Re: ladybird's check in
November has been a bit more difficult than usual, with a week of mostly failures which is unusual for me nowadays. My mood and energy have been down, and any attempt to eat lightly enough to lose any more weight has made things worse. However, I have maintained my weight to the extent of not going above the top of Octobers weight range which I am happy with. I did have one pleasant surprise - I tried on a pair of summer trousers I own which have been too tight for me to wear, and they are now a comfortable fit.
I have gone back to writing down my food for every meal, something which I abandoned as unnecessary a little while ago.
Nov weight - 137 - 139.

Sorry to hear you have had a difficult month. Great news about the trousers. Sometimes I think our bodies change composition.
Consistency in eating will keep you on the right track.

Re: ladybird's check in
Despite having a tough month, you managed to maintain, which is huge, AND fit into smaller trousers - well done. If we can use our habits to keep ourselves on an even keel even in challenging periods, that is one of the most important things we can learn from No-S. Hope December is kinder to you!

Sun 12 - 2 meals plus far too much grazing
Mon 13, Tues 14 - success. After more failures, I am making a determined effort to eat larger meals earlier in the
day and trying to not even think about my weight. That means calorie counting - to make sure I eat enough, and
to give me incentive to plan ahead for meals. Also not weighing myself, as that is part of trying to lose weight.
The alternative seems to be at the moment out of control eating every time I undereat even a little, a sure recipe for
putting back on the weight I have slowly lost over the last year.
On the plus side, my mood and energy levels have recovered to where they should be. This morning I will be going for a walk and then getting on my electric bike to go food shopping.

Congratulations on the smaller trousers!
I definitely relate to your struggles this month! Do you think writing down all your food is helping? I have been having similar issues and I'm not sure what will get me out of the rut I seem to be stuck in. Or the weight gaining incline rather.

Re: ladybird's check in
Hi Pink - I stopped writing down my food - frankly, I just couldn't be bothered. And the calorie counting was just briefly, to give me an idea of how much I was eating. The main thing that is helping at the moment is having big enough meals and not trying to lose weight. This means more forward planning and cooking ahead, making sure that I go shopping and having food already prepared when hunger strikes so that I have a proper meal. The grazing urge seems to have abated at the moment. I've have been doing lots of walking which makes me hungrier, but really helps my mood.

Re: ladybird's check in
You have struggled this month but it sounds like you are working to get your body to trust that it isn't going to be underfed anymore, so that it doesn't send you those binge urges. This makes so much sense! Hang in there!

Re: ladybird's check in
Oh, I see. Thanks for answering! I have never been able to keep up with writing down my food either. yes having big enough meals is so crucial for me! But having them not be too big is also crucial! It's such a tricky balance.
Re: ladybird's check in
I suspect it's a tricky balance if we are trying to aim for weight instead of habits and especially for a weight that might be low for our present set point. (I know I am repeating myself.) I have noticed that every time I somehow lose a few pounds, usually by a happenstance of unintended lower eating, an old tape kicks in and I start thinking, huh, if I'm here and it wasn't that hard, maybe I COULD get lower. It just seems that as soon as I think about it, the survival mechanism gets scared. Later eating more suddenly sounds like a very reasonable idea, while also thinking that I can still lose more. But I can't prove that that desire wouldn't materialize just from the lost weight without the thoughts because they just seem to come along with it. Man, this conditioning is STRONG in me. I have tried to wish it away for years, and even went a few years weighing only for a week at a time four times a year. Years before, I even went without owning a scale for a few years. But I just bought one that measures body fat and muscle. I think working on muscle is the real fine tuning I need now. I've been in denial for a long time!
In any case, you are so far ahead of the game in many ways! And thanks for continuing to share.

Oolal I was actually having these very thoughts today. I realize I am always in my head aiming for a lower weight vs stronger habits. I listened to an interview with Reinhard yesterday and it really reminded me of how important it is to aim for habits as progress, not weight. Anyway, not sure if it applies to you too Ladybird but I thought this was a good insight.oolala53 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 29, 2021 5:44 pmI suspect it's a tricky balance if we are trying to aim for weight instead of habits and especially for a weight that might be low for our present set point. Thurs 23 success
Fri 24 - success, although dinner was far too large
Sat 25 - grazing after xmas dinner, not a good idea for my body even if it is the biggest S day of the year
Sun 26 big meals
Mon 27 failure- grazing again
Tues 28 - Fri 31- success, easier because my appetite was noticeably down after the excess food over Xmas.
December summary - not a good month, but I still haven't abandoned the basic framework of 3 meals. That is just part of me now. As far as my weight goes, I weighed in a couple of times at 139. Avoided the scales after the excess grazing because I am still agonizing over the regain of a lb or 2. Definitely need a sense of proportion here.
Jan 1 - in the middle of a heat wave, so went for a walk about 6:30 am for an hour.

It sounds like the framework is ingrained, and that in itself is huge, regardless of whether the scale fluctuates. Smart of you to avoid it for the time being if it makes you agonize. Hang in there!

Thanks Amy.
Sat 1 Jan, Sun 2 - 3 meals
Mon 3 Jan, Tues 4, Wed 5, Thurs 6, Fri 7 - success
Sat 3 meals
Sun 3 meals + supper
After a week of not eating between meals, I feel like I am getting back on track, and got out the scales to weigh myself for a baseline. Up to 142, which is not unexpected. I then put the scales away again.
Even after all this time, eating moderately is still a struggle for me at times. A year ago I decided to do whatever it takes to avoid health related weight issues, as far too much of my excess weight is around my middle. The result for the year was positive on the whole.
For Jan I will be concentrating on the following habits:
3 meals a day. To help me do this, I will be planning ahead better so that I always have suitable meals available. Specifically, this means planning my weekly food shopping ahead of time as a first step.

Re: ladybird's check in
If you can do weekly shopping, my hat is off to you. I have depended on frequent shopping for this and that. I do tend to have the makings of good meals around- actually, I could live off what I have, besides coffee creamer and fresh freggies, for a few weeks at least. I am okay with frozen leftovers. But the habit means I spend too much time on shopping. It's almost like a kind of snacking without eating. Hmm...

Thanks Oolala!
Covid has changed my shopping habits, especially as we are now in the 'let it rip' phase. Finally getting supermarket shop delivered, rest from weekly farmers market plus home garden. Getting my 3rd shot tomorrow, which is a relief.
My eating has actually settled down again for the moment. Apparently my brain thinks I am now at the right weight for me.

Great you are getting your third shot - what a relief! Fingers crossed you don't have too much discomfort afterwards.
Covid changed my shopping and cooking habits, too - I used to be much more of a menu planner and shopped more frequently, and now I improvise a lot more with what I have in the house, and shop less often.
Hooray for your eating settling down and your brain cooperating with you!

Having the habit ingrained does make it easier, especially if you make your mind up to get back on it.
My habits have slipped of late but I decided yesterday to get back in the groove and didn't have any problem doing so.

Mon 11, Tues 12, Wed 13, Thurs 14, Fri 15 - success
Sat 16 1 meal and 3 snacks so far - was out during lunchtime, hence lunch divided up. Too little as well, hence a snack when I got home. Broke my almost perfect 3 meal a day run - but dealing with so-called imperfection is part of moderate eating. And a bit of leeway is what S days are for.
Thurs 14 -
Have been hungrier than usual the last few days, so having bigger meals. Takes a little while to catch up and reduce my hunger to manageable levels once I start getting over hungry. I realise this is not a problem for some people, but I have always been like that - getting very hungry if I reduce my food intake below what I usually eat. However, I have managed to keep to the 3 meal a day pattern, an important thing for me to do to keep my eating and therefore my weight under control.
Some people have had success in managing hunger by going low carb, but that is not for me. I start feeling loopy and spaced out and then weepy if I don't eat enough carbs. I prefer to reduce my fat intake to reduce calorie intake, although I still eat enough fat with each meal to keep me going to the next one. Not enough fat and I get really hungry.
What I do do is avoid processed food, also known as industrial food products, junk food or ultra processed food. That is food that is specifically designed to get me to eat as much as I can of it, while at the same time providing lower amounts of the nutrients and phytochemicals we need. I am quite unequal to the battle when it comes to that sort of food, so I avoid temptation by not buying it in the first place.
I really enjoy my meals - I think that is a very important factor in maintaining any sort of diet. I have a basic diet of home cooked food made from single fresh/dried/frozen/canned ingredients plus vegetables, fruit and herbs from my own garden. I allow myself whatever I feel like eating at the time from within these guidelines. So it might be a meal of cold meat and salad, or a hot meal of rice, lentils and vegetables. I eat a lot of olive oil, which my state produces in abundance.
Occasionally when I am out socialising I might eat something that is not part of this basic diet, but that is not a regular event. When I do, I enjoy it. I don't eat for the sake of it on social occasions, but choose food that is worth it. I should add that I do have food restrictions for health reasons, so that puts another brake on social eating as well as a reason for eating home cooked food.

Re: ladybird's check in
Something else I wanted to say - I don't worry too much about the no seconds part of No S. If I start being strict about no seconds, I just end up getting too hungry between meals and having snacks instead. So I allow my self careful amounts of seconds if needed to feel satisfied, but keep aware of how full I am getting. Earlier this year when I was food logging, I drew a line on the page after I had finished writing down my food and I had decided I had enough. Only a psychological barrier, but quite effective.
As one of the reasons for my excess weight was eating a meal and then continuing to graze afterwards, it was certainly necessary to find some way of bringing a definite end to a meal.

Sounds like you eat very healthily for you! I am still working on the no processed foods thing. I am the same way when it comes to low carb, but I also need a good amount of fat to feel satiated. I also can't let myself get too hungry or I will have rebound hunger in a major way.
I like your adjustment for seconds. I still sometimes struggle with the no seconds part of No S. Its a tricky balance of eating too much at one meal or not enough and then needing a snack. Sounds like you have found a good way to handle it.

i feel like i eat v similarly to you lady but i don’t eat much meat. i really love veggies and fruit and whole grains but i just eat too much of it i guess. i also have my weaknesses—wine, chai, cat cookies!
sounds like you’re doing well though. i love that you allow 2nds if needed. i think that would really help me stick to nos because i feel a little panicky about the 1 plate rule. seems so final?

I have been having rather bigger meals these last few days than usual. After all this time I still find my anxiety about how much I am eating rising when I do this. I remind myself that a few bigger meals won't lead to my putting back on lots of weight and that the best thing I can do is relax and trust that my eating will soon settle back to normal.

Mon 16, success
Tues 17 success- misjudged how much I needed to eat for dinner in spite of having seconds so went to bed a little hungry which I don't enjoy. Not good for sleep quality either. Outdoor exercise in colder weather has increased my energy needs.
Wed18 - today I will make sure I eat enough. I had been thinking about having another go at the seconds rule, but this is not the time. (My definition of success is that I have had three meals with no snacks, grazing, pre or post meal nibbles. I allow seconds if I feel like a meal wasn't enough, although I rarely allow seconds for the first meal of the day.) Success- 3 good meals, didn't go to bed hungry .
Thurs 19 Fri 20 success
Sat 21 3 substantial meals
Sun 22 3 meals

Sunday May 15th: S Day
Monday: Success, Tuesday: Success, Wednesday: Success, Thursday: Success, Friday: Success

Saturday wasn't an ideal S Day. If you could fail an S Day, I would have failed Saturday. I'm still hanging in there. I can't expect everything to be perfect all the time. Today (Sunday 22nd) was easier. I now know I need to eat a bigger breakfast and lunch. It just takes some experimenting. I hope everything is going well for everyone else.

Mon 23 Tues 24 success
Wed 25 overtired and hungry during afternoon, but managed to distract myself enough to wait for dinner. Success
Thurs 26 Fri 27 success
Sat 28 3 meals, found myself tempted to do some grazing instead of finishing lunch. Probably because I was feeling a bit under the weather. I reminded myself that that way lies madness and resisted. Much easier to resist nowadays after so much practice.

It sounds like the last week of May has gone well for you, although I am sorry to hear you've been feeling under the weather - hopefully nothing serious! You are right, though, with practice it does get easier to resist the urge to graze. Enjoy your Sunday and good luck with next week!

Mon 6, Tues 7 success
It's a good thing that my definition of success is fairly loose ( 3 meals a day with no grazing)
because I have had a few meals lately where I have realised after that I had eaten too much.
As long as I stick to the 3 meals tho I feel ok about my eating. Such things always settle down by themselves as long as I don't invest too much emotion in them or start trying to compensate for overages by restricting.

Re: ladybird's check in
There are 3 things I do to help me be a successful NoSer
Practice eating 3 satisfying meals a day consistently
Keep tempting food out of the house
This has been a work in progress over the last few
years as I gradually removed the last few foods I was
having trouble with. This doesn't mean that I won't eat
particular foods ever again, just that they don't come
home with me.
It is quite possible that I will break this rule at some
stage. However, ultra processed foods are no longer
part of my life.
Consistent exercise, more for my mood than burning calories

Fri 17 failure - had my mind on other things for a couple of days and forgot about planning my food ahead.
As a result, ended up having a snack before a rather delayed lunch.
Success depends on continued self monitoring. Yesterday (Tues) I broke my usual practice of dishing out just what I intended to eat. Was sitting with my mind on a screen and mindlessly popping a bite into my mouth when I realised that this is just what I used to do . That brought a quick end to my meal .

I agree and find myself in a similar place. I was quite stressed last week and had a stirring of the old feelings. I gave in a little to them but not with the usual high carb high sugar foods and they passed uneventfully.

Glad to see that the beat goes on. I, too, rarely eat ultraprocessed foods. They just don't have enough of a payoff anymore. I don't have the appetite I once did and feel I need to be more selective. I wonder what life would have been like if that had happened decades ago? It was all out of fear back then. Oy!

Re: ladybird's check in
Another reasonably good NoS month.
Weight down a little more, range 136 - 139 lbs.
My weight is back to where it was in October 2021. I reviewed my thread to see if I could determine what happened to derail my eating and avoid repeating the same mistakes.
The first change was that I started getting hungrier, enough to lead to unplanned snacks. My mood and energy levels went down, accompanied by snacks, grazing and some poor food choices.
By December, my mood and energy levels had recovered.
My interpretation is that I had actually gone a bit below what my brain saw as its preferred weight, hence the increased hunger and decreased energy.
What I plan to do if this happens again is to avoid anything that feels like undereating until my appetite and energy levels are back to normal. That means deliberately eating bigger meals and not waiting too long to eat.
This is of course the opposite of what I used to do, which was try to restrict further in a futile and counterproductive effort to control my eating. Hooray for the NoS framework.

Three meals a day - not too little not too much, but just right
Re: ladybird's check in
I think you are so wise. I think a lot of failure out there is because people challenge their set point unnecessarily. There are some cases where it is justified, but even then, it's sure can be a tug of war.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks Oolala. I am not sure about the wisdom part, although I like to think that I've learned something about how to live a happier life. But I am fairly analytical.
As for the setpoint thing, I am hopeful that I have managed to lower mine by a few pounds, but time will tell.

Nice! I love how you look back to figure out what was going on at certain points in your journey, and I agree that the body sometimes has to get used to a certain weight range before it will let you move further, this has been my experience as well.

This happens to me too with the lower weight and increased hunger. I totally agree with your strategy to avoid anything that feels like undereating. It's hard sometimes isn't it after years of dieting? Thank goodness for the No S framework! It helps so much! Sounds like you are doing well!

Re: ladybird's check in
Mon 11 - success sort of - didn't eat enough dinner & was hungry during the night, & very hungry when I woke up. Trying to eat more today. While I am better nowadays at judging how much I need to eat thanks to eating 3 meals and no grazing or snacking, I still get it wrong sometimes.

Re: ladybird's check in
Doing this is definitely more of an art than a science, isn't it? And learning to make adjustments along the way, as well as listening to what the body is telling us, is a big part of it.

Re: ladybird's check in
Mon 18, Tues 19 success sort of- again got my dinner size wrong, leading to getting uncomfortably hungry. This is not good, if for no other reason than that my aim is to establish sensible moderate eating habits, not starve myself into weight loss.
Wed success - had a couple of deliberately larger meals until I had lost that tired, strained, undereating feeling. It only takes a meal or two before I get that feeling, one of the reasons I am a slow loser. Obviously fasting is not for me, it just makes me feel too unwell.
Thurs - back to normal, a morning walk with a walking group and home to a late breakfast.
Failure- after dinner snack
Fri success.
Sat 3 and Sun 3 meals

Re: ladybird's check in
Mon success. Was briefly tempted to have seconds after breakfast. I don't usually have seconds then, and this time it felt like the start of the slippery slope into overeating, which leads to grazing and then becomes outright bingeing. So I put the thoughts of seconds aside and declared my meal over.
Tues, Wed , Thurs Fri success
Sat 3 meals
Sun 3 meals

Well done avoiding the slippery slope. Especially at the beginning of the day!

JuLy - weight down a bit more, 133 - 136 lbs
Being more consistent with no snacks saw my weight drop to its lowest since starting NoS, although it didn't stay there.
August
mon 1, Tues 2, Wed 3, Thurs 4, Fri 5 success
sat, sun 3 meals
