one handed shovelglove

Take a sledgehammer and wrap an old sweater around it. This is your "shovelglove." Every week day morning, set a timer for 14 minutes. Use the shovelglove to perform shoveling, butter churning, and wood chopping motions until the timer goes off. Stop. Rest on weekends and holidays. Baffled? Intrigued? Charmed? Discuss here.

one handed shovelglove

Post by VanillaGorilla » Tue Oct 11, 2005 8:16 am

just when i felt i was getting somewhere with my fitness goals again, i had to go and fracture my hand friday night at work. :x

looks like i'll be doing lots of dumbell work, levering and maybe some one-handed pushups until my right hand heals. i guess while it is a hinderance of sorts, i can look at it as an opportunity to strengthen my less dominant side...lol

Gee, Vanilla, I'm really sorry to hear about your accident. :(

As bad as this is, though, one hand is really just one small part of your body, and when the pain dies down, maybe you can use this as an opportunity to do some leg work and additional work on abs and back.

I hope this heals quickly!

i just went to the doctor and it looks like this hand is going to be fairly useless for awhile...it's a mess, so yes you are right.....eventually it'll be an opportunity to work on "weaker" areas.

So sorry Vanilla!!!
It takes six weeks for bones to heal... Try to get whatever "hand" massage therapy you can get as soon as you have approval to be worked on...
Best of luck

ps... You would be surprised how fast "compensation" patterns start happening with your other hand/arm, so you might not really want to do those one handed pushups and just be careful till you have both of them to support you...
You don't need to hurt yourself twice!
With respect and wishing you a good recovery!

Sorry to hear it, Vanilla. I've got no relevant experience to draw on to advise you... but I think Deb's note of caution is worth heeding.

i'm looking right now at doing mostly core and leg work once i am able hopefully.
i went to the doctor this morning and they've referred me to a specialist. they think there might be quite a bit of damage in there. hopefully they are overestimating that, but we shall see i guess.

Take care of your hand. Let it heal properly, and don't be impatient with it. Injuries which aren't completely healed before they're stressed again will come back to plague you in middle age and beyond. Core work sounds good, so long as you don't use that hand to brace your body when you're on the floor. Squats and lunges for the legs are good. Standing chi kung would be very good.

Tough break...

Post by Kevin » Wed Oct 12, 2005 5:22 pm

Tough break, VG (no pun intended).

I'm only up to 75 pushups in a single set. I'll hold upand wait until you're up to it again before I pick up the "race to 100." I've got other things I should be working out anyway.

Are you using a compression bandage?
I'm so sorry you are in such pain! How are you typing these posts!!??? LOL!!!!

i've set myself up to work lefty when i am online. i'm not on much, though...it's still very diffucult working one-handed.
i've been icing and elevating it per doctors instructions....it's still quite a mess at this time, though.

'ello, shuggers! long time, no speak (post? lol)

just figured i would check in for a moment...hope everyone is well.

i've been in therapy for my hand for a little over a week now and it is slow going. there were no fractures thankfully. it appears the middle finger got dislocated at the time of injury and the rest of it is soft tissue injury.
the doctor said the biggest problem with injuries to the fingers/top of the hand is that there is little to no protection for the bones and tissue beneath the skin...hence the slow healing.

right now i can move the index finger and thumb of my right hand. the other three are moving very little and the top of the hand is still fairly swollen. i think my girlfriend's forearms are bigger than my right forearm atm...lol

also had a little car accident this week which left me a bit sore everywhere else to go along with the hand....haha

anyhow...on the topic of fitness....i've been mostly watching my diet, doing levering movements with the sledge for my left hand/arm and lots of isometrics at the moment to try to stay in semi-decen condition.
it's not as good as a full-out workout, but we play the hand we are dealt, i guess.

Wish there was some way I could help, VG...

The last two fingers, on the ulnar side (the pinky finger side) plus I think half of the middle finger? (not sure???) are different innervations...
You must have smashed the nerve...

Have you tried ice and compression for the swelling?
That would help...
Sorry about the car accident..
That sucks..
Wishing you healing!
Peace and Love,
8) Deb
