I'm upgrading the bulletin board...

Post by reinhard » Fri Feb 01, 2019 11:49 pm

The spam is too much. I can't deal with it. I'm sorry but that likely means the bulletin board will be down for significant stretches this weekend, and there may be lingering issues into next week. Thanks in advance for your patience!

You are a gem to keep this going at all! A few hours without access is a very small price to pay. I wish there was an easy way to donate. Thank you!

Well, we're running the new version. I see a lot of little things need tweaking (and as anticipated the habitcal is broken), but I think it basically works, and it seems to have much better anti-spam features, though I need to spend some time figuring them out and tuning them. Expect some chaos over the next week as I get this sorted out... and please feel free to post any oddities you notice here.

If you have trouble logging in, try clearing your "cookies" for everyday systems. I think cookies set by the old version of the bulletin board may be confusing the new system.

FYI, looks like I can view my public HabitCal, but can't edit it. I think the new bulletin board isn't passing through the authentication credentials to the HabitCal system.

Good luck! Computer/network/software upgrades never go exactly as planned, and always seem to have some unexpected complications.

I wasn't able to login to Habitcal either. I'm really just commenting here so that I am more likely to hear of any updates. Hoping it gets back up and running.

Yes, so good to hear from you again, Deb!

Sorry for furnishing such an annoying pretext, though...

I'm struggling with it now, I hope to have a somewhat hacky solution in place soon... basically, I'm going to bring the old bulletin board back up at another url, clear the boards themselves, and use it just for habitcal authentication. Should work in theory... though you'll have to login separately for habitcal vs. the new boards. I'll post here when it's ready or if I run into unanticipated problems.

OK, I think that habitcal is working again...

Please let me know if you run into difficulties.

Note that the login system it uses is now separate from the new bulletin board.

What this means for existing users is that you will have to login to each system separately, and if you change you password in one system, that change won't carry over to the other.

What it means for new users is that you'l have to create a separate account for habitcal vs. the bulletin board.

This is inelegant, but I'm afraid based on the years I've been putting off upgrading the bulletin board due to not being able to figure out unified login, the best I'm going to be able to do...

Thanks, Reinhard.
Unfortunately, when I try to log into Habitcal, I get an error message that says the board is unavailable.

Sorry about that -- I didn't realize that disabling the boards would prevent regular users from logging in at all (it let me in because I was admin).

I just re-enabled the old boards, but removed all the content. The habitcal seemed to work with a test account.

Try again and let me know?

Thanks for your patience!
