I read of a woman who bought a small used coffee table and put that on her regular desk. That was her raised desk and she said it worked out well. It might take some doing to find the right size. It was cheap! I have an old tall desk (43") where I put my keyboard and the monitor. I use it only at ho...

Sounded lovely despite the cancellation. And nice that you didn't get upset with yourself over the small fail. In the circumstance, I think I would allow myself to take my portion and wait to start eating until everyone had served herself, then decide to add a bit more before the first bite and stil...

I think it's rather typical to go through those times of eating easy, heavy stuff. Humans are wired to go for the most calories for the least work. I'm still perplexed when it happens, but so far, I always come out of it, too.

I'll second the emphasis on putting weight loss on the back burner. It just brings in an element that complicates the process. If you have to lose weight AND not binge in order to feel successful- well, I think you see the problem. You've linked two things that are not necessarily dependent on each ...

Wanting to avoid regret is a great motivator, once you get the ball rolling. It's amazing how often we forget; it seems it takes countless experiences of feeling deflated before we start making the tough decision often enough to create momentum. I'm coming off a few months of having been off the pat...

Liz, welcome back! And it'a not a mirage. Food does mitigate some of the stress chemicals, but as you say, it's only temporary AND doing it increases the strength of the habit. Only you can say if it's better to put up with the discomfort. There's going to be some at one end or the other.

I bet three weeks of no sugar (which is even stricter than the rules ask for) is a BIG victory. It was for me just not to have sweets. But a blessed one. I aspire to keep to it indefinitely.

Jenji, that is not an unusual reaction. That's why it's so good to just have the concept of systematic moderation be the touchstone rather than appearance or even weight loss. Do I want to live systematically moderately with food or keep letting all kinds of haphazard influences send me careening ar...

Neurolinquistic programming. It's been pooh poohed, and I'm no big advocate, but it says that it's good to pair a kinesthetic cue with a thought. If you do it enough, then even just the touch cue can be enough. That idea may not be confined to NLP. It kind of makes sense. Certainly the urge to eat h...

Coffee is controversial. Not everyone regards it as a health detractor. There were articles back in 2015 and 2017 that showed correlations with drinking a few cups a day to longevity. But it depends on how you feel it affects you. And I agree that unless you know it's a hazard for you, don't try to ...

I gave up baking sweets years ago. I was tired of trying to prove to myself I could do it and then being wrong. I just read on a site yesterday that hunger is not a sign that outsider food is needed. It’s a sign to check resources; does the body go looking for calories from outside or from inside, from its liver, from its fat stores? It will normally prompt going outside because its DNA mandate is to preser...

The traditional French are more likely to think of big portions as bad, as well as fast food and shiny-packaged snacks. And not savoring food. Things, sadly, are changing.

Theoretically, you could have virtual plated, unless you knew that you would likely eat more than you would have on one plate.

You have two days per month you can designate as special S days.

In any case, I bet there were some scrumptious morsels to enjoy!

Jenji, that sounds like something from NLP. It's a good tactic. I used a lot of the thought recommendations from Judith Beck's book, or variations of them. Such as: "If I give in to this urge, I'll keep this 40-year overeating habit going. I really don't want to live like that for the rest of my lif...
