Reinhard, A Question about Ads

Post by Jammin' Jan » Tue Aug 09, 2005 11:13 am

Do you get money for your website if we click on the ads which appear across the top of each page? Some sites do, and so I was wondering about this.

Funny thing, this morning when I clicked on my Daily Check-in page, all the adds were for tai chi! Are they customizing now?

Uh, I'm not allowed to answer your first question according to the terms of the agreement.... except to point out that if some generous but misguided soul routinely clicks on random ads in the hope of enriching me, omniscient google will surely eject me from the program. So by all means click, but only if you have actual interest.

As for your second question, yes, they are customized based on the content of the page on which they appear. Sometimes this customization seems to fall a little short of google's usual brilliance... but it's a hard problem, and I'm not aware that anyone else has done anything remotely as smart.

Jan,
I often quickly scan the ads because they remind me of something. So, if it's something I am genuinely interested in, I will click on it. I know there was one ad (on the shovelglove section, I think) that I clicked on an ended up buying something from the site - it was something I needed anyhow.

Yes Jan, the ads are generated by the content of the posts... So, now, because sweetie Peetie called my Richie a "future hunk" he has ads for
"Hunks available" Ha ha!!!! So far I think between Reinhard and Justin and of course Nathan, I have enough hunks here on NoS...
Not going to check out those ads...
My page has very boring ads because when Reinhard wrote one of his first posts, he mentioned the green/red traffic signal thing...
So if you need to buy a traffic signal or crosswalk thingy, just check the top of my page... Thanks Reinhard!
Just kidding!
Woe to the poor soul who mentions viagra or urinary catheters...
I think Samurai had ads for tortillas for some time... Maybe they changed to sword ads...
For the life of me, I don't know why Peeties page doesn't have a mess of ads for prune juice! I mess with her about that so often...
I think I saw an ad for crock pots on your thread once! LOL....
Well they haven't cut me off from my computer yet, whoopie!!!
See you later babe!
Reinhard, that was funny when you called Google omniscient...
I doubt they will eject you...
There's so much bs on the internet... Why would they eliminate a perfectly legitamate and helpful site such as yours?
I too am omniscient, and I say don't worry about that! LOL....
Peace and Love and ads for weird stuff,
8) Deb

Are the default ads (before google gets to crawl the generated page) related to diets? If so, is there some other set of ads anyone can think of? I assume this is something Reinhard can somewhat configure. As a long-time No-S dieter, I'm not really looking for a different one. But maybe some other ad might catch my eye.

Is that something that can be configured, Reinhard?

Seems to me that I used to see ads for different diets, but I never really paid much attention to them until this morning. Now I will have to watch everyone's Daily Check-in and see what comes up!

I'm not aware that I can configure anything about the ads. Before the pages are crawled or if there's not enough text there are just generic public service announcements. Yeah, it's a little stupid that most of the ads here are for direct competitors. I think I can remove ads for specific sites... maybe I'll look into that.

Sometimes the ads can be downright insulting! On the urban ranger home page you'll sometimes see a link to an "online cliche finder." I'm dying to find out what exactly this is, but refuse to give them the satisfaction.

I think I saw this somewhere else, inadvertantly... It's supposed to help people with writing something that doesn't seem canned or cliched...
Hmmm.. I don't know who the heck would use it? Maybe someone who was writing a resume, or some important presentation, and had very little confidence in their writing abilities....
Frankly the more diet ads I see, the happier I am to have found a genuinely healthy option, such as NoS... I wouldn't block them.. Their insincerity, and fake science, only makes NoS shine even more...
Peace and Love,
