Actually, by not giving in to the urge to eat, which is chemically induced, it will decrease the stimulus-response reaction and the food will have that effect less and less each time you have it. Not that I'm recommending that. Overeating reinforces the connection; moderate eating extinguishes it. U...

Wow. The report of the meals in Guatemala was a great reminder. I traveled in India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal back in the late 70's. Funny. A few years ago I read a book about French style and how to use it to get slim. No S is SO-O-O much smarter than...
I thought it might be fun to have a thread where we could 1) rant about any other system we've tried or run across or 2) feel sorry for people who resort to tactics we know must be or will be painful in the long run. This was prompted by browsing Sparkpeople.com where I am a member (and on a pretty ...

I posted this in another wanna-be thread, so sorry if you see it again. Today marks 7 weeks of No S-ing and I'm feeling good. 'Course I've stuck to other plans that had me thinking I could do it forever and I was never gonna go back to my old ways before. But it's been awhile, so I'm going to enjoy ...

Here's a link of a report about working out after a 20-hour (no eating from dinner to dinner)fast http://www.ttfatloss.com/fat-loss/fasting-for-fat-loss/ and from Brad Pilon who literally wrote the book on short-term fasting BradPilon.com Nov. 6, 2008 "Did you know that it takes 30 to 60 minutes of ...

Working on round 3 of 21-day club. Funny stuff today. Went to a coffee shop to try to work and have lunch. Kept getting kicked off Internet, so I left after I got my sandwich. Very hungry and ate half in the car. Ended up coming back home. Didn't want to finish sandwich but got out some raw veggies....

BrightAngel, you have had an amazing journey and admirable success. You are definitely in the healthy range for your height. I just experimented with your height, weight, and my age on the Halls site. I'd be slimmer than 90% of my peers at your stats. Holy Toledo. I'm just trying to get to the 28%il...

I know this is getting technical, but do you know what your bodyfat% is? I just checked your BMI and you are in the normal range, so it is going to be harder to fight your way down, esp. if you are a mesomorph and naturally have more muscle. Check out this site. http://www.halls.md/body-mass-index/b...

I went to a pancake breakfast fundraiser yesterday and then nibbled on chocolate and such a lot of the day. It is now 9:07 a.m. PST, and I am not one bit hungry for breakfast yet. I'll wait until I am to eat. That's the way Mondays after indulgence are getting to be. I hope I remember that next Sund...

I agree with what the reason is. I'm a teacher and our mealtimes are notoriously short. If I confer with a student, call a parent, or answer even one email, I may likely not get to finish my lunch, which is always a reasonable amount. Even if I forget my lunch and have to go to the cafeteria, it cut...

I also saw an article reporting a study on what cues Americans used to stop eating vs. French participants. The French were more likely to stop because they felt full. (Duh?) Americans used external cues, such as eating during a TV program and stopping only when it was over. It's long been known tha...

Remember, too, that you can drink milk. I'm finding that it makes a big difference for long hauls. It takes awhile to kick in but 8 oz. of 2% or higher fat can tide me over an hour or two. I often make a cafe au lait, heavy on the lait, sometimes with 2 t. cocoa powder and a smidgeon of stevia. Esp....

Thanks for bumping this up. When people talk about not eating dairy or not eating late at night, I always think, but the French eat more dairy than the people of any of the Mediterranean countries, and they eat late, etc. I'm pretty sure Julia was influenced by their habits then, as well as by her o...

Me, too! Here is the text: Hello Maggi, I’m Malia, Michael Pollan's assistant. Thanks for your email and your feedback on the mention of the "No S Diet" in Michael’s new book Food Rules. Michael heard of the "No S Diet" from a reader, who did not mention Reinhard Engels’s book. Michael chose to...

I wish I had discovered No S back in the '70's when I was in college. However, I don't know if I would have believed it then or had the discipline to do it, but it sure would have spared me a lot of suffering. I'm finally thinking in terms of sticking to this for a year as a way to keep me involved....

success Wasn't even hungry for breakfast. I thought I might get hungry, so I brought a piece of bread and peanut butter. I just had coffee with milk all morning and I ended up eating half of "breakfast" with my lunch. Maybe that was funny stuff? I was actually wishing I'd brought something a little ...

Actually, I was thinking it didn't sound like a lot. Besides, you're the one that has to make the decision about what is enough, and it changes. I had one Sunday on which I hardly ate anything despite the fact it was an S day. I just felt full most of the day and didn't want to force anymore in. Oth...

thurs. 2/4 success Fri. 2/5 success. funny stuff: I invited a friend over for dinner and didn't want to try to balance my bread and dessert banana on the lip of my shallow soup bowl, so I virtual plated it. This is further inspiring me, as I have been No S-ing officially since Jan. 1 and the scale is fluctuating downward. I want to keep going not only because this is restoring my sanity but on the off chance that Reinhard will need some low-range weight loss success stories to appear with him on Oprah.

Dang, that was pretty fast! Actually, wouldn't the two of you make an interesting pair: Michael, the food guru, and Reinhard, the habit guru. I've seen your/Reinhard's picture and I've heard some podcasts. I think you/he would make good TV. Especially if you were able to keep the nice mix of being k...
