Photoshop is a great tool though it may be more than you will use for awhile. Still it's pretty much standard for digital photographers. It is expensive, though, so if that's a problem you might wish to consider the latest version of Photoshop Elements (check Adobe's site or Amazon).

I also use a great software called Adobe Lightroom which does wonderful things for lighting, color etc with digital files. It's about $300 now. Good luck!

I use the GIMP for all my image-editing needs. It runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. It's also free as in price and free as in freedom.

Photofiltre is one program that I have used a little bit. Easier than Photoshop and Gimp, but more limited. But if Photofiltre does enough, then it is free (as in beer, I think) for personal use.

There are many photo editing software available in market these days. Last month, my sister started assisting a Port Macquarie photographer. Glad she found such a helpful and professional photographer.
