That time of decompression is so necessary, isn't it? We did a full week here, and then hit the birthdays, so even though we've been out of school nearly three weeks, we're just starting to settle into a summer routine. Love the idea of a train trip. We've taken two in the past few years. I would ta...

Now that I think about it, it's mostly about weight. Then the thoughts about weight eventually lead to 'dieting', what I eat, when, how, how not to...which leads to eating. It always ends with eating. After 40 years, it's a deeply ingrained habit.

Thanks for your input, both of you. A different perspective is very helpful. You've given me a lot to think about. Maybe I can learn to stop chasing that perfect freedom and learn to accept - and maybe even cherish - the imperfect freedom I have, limited though it is. I just seem to be feeling down ...

Also a feeling I know too well. I'm a bit late in life for that kind of thing, too and it concerns me. I'd like to have a boat again. I"m not sure if it qualifies as a yacht - even a mini one. I can't see it happening, though.

I've just been around a lot of people lately. Different from the people I'm usually around. I saw one couple the other day. They sat in front of me, so I couldn't help but notice. She ate for three hours non-stop. All 'healthy' food. He ate a pretzel and drank a glass of wine. I couldn't help but th...

I think you said somewhere that the miniyacht was more of a title rather than an actual thing - but I'd still like to hear about the miniyacht. What did you have in mind?

let me know if you make the torte :) So. I'm thinkin' about not thinkn' about food or eating. I know people who don't. Ever. If they are hungry, they eat. If not, they don't. They don't even think about it. If you ask them, they get a blank look and get all confused and you have to explain since it'...

I am with you on the 24/7 thing. I know it's not as bad now as it was in my dieting 20s and 30s, but it can still dominate my thoughts. I would so love to get to the point where I don't think about it all the time. I"m not sure I ever will.

It's been a busy few days and I know I got totally 'off track' one or two of them. With birthdays and Father's Day, extra days off and trips out of town, it's easy to do. Things should settle down now.

Maybe.

Been out of the loop here, and catching up a bit. It sounds like you've been through a lot lately. It's good to have this place to talk and share - and all the support from the people here. My tip for the week. If you want a really nice chocolate cake, give America's test kitchen's chocolate raspberry torte a try. A little extra trouble, but definitely worth it. We had two birthdays this past week, and I made it for one of them. I think it's going to be my standard birthday cake from n...

It's funny, just yesterday I was saying to my husband how easily I could go back and live there - maybe even back to working at the OU. It was a good life we had, and I am sure that colors my memories of it. But I love how easy it was around the city on the redways - you could go anywhere on foot or...

We do that most years now. It started with a trip to San Diego about five years ago. We did a few small gifts, including a 'beach' frame for a photo from our trip. My kids buy us gift cards for weekends away, and my in-laws pay our membership to a swim/tennis club for the summer for birthday/christm...

Maybe I'm an oddball, and feel free to totally ignore me, but the way I deal with a food I'm craving is to eat it. Whatever it is. Of course, I have been doing this for nearly 20 years, so I've had a lot of practice. The previous 20 years of restricting did nothing but reinforce those cravings - and...

One thing I've noticed lately is how unpopular the idea of 'gluttony' is - or any suggestion that maybe, no matter how 'healthy' our food choices, maybe we just eat too darn much. I saw a conversation on bite counting on another forum. The OP was blasted -mostly by foolish, extreme examples of why i...

I spent years struggling to get to the weight the charts said I 'should' weigh - hating myself, fearing food and feeling like a failure. One day I finally got wise and said 'enough'. Ah, the long stretch to September. My husband still gets paid the last Friday of the month, but the school where I work now divides our salary into 24 installments. It's been a huge relief not having that loooong white knuckle last-week-of-the-month or paycheckless summer.

I have crepes in the meal rotation again - more of the ham and cheese ones. They were really very good. I think there's a reason why it's a standard paring. They just go together.
