The 21(day) Club

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Last Friday was my 21st day on the diet. I gained two lbs in the first week, which hasn't budged yet. Hopefully, by sticking with it, they'll slowly but surely go!

Welcome, Ragdoll!

Don't stress about the two pounds. Get the behavior down and the pounds will follow. It's not unusual for people to experience an uptick when they're first starting (can take a while get a feeling for how big one's plates need to be, S-day panic to subside, etc.).

21 Days!

Post by Elspeth » Mon Feb 08, 2010 1:24 pm

I'm a new member of the 21 Club! Yesterday I completed 21 days on habit. I've also lost 5 pounds, which I'm happy about, but I'm even more happy to have been able to get through 21 days without a slip up.

I love that it's starting to feel natural to me to confine my eating to 3 meals a day during N days. This past weekend I went a bit overboard on my S days and ended up feeling stuffed and uncomfortable. Scary to think that is the way I used to eat most of the time.

My new goal is for another 21 days, which would take me to Feb. 28. It would be great to start March with 6 straight weeks on habit. :D

Welcome, Elspeth! I'm working on round 2, which will be completed this Thursday. I'm thinking of my next major benchmark as Mar. 20, the first day of spring. I think it will make even more sense then to stick with it as part of being the new me. Hope you'll be there.

Celebrated 21 consecutive days yesterday. Since January 17 have had just 3 red days. In that time I added in a Habitcal for exercise and have 16 days on plan so far. I won't say I've mastered No-S and daily exercise, but I have definitely learned to do them automatically.

No, I'm not really losing weight yet but I am genuinely changing lifelong habits. Today I'm creating a new Habitcal for drinking a pitcher of water per day and March 1st I will add eating 5 fruits and vegetables (which will help nudge out some of the less worthwhile calories).

Still 100% in favor of this approach. I will continue to be patient with my weight and know that I am learning a new way to live.
Starting weight: 203-206
1st goal: 198 (weight right after having baby in June 2009)

Congrats! Don't worry about thinking you've got it down after 21 days. I think that's the LEAST amount of time needed. I definitely got to 21 days more than once in the first 14 months of trying No S, but never twice in a row before.

For myself, I think one of my mistakes was being in a rush to think the problem was over. I want to have it handled! I've accepted that it doesn't likely work that way. I'm thinking now that I have to go through all the seasons of a year to have this really become ingrained. All the holidays, all the work marathons, the summer vacation (teacher), starting a new school year, the intense heat of southern California early autumn, Thanksgiving and Christmas, etc. I believe our bodies need to learn to navigate all the sublte influences. There are so many associations we have with food! I don't think I need to figure them all out. I just need to keep eating my three plates a day through it all. They are my new North Star.

cowfishpro, welcome back. I fell off recently after a 13-week streak. I'm determined not to let it get too out of hand, as it did after my first 21 days back in the fall of 2008. I'm trying to remind myself that I don't have enough time left in my life to keep failing for another 40 years. Reading your post is bolstering my resolve to be back here. Keep it up!

Thanks Olala. Good luck to you as well.

One of my first attempts, I went several successful months. But because I don't really have a lot of weight to lose, I got arrogant, thinking I could just cut back, and I could keep my weight where I want.

As I age, it's getting harder. So now I ask, well, if I don't do NoS, what is the alternative? There really is none right now. I work out regularly, have for years. I enjoy it, too. That used to be enough to keep me at a good weight. Not any more. So I think NoS is here to stay.

I only have 10ish pounds to lose, but I've already dropped 4 in the 3 weeks. I know it will be slow from here on out, but it will be steady, for sure. I'm looking forward to my clothes fitting me better, again.

What day are you on now?

Well, I did it!!... and didn't even realize it!! :D

I have to say that this is the easiest and least intrusive "diet" that I've ever used. It is so nice to not even have to worry about and plot and plan my day around what I can eat, how much and when...3 plates. No snacks, no sweets and no seconds...so simple and so effective!

Thanks oolala and Reinhard! After reading KCCC's lovely sticky, I'm committing myself to 2 consecutive 21 day periods before moving on to phase 2. After some REDS , todays is day 3. See ya!

I love this thread!
I'm only on day 9 of 21 (many failed attempts before the 9 days...).
I must say that though I'm not perfect (yet...), I sure love this system and have overcome bad habits that I never thought possible...already!
I can only imagine how much better I"ll feel the more I practice this "NO S". With a history of eating disorders/diet addictions/mental obsession with food, this is such an answer to my prayers.
So simple. Pure. No gimmick. What I've been looking for for too long...
THANK YOU REINHARD

Today is day 63 of No S for me! I didn't post here before, because I tend to think in terms of months and I posted at the end of the first month to the personal Mt. Olympus to claim my silver medal, but this seems to be where the action is!

As promised, the second month of NoS was in general infinitely easier than the first. The first 2 weeks of NoS were a real bear for me, but things have more or less steadily improved from there. Did have one disastrous S weekend after 5 straight successful weeks of vanilla NoS which prompted me to make a modification I call "chocolate NoS." I am sure others have used that same name. What I found was that 5 straight N days followed by 2 S days was not ideal for me, because I don't work a regular week and I study intensely every day as a law student. So I have 3 S meals - a breakfast, a lunch, and a dinner, spread through the week - Sunday breakfast, Wednesday lunch and Friday night dinner. It's pretty much vanilla NoS otherwise, except I really don't snack and don't usually allow any seconds except for virtual plating, except maybe sometimes at an S meal. The Sunday breakfast may include something sweet, but it hasn't yet, and the main feature is that it is just something different and special, usually whole wheat waffles with yogurt and strawberries. The Wednesday lunch is very different - a "dessert lunch." I found I just wasn't getting any real dessert because of eating meals without snacks and sticking to a single plate, so for lunch on Wednesday I drink a whey protein shake made just with water and ice, and then have a really special dessert. Have been doing this for 4 Wednesdays now and have had a hot fudge sundae, homemade profiterole with ice cream and homemade hot fudge sauce, waffle and ice cream with homemade strawberry sauce and the hot fudge sauce, and, today, a wonderful whole wheat carrot cake, no icing, with butter pecan ice cream. I don't eat to excess, just enjoy having a treat. Then for dinner on Friday night, I usually but not always eat a small dessert and I do allow seconds if I am still hungry. Other than that, I pretty much stick to one 9" plate. So far, this has worked great.

I am very grateful to No S. When I started 2 months ago, I was not overweight, but I was alternately starving myself and waking up in the middle of the night with painful hunger pangs every night and then blowing it and eating to excess every few weeks. It was awful. After the first 2 weeks on No S, I stopped getting hungry at all at night and I just don't eat anything after dinner. My weight is good now - maybe I'd like to lose a pound, but I really look fine and I don't really care any more because all my clothes fit. It is bringing me back to sanity. I am still overly concerned with how much I weigh and still weigh myself more than once a day, but I am working on letting that go. This is a really great plan and I am so grateful to Reinhard for putting it out there. Posting on the site and the Habitcal are really helpful, too. Thanks very much,
Sherry

Congratulations, Sherry.
I like how you modified the "No S" to work with YOUR life. We all have different challenges and you didn't just throw in the towel because you can't do it "by-the-book".
Good luck and good job!

I'm envious of how you've found a way to make S events work for you. I love my N days, but I can't figure out how to make my S days more sane. But enough about me. Congrats!

Okay, I'm still a freak on S-days, but I've finally made it back to the 21-day Club for the first time since the end of March. It feels good!

Hi Everyone-
Well, I just finished my 2nd round of 21 success days on NoS.
I do floating S days and generally try for low carb N days. My S days are a free for all.
I could easily keep living like this, but am disappointed by no wt loss.
However, I realize that I should be grateful that NoS has helped me maintain a prior wt loss of 20# (achieved on a low carb diet over the past year), and that is not to be taken for granted. I appreciate being able to be normal around food and participate in social activities. Also clarity of thought, and the ability to think about cause and effect, and ways I might want to tweak the program in the future to enjoy food and hopefully see some wt loss as well.
Thanks to all of you for being here and sharing about your journeys!

What a great journey! Remember, habits, habits, habits, before weight loss... if you get too attached to the scale, just ignore it for awhile, if you can.

Very good advice. Some days I'm not happy with what the scale says, but I know my weight is still continuing to go down and that's what I focus on.

FIRST TIME!!! :D I'm a 21 dayer. It was a close call my first 3 weeks but I had one day in week 3 that I just didn't feel comfortable calling as a success. BUT now it's been 24 days of success! I've just been so busy packing and getting moved back into school that I forgot to post! :D

I forgot to acknowledge my 21 days at the beginning of the week. I've actually had many streaks, but I foundered so much in the summer that I felt I should recognize myself for being back on track. I also got to change my signature to show that I've now lost 17 lbs. since I started at the beginning of 2010. I could have posted on the testimonial page at 10 lbs., but I'm going to wait until I'm down 20 lbs.

Hit 21 days yesterday.

The results so far:

1. Enjoying lots of delicious foods all the time that I had put "off limits." Until I started No S, I'd been doing the low carb thing, with zero results, and lots of deprivation. Now I'm eating pizza, bread, oatmeal, mac and cheese, desserts, candy--eating is fun again!

2. Lost two pounds. My scale is pretty goofy, I gotta admit. So I don't know if this weight loss is "real" or not. But for me, the main point is that I am eating foods I really love, and really eating as much as I want/need for the first time in years, and the trend is down rather than up.

3. I have stopped worrying and obsessing about food. I'm not wasting my energy thinking about whether or not I'm hungry, or when I should eat, or what I should eat. The answers are very clear: I eat three meals a day, and I eat whatever I want--except dessert. Problem solved.

4. I've discovered I actually enjoy food (and my life!) more when I don't snack between meals, and that, contrary to my old ideas, I don't need to eat every two or three hours to keep going or keep my energy up. I do get hungry an hour or two before the next meal, but there's nothing wrong with that. I am SUPPOSED to be hungry before I eat.

5. Letting myself enjoy the indulgances allowed on this plan is important as adhering to the restrictions. It is the promise of the S days coming up on the weekend that have allowed me to respect the NS days rules without feeling deprived. It is the promise of eating pretty much whatever I want at the next meal, outside desserts, that allows me to avoid the temptation to snack.

6. Checking in every day is a big help. Especially on the S days. When I know I am going to write down every thing I eat and share it on the daily check in board, it helps me keep things reasonable. I want to feel good when I share about what I ate, not embarressed!

Looking forward to the next 21 days!

Congratulations AnneK and frugaltexan!
I have stopped worrying and obsessing about food
Though the pounds are nice, I think this is my favorite part about no-s. And it's intimately connected with this:
I've discovered I actually enjoy food (and my life!) more

21 days as of yesterday.

Feels great to find a way to feel sane around food. The concept of pre-disapproval is priceless. From that concept alone I have probably gained an hour or two a day from not hunting for snacks, not eating extra meals, not cleaning up extra dishes and not ruminating over the "should I eat that / shouldn't I eat that conundrum.

Not sure how much weight I have lost b/c I promised myself that I wouldn't weigh in until January 2. It is killing me to wait that long, but one thing that meeting the 21 day challenge is teaching me: It's easier to keep commitments to yourself than it is to break them. So I will wait for the weigh-in.

Thanks Reinhard for a great program and thanks to everyone on the board for your encouragement and help.

Congratulations Callie302 and dsperley!
The concept of pre-disapproval is priceless. From that concept alone I have probably gained an hour or two a day from not hunting for snacks, not eating extra meals, not cleaning up extra dishes and not ruminating over the "should I eat that / shouldn't I eat that conundrum.
There are a lot of positive side effects to no-s, aren't there? And I keep noticing new ones. Snack consuming (especially) is time consuming! Thanks for that observation.

I made the 21 Day Club!

That's the good news. The bad news is that I gained 2 lbs, but I am not going to dwell on that. I want to focus on the fact that I was able to do the 21 days, right off the bat, because I know that there are many people who have not been able to do that. I have a good foundation in place and I'm going to continue to build on it.

I've spent a lot of time reading old posts on the bulletin board and I've learned a lot. I posted about some of these things in my daily check in, so if anyone is interested you can read about it there. I've spent so many years on the diet treadmill, and I've got a ton of diet baggage to get rid of, but I also learned a lot of valuable lessons over the years. Unfortunately some of those lessons were starting to conflict and causing me confusion. Finding the No S diet has been a God-send because it's helping me sort through the confusion and now those random bits of knowledge are finally falling into place.

So even though I haven't lost any weight yet I am positive and happy because I have direction and hope again. It will happen.

In! I had a couple less-than-perfect days, but I am a changed woman!

Here's where I am after a month:

1. Down a total of 2lb
2. Becoming a better cook
3. Way more thoughtful about what I eat
4. Really enjoying every meal

Goals for the next 21 days
1. Stop weighing myself everyday. Will attempt to weigh only once this week. This will be
2. Keep up the exercise 3x/week (maybe even increase to 4x week)
3. Buy/read the book!
Slow and steady wins the race.

21 Days! as of Yesterday....

4 YELLOW S day
Rest were GREEN! :D

Did not have any S days I felt were overboard, but I definitely did not hold back. I ended up not taking Sundays as S days for no reason except that nothing came up that I "had to have". I won't rule out more S days in the future.

I did count calories after I had chosen food and eaten what I wanted. I did not choose my foods based on calories. I was already exercising (ride my bike walk etc.) but I stepped it up a bit.

Things I need to work on:
Keep doing what I am doing.
Adding strength training
Less wine

Down about 6-7 pounds since the beginning of the year. :D

I made it over here as of last Thursday! :) been following no S 40 days total now, but one slip-up made it take longer for me to reach this club. The slip up was actually worth it so I'm okay with that. I'm here now, anyway! :D

Cool Coffee!

I'm working on my second 21 day string now, too! I almost had dessert the other night at a friends house...she made something special for me, but I asked if I could just take it home and that was cool. (was going to save it for the weekend but my husband ate it in the meantime  )

Good luck and let's keep on rollin'.
