That Guy's Daily Check In

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). Breakfast: leftover chicken (I'm just not an eggs-n-biscuit person)
Lunch: 6 inch Subway sub + Baked Lays
Dinner: 1/2 Chicken Fried Rice takeout

Perhaps not the best choices for food, but first the habit then the food change. All I can say is thank goodness for Coke Zero, which is replacing my 6 Dr Pepper a day habit.

re: shovelglove, I've been doing that for a month or so, decided to try the diet thing too. 14 minutes today.

Forgive me for not using my name here, but believe it or not I have an Internet Stalker from a dust-up on another forum. The fool doesn't seem to have anything better to do than Google for me, and has followed from forum to forum. I'd rather he not be here also.

Thanks for the encouragement. S days are here, hurrah! Time for some Gelato.

I don't know if I'm supposed to post S days or not, but I might as well keep track of eating habits.

Saturday: S-day. Treat was Manwiches for lunch, more than I should have :D

Sunday: S-day. Got up at 1 pm, so 'breakfast/lunch/dinner' came at 4 with chicken enchiladas. Had 3 chocolate chip cookies and a Dr. Pepper earlier in the day for my S-treat.

No Shovelglove, of course.

You will find that the blunders become very incidental and the in the big picture your habits will be getting a great tune up even when you aren't totally perfect..

Walked 119 minutes on the treadmill @ 2.1 miles an hour while watching Serenity. It's easier mentally for me to do this type of thing rather than the Suburban Ranger. 'Movie Ranger' perhaps? :D edit: fancy calculator says that's 4.165 miles

Just finished wrapping a 2.5 lb ankle weight onto the sledge, 10.5 lbs tomorrow :)

Looks like you're doing very well so far!

I think Movie Ranger is a nice Winter activity... Why not?

Here's some totally unsolicited advice...

If you don't hold onto any side handbars while you are walking, you get the most out of that kind of Rangering...
The other day at the club, one of the personal trainers was pointing out a member who was holding the front led panel on the treadmill for stability, and he said that by doing that, he was totally sabotageing his workout...

I suppose that changes the amount of work all of the stableizing (sp?) muscles do... So swing those arms as you walk and stableize from your core....

PS... I love the Incredibles...
That's one of my son's recent faves! LOL...

Only strange thing is that I had several Dr. Peppers with dinner, and immediately got a headache. I don't know if it's related to the sudden sugar intake or not. Surely something to monitor next weekend.

re: treadmill -- I don't use the supports, just walk normally. When I grab the supports I don't think I move correctly, always feels awkward. I'm probably going to have to get the motor rewound, it sounds a bit sick after the increase in usage -- I think it was happier as a towel rack...

It might be.
I stopped drinking soda and now try to control my sugar intake. Generally 2 tsps of sugar in coffee, that kind of stuff.
Since yesterday was an S day, I decide to eat a Godiva brownie with a "here's a little coffee with your sugar and milk Cafe con Leche" from a coffee shop and I had a really bad headache all day. And, some nausea. I have only been No S'ing only since 01/06 so it is pretty amazing how our bodies get used to less sugar without us realizing it. Only when we reintroduce the "offender" does it become evidant/evident. (Sorry, can't spell!)

Interesting stuff: I put my scale away yesterday until Feb 8. As someone who's been failing at diets for 10 years or more, it's amazingly liberating to not have a need to step on it every morning. Right now I'm focusing on body shape changes and building habits.

I am going to call it TV Show Ranger : )
I figure it's better than just sitting and watching the TV show.

I certainly don't think I invented 'watching tv while exercizing" -- there's a whole arena of various kinetic machinery facing a bank of TVs at the gym I used to go to. I just can't stand plodding along staring at a wall, and it's always too dark and cold to go walking outside this time of year. I figure that anything that distracts from the physical side is good for me!

Hey Guy.... I wrote you a bit of a long reply on your other thread..
Just looked over your list of foods... To me they all seem fine NoS wise and I love buffalo wings... But I also noticed that you are eating quite a lot of processed foods... These are often really high in sodium...
So, I will say that my guess is if you perhaps have a lot more water and a meal with at least one nice non-sodium rich veggies and fruit, or a mixed salad with a moderate amount of dressing, I bet you will start seeing some movement... I bet you are retaining a lot of water..

Hey Deb.

Thanks for the thoughts. Fair notice: I don't cook. At all. I stopped even trying after melting 2 pots in a month while making hot chocolate. My oven in this house doesn't even work (although it's pretty!) Everything is microwave-based or dine-out. That's just me, after 37 years I don't think that's going to change.

re: CoD SG, I get up at 5 AM, so I crawl out of bed, flip on the morning news and spin the egg timer.

I wasn't judging what you eat or your choices.. Simply trying to analyze it to see if possibly that might be one of the reasons your weight loss is going semi slowly... Since you posted that "Sloooooow" thread...

It doesn't take talent to drink water to help offset some of the high sodium in the prepared dishes...I bet that would help you..

2. Movie ranger sounds awesome. I do similar inspirational multitasking with audiobooks while doing dishes/vacuuming etc. Thanks for posting the imdb links... my netflix queue has been running dangerously low.

3. It sounds like you're being honest and strict with yourself and doing remarkably well. One more day to the big 21... don't forget to post to the "club" thread.

Regarding the prepared stuff: I'd say don't worry about it for now. You're doing the right thing by focusing on these big structural "mealing" habits. At some point it would be good to cram some more displacing fruits and veggies in there, but you're undertaking so much as it is that it might be dangerous to start with that now.

Our bodies can really fluctuate several pounds up or down..
If you aren't eating that much, and you were used to more, and if you aren't taking in enough water, your body, which is now being asked to change food intake and up the exercise, may be saying, in it's own way..
I must cling to life, and therefore, I will cling to these pounds...

I'm sorry you feel so down.. Yes.. Negative results do sometimes happen, but I guarantee you that they aren't permanent results..
I really suggest in your case, that you stay off the scale for a good few weeks and just totally focus on all the good stuff you are doing...
In addition, you might just want to have some pizza now and then..
This isn't a diet about begrudging you your favorite foods...
But keep in mind that if you step on the scale every four or five days, you might psych yourself out...
Can I also suggest that your weight gain, could feasably be fat converting to muscle mass... You have been shovelgloving daily, and that is one mama of a muscle building workout...

Muscle weighs three times as much as fat.. For all you know, that three pounds gained, could represent something like four pounds of fat lost and three pounds of muscle replacing it...

I'm a massage therapist, and believe me, when I tell you, if I have an active person, even a "skinny" one on the table who has healthy muscle mass, it takes much more effort to position and manipulate their arms and legs than with a flabby non muscular person...

Don't give up... I challenge you to stay off the scale for at least two more weeks and really up your water intake to offset any sodium water retention from all the premade foods (which again, I'm not judging but they are salty as hell) and maybe take your arm and waist measurements to boot...
And by all means, include some pizza slices in your week if you want them..They're allowed and they aren't going to wreck your overall progress..

While on NoS I only lost around 20 lbs the first year, but I lost way more in the inch department...
I didn't weigh myself more than once every two weeks, or even less, each month... I needed to keep myself from getting psyched out...
By psyched out, I mean, I didn't need to see every single weight fluctuation my body took... Over time, real weight came off..
I promise you that you will definitely lose weight some time soon..
Plateaus and even gains are just part of losing weight in a gradual way...
Whatever you thought of before, in terms of speed of loss, why not imagine that NoS might take 10 times as long... Then you won't get so dissappointed.. You might want to see how you do on NOS without Shovelglove for about a month... I bet that you are gaining muscle..
That's good, but you want to see pounds lost here, so that might be an interesting experiment... Maybe urban ranger instead of weight training for a few weeks...

I'm having a very similar experience. I'm up five pounds over the last two weeks but my new "small" pants are already getting a bit loose.

I've been Shovelgloving pretty intensively over the past month. So, going with the theory that I might be adding some muscle, I took a good look in the mirror and found that my shoulders, upper arms, and back are indeed bigger and seemingly more muscular. I think that Deb's theory about exchanging fat for muscle is probably true in my case--perhaps it's also true in yours.

I'm going to stay with my current diet and exercise habits and I'm only going to "officially" weigh myself once a month.

Y'all weren't kidding about the weight fluctuations: 240.5 today, that's a 5 lb swing in a day. Sheesh....

Great news!!! I knew it wouldn't stick....
The only gains I'd worry about are the gradual and permanent ones...
If your long term picture shows a steady gain, then that's when you have to start being concerned...
Otherwise, this diet is a no brainer..
It's not easy, since most of us here have some serious demons and work to do, on changing habits, but the actual thinking about it is minimized to a very easy format.. It truly works... Have faith in it and yourself...
You weren't in the old Yahoo group, so I guess you didn't get to read my post about when I was totally good with NOS one week and it said I gained two pounds...
I smashed my scale with my Shovelglove that day!!!!
Don't let the scale rule you... Let the "rules" rule you...

Sorry about all the pounds swings. I see this too, and I've learned not to worry about it, but that's an easier lesson to really believe once you're down a couple score pounds. Long term, pounds will follow behavior, and your behavior has been great.

Hi Guy,

I am really feeling your pain!! I am 3 days away from my 42nd day of flawless No S. I know I weigh too often, but my weight fluctuates wildly, (probably due to the evil salt intake...) and I think I am down a grand total of 2. Given that, why do I like No S so much? Because it has given me control of my eating for the first time ever. I still believe that over time I am going to see results, and most importantly, it has curbed my sugar intake. I was gestational diabetic twice, so I know I need to watch it. Anyway, hang in there if you can. I still think it's the best thing going. MJ

I've discovered that I really don't enjoy S days that much. I always feel bloated and uncomfortable. The surprising thing is that I don't eat all that much or all that badly -- I just eat like I used to every day. Time to reevaluate the intake on those days

Speaking of reevaluation, I've decided to cut way back on my portions during the week. I've noticed that I'm never hungry (never, ever, as far back as I can recall), so I'll cut until I start feeling some hunger pangs between meals. That should be the optimal point for me.

Oh, I like greedy capitalist pigs -- I happen to be one. I dislike the infusion of cash into romance, and that's driven by the women. I disliked it when I couldn't afford it, and dislike it now that I can. It just cuts way too close to prostitution for my tastes, especially in early stages of relationships... (bet that skews the google ads!)

re: the STBX, she's great and we're fine, we just can't live together and we can't give each other what each needs, so best to split while friends. Not looking forward to the whole dating-in-middle-age thing though...

Yeah... That whole 'look at me, buy me things' trip makes me a little uneasy too. The current trend with some hip hop and rap music doesn't help much either. Case in point:- "my lovely lady lumps, check them out... give me all your money, honey"?! I don't even know who sings it and I don't wanna know either! :x The first time I heard that song, I thought Whoa. Talk about NO self respect! :evil: She really IS singing about how she's a fit looking girl and can get all the guys to buy her things just because she has a nice pair up top. The lyrics are manipulative and demeaning to both sexes. If I had a kid, I'd really rather they listen to Eminem swearing :shock: - at least most of his stuff is tongue in cheek and some of it actually deals with issues of self respect and caring for others.

Anyhow, this has wandered WAY off topic! :lol: Sorry Guy, I really should save these random rants for my own checkin thread rather than filling someone elses up with this stuff. :P

One of my hobbies involves me with a group of guys that are perceived as being well off. It's amazing the differences in the way the ladies react depending on whether we arrive (anywhere) in one selection of vehicles or another. Same guys, same behaviour, but truly different reactions based on the apparent size of the wallet. If only the ladies knew :D

Oh, and the song is by the "Black Eyed Peas". The rest of the album doesn't sound like that song at all.

So sorry about the divorce... no system I can offer for that, just sympathy.

Also sorry that your numbers have not been cooperating despite pretty excellent behavior. The good news is that if you're noticed muscle developement and weight the same, you are burning fat. If that's insufficient consolation and you think you need to see some pounds movement to stay motivated, try making some tiny tweak. Maybe an ever so slightly faster pace for movie ranger (like .1 mph, then another .1 after a week if you don't notice a difference, etc.). Maybe a regular piece of fresh fruit to bulk out some of the more caloric stuff from some of your meals. You've got a great foundation to build on, it won't take much. Also keep in mind, as Freakwitch pointed just pointed out in "general discussion" that winter makes your body hoard fat. Stasis till spring would be, maybe not inspirational, but a success.

Shovelglove is back, felt good after a too-long stint away from it. Still got to grout the tile though :( 21 day weigh-in today is 241.5. I've been as low as 240 even. I started at 246, and on my first checking was 245.5, so some progress finally.

I have noticed body shape changes, my pants are getting loose and I need to cut another hole in the belt soon. Still got the budda belly hanging out there...

I'm keeping track not for the instantaneous weight (which we all know can be truly screwed up) but to keep an easy source of info for my exponentially smoothed weighted moving average chart that I generate every now and then. If you haven't looked at The Hacker's Diet, there's some great tools in it that apply across all diet programs. Using the weighted average helps keep the mind clear whilst the body is fluctuating.

Day 3.7, Failed 240.5

Yep, a failure. However, failure means something different now. In this case it was 2 Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies (my STBX brought them home). In the not-so-distant past, I would have eaten a sleeve of them without thinking about it. 2 years ago I went through 70 boxes in 3 months(!)

So, a failure of willpower, but not all that damaging in terms of actual consumption. Back to it!

It's a slow process for me, but I've always had a very very slow metabolism and everyone in my family is fat. I still have a ways to go (goal - 185, or 'damned good', whichever comes first) but it'll happen.

I find that with NoS you have to ride out periods where you don't drop weight.. They can last for long periods, then you do a little more exercise and have a bunch of good N days in a row and "bam" your down a pound more... Maintaining is far superior than constantly gaining.. I know that this must be frustrating Guy, but just keep on plugging! Spring is finally arriving and you will make the time to move and shake yourself up!!!
That will really help!
Also, you are not your family...
You are creating a new you...
I suggest that you disconnect from that mentality because it won't help move you forward...

Day 3.16: In progress, 239.5

I got to get a new scale. Within 5 minutes, it showed at 240, 239.5, and 238.5. I took the middle one, but I have to get something consistent.

The workplace has started a 'Fitness Challenge' (read: too many fat people are running up the insurance costs), so I signed up. Why not; they're only requiring 30 minutes a day on average for 6 weeks to complete the challenge. Since I'm doing that anyway, I might as well get the brownie points...

So I fell off the wagon, started eating massively and not exercising. I went from 239 on Mar 17 to 267 last week. Crazy.

I just turned 38 this weekend, and was hanging out with my dad. At 59, the man weights 350+ and is in a motorized scooter. I love my pop, but I can't end up like him.

I'm going on a modified low-carb No-S and I WILL knock this fat off of me. I've seen my brother go from 210 to 150 in a year, and I can do the same.

Y'all are going to get tired of this thread being at the top, sorry :)
