I like to think that hunger means I'm getting into my fat stores, but I don't think it's necessarily true. Our bodies pull out glycogen first, but often AFTER the first rumblings of hunger. Then on the second round, they gets into the fat. But they can also use up some muscle if we aren't moving much.
I've read that some extreme low-carbers say they don't get hungry.
I like getting hungry, but I don't get that way very often because now it takes a lot more than five hours, and I rarely go much longer than that between meals because of my schedule. When I was first on No S, five or six hours would get me a lovely feeling of hunger. Now that might happen if I eat a teeny lunch. But that is no fun.

Is it possible that our bodies get accustomed to waiting -say 5 or 6 hours- and that is why we no longer get as hungry as quickly? I definitely Can go longer between meals than I could a year ago but I still get hungry before lunch even though I have an early lunch. Is it because my body expects to eat or because my body needs to eat? I don't know.
Tricky stuff. I WANT to eat at meal time even though I'm often not hungry. But I'm not the "not hungry" where nothing sounds good to eat. I still get some pleasure from the food, but not nearly like when I'm HUNGRY.

I wonder if it is partly psycological. Before lunch, I'm in a class that moves at a snail's pace and is sooooo boring (I'm a paraeducator at the middle school level) Lunch is a pleasant social event and I'm often hungry even though it is only 4 hours after I've had breakfast. Dinner is a good 6 or 7 hours later and I'm fine waiting to eat with the family. (Also a social event) Although there is a period of time after I arrive home that I'm vulnerable to snacking, it's pretty easy to resist or to just have a glass of milk.

Thursday SUCCESS
This evening I went out for a meal with my friend. I had a lentil burger in a 'brioche' bun, and some chips (fries) - and a glass of lager. It was just right - the bun was light, the burger was home-made and very tasty, the chips were lovely too. When the plate arrived I thought it didn't look like much food - but when I had finished eating I found it was just exactly the right amount for me. A perfect No S size meal.

yes, I know what you mean - I see how my weight goes up a couple of pounds every weekend - and even on weekend days I'm eating less than I used to eat! That sort of outing would have been followed by at least a dessert, probably another drink and a coffee!

Saturday is an S day
I don't usually blog about what I eat - but the weekends are quite interesting to me. I find that one of the things I enjoy most about S days is the behavioural freedom to do things like lick spoons whilst cooking, eat with my fingers, go back for more - just generally allow myself to be a bit untidy about how I'm eating!
6am - coffee, toast and peanut butter
10am - coffee, 2 crumpets with butter (in cafe after a 5k run)
1.30pm - tea, 3 crumpets with butter and Marmite (at home), half a 100g bar of milk chocolate with praline filling
during the afternoon - the rest of the chocolate bar and a mug of tea
7.30pm - fat-free potato hash with veggies (onion, aubergine, corn, lettuce, tomatoes) and ketchup, fruit salad in juice, decaff coffee
It feels like I've eaten loads - but actually I only ate four times with one snack in the afternoon, and the chocolate was the only sweet thing. That surprises me.
I 'control' the chocolate by deliberately choosing a 100g bar (not the 200g or 250g bars!). The butter can be a problem for me - so I cut the 250g into 50g pieces, wrapped them individually, and put all but one in the freezer. So 50g is my allowance for the weekend - with the crumpets which were a crave I had during the week. Strangely, at the cafe this morning, I didn't have enough money for a cake, but I had enough money for the crumpets and butter! So I got my crumpet fix twice today (the home ones were the nicest!)

Sunday is an S day
It's been a bit of a carb-fest of a weekend this week. Sticking to my No S habit and waiting to see what happens long-term. With all the Xmas foods now appearing in the shop it's kind of tempting to start wanting to eat 'treats'. (interestingly neither the halva, nor the crackers were on my shopping list when I went to get groceries on Friday - they were extra things I picked up on impulse.)
After I finished blogging yesterday, I opened a box of savoury crackers and had a handful, then a packet of Halva which I had with a cup of hot chocolate to drink in bed, watching a DVD.
Today I woke up with a sinus headache and feeling a bit queasy.
Breakfast: 1 crumpet, butter and Marmite, tea
Mid-Morning: hazel nuts, raisins, chocolate buttons, chocolate-covered coffee beans, decaff coffee
Lunch: nut roast, potatoes, cauliflower, more of the Halva and a decaff coffee
Afternoon: most of a 170g box of savoury crackers...... just couldn't stop!
That might be it for the day - I sure have 'spoiled my appetite' for dinner! (it was planned to be a corn on the cob with some chilli butter)

Looks like you're doing great! Sorry you're getting bad dreams though.
I really like your idea about dividing the butter up into weekend allowances! I already only buy small chocolate bars. I already keep my bread in the freezer - which means I can either toast it or defrost a daily allowance (things can all go to pot when my SO defrosts a whole loaf!)

yes, I've got two crumpets and 50g of butter defrosting right now - Sunday's 'treat'!
I ate 100g of fruit & nut chocolate today (if I'd had more, I'd have eaten more) - so that control system is working well. I also enjoyed 120g of Bombay Mix (a spicy Indian snack with lentils and split peas, sesame sticks etc) it has loads of fibre and protein as well as carbs and fat! Again - whole bag was 120g - not 250g controlled snack-fest!
I did also run a 5k this morning - so I got my exercise in!
Once again this weekend, I find that having eaten snacks during the day has meant I don't want my dinner at all. I'm heading for bed with a mug of hot chocolate, a hot-water bottle, and a DVD.
I noticed my S day behaviour changing slightly today. I took a home-made (not by me) chocolate muffin, some salted roasted peanuts, 2 kiwi fruit with me in a snack box to eat after my run. I bought a take-out coffee to drink on the bus, and ate my muffin, the fruit, then only a handful of the nuts.
I went to the shop on the way home and picked up some baked beans (for lunch) and some cheese (for the week) and looked at the sweets and biscuits - and didn't want anything.
I had my beans on toast for lunch, and half of the chocolate. At tea-time I had the rest of the chocolate, the Bombay Mix, and some Jaffa cakes (do you have those in America? they are small sponge cookies with a little layer of orange jelly, topped with a think coating of dark chocolate) two mugs of tea.
That's it for the day. Not brilliant nutritionally - but, you know, for an S day - it wasn't bad. I'm into trying to get more fibre into my diet at the moment - and actually, today, I got over 30g - which is AOK!

Sunday - and a very sane S day........... really happy to be doing so well with this - so nice to be free of all that 'food thinking' stuff.
Having made my rough plans for my Xmas/holiday meals - it now looks like my brother and his wife might be coming down for Xmas (they will stay in self-catering - not with me as I don't have space). And the first thing was my sister-in-law talking about cooking and food. It will be more challenging for me to stick to my plan if I am eating with others (welcome to my world I hear you say!) I've been on my own for quite a while so don't usually have to deal with that one!

I've started collecting cake
at work - cake regularly appears - and I've taken to saying 'can I take a piece home?' (instead of eating it there and then) - the answer is always 'yes'.
This is the second week that I've managed to collect some cake to enjoy on the weekend! It's quite interesting to see how much food comes into the office - free for the taking really.
I'm working on adding more fibre into my diet - doing a challenge on Spark People - and my weight has dropped a bit. Might or might not be related, but whatever the reason, it's cool with me!

I've been NoS-ing for 5 months now - and my weight is re-setting itself a little lower each month. No massive numbers, but I'm now about 4lbs down. Painlessly.
As the weekend approaches I've just realised that I don't really have any strong cravings for things this week. I will buy my regular Saturday bar of chocolate! I have three small squares of home-made cake in the fridge, and some Saffron buns in the ice-box - I'll probably defrost two of them for the weekend - and I'll defrost 50g of butter, which is also one of my 'treats'! This is becoming so MODERATE! It's a real eye-opener to me! In the back of my mind I was considering buying some crisps (potato chips) but then wondered if I really wanted them? Maybe some nice mashed potato would be just as enjoyable - perhaps even more enjoyable?

Saturday - S day
I'm very happy to see my weight hitting 8stone 8.25lbs three times this past week - hoping this is a new 'set-point'
I enjoyed my bar of 100g chocolate whilst reading a book this afternoon. I DID end up buying some Pringles - and surprised myself by only eating half the tube. I know that that's quite enough - but being able to stop at half was good for ME!
I have eaten two of the three bits of cake I collected during the week. And, like the last couple of Saturdays - I've skipped dinner as I'm not hungry for it after eating my snacks during the day.

Monday SUCCESS
I'm doing well with the No S - almost a whole month of SUCCESSful days. And I'm not craving any of the snack foods that lurk in my environment at work!
However, although it's not hard, it's not without effort. This morning I really felt quite hungry around coffee-time - but I know that I can eat my lunch at 12 o'clock. This is my own rule - no matter what time I have breakfast (usually around 6am) I don't allow myself to eat my lunch until midday. I ate it on the bus today, on my way back to the office after visiting a client.
Once lunch is eaten, I seem to be OK until dinner time - which I really relish, but am not starving for it.
I've noticed that I've stopped needing to chew gum after I leave work. Leaving work used to be an eating trigger - but that does seem to have gone. I still carry the gum, so it's an option for me - but I'm not using it much at all now.
I had a cough recently, and bought some cough sweets, mostly for when I'm on the bus as it's embarrassing to be coughing on the bus! Again, in the past, I'd have had them all by now - because they're sort of 'candies' really. But I've just had one or two - just when I've had a cough on the bus - and I'm carrying them in my bag without any problem.

Nice to see that you're doing so well, Rawcookie, and that it just gets easier and easier for you.
Heh, my mealtime policy is kind of the mirror image of yours... no matter how late I eat breakfast (even if it's 10 am), I can eat my lunch at whatever time I want to (even if that is 11 am), supper is whenever I can get to it and am hungry for it, but the big rule is that after that there is no more eating until breakfast. Nice we can do NoS with a schedule that suits our individual needs!

Thanks for your comments Sonja - I totally agree - it 'fits' everyone differently.
I am so thankful for my No S habits today. I felt very disappointed when I found out I hadn't got a job I'd applied for - there was a bountiful supply of cookies in the office - but I didn't have a single one. The thought of a 'red' day was the prohibitor. I ate my lunch at about 1pm. Then I made myself a kind of mocha mid-afternoon. I put a spoonful of drinking chocolate powder in the coffee and the slight sweetness did 'comfort' me.
I went for a good run when I got home - then stood under the shower and washed my hair, put on comfy clothes. THEN I cooked my dinner.
This was so empowering - prior to No S I'd have stuffed my face with chocolate and stuff and wallowed all evening feeling sorry for myself!

Hi Rawcookie,
Congratulations on a perfect November of NoS!
Interesting comment you made on a check-in thread about providing food for visiting relatives at Christmas. There is always the challenge of saying "no" to people who are trying to push unwanted holiday food on us, but the challenge of providing food for visitors is a different kind of challenge indeed! Are your relatives vegetarian, too? Do you think they expect a lot of rich food and sweets? I hope the planning and preparations go well!
Saved by Soup!
I had a lovely S day on Saturday, but Sunday went 'wrong'. I know it was an S day - and you can't 'fail' as such - but it went wrong for me in that I didn't eat ANY proper food all day! I had a almond croissant for breakfast, then oatcakes with butter and Marmite, I ate a packet of peanut brittle I'd set aside for Xmas, then I had some shortbread at a friend's house, when I got home I ate a packet of savoury rice crackers and several chocolate digestive biscuits. Later still I had a serving of salted, roasted peanuts.
It was probably not as much as I've eaten in the past - but I felt so terrible for eating all those calorie-dense carbs all day.
Today - Monday - is an 'extra S day' for my birthday -and I'm going out to tea with a friend - which will involve cake. The plans for this outing have ended up being more what SHE wants to do, not what I want to do - and I found myself feeling a bit resentful - and eating chocolate digestives! I stopped at three. I started the day with porridge and mango - and I'm eating a big bowl of vegetable and lentil soup at the moment.......... feels good to eat something nutritious!
I don't know how I lived before No S - I felt rotten about my eating a lot of the time. This was a good lesson for me. For me - even on S days, I need to plan what I'm going to eat.

I really hope you had a good day. I'd be frustrated w my friend too. It's suppose to be all about the bday girl, right??
Totally relate to your feelings about eating in an unsatisfying way. I think I need to have a better plan for my S days too.
Hope you had a good day.

Thanks Linda - yes, today was better - back on track and that 'relieved to be back to an N day' feeling! Those three S days put a couple of pounds back on me. I know the scale goes up and and down, but it does confirm my suspicion that I cannot afford to 'let go' of the No S rules too often! My body's too good at storing fat!

I managed to burn my porridge this morning (what a job cleaning that pan was!) but salvaged breakfast by making it a muesli and fruit breakfast instead!
Lunch was delayed as I was out walking until 2pm - then I went into Costa and had a toasted sandwich AND a bag of crisps with my coffee - but it was all 'lunch' (I was starving!)
Dinner is some lentil soup and half a naan bread. Then off to Tai Chi.
I was glad to see the scale had gone back down a bit this morning.

Monday FAIL
I had to cover a late shift at work - so was out of the house from 8am to 11pm and had only taken lunch to work with me. So I got 'caught' mid-afternoon with partly emotional eating - and bought a pack of cheese straws from the baker's shop which I ate walking along the road - my rationale was that I didn't know when I'd next get a chance to eat. I also bought a boxed salad and a plain bread roll which I didn't know if I'd have the chance to eat. I ended up eating the cheese straws at about 4pm and the salad and roll at about 8pm. I wasn't really hungry at 8pm, but knew I wouldn't be home until 11pm - so thought I'd 'better eat'. I'm sure you know the kind of thing. Anyway - it felt quite a reckless evening as a result.

Yeah, I know - my body didn't like the extra calories however - probably because it was all wheaty stuff.
Today I just feel blue.... can't shake it off......and I've had the desire to turn to food (especially sweets). I haven't. I did get a fruit yoghurt to have with lunch, and a little packet of those sort of fruit-leather snacks which have 'no sugar' but are made with concentrated fruit juice, so have plenty of sugar in reality - just not cane sugar. This evening there will be Saffron Buns at evening class as it's our teacher's birthday - and I'm not going to eat one......... I'll bring it home and freeze it. I'm having to be REALLY STRONG to stick to my No S habit this evening - because my blue mood fuels a kind of 'don't care' (WTH?) attitude. But I DO care - and I do NOT want another red today - for one small bun that I don't need to eat. I could actually probably get someone else to eat mine

despite there being home-made chocolate truffles, a tub of Celebrations, a tray of home-made quiche in the office today! I took two of the chocolate truffles and four of the wrapped chocolates and popped them in my lunch-box - now they're in a little container in the fridge - for the weekend.
So far this week, I've got a Saffron Bun, two homemade chocolate truffles, and four Celebrations wrapped chocolates in my weekend stash! And I've a party to go to on Friday evening - which I've already ear-marked as an Non-Weekend S day. I am planning to have my two meals, then enjoy the party in the evening.

Friday's evening party was interesting food-wise, because I didn't really eat much - but it was later than I'd usually eat, and richer than I'd usually eat, and it went down with about three glasses of wine. So I didn't have time to digest stuff before I went to bed, and I had a lot of dreams - and didn't like the feeling of being so kind of 'over-fed'. My appetite has really shrunk in terms of the amount of food I can comfortably eat these days.
Saturday's S day is going fine - enjoyed a cake, some chocolates, am having some frozen yoghurt after my pizza and salad this evening. All good.

hiya! This is only the second time I've done three S days in a row - and I don't like it - my body doesn't like it. I feel over-filled, but sort of under-nourished and 'sick' feeling. My appetite has reduced and got used to three meals a day!
Weight goes up about 3lbs too - it'll be gone by next Friday though.
This makes me more determined to stick to my planned NWS days over Xmas.

Today someone commented on me taking cakes/biscuits etc home - and asked me if I had a little stash, like a squirrel. So I said "yes, I do! if I eat this stuff all week it makes me fat - and so I save the treats up for the weekend and enjoy them on Saturday and Sundays - that seems to work for me". Today someone came back from being on holiday in Cyprus and brought in a couple of packets of special cookies from Cyprus - I took two and popped them in my lunch-box. The person who'd commented agreed that if he doesn't eat properly and then grazes on the rubbish food in the office, he feels rubbish - and then doesn't eat properly etc etc. So I didn't get laughed at actually - but my not-eating, saving-it-for-later habit has been noticed!

yes, it's almost as if 'if you don't eat it right now, you can't have it!' sort of thing..... I'm getting quite comfortable doing this now - it's like, I DO want the 'treat' but I don't want to eat it right at this minute - so can I save it for later? It seems to work - and I don't feel deprived because I'm having my 'share'!

First of all, I hope you feel better. Secondly, I love the concept, and am even loving the words "squirreling away"- laughing out loud right now. The funny thing is that everyone in my area of the office is on Weight Watchers and they make "sweets" that don't look appetizing to me at all. So, I turn it all down, and DONT want to squirrel it away. Maybe someone will be something really yummy looking over these last few weeks of the year and I will do what you do!

It was a small fail (same as 7th December actually) - a Snack between lunch and dinner - savoury.
I'd had a very stressful time at work, and found myself in the canteen of the local hospital at 3pm ordering a cup of tea........ and chose to have a bag of crisps. I was aware of the opportunity to not have anything - it really was a choice.

I did have a good day, thanks. Strangely, I was feeling grotty due to having a cold - and had no appetite for sweet things today! I suddenly realised it was nearly 10pm and felt hungry - so I had a quick home-made guacamole with some granary toast - which probably means I'm going to have to stay up another couple of hours to let that digest! Very strange as I spent most of the day feeling sleepy - I'm now full of beans and it's the time I'd normally go to bed! What's going on?
As it's an S day - I'm going to treat myself to hot chocolate with a slug of rum from the half-bottle I had to buy for my Christmas cake-making! I'm enjoying listening to dance anthems on the radio too! What a cool 61-yr old I am!
And I've another lovely day off again tomorrow - woopee!

The hot chocolate with rum was delicious!
I WAS going to make the cake today, but then realised that it might not keep fresh until Friday (Xmas Day) as it's a vegan, fat-free recipe (Happy Herbivore Tortuga Rum Cake) - so I'm going to make it on Tuesday evening. I've made some raw mince-pie cases (Russell James' recipe: cashews, oats, agave, lemon juice) - ready to fill on the day. I've also made a vegan Xmas Pudding Ice Cream (I bought the ice-cream and added the other ingredients).
Still have a rotten cold and really haven't fancied anything much extra today - I did have some cookies at coffee-time. Apart from that I've had three meals. Oh, I did have a special dessert this evening: a fresh mango, diced, with some vegan ice-cream, a bit of mixed fruit soaked in rum, and a sprinkle of chocolate chips! Felt really decadent. Nice S day.

I'm glad it helps oolala!
There were plenty of possibilities at work today: a huge jar of Jelly Beans that three people spent all day eating and describing the flavours; two packets of mince pies - I didn't have any of it. I did however, get to bring home the last five of the Spanish biscuits that no-one else wanted - and I've put them in a glass cookie-jar at home. They are individually wrapped - so look decorative and won't spoil. Before No S there was no way I could have had anything like that on display without needing to eat them all. I only felt 'safe' when they were all gone!
Tomorrow evening, my brother and sister-in-law are arriving, and my brother is taking us out for a meal. We've chosen to go to an Indian restaurant. After some anguish - I decided to take 23rd as another S day. I checked my HabitCal for the past 6 months and I have had 8 red days in 6 months and 3 Non-Weekend-S days (all xmas-related). So that's less than 2 non-success days a month. Given that perspective - I'm cool about 23rd.

LOL, yeah, WW treats don't sound very appetizing!natj wrote:RC-
The funny thing is that everyone in my area of the office is on Weight Watchers and they make "sweets" that don't look appetizing to me at all.
Rawcookie, I'm just starting to read some of the check-in threads & have enjoyed yours--belated congrats on the beautiful green and yellow calendar in November!
And, thanks for the education--I had to google what a "stone" was!

I actually learned a lot about what kinds of meals were satisfying to me on WW, but all their talk of low -fat and sugar-free and all the "tricks" drove me nuts. I hear they are a lot less point-focused and more well-being focused now. But I won't be going to any meetings to find out.

The 23rd was a meal at an Indian restaurant with my brother and sister-in-law - they are not aware of my No S-ing and I'm not going to mention it! They also do like to eat the sweets and treats.
I put 23rd as an extra S day on my HabitCal. I had just the main meal - but did enjoy serving from the dishes and going back for a bit more of this and that. We didn't have a dessert - just a small square of chocolate served with the coffee. So that day didn't do too much damage at all.
It's Xmas Eve today (Thursday) and I'm taking it as an N day. I'm working - so I have my usual lunch box. This evening I am serving a veggie chilli with baked potato - and will offer a dessert of berries (with ice-cream for them if they want it and plain soya yoghurt for me)

I feel pretty stuffed, but I stuck to No S!
I served a baked potato with a beany veggie chilli, avocado, sweetcorn, tomato, cheese trimmings. I had summer berries with plain soya yoghurt to follow, whilst my guests had chocolate cake and ice cream! How's that for a win?!
I didn't put out any pre-meal nibbles. I did enjoy two glasses of home-made mulled wine, and a decaff coffee to end the meal.
There is plenty of delicious food to look forward to on Xmas Day!

Friday - Christmas and definitely an S day!
But - I didn't eat anywhere near as much as I've done before - I have a house full of snacks and chocs I don't even WANT to eat right now. I've packets of nuts and stuff I haven't even opened - but the use-by dates mean that they can be S day treats for months to come!
I only had one meal today - but had a few chocolates in between - really not much at all.
I've drunk more alcohol than usual - and am craving water!

Monday 28th December SUCCESS
I've survived the Xmas weekend - enjoyed the trifle and chocolates. Today is an N day. Last night I packed away any left-over sweet stuff. Ditched the last of the trifle. Tried to prepare myself for going back to normal today.
The first thing I caught myself doing was nibbling a few salted nuts while I was making coffee and thinking about breakfast. (I didn't count the day as a failure because of this). I stopped as soon as I realised what I was doing. I had some toast for breakfast, with peanut butter and banana - two cups of coffee. Then I jotted down my Lunch and Dinner plan for today. My next S day will be Saturday 2nd January.
later: I had an interesting day food-wise in that I managed to eat things I was craving, whilst containing them within my three meals.
breakfast: 2 slices wholemeal toast with peanut butter and banana
lunch: a cheese & veg pasty eaten whilst walking on the beach
dinner; brussel sprouts, 2 vegan sausages, 2 toasted crumpets with butter, one raw mince pie (only has a drop of agave in it - not really sweet)

Wow ! You made it through all the holiday celebrating in great shape (literally)
I, too, ditched all the candy and fudge - well I stuck it in the freezer but it will get thrown away. Still have a big batch of chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies - my husband eats one a night (who eats one cookie anyway?) I suppose this will continue until he gets tired of them and/or they get stale.
I am really looking forward to the new year - plan to rededicate to No S principles, not necessarily for weight but for the structure and control it gives me - I am a control freak
Happy New Year to you and yours.

Today I faced a job I've been putting off: figuring out my budget for the next month. I've been doing a temporary secondment for quite a while, but am now reverting back to my original post and salary which is a BIG drop Things are going to tough again.

Thursday 31st - New Year's Eve and I went there's a lot of emotional stuff on NYE which I underestimated!
Here's my December - I had three reds on my HabitCal - so no medal for me for December - but for my first No S Xmas I'm pretty happy with the result.

Thanks Merry!
Sunday I had a banana shake for breakfast, and a raw sunflower seed pate, with grated carrot and chopped tomato piled onto Romaine leaves - my first raw food of 2016.
I had two packets of potato crisps (chips) mid-afternoon. I bought a 6-pack of plain crisps with the intention of keeping them for an occasional addition to lunch. Crisps have been a food I have not been able to keep in the house without troughing the whole lot. I had 'a packet of crisps' on my shopping list - but in the supermarket I went to, there were only multi-packs. As I picked them up, I wondered whether I could keep them in the house without scoffing the lot - did I trust my No S habits were strong enough now? It was, I suppose, a bit of an experiment.
Today I had a packet mid-afternoon, as a snack (it's an S day). Then I wanted another packet - I checked the calories (132) and decided I would have a second packet (it's an S day). I tried to figure what it was about them that made them so irresistible. I know about the fat and salt thing. The plain ones only have potatoes, sunflower oil, salt. I could EASILY have carried on eating them. But I decided not to. I stopped after two (even on an S day) - and I had a banana to break the salty chain. Maybe I was able to do this due to my No S habits?
Apart from this, I didn't eat much on my S day. I think I should keep crisps out of the house - or at least only buy one single-portion packet at a time. I'm interested to see if I can ignore them Monday - Friday.
