Breathing question

Take a sledgehammer and wrap an old sweater around it. This is your "shovelglove." Every week day morning, set a timer for 14 minutes. Use the shovelglove to perform shoveling, butter churning, and wood chopping motions until the timer goes off. Stop. Rest on weekends and holidays. Baffled? Intrigued? Charmed? Discuss here.

Breathing question

Post by Tim4701 » Thu Sep 21, 2006 5:38 am

This may have been covered somewhere else, but I haven't found it yet so I'll ask here. I noticed in Reinhards videos that he forcefully exhales when performing the moves. Is this a matter of preference, or is there a benefit to it that makes pronounced exhaling worth doing?

If I don't breath forcefully, I make squinty funny faces that looks stupid and I'm sure is unhealthy. I read somewhere recently that not breathing while lifting weights can put undue pressure on your optic nerve and hurt your vision, and I believe it (my vision is bad enough as it is). At first, I had to remind myself to breath instead of squint, but it got natural fast.

The breathing is very important! Exhale during the "work" phase of each movement and your endurance will benefit. I find that especially with heavier hammers correct breathing is critical.

I'll third that! Breathing in this way also helps you to keep the rythmn of the movement and syncronizing your body to your breath is a fundamental principal in any motion-meditation, too which SG lends itself very well.

0:01s Video = 30 pictures
therefore, 0:01s Video = 30,000 words

"Breathe"
by Freakwitch
lyrics by Matthew Shields

It don't matter the situation
There's always one thing you can do
Pay attention to the way the air goes
In and out of you

You gotta learn how to breathe
You gotta learn how to breathe

It don't matter what you are doing
Running a race or sitting still
If you do this one thing
You'll do it better still

You gotta learn how to breathe
You gotta learn how to breathe

What I'm saying may sound so simple
You wonder why I waste my breath
It's the one thing you'll be doing
From now until your death

You gotta learn how to breathe
You gotta learn how to breathe
You gotta learn how to breathe
You gotta learn how to breathe

You're right, it does make a difference...

Now that I've been SG'ing for over a week I find that the breathing really does help me keep a good rythem going. Doesn't feel right if I'm not focusing on breathing now... I guess it just took a couple of days to get used to it. Thanks for the input.

Not yet. Patience, young Reinhardwalker. Still working on the album. Anyone ever notice that albums take a really long time to record? We've been at it since April, but we are in fact making weekly progress. I had hoped it would be done by the end of the summer, but obviously we're in autumn now. I'd imagine by the end of 2006....

I know! No Freakwitch album release until I'm under 300 lbs! LOL
