Jen's checkin thread

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Back at 174 today. I will try to get a walk in at lunchtime today. It will be good for my brain, too, as I am up to my ears in grant work on short deadlines. Having a moment midday to clear my head sometimes makes me more efficient.

Re: fried foods. What YOU may not be able to do, and there is no shame in this, is eat little enough of those foods to lose weight and feel happy about it, at least for now. It may take enough effort that it could be as valuable just to expand the repertoire of enjoyable meals and practice intermittently on fried stuff. In fact, that may contribute as much to being satisfied with less as anything.

I would have gotten to a non-overweight BMI a lot faster if I had been happy with a few small servings of S's on S days, but I was never a happy camper when I even tried to do that for the first couple of years. I wanted more sweets most of the time, no matter what I may have said at the time. (I think I was pretty honest, though, about my overages.) And even after positive experiments, there was lots of rebound. I would have some weekends on which I went with my hunger, which was very low, and not fun to cooperate with- I would get just plain TIRED of waiting to be hungry, it would go on so long- and the next week, back to my 20 oz. of milk chocolate. I'm not saying that was causation or correlation or anything. But it did happen.

It's all up to you what you want to experiment with.

I regret that I didn't push myself to exercise more this whole time, but not because it would have caused more weight loss. The evidence for that is quite slim while the adherents are not, despite the infomercials. I read a report once of a woman who was a candidate for a before-and-after for one of them and she said everyone was starving themselves to be chosen. But exercise has so many other benefits! It's second only to quitting smoking for improving chances for long term health. And it's what a person does in middle age that has the biggest effect on the senior years. Alas for me. I am enjoying the changes I've made, but it's likely they won't make as much of an impact as having been prudent 25 years ago would have been. Of course, my senior years were very low on the motivation scale then, just as it's almost impossible to convince college girls that they're going to be sorry when they're 30 that they messed with their eating so much in their youth.

BTW, I'm doing about 5 minutes consistently now. Injury is really putting a dent in my walking activity. Get up while you can! Rah rah rah!

Is it working? Prolly not.

Here's a piece on the sad news about exercise for weight loss.

https://www.sciencealert.com/the-scienc ... uch-weight

But I think there's evidence that exercise is effective for loss maintenance. So you might as well get in the habit now. And you'll very likely feel peppier.

I do love running, oolala! I've got that going for me. But I need to make the time and get a routine going again. I am coming up on school vacation, and I know I'll get lots of exercise next week - some runs and some hikes and horseback riding.

I know from personal experience that running a lot does not equal weight loss. I used to joke that I was doing research for a book called "How to Stay Plump Despite Exercise". One year I ran 600 miles and gained weight.

I'm back from a week of vacation. I did not try to keep the habits on vacation. Starting fresh again today, back at 177.5. We were in Arizona, and I ate a lot of delicious Mexican food, including the chips, appetizers, the whole shebang.

Not sure why, maybe just getting over fatigue/fluid from being on the red eye this weekend, but in theory I dropped 3 lbs overnight. 174.5 this morning.

Another good argument for worrying about habits, not weight.

Yesterday was a fail, but a small one. We got a package of fresh hamantachen for Purim from my sorta-MIL, and yes, I ate them. But I adjusted my dinner to a smaller quantity, and I don't feel that I overate.

I might’ve spelled that wrong. I’m not Jewish, but my boyfriend is. They are little, triangle shaped pastries with filling of apricot or sesame or fig. They are supposed to look like the hat of a bad guy from the Purim story.

It is so easy to slip up once one starts.
Mon - fail - hamantachen
Tues - fail - cake at my board meeting (goodbye party)
Wed - fail - seconds at dinner

Today - green so far - although all of these fails happened at 5:00 or later, so stay tuned. I think today is the day I get back up on the balance beam.

173.5 today.

Friday was red - we went out to eat and I had dessert.
Today (Monday) green.
I have been sick for a week, but just a cold. Not the kind of sick where I need to eat differently. I did make myself some chicken broth as a drink yesterday.

172 today. I am now back where I was a month ago. Oh well. Maintenance is so much better than gaining. Today I had that good moment at a coffee shop where even though I looked at the pastries, it was just curiosity about whether they looked good enough for a weekend splurge (no, they didn't).

weight and shame

Post by jenji » Thu Mar 08, 2018 9:44 pm

I remember being in my 30s, and my weight at the time hovered around 150-155 lbs. I was ashamed of that number and my body. Looking back, I had no models of what normal weight should be for my height. I only heard about the weight of models (clearly underweight) and runners (same).

I like to read Runner's World, because I've been a runner all my life. If they mention a runner's weight, she would invariably be 30 lbs lighter than I was, and trying to lose weight to boot, because lighter is faster. Luckily I was never a competitive runner, just a middle of the pack person, so I did not fall into the eating disorder trap.

Also at the time, I remember the Bridget Jones' diary was popular, and Bridget's fat weight (125-130 lbs as I recall) was so much less than my normal weight that I felt intense shame. I was also captivated.

That's one thing SparkPeople is good for, because you can see normal people with an "after" or maintenance weight that is normal, not the "after" weight of a model or a competitive runner.

The only times in my adult life when I've been below 150 were when I was breastfeeding a baby or when I was in a particular period of intense grief. Both times, I made it down to 145.

One thing I'm proud of is that I am finally, at least in this protected space, being honest about my weight and how even something that is not close to the ideal would be fine and healthy. It feels like a risk to post my weight. Although who cares really? It is liberating, too, to take something that has been a source of shame and just treat it as an interesting metric.

I'm just rambling. I feel as though I can do that here.

This is a really poignant and beautiful entry.

Even though I am short, I relate to the feelings of your post.

I have found that over time I have grown to have gratitude for my body for what it does for me and I appreciate my strength and health and that is far more valuable to me now than being svelte. I attribute much of this attitude change to NoS. Yay for NoS and this amazing forum.

175.5 today.

Managed to stay green yesterday, including having water at the movie theater, but no snacks. Victory over bad habits! It was a weird day for eating - we ate a late breakfast due to the snow day, and after the movie, I had a reception for work. I ate 3 hors douvres as "lunch" at the reception, then a burrito later for dinner. I felt good about what I ate and about getting back on track. I packed chili for lunch today.

173.5 today.

Green yesterday, and no real desire to eat between meals. I did have a glass of plain kefir when I got home with the groceries, which helped fortify me for putting away the groceries without eating them.

Last week, at our school's big potluck, I had the first occasion when a person told me "You've lost weight!" He is from another country, where that remark would not be rude. He's someone from my running team that I don't see a lot. I felt both pleased that it is noticeable, and embarrassed that it was noticeable. Weird emotions.

I did go running this weekend (2.6 miles), and I also did hot yoga. It felt like a good balance of activity and rest. I am finally over a cold that I've had since returning from Arizona.

I did the March for Our Lives this weekend with my daughter, so we got our 10,000 steps, and more, that day. My phone died, but hers said we did 11,000 steps. The March here started in Roxbury and went to the Boston Common. It was inspiring to see all of the young people marching and leading.

It was nice. She is 13, and she was fired up. I wanted to just be lazy and go to the rally at the end, and she was determined to march the whole way.

175 today. I want to pay attention to 1/2 fruits and veggies on my plate, no virtual plating, and more water. Yesterday was a good choice for lunch - a salad from the salad bar and small cup of soup. I put some three bean salad and beets on the salad, and that made it quite filling.

175 again today. Drank more water and black iced coffee today instead of hot coffee with milk. I feel more peppy, maybe because I'm hydrated.

Yesterday with a big salad for lunch with chicken breast, and I saved some for a side in today's lunch. Then dinner was takeout from a Thai place (silver noodles and crispy chicken with rice, and mango). I did not snack at my board meeting, but I did allow myself a clementine there, without marking it red.

I had a pulled pork sandwich today for lunch, so not the healthiest, but I paired it with a lot of greens (collards greens as the condiment, plus a side salad), so that mitigates the damage. Tonight I'm making steak and some sides TBD.

Thanks!

175 again today. Bit of a fail yesterday - I ate a nectarine, and then I finished my kid's nectarine that she handed me. Then I ate some seconds (rice and peas) while putting away leftovers.

I walked to work today, 2.2 miles. I may walk home, or I might take the T.

You still got a fair number of green days in March. Do your best to tighten up where you can. You'll find your balance.

Hours in the car this weekend, broken up by some walks and one run. We celebrated Passover and Easter with the families. This is a high stress week before my fundraiser (major annual event) on Friday. I am going to try to channel my stress into the idea of taking care of myself to protect my body during this week. I may not weigh or check in here much.

OK, I'm back, and mostly recovered from my big event. I need to make myself an April calendar.

Some fails last week, which I may be able to remember more accurately if I check my datebook.

Today - green so far. I ended up grabbing the school lunch, which included some chicken, sweet potato roasted fries, roasted broccoli and some mixed veggies of summer squash and red peppers.

174 this morning. Green yesterday and Monday. I made a sausage ragout sauce that was delicious, and we had it for dinner on Monday and lunch today. Dinner last night was lamb chops and sauteed purple cabbage.

Today for breakfast, I made buttermilk scones, and I am still trying to figure out how to adjust the recipe for the new flour I've been buying. I think I need to add 2-3 TB of flour to adjust the recipe. They were good but kind of droopy - usually when I make this recipe, you can cut them with a biscuit cutter, but these stuck to the cutter and had to be scraped onto the pan. Anyway, despite looking a bit melted, they were delicious.

Already had a red event today - tried the bday cake for my friend at work, then it wasn't even good. Tonight for dinner - maybe sushi out. I'm on my own tonight, because my boyfriend plans to work late, and my kid will eat pizza at her orchestra dress rehearsal.

Trying to reconstruct April so far:

I fell off the wagon with checking in, but not with the habits. I got to a place where I stopped losing weight, and seem to be naturally maintaining at 175 lbs. I've kept the habits pretty well - I seem to have one failure each week, but just a failure event, not a whole day off the rails. I am grateful to have lost 10+ lbs and maintained that loss.

I would like to restart the weight loss again, and so I am considering ideas on how to do it - maybe smaller plates? Maybe a default lunch of soup a few days a week? Or a default breakfast of greek yogurt and fruit? I was eating more soup when I was losing weight.

Hi Jenji, congratulations on reducing the amount of unplanned eating you are doing from days to events, as well as the weight loss.

May I respectfully suggest that if you are still having weekly unplanned eating events on N days you don't restrict further at the moment. It is tempting when weight loss beckons, but runs the risk of derailing the whole process. Of course, this may not be a problem for you.

If you manage to have fewer failures, you will probably lose some more weight anyway.

Thank you! I should probably just get back to tracking.

I'm going to do the simplest tracking and record that yesterday was green.

174 today. Yesterday was red because I ate some of my daughter's leftover rice and peas instead of just putting it away or composting them. Other than that, I did not cheat.

Friday will be an S-day. I am participating in an overnight relay, and I don't want to worry about when or what I eat.

Something nice I've noticed is that I am no longer hungry outside of mealtimes, except when I have a late dinner. I may slip up and eat, but I am not hungry. I think I have my appetite in a more reasonable expectation place.

Speaking of gluttony and expectations, I also have noticed that I have a tendency toward drinking too much coffee, partly as part of my risk aversion/planning ahead tendencies. Like, I've just had coffee at home, but if I happen to park near the coffee shop in the morning, I have this compulsion that I should get some more, "just in case". I am trying to be more present and aware of this tendency, and to actually let my body tell me that coffee is already sloshing about in my stomach; more is not needed.

I've started trying to use the HabitCal on here. I am unable to reconstruct April in full, but I have a record of the other months. It is nice to be able to see it all in one place. When I was losing weight, I did not have perfect compliance, but it was much better. I had 4-5 red days in Oct, Nov, December, and January, compared to 10 red days in February, 7 in March, and an unknown number in April. So far, I've had 3 red days in May, plus one S day planned.

The emoji calendars are cute, but I didn't even make one in April. In the spirit of No S, I feel I should keep it simpler and use the habitcal.

Hiya Jenji, good luck with the Habitcal. I have to say, I think it is brilliant! So simple, so effective. I never thought it would work for me, but it has definitely helped. Can’t really explain why. Probably it clarifies the idea that you have just one chance to get a day right. You think of how it would feel to have the whole day marked down as a red square, and you realise that you want it to be green. You realise you have a choice. You realise that you can do it!

For me, Habitcal has been part of the No S magic! Hope you get on well with it. All the best!

I did yoga yesterday, which felt challenging and good for me. My hips are so tight. I think I’ll go out for a run. It’s so nice out.

I failed with panache yesterday. I decided to bake a pumpkin pie, and then I had friends over to eat it. It was worth it but not a planned NWS day. Oh well.

I have had green days since Monday. I am pre-planning my dinner tonight because I'm going to a hipster taco place with a group, and I don't want to be waylaid. I was going to get one glass of wine, but I see that they have a few non-sweet cocktails, so I might get one of them. The Red Wedding sounds intriguing: gin, raspberry, lemon, cava. If that is not too sweet, I will give that a whirl.

I am back at 173 today.

172 today.

Yesterday - how to mark? I had two drinks out, cocktails, not terribly sweet, but more than I'd planned. I did not eat food outside of meals. I know in the original system, R allowed himself 2 alcoholic drinks a day, but for me, one drink is more my limit. Anything more is both too many calories and leaves me feeling crappy. I think I will mark it red on the Habitcal to keep myself honest.

Hi Jen! I've been lurking on your thread ever since I saw this
I used to tell people that I was researching to write a how-to guide, "How to stay slightly fat despite exercise".
and wanted to say hi :) I could write a companion book "How to not lose an ounce despite daily exercise". I did two "60-day weight loss challenges" at my gym and lost nothing, despite doing my regular daily exercising and going to extra exercise classes.

The introductory session for the second weight-loss challenge I did was very clear about exercise not being the magic answer to weight loss. Even at the gym, they were telling us that exercise was only something like 20% of weight loss (I forget the number, but it was quite low), and they offered some nutrition sessions. I do know what's healthy already, though -- what I need is help on implementation! I believe No S will give me that structure.

I love exercise -- one area where Reinhard and I disagree. It makes me feel so much better physically and mentally. And I know it helps you not lose muscle if you're in the midst of losing weight. But I'm definitely living proof that exercise alone won't stop creeping weight gain.

Anyway, long (sorry) hello, but thanks for your posts!

Hi Sharon! I love exercise, too, for health and sanity, but it has not helped me lose weight. Thanks for reading. I am not currently a member of a gym (I quit last year and directed the equivalent to my monthly dues into my kid's college fund), but I run and walk a lot and sometimes lift weights. I also do some sporadic things like hike, kayak, ski, zumba, and snowshoe. I also buy 10-packs of yoga classes and use them over about 6 months.

I really worked the S day yesterday, with a bowl of buttered popcorn during a Dr. Who marathon with the kid, plus a walk to the local ice cream parlor for a cone of the flavor of the month: strawberry rhubarb.

I decided to make the popcorn my dinner, since we ate it about 6:45 pm, so there was no point pretending I was hungry for dinner.

Zumba and yoga sound fun! I joined a gym because when the weather's bad, I started slacking off on exercising. Nothing's better for me than a little running when the weather's great outside, though!

I had an aha! moment when reading your reply. We both agree that we love exercise because it's good for us physically and mentally, even if it's not the magic bullet for losing weight. I certainly wouldn't stop exercising just because that alone won't get me to the weight my doctor wants me at.

Yet right now I'm so disappointed that I haven't lost weight on No S yet, after all of 2 weeks. But why would I stop No S because of that? It's also making me feel good in other ways.

I guess I'll give it some more time and, if I'm still not losing, start looking at making some small changes to how much/what I'm eating.

173.5 today.

Two failure events yesterday:
1 - half a fancy deviled egg, which my kid bit into at a campaign kickoff party, did not like, and asked me to take. I popped it in my mouth. (It was delicious. The worst is when you cheat, and it tastes bad, lol.) Other than that, I did not eat anything at the cocktail party.
2 - sampled the roast chicken I made last night, which is for tonight's dinner.

I marked it red in the habitcal.

Yes, my friend is running for state rep, and her kickoff event was at a farm to table fancy pants restaurant near Harvard.

I did stay green yesterday. Intending to stay green today. I am wearing a pair of cute capri trousers today that would not have fit 6 months ago. Feels good.

Yesterday was also a failure (red day). Two this week. I was running around a lot yesterday evening - jetted home to walk my neighbors dog, then turned around and drove back to Central Sq to pick up my kid after rehearsal, then stuck in traffic getting my farm share and getting home. So dinner was quite late for us - 7:45. While cooking, I took a bite from the Dutch baby that was leftover from breakfast, and I ate 2 pieces of dried mango. Once I got dinner on the table, I ate a reasonable dinner and did not cheat again.

Oh well, live and learn. I'd like to get to a yoga class this weekend - will pick one to attend and make a date.

174# today.

I had a red day yesterday. My cousin was in town, and I haven't seen her in years. I suggested walking into a local fun square, and we got ice cream. We were in line before I even thought about No S. I limited the damage with a kiddie size, and as it happened, I didn't like the flavor enough to eat the whole thing. But still definitely an unplanned sweet.

Hi!

Being around family or visitors can sure bring up old eating cues. Sometimes I think about a nephew-in-law who can't really be induced to eat. He's not unpleasant about it. He's usually talking about something else anyway, and will just brush off the offer saying he might have some later. In any case, you marked it and are moving on.

I shouldn't foretell the future becaseu no one can promise anyone else what No S will be lik efor them, but I predict that after you've been compliant for several months or a year, you will be almost puzzled at the idea of taking for granted getting a sweet just because you're out and about in an environment that is a bit frivolous. A hundred or so years ago when people had time to go for fun only on the weekends, it was an automatic limiter. People take it for granted that it will be available and that there's no real reason not to partake. But there is...

I still distinctly remember ambling along a boardwalk with a boyfriend probably some time in the late afternoon and getting a waffle cone. It was certainly fun but now I also think what was I thinking? What did it have to do with anything to get that? I wasn't hungry, it wasn't a celebration, dinner time was coming, etc. But No S is a bit like living in our own little world.

I had another red day yesterday. I am using Habitcal to mark both reds and greens. This one was a day I probably should've planned as a NWS/yellow day at the outset. We were hiking in the White Mountains, and I had a bar during the hike and an ice cream afterward.

Honesty helps you think of next time. You could have declared (NWS) or tried establishing a new habit of not assuming you will need food just because you're exerting yourself and are far from, well, the ice cream. :) I like to say I have snacks right in my thighs.

I did need the bar - I was shaky and still out on the trail. But I did not need the ice cream! I thought about declaring NWS, but the truth is, I thought I could stay green and planned to do so.

Green again. I did a yoga video this morning from Youtube (Yoga with Adriene), a nice followup to all the hiking this weekend and the weight training I did during the Doctor Who marathon yesterday.

I saw 172 again on the scale yesterday, randomly. Did not weigh today.

I haven’t decode yet whether today is a yellow day. It’s Independence Day, and I am charged with bringing dessert and wine to the BBQ. It’s so hot, I am loathe to turn on my oven. I might just buy dessert.

Next week, we are going on my first-ever cruise, and I know I will have some special days during that vacation. Decisions, decisions...

Either way, I should get off my butt and eat breakfast.

I weighed in today at 172.5

What did you end up taking? I don't bake sweets anymore. It's so easy to buy pretty good ones to take.

I went to a potluck on the 4th where there was a huge apple pie from Costco. It was in the special packaging and everything but people kept asking, "Who made the pie?" Soon nearly the whole group would answer, "Costco!" I don't know anybody who would be that painstaking about making a pie from scratch..

Here's to a green Friday.

I work with a guy who bakes incredible pies. During the holiday season, if he brings one into the office, I will turn that day into an extra S day without a second thought  (Luckily for me, that's usually only once or twice a year)

171 today. Although I did not hew to the rules completely on my cruise, I did keep to three meals, with some attention to getting 1/2 the plate veggies. I had sweets a few times. It is so nice to have someone else making you enticing veggies and salads.

Today has been hard. First time in a while that I was home alone all day. I briefly contemplated a “healthy†dessert, even getting out a bowl, then putting it away. I also opened the fridge at a non-meal time and stared into it. I didn’t feel hungry, just on a mission. I did close the fridge without eating. Thinking I should head out for a walk.

God being at home makes it much harder! When I used to work (on maternity leave now) the day was effortlessly structured so it was much easier.
Well done on closing that fridge door when you did, no matter what happens next, you are doing really well.

Another hard afternoon. I guess I didn't eat enough lunch - two bean tacos made from some leftovers and a dried peach. I came home from an errand picking up my farm share and started getting food out to make myself a late lunch, totally forgetting for a moment that I'd already eaten, until I saw my dishes in the sink from earlier. I put the groceries away. I am actually hungry, so I think I'll have some tea and then some milk to tide me over.

I am working on the couch, because I was meeting a contractor. Tomorrow I will work in the office all day. Hopefully that will help keep me in a better routine. (I work 20 hrs/week in the summer, and use it to catch up on errands; home repairs and cleaning; and doctor, dentist, and vet appointments.)

I made it yesterday, by the skin of my teeth.

I saw an exciting number on the scale this morning. I know it’s not smart to dwell on a number, yet still, I am happy to see that little drop today. I’m fully prepared for some ping-ponging up and down before, I hope, settling a bit lower.

The number that was exciting to me was 168.5, then when I jumped off and on again, 169.5. First time out of the 170s in some time. I split the difference and marked it as 169 in Happy Scale.

I ate Indian food twice this weekend. Yum! Actually, four times, because I had the leftovers for breakfast. My sweet this weekend was coconut ice cream. I did a yoga workout on Saturday, but not much else in the way of exercise.

I weighed in at 169.5 this morning.

169 again this morning. I am wearing a cute summer dress that I could not wear last summer (because of too much boob for my comfort). I fully support any lady showing her cleavage if she likes, but I feel uncomfortable about how I look when my cup runs over.
