This is a good point - a time based system is preferable for the long haul. If you are concerened about targets then go for reps, however this is ultimately self-defeating in that you become obsessed with the target. Any less than your last total is a failure. Take time off due to illness and you'll...

Tips for self-study?

I'd like to get clued-up on things for work (programming) and certification seems to rear its ugly head every time. But with all the other work, family, exercise commitments I'd wind up a mind-numb drone. (Done it before) So I'd like to do the study but without the added stress of exam pressure i.e....

I started this but hit a plateau around 30.

So the goal approach is wrong, but using it to find your level is perhaps the way forward.

Instead of buying the latest, shiniest 'thing', go for an out-moded yesteryear version and wring the absolute most out of it. Examples: 1. Computer - get an old computer for next to nothing and put Linux on it - you'll probably achieve the same performance as a new computer with Vista (disclaimer: I...

Like the idea - very adaptable. Sounds almost like a Scrum methodolgy with regular 'sprints' (geeks will know what I mean!). I think it describes what we are all trying to achieve - finding a non-bewildering way of actually getting everything done that we think of, instead of wasting those valuable ...

Exercise for fun?

I like the idea of ranger-ing as it is totally non-competitive. I usually fall into the trap of 'training' when out cycling - although for what I've no idea really. It's addictive to get the endorphins going by this training, but it also gets to be destructive, both in terms of fatigue and the naggi...

Well I have posted on this before and I have been a bit hit and miss with it so far, but I reckon this time.... Anyhow, you simply have to make it work for you - no one is policing this for you! My solution is up to 2 a day usually, with up to 4 on one night a week if you wish. The pay off fr...

I know, I know - easier said than done. Plenty of acquaintances have January off the booze after Christmas over here, but that's probably due to financial pressures and excessive British bingeing. I doubt that one would have the motivation to take a month off if only drinking in moderation to begin ...

"Easy Rider"

I love cycling. I always aim to go for a steady ride, but invariably end up pushing it and return home a sweaty, shaking wreck. This is good in one way, but inevitably I always ending feeling jaded or burnt-out after a while, as I'm not really that athletic underneath it all. A bunch of us do some a...

Glass Ceiling: "One Off"

I came into this site via the Glass Ceiling and have found it inspirational (even though I haven't stuck to it always... yet...). One thing that concerned me was that, as a former heavy drinker, my liver may need some rest periods rather than the constant steady-trickle of alcohol. So, I aim to modi...

If you are coming into this system after having caned the booze for a bit, would you recommend an abstinence period to flush out the system and if so, how long for?

Yes and every other site that tries to address this problem has a depressing, serious quality that makes me feel like I need a drink after I've read it. Glass ceiling fits for me because I knew that I had a problem but it wasn't bad enough to stop completely, yet it wasn't good enough to carry on re...

NOS and Glass Ceiling

I started visiting here after following a link for glass ceiling, thinking that my boozing was out of hand (like most here in the UK!) So, anyhow, I've had a massive change of lifestyle with the glass ceiling. It has taught me moderation and got me to appreciate what I drink rather than habitually t...

Good point re concentrating on speedo - however aiming to keep the speed should be sufficient - not necessarily talking about anally-pedantic monitoring.

I have cruise control which helps in these situations!

I realise that I may have painted myself as a humourless road safety campaigner here but, truth is, I was as bad as the next guy when I drove. Sometimes I still can be - need to practice what I preach more. I do a bit of fitness cycling so you get to see some, erm, interesting driving over he...

Cheers. This is not some personal 'crusade' or anything - far from it. I used to be pretty reckless when I drove, but being older (and now a parent) you start to see things differently. Just a suggestion of a new everyday habit which could make a difference perhaps? Anyhow, it's up to the individual...

Stick to Speed Limits

Can't think of a snazzy title yet - '"The Speed's the Limit" or something equally cringeworthy. In the UK speeding and congestion on the roads is abysmal. Everyone thinks speeding is bad, congestion is bad - but they only want other people to slow down. There are a large number of speed or 'safety' ...
