Leafygreens, hi! Nice to see you. Thanks for the response. It does taste pretty bitter, but I've gotten into tea, so to me it doesn't taste much different than that. I have also read about health benefits of pure cocoa, so I think drinking it in hot water could be a good distraction from chocolate ...

A coworker is on some other diet, but she told me she does unsweetened cocoa powder in hot water, and "It takes away my chocolate cravings." I'm back. I've been using liquid gymnema drops for a few months. I chose liquid because it was the same ingredient in the sweet-blocking lozenges being advertised everywhere, but a lot cheaper. Very interesting, Too Solid Flesh -- so it's not just a moderate traditional way of eating but also a rigidly weight-conscious culture that leads to the slim French silhouette, according to this! I like the moderate traditional way of eating, which No S replicates -- not sure I like the other bit s...

alice2002, rather than shifting your S days, remember that you can have ANYTHING you want as long is it is not a sweet, it's only at meal time and fits on one plate. This can be burgers, fries, pizza, chips. If Fridays are a problem then eat something really enjoyable like this, so you don't feel as...

Someone posted an excerpt from a post of Reinhard's on beverages between meals on another thread questioning diet sodas. He doesn't list any hot chocolate, and he does recommend black coffee, but in part of it, he says go easy on the cream and sugar in coffee, so they aren't forbidden. For nearly 4...

Re: Any tips for a newcomer?
Today is my second N day...and so far so good. I'm really looking forward to the weekend, though! Anyone else LOVE sweets, and go overboard at first? I'm guessing that is what will happen, and the last thing I want to do is stress on my S days about that. Any tips for someone in their first week? I...

It depends on the type of bread or muffin. I would call a homemade corn muffin or cornbread (or similar, nonsugary flavor) ok on N days. I would save any kind of store-bought, bakery-made or coffeeshop muffin for S days only. I eat a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast, 1-2 N days a week, because I...

Hi- this is Averyl, the author and blogger. First, this is a very interesting thread! I enjoy reading about people's memories of the 1950s. And to the OP, thank you for your great review of my book. :D Wow! Thanks for stopping by this thread! However, let's also remember that in addition to habit, ...

She lost the 6 lbs or whatever she gained in week. I suspect she would have done that anyway. I think eating from a ramekin might get difficult. Boring was her word. Would you pack your own if you went out to lunch with someone or would you just as for your meal to be served in a ramekin? One of th...

Grammy G, thanks for your post. My childhood (1980s) had normal eating patterns, until my mom went back to work (I was about age 11.) This seems to be when our family eating together and having rules about food went out the window (and my food issues began.) I don't blame my parents because they did...

Re: Dear No S'ers, what would you do? advice needed please
Got a situation going on with my doctor but I need to give some background first. I'm 15st 4lb - that's 215 pounds. 5'3" female with a very small frame. I "should" weigh around 120 pounds, although my own goal is closer to 140 pounds. I'm 51 years old, in perimenopause. I've been No S'ing on and of...

American Women Didn't Get Fat in the 1950s
I have read this Kindle book by Averyl Hill and highly recommend it. Her theory that the reason women were thinner in the 1950s is because they cooked and ate real food, and didn't live in a fat-acceptance culture (politically correct.) She goes through the old medical charts and studies and compare...

Needing some spice in my N-days. I have been stuck in the mode of using sweets as the go-to favorite food when I'm hungry and asking myself "What do I want to eat?" Every time I ask myself that, I want a sweet, and I can't have sweets on N-days, which is severely depressing to me. So I was thinking ...

I absolutely believe that sleep is a cure for obesity. This is all anecdotal but - If I don't get enough sleep, I spend all day wanting to eat. If I go to bed on time, I will not stay up wanting to graze all night. If I sleep enough, I will wake up hungry and ready for a good breakfast. It is better...

Overeating is not common among the multi-generational wealthy in the United States. Good point. This would certainly explain the link between poverty/obesity (not knowing where your next meal will come from.) Although many people today are upper middle class, and have no fear of going hungry... yet...

Yes, we surely don't need all the food we get when we eat out. But the great thing about No S is that we don't HAVE to find healthy restaurants. Though I prefer ones with better food. And I eat so well on my own that I don't feel as pressured to eat well when I'm out. I just like to. Oh, we certain...
