop and a chocolate tart.

Steps - 9,000
I CAN do this.

Sunday - S DAY

B - Pancakes with strawberries and maple syrup

L - 2 bread rolls with ham and fried eggs.

D - Pad Thai with tofu

S day treats - leftover chocolate caramel sauce from Friday which I saved instead of having on Friday. 3 mini chocolate bars. (approx 80 cals each)

Steps - 13,000

Looking at the week ahead, it will be my first full 5 N day week since restarting.

The biggest challenge will be a breakfast with friends on Friday which will be a buffet. But I have to leave early anyway for work, so fingers crossed, I can fill my one plate with the things I really want and then eat really slowly so I'm not tempted by seconds. I think I can avoid going for seconds if I can see that my plate is not empty yet, so if I eat slowly, leave like a corner of bread on there and distract myself with conversation and tea, I can avoid a second helping from the buffet. That's my plan anyway....

Your reflections on what you need to do sound good. I gently suggest talking only to us about all this. I think our cultures have gotten too caught up in such talk, esp. around meals, which I think ruins them. I say the only appropriate food talk at a meal is how good the food is, and that can go on only so long. There's got to be something else to talk about! Makes us see that it's life in between meals where the real stuff happens.

Yes Oolalathat's such a great point and I totally agree. That's what I plan to do at breakfast on Friday. It worked so well on Friday evening with the yummy chocolate caramel sauce that I made. I just filled my bowl with fruit and carried on talking and eating and ignored the sauce completely without saying anything. Another friend turned down the sauce and said he was watching his weight, he then spent 5 minutes arguing against others who insisted he should have some. While I sat there in peace eating my fruit!

Coming and saying my piece here instead, keeps me sane.

Tuesday - GREEN

B - Bircher muesli

L- 2 bread rolls with ham, cheese and lettuce. And 2 mandarins.

Before dinner - - About 4 strawberries.

D - Spiced rice with lentils, fried onions and aubergine. And a glass of wine.

Steps - 10,500

I don't count the strawberries as a fail because my mod is fruit is allowed at any time. But it has to be proper, whole, fresh fruit - dried, juice and smoothies are only allowed at mealtimes on N days.

I actually turned to my husband halfway through dinner and commented that I'd made rice with aubergine 2 days in a row. Although actually Monday was a vaguely Spanish jambalaya with peppers and lots of paprika, and today was more Middle-Eastern with lots of cumin and coriander!

I got a chocolate egg yesterday, the only one I got over the whole of Easter! A small, egg-sized one, I don't know who it was from as it was in my tray at work and I don't know my colleagues very well. So now it's in the fridge waiting for Saturday.

B - Bircher muesli

L - 2 bread rolls filled with egg mayonnaise. And blueberries and a glass of apple juice

D - Pasta with roast peppers, courgette and red onions. And a glass of wine.

Steps - 15,500 plus 40 minutes in the gym

Quite unpleasant experience last night which almost derailed me. I teach an evening class twice a week and there is an old-fashioned blackboard. I dislike this and much prefer using a whiteboard generally, but somehow I managed to get chalk or chalk dust on my lips. Never get chalk on your lips! So the chalk would make my lips feel really, really dry causing an irresistible urge to lick them, then giving me a nasty taste in my mouth. 2 minutes later they would be dry and I would have to lick them again. No amount of water I drank made this go away. If it weren't for No S I think I would have eaten a ton of chocolate to try to replace the bad taste with a good one. Instead I just brushed my teeth about 20 times when I got home.

Now I have a square of chocolate to add to the chocolate egg in my fridge waiting for Saturday. One of the girls at rehearsal for our theatre group was sharing some out. I took a piece to be sociable, put it down on the table for a second, then stashed it in my bag while she wasn't looking.

Well it's possible that my iphone is being generous with my step count, but that's all I have to measure it. For example that 13,000 was apparently 5miles and consisted of:
30 mins walk to work
40 mins walk home from work (with a slight detour to run an errand)
20 mins walk in the afternoon (just around the block to clear my head)
rehearsal in the evening, which wasn't very active but my phone was still in my pocket.

To be honest I live in the perfect location for walking. Depending on which direction I go in:
30 mins to work
15 mins from the city centre
15 mins from the gym
10 mins from beautiful (but steep) vineyards to walk in
10 mins from very nice allotments to walk/jog round.

Friday - SUCCESS

B - Was the buffet I had been nervous about. I had 4 pieces of baguette, some mozzarella and tomato salad and some ham.

L - A sausage in a bread roll. And a grapefruit
I know this might sound like a hotdog, but the German version has (I believe) better quality sausage, being a real bratwurst rather than a hotdog sausage, and a small freshly baked roll rather than a hotdog bun.

D - Roast cauliflower with black rice and a Mexican mole sauce. And 3 glasses of sparkling wine.

Steps - 8,000
I CAN do this.

Wow I'm jealous of your walkable neighborhood! Great job on the buffet and a bratwurst beats a regular ol hotdog any day in my book.

I don't think anyone was doubting your steps. But I am impressed that you'd walk 15 minutes to get to the gym. I probably wouldn't do that after walking to and from work.

And even if it had been a hotdog, you would have been compliant!

Where did you get roasted cauliflower and black rice? (There should be an emoticon here for yum.)

I didn't think anyone doubted me, it's more that I doubt technology :D

I bought the black rice in a health food shop and roasted the cauliflower myself, it doesn't need much oil, and is so much tastier than boiling or steaming cauliflower.

Saturday - S DAY The most S, S day I've had so far!

B - Bircher muesli

L - Home-made egg fried rice with sugarsnap peas and tofu

Mid Afternoon - Apple and a few grapes.

Dinner - Curried lentils with naan bread.

After dinner - some strawberries

S Day treats - A 100g pack of corn chips, the small chocolate egg and square of chocolate I was given during the week and saved and a snickers ice-cream bar. Quite a heavy S day for me. The corn chips in particular are something I usually avoid because crisps/chips have always been my kryptonite food and have been the food I binged on regularly in the past.

Although the naan bread with dinner was delicious I didn't eat all of it, which was a really good step for me. Many times I would have finished it even though I was full, just because I was enjoying the taste. So I was pleased about that.

Steps - 7,500 plus 30 mins in the gym
I CAN do this.

As much as I love chocolate, Fritos corn chips are addictive. Best if we don't keep any in the cupboards.

Sunday - S Day

B - Bircher muesli

L - Pork schnitzel with salad and half a portion of fries (husband had the other half) And a glass of wine

Mid afternoon - strawberries and an orange

D - Broad beans with garlic and eggs, with bread and butter. And a glass of wine

S day treats - a handful of mixed nuts and raisins. 3 mini chocolate bars. A small glass of toffee liquer.

Steps - 17,000

I notice that I always find myself needing that last extra bit of chocolate right before bed on a Sunday, I seem to feel I need it to get through the week. Hopefully this will stop naturaly over time.

Monday - GREEN

B - two slices of toast with mashed avocado

Mid-morning - banana (mod)

L - 2 bread rolls with ham and fried eggs. An orange.

Mid-afternoon - grapes

D - One third of a bowl of chowder, two bread rolls, one slice of cheese. A glass of wine.

Steps - 2,500

My mod to No S is that fruit is allowed at any time. I try to keep it to mealtimes to avoid snacking, but yesterday was a tough day, I think it was because I was out of my usual routine. The whole day felt like a Sunday because of the bank holiday, which meant that I wanted to eat like a Sunday. It was the first day I really struggled, so to keep within vanilla with my one mod, was good for me.

Wednesday - GREEN

B - Bircher muesli

L - 2 bread rolls with ham and light cream cheese. An apple and some grapes

D - Doner kebab. Three glasses of wine.

The kebab was because I met some friends after work and only had around 15 minutes to eat as we wanted to get to a local pub quiz. The options were that, or McDonalds.

The funny thing is that back home in the UK I would feel so embarrassed about having a doner kebab for dinner because they are generally rubbish food and so unhealthy. But here, because of higher levels of immigration from Turkey, the kebabs and Turkish food in general is much better quality and much healthier. So it feels fine. Also it was an N day meal, one plate.

Like silk, I'm also impressed with your S days! I have my first one tomorrow and would like to keep it moderate. I run Sunday mornings and don't do well on a lot of junk.

Loved reading your check ins and very impressed by the 90 lbs weight loss!

Aww thanks Ramy and Silk001. I think for me one of the most important things about S days is to think in terms of S day treats. It's not enough that something is sweet or a snack, it really has to be a treat. It has to be good enough to be worthy of being eaten. That helps keep me moderate. The other thing that helps keep me moderate is posting my S days as well as my N days. I know whatever I eat will be listed in black and white.

Friday - SUCCESS

B - Bircher muesli

L - 2 bread rolls with ham. And some strawberries.

D - Baked sweet potato with sauteed leeks, light cream cheese and tomatoes cooked down into a sauce/jam. And 2 glasses of wine.

The funny thing about dinner is that it came from a dream I had a few nights ago about cooking that exact meal. So I decided it might be my one chance to really make a dream come true! (although in the dream I was cooking it for a friend who's actually not in the same country so that wasn't the same) My husband said the potato, leek and cheese were great but the tomato was weird with it, although he ate the tomato too so I'm considering dream meal cooking to be a success.

Saturday - S Day

B - Bircher muesli

L - Pasta with broccoli sauce, courgette, basil and pine nuts. And an orange.

Mid-afternoon - some strawberries

D - Quinoa salad with prawns. Two glasses of wine

S Day Treats - 3 spoonfuls of my husband's yoghurt, a handful of my husband's fries (hmm, seeing a food theft theme here), 3 mini chocolate bars and a mini ice-cream magnum.

Steps - 9,000 plus 30 mins in the gym

Very, very happy because I've had bad reactions recently to both crab and scallops, so the prawns were a test to see if I could eat them or if they would also cause 4 straight hours of vomiting like the other shellfish. Passed with flying colours, so I feel safe to eat prawns again!

Sunday - S Day

B - Porridge

Mid-morning - banana

L - 2 bread rolls with sausage and egg. An orange

D - Fladenbrot, which is similar to a pizza with a Turkish bread base. It was topped with mozzarella, sliced tomato ad basil pesto. And a glass of wine.

S Day Treats - seconds of porridge at breakfast, 2 mini chocolate bars, a small handful of mixed nuts, one mouthful of my husband's apple strudel and 3 squares of Lindt chocolate.

Steps - 7,000 plus 30 minutes in the gym

Looking ahead I'm hoping for a full green week, I don't expect any huge challenges. Fingers crossed, I'm right about this.....

Skycat,

Great news on the shellfish! I love all fish and shellfish so would be so sad to be allergic. Your S days sound very manageable and not over the top. I may try planning my treats ahead of time. Sundays are typically my worst day.

Good luck this week!

Regarding the S days, the only S treats I really keep in the house are the mini chocolate bars and the ice-cream bars, which live in the freezer so they are out of sight and out of mind. It helps that I control the food shop and my husband has (mostly) given up all sweet food since a diagnosis of type II diabestes.

Monday -SUCCESS

B - Porridge and fresh berries

L - 2 Bread rolls with ham and cheese. A banana

D - Pasta with tomato sauce and wild garlic. An orange and a glass of wine.

Steps - 13,000 plus 30 mins in the gym.

After being so confident about a green week, I then got an invitation to a birthday celebration on Friday. I thought for a moment about turning down the invitation as it would be so hard to stay green, particularly as alcohol tends to lead to bad decisions when it's more than one glass. But I decided to pull my socks up and go, and the universe rewarded me for not being a coward. Two hours later I got another message, it's been moved to Saturday. Now Saturday will be very busy as we have two birthday celebrations back to back but I should be able to keep my green week.

I expect to be posting a much wilder S day/days next weekend :D

I was offered chocolate at rehearsal again. Took a piece and stashed it in my bag, it's now in the fridge for tomorrow. Was also offered biscuits but they were mint flavoured. Mint biscuits seemed weird to me, which was great as it meant I wasn't even tempted.

Friday - SUCCESS

B - Bircher muesli

L - one bread roll and two slices of onion frittata. An orange

D - Savoury pancakes with pickled vegetables and dipping sauces (2 and a half pancakes) and 2 glasses of wine.

The pancakes were difficult to 'one plate' because when I put them on the plate they are flat and one pancake takes up the whole plate but of course they are meant to be filled and rolled, so I decided I would have 3 at the most. In the end though I could only manage 2 and a half.

Steps - 10,500

Saturday is my scales day. I have lost no weight and am the same weight as when I started. However I think it was because yesterday's meals were big. I have a history of weighing myself very frequently and I know how much just one day of heavy eating can affect the scale.

I am choosing not to care. I cannot control the scales. I can only control my actions. While I am on No S, my eating actions are good. Therefore I am doing what I can, I cannot control the output (number on scale) only the input and regardless of the output I still feel good about the input. So there! (blows raspberry and makes face at silly scale)

Saturday - S day

B - Bircher muesli

After breakfast 5km run

After that the wheels came off....
Two birthday parties, one in the afternoon, another in the evening. Fried food, snack food, cake and alcohol. I ate too much, it was all unhealthy, it was constant grazing and in an effort not to drink too much alcohol I ended up dehydrated. Getting home in the evening I felt terrible and ended up having tea and toast to try and right myself again. It helped but I still feel crap this morning. At least it won't happen often!!

Sunday - S Day

B - Scrambled eggs on toast with onions, peppers and cheese. Strawberries

L - 2 bread rolls with ham and tomato.

Mid afternoon - A glass of wine. Grapes

D - Onion soup with two slices of cheese on toast. An orange

S Day treats - An ice cream snickers, 3 mini chocolate bars

There was birthday cake at rehearsal, but it didn't look tempting enough so I didn't have any.

Steps - 4,000 plus 300 min workout at home following an app.

Looking to the week ahead. This week I'm going to swap my S days around and take Thursday and Sunday. I'm going to a restaurant on Thursday which will be impossible to make S-compliant. It's all you can eat, but not a buffet where I could fill one plate. You order lots of little dishes tapas style, I don't think I could virtual plate successfully so I will switch an S day from Saturday to Thursday.

B - Bircher muesli

L - Couscous with roasted veg

D - Black lentil dal with naan bread. Grapes and a glass of wine.

Steps - 13,000 plus 30 minutes in the gym

I'm going to try a small new tweak in my diet, to not have bread more than once a day during the week. So days I'm having bread in the evening I'll have something different for lunch. I love bread, and I know I'm not gluten intolerant, it's more to make sure I get a variety of carbohydrate sources. I would happily eat bread for every single meal, but I have to accept that's not the healthiest way to go.

3.30am - Apple. I was hit by insomnia, sometimes eating helps me get back to sleep. It was either toast or an apple, but as I consider fruit to be an acceptable (to me) No S mod, I had an apple so I could still post a green day.

Today is an S day (yay!!) as I'm going out for dinner this evening and know I won't be able to have one plate at this restaurant, it's all lots of tiny dishes to share.

Thursday - S Day

B - Bircher muesli

L - 2 bread rolls with ham, cheese and tomato. An orange

D - Out at a Japanese restaurant, lots of food! 3 glasses of wine.

S Day treats - 3 mini chocolate bars, yoghurt mid-afternoon, dessert at the restaurant.

Steps - 14,000

I swapped my S days because of this meal at the Japanese restaurant, which was lovely. I wasn't too worried about taking an N day on Saturday because of a workshop I was attending which meant an almost 4 hr bus trip each way, therefore reducing the possibility to fail as my access to snacks would be limited. Unfortunately now the workshop is cancelled, so I am now hugely worried about an N day when my mind and body will be telling me it's OK to eat because it's a Saturday. Arghhh, this will be tough.

If I may say, it's not advisable to swap N days and S days intermittently. One doesn't have to eat any S's for an S day to be an S day; it doesn't make it an N day just because you choose not to have any S's. That invites a kind of bargaining that can become risky. As time goes on, there will be many S days with little or no S's, but it doesn't mean one should take other S days during the week. But your Japanese meal can be a wonderful NWS day event. (2 allowed a month.)

Of course, it's your call. If I'm repeating myself, or ignoring a previous plan of yours to try this out, I bow out. :)

I always welcome advice Oolala, especially from someone whose advice I have often read and agreed with before.

I guess the reason I swapped the S day from Saturday to Thursday was because I knew otherwise it would definitely be an N day fail, and who doesn't want to avoid rd days if they can? The reason I didn't choose to take it as a NWS was because it just didn't seem special enough, maybe I'm not clear on the general thinking behind NWS days/events. It's not a holiday, or someone's birthday or even really a special event, I see this group of friends for dinner every month and can usually be N compliant it was just the style of the restaurant that was incompatible with No S. Do you think, in the future, this would be a good reason to take a NWS? So far I've only taken one since I restarted.

If it's not important enough to declare a NWS day, it's probably not worth "trading" a weekend day, either. Ideally, NWS days are reserved for the truly special, but it's your call. If you have nothing else going on this month an it will keep you feeling like you can accommodate life, it's an option. But it's also often worth trying to see if you can fit those things into the structure and still feel like you are celebrating. That can be by having something extra special on your non-sweet plate, or a beverage, or slightly virtual-plating, or just paying extra attention to the ambience and celebratory nature of the company and event.

If you want to change your S days for a month to try it out, that's an option, but trading out S days and N days on an ad hoc basis is too much like calorie balancing for MOST people. (A few exceptional people make split S days work, but in my years here, I've seen it fail much more often and people end up saying Vanilla is better. But maybe that process helps firm up resolve.)

Food for though Oolala definitely. I think my automatic switching of days as a solution probably came from my six months on 5:2, with that plan you just choose week by week which days you'll diet for. Ordinarily I would have accommodated an N day eating out, the fact that, that's possible is one of the reasons I love this plan, unfortunately as I said, I'd been to this restaurant before and already knew that wouldn't be an option.

Anyway, so that left me on an N day on Saturday, and late Friday evening my husband announced that he would make doughnuts, as my workshop had been cancelled.

So I will take one doughnut for one S event and be N the rest of the day, I'm certainly not going to reject my husband's baking.

Friday - Success

B - Bircher muesli

L - Pasta with spicy tomato sauce

Mid-afternoon - Fresh berries (mod)

D - Paella. Banana with a spoonful of peanut butter. 2 Glasses of wine.

It turned out to be quite a busy day, so my husband decided not to make doughnuts after all. I was not disappointed to be able to keep to a green day. I did use my fruit at any time mod, partly because the berries from the market turned out to be a bit manky, and probably wouldn't have kept very well. Still happy with the day though. On balance I think I made the right decision to swap the S day from Saturday to Thursday, but I will avoid doing it unless it is absolutely necessary, not a mod I will choose lightly.

Tuesday - SUCCESS

B - 2 slices of toast with honey. A banana

L - Egg fried rice with fennel and onion. An orange

D - Pasta with broccoli, tomato and asparagus. A glass of wine

Steps - 9,500

Today I strayed from my usual breakfast, and regretted it. I was so much hungrier this morning than I usually am. I love toast. I always have, it's my number one comfort food, and really any excuse food. But now I wonder whether it's the reason I always snacked so much, because I really noticed today how it wasn't filling enough for me. Interesting....

B - Bircher muesli

L - 2 Bread rolls with ham and cucumber. Raspberries

D - Cauliflower curry with most of a naan bread (was very pleased with myself when I actually did stop when I was full and give the rest to my husband to finish off)
2 and a half glasses of Sekt and half a glass of wine. A grapefruit

Steps - 10,000

Looking to the week ahead. We have visitors arriving today, I'm so excited, our best friends and their 3 sons who are our godsons and seeing as we don't have children ourselves, they are the closest thing to our own kids. Since we moved away we've seen them so little, and they are staying (in a flat nearby because our place can't fit an extra 5 people). So I will try to stick to No S on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday while they are here, but if I do have red days, I think I will be ok with it

B - Bircher muesli

L - Flammkuchen (German thing, like a pizza with a really thin base and sour cream instead of the cheese and the tomato sauce)

D - Noodles with broccoli and sugar-snap peas. A glass of wine

S Day treats - several boiled sweets, about six squares of chocolate. 2 slices of toast with honey before bed as I was really hungry - I'm not used to cooking for 6 people and underestimated my portions so my bowl of noodles was really small.

Steps - 5,000

Feeling bad is part of the cycle, meaning it reinforces the habit. Do your best to keep focused on the cruddy physical feelings and not the self-recrimination. You can't avoid the physical stuff; you just have to wait until the body recovers. But you can try to let go mentally quickly. "It's unfortunate, but it's over now. I'll do better next time." Then try to look for something positive in your day, not necessarily to do with eating.

You have two chances for green this week, the first two days in June. Yippee!

Thanks Oolala.

This week has been great, and stressful at the same time. My best friends visiting with their kids, who I adore, has been amazing. On the other hand, I'm not used to having kids around and it's been exhausting. Then they left and that was really emotional - hence binging I think.

I was torn between having dinner, to get back on track, after my binge, and not having dinner because frankly I'd eaten more than enough food.

So I sat down with my dinner, which was pasta and ate about a third of the dish. Enough to feel like I was heading back to my normal routine. Need a better day today, fingers crossed.....

B - Bircher muesli
L - 2 bread rolls with egg and tomato. An apple
D - Smoked salmon with potato rosti and salad. 2 glasses of wine

Steps - 14,000

We ate out with friends for dinner, I was the only one at the table not to order dessert, and surprisingly I didn't care. I just sat and chatted and ignored their dessert plates. Big win for me.

Saturday - S Day

B - Bircher muesli
L-Pasta with roasted veg and pine nuts
D - Barbecue and salad buffet. Lots of wine, the BBQ was at a wine tasting event!

Steps - 12,500 plus 30 mins in the gym

S Day treats - chocolate cereal bar, 2 mini chocolate bars and a second plate from the buffet at dinner.

Oolala, I really did enjoy it. I was lucky that there was no bread basket, nobody had a starter and there were no desserts I really craved. It was a good meal.

Sunday - S Day

B - Refried beans on toast with egg and avocado, and two small oranges

L - 2 bread rolls with sausage and egg. 2 small oranges

D - Mushroom and pea curry with naan bread. A glass of wine

S Day treats - a chocolate cereal bar, a mini chocolate bar, a magnum mini ice cream.

Steps - 7,500 plus 30 minutes in the gym.

Looking at the week ahead. I'm planning to take a NWS day on Friday. It's a combination of, I'm planning to be up basically all night watching the general election results come in, hubby has the day off work for the same reason, and there's a friend's birthday in the evening. Apart from that, I don't anticipate any problems. Fingers crossed

Monday - SUCCESS

B - Bircher muesli
L - Mushroom pate and gherkins with pita breads. 2 small oranges.
D - Potato rosti with smoked salmon and salad. (recreating a lovely meal I had in a restaurant last week) Grapes. A glass of wine.

Steps - 8,500 including a 5km jog.

Biggest success of the day, it was a bank holiday here and I didn't need to use my fruit snack mod. I had fruit as part of the meal instead of between. That's what I aim for, to use the mod as little as possible - it's the first time I've done it on an N day which was also a public holiday. Even though I was really hungry in the hour or two before eating lunch and dinner.

TUESDAY - SUCCESS

B - Bircher muesli
L - 2 bread rolls with ham and cheese. Grapes.
D - Home-made onion bhajis, a few mouthfuls of curry, a bread roll with ham and tomato. 2 small oranges. A glass of wine.

Steps - 3,000 (raining so didn't walk to work)

Dinner wasn't all on one plate because part of it was unplanned, unfortunately that was because the curry I made tasted awful, either the recipe or myself added too much lemon juice and the overwhelming lemon flavour made it inedible. Which was why I then had the bread roll. But as it wasn't extra food as a snack, or seconds or giving into temptation - rather, it was a replacement, I'm counting the day as green. I failed at cooking not No S.

Friday - S Day

I decided Friday would be a NWS day and I have to say I grazed all day, starting at midnight - as I was up watching the election results. Then in the evening I had a friend's birthday to go to.

The day included:
toast with butter
lots of fruit
crackers
2 mini chocolate bars
hummus and guacamole with more crackers and buffet finger food
1 chocolate muffin
Quite a bit of wine

Lots of grazing but no real binge, so I'm feeling okay with it

Steps - 9,500
:D :D

Saturday - S Day

B - Bircher muesli
L - Wraps with egg, guacamole, hummus and ham. Grapes
D - Asian-style noodles with broccoli. An apple. 2 Glasses of wine.

S day treats - a mini chocolate bar, crackers as a snack, a chocolate cereal bar, an ice cream snickers

Election results - well it's complicated. Could have turned out better, could have turned out worse. I'm relieved not to have the mess of changing government just before Brexit negotiations start and there are a lot of the hard left policies I don't agree with. I'm also pleased to see the labour party get much stronger, hopefully they can have a positive influence on increasing spending on education, healthcare, policing etc. Also great to see such a high youth turnout. Not happy on the other hand about an alliance with the very right-wing DUP, although given the electoral math at the end of the day I'm not sure there was a viable alternative. It's complicated :?

Sunday - S Day

B - Pancakes and a banana and strawberry smoothie
L - Toast, fried eggs, tomatoes and mushroom. An orange
D - Flatbread with tomato and rocket

S Day treats - a chocolate cereal bar, about 5 squares of chocolate.

Steps - 9,500

Week ahead - We've got final rehearsal and opening performance for the play with my amateur theatre group. This will mean lots of temptation as loads of people bring snacks and sweet things to share backstage. If I maintain my willpower, I can do it (I hope)

Monday - SUCCESS

B - Bircher muesli
L - Lentil stew with bread. Peaches and grapes
D - 2 bread rolls with ham and cucumber. An orange and an apple

Steps - 7,000

I was extremely lucky that there weren't many snacks backstage. I was unusually hungry mid-afternoon, so I ended up eating my dinner at 4.30pm. As there weren't loads of snacks I did manage to just drink iced tea and diet coke in the evening and have a green day (I was like one of those kids in school who's eaten their entire packed lunch by 9.30 am then complains they're hungry at lunchtime.) :D
