I’m not necessarily a No S success story yet, but this was more encouragement and confirmation that this is the path I want to be on for my healthy lifestyle.

Really interesting, Tracey - thanks for posting! Wow, this lady has willpower - she can respond to evening hunger by drinking water! Respect! 😊 maybe it’s because she has developed her willpower by being minimalist in other ways. I clocked her mention of the ‘one shoe’! Oh lord, I have hundreds. Could my perma-shoe buying be related to my permasnacking? A sort of personal ‘incontinence ‘ to use an old-fashioned term? Well the minimalist blogger has definitely got me thinking. Must read more of her!

AMAZING parallel. It reminds me so much of Reinhard's basic goal: systematic moderation. Sure, he was glad to lose a fair amount of fat, but I submit that the philosophical underpinning was/is crucial to his adherence. (If you've listened to his podcasts, there is very little discussion of the weight loss aspect as a goal; one of his heroes is Ben Franklin, whose desriptions of bettering himself are the focal point. Certainly not weight loss! The images of him make him look pretty portly.) I'd bet R knows almost nothing about weight loss gurus. At one point, I know he had a group of friends who would get together and talk about the philosophers they'd read. Who's got time to dwell on diet and exercise when the real good life needs attention!)

It's a little sad that the weight loss is the motivating factor for so many people. I imagine some women especially would read that and plunge in because of the mention of the 12-lb weight loss. They read about someone losing weight from some regime, often one that had success by some doctor for some other purpose and plunge in, as if they can repeat the process without the original motivation of the "loser." People afraid of stroke or death are not eating differently to look good in a bikini, though that might happen.

I also want to mention that from about Jan. 2016 I did a lot of looking at the longevity findings for chronic restriction of calories from various stategies, and I can tell you, though these scientists do talk to some degree about overweight and obesity, the main thrust of their recommendations are about decreasing intake, NOT on weight loss. The weight loss is just a side effect and not the goal. People are going to lose differently even with the same drop in calories and yet achieve a lot of the same benefits. I thought about how much backlash there is against dieting for appearance' sake these days. I totally agree, but it doesn't mean there aren't definite advantages to eating less, and instilling fear in people about it might be a real mistake. Some of the recommendations for those with compulisve eating practices are warned not to decrease caloriies, but to spread them out over the whole day "so they won't feel deprived or too hungry. I never once embarked on a binge because I was truly hungry. I could have just eaten a meal the hour before!

And regarding her hunger after dinner: she sounds like she was not much of an overeater before and didn't have a lot of food hangups. Her hunger after dinner may have been a lot milder. And she didn't have the added pressure of "I MUST lose weight! Otherwise, I'll be unacceptable!" Which actually often leads to its being even harder to limit eating, if you just look at the people who fail at that when being thin is the laser focus.

Ah, how I love my soapboxes! I have really sturdy ones, not the run-of-the-mill

Every time I read about minimalism, I start tossing stuff, donating it, etc... So far I haven't had any serious regrets. Of course it"s only my stuff. I'd love to get a hold of a shovel to clear out my husbands collections, but can't find the shovel. Maybe I donated it...

I read a blurb once about a woman whose husband was in the service and went ahead of the family to get a place ready for their move. The wife got rid of tons of his stuff in emptying out their old house. After they had been in the new place awhile, they had a dinner at which she revealed what she had done. The husband was aghast. She said if he could think of one thing that he realized he missed, she would apologize. He couldn't. :lol:

I finally read this link. So funny! This lady is definitely unique. She reminds me of my Dad, who was my inspiration to join NoS and start having some "automated" eating habits. This lady just says how she would have half her normal dessert. Wow. Impressive.

Fun stuff! I think I will now "binge" on her blog (is that terrible to say? Doggone it all!)

Having loads of stuff means that you have to ‘curate’ it...which uses willpower! Hence greater vulnerability to snacking. And of course if you just let the clutter build, then snacking is a great way of ignoring it! I am subject to both of these pressures... :oops:

Pontificating here on No S is another way to avoid getting rid of clutter, especially paper clutter. I’ve done it for years! By the way, when I use text, it writes “no ass†for you know what .
