Hunger and Satiety

Post by Karl » Sat Nov 12, 2005 3:17 am

A few interesting articles about how different foods affect a person's hunger feeling. The conclusions are that viscosity, texture, density, and type of food have a remarkable effect on the feeling of fullness while eating. So, choosing certain foods over others may help with portion control.

Study: Artificial sweetener may disrupt body's ability to count calories

Over the past 25 years, there has been a dramatic increase in the consumption of artificially sweetened foods and low viscosity, high-calorie beverages, said Swithers, a developmental psychobiologist.

"Incidence of overweight and obesity has also increased markedly during this period," she said. "Our hypothesis is that experience with these foods interferes with the natural ability of the body to use sweet taste and viscosity to gauge caloric content of foods and beverages. When you substitute artificial sweetener for real sugar, however, the body learns it can no longer use its sense of taste to gauge calories. So, the body may be fooled into thinking a product sweetened with sugar has no calories and, therefore, people overeat."

This whole website is interesting. They compare 38 foods for how full a person feels after ingesting an equal amount of calories.

Understanding Hunger and Satiety

Hunger - one of your body's strongest and most beneficial stimuli - helps insure that you consume enough Calories for your needs. However, it also works against you when you're trying to lose weight. You could easily lose weight just by eating less, but the less that you eat or the longer you postpone eating, the hungrier you become, and the longer it takes your hunger to subside once you do begin to eat. So the hungrier you are, the more likely it is that you'll overeat, consuming extra Calories that can quickly slow or reverse your weight loss.

As you know, the only way to end hunger is to eat. Eating provides satiety - a pleasant feeling of fullness and the corresponding reduction of hunger. But did you also know that some foods are better than others for satisfying your hunger? A baked potato, for example, will probably "fill you up" much better than a serving of candy that has the same number of Calories.

And, while the Atkin's diet is poor nuturition, here is why it might lead to some weight loss. I would never recommend an unbalanced eating plan without strict medical supervision. The point is that certain foods trigger the feeling of fullness earlier than others.

While the Atkins diet was controversial among nutritionists, a number of studies showed that it did indeed lead to weight loss. Researchers linked this effect to protein's impact on fullness, making dieters less likely to suffer from hunger pangs.

This doesn't surprise me at all.

Obnoxious self quote from home page section: Does fake sugar count as an "S"?
you might be fooling your taste buds, but you're also fooling the habit forming portion of your brain. It's bad psychology, and the whole premise of the No S Diet is that psychology is the most important part.
But I love it that I now have backup from a "psychobiologist."

Thanks, Karl.

Reinhard, all those "studies" are a dime a dozen (oh, if only they came that cheaply!), and they all just contradict each other. What you wrote, and continue to write, makes 100% sense, and you don't need psychologists or nutritionists or anybody else to back you up. I say, trash the studies, and let everyone just do No-S!
