Helpful tip...
Insure your crappy computer and then set fire to it!
LOL...
Love,
Deb

Oooh!
Better yet...Smash it to bits with your 16 lb'der!
That would be fun to catch on video!
You could call it "Destructive Movements!"
It does wonders for the adrenaline to smash something with that thing!
Try it!
Love,

Deb

We (my neighbors and I) actually already have the replacement server, but it takes a bit of coordination to swap in... I'm hoping some time this week we'll get it done.
I like the smashing idea. Good combo shovelglove/weekend luddite activity.

Yes
please! LOL..
Every time the board goes down on us, a little piece of my heart dies with it! LOL...
Are you sure your cats haven't figured out how to mess with your comp???
They can be sneaky!

Deb

Re: Destructive Movements with the sledge...
There's a poster on a computer desk at our bank that shows a goose standing in front of a computer, with a sledgehammer hanging down his back (you know, "scratch the back" for shovelglove) and he looks very angry. The caption at the bottom reads, "Hit any key."
How often I've been tempted...

She loves those power cords.
Testing again, unfortunately. Something is messed up with our database.

Another post-crash test.
On the bright side, it's been a while.

Hi Reinhard,
compared to a lot of other 'in my basement bulletin board servers' this one is pretty stable, actually.
Glad it's back up though.

Thanks, but I guess our lucky streak has ended. Just crashed again...

You need to come up with an everyday system for keeping computers from crashing. Now THAT would be mighyl popular!

Another crash... same problem as last time. I think I'm going to actually have to figure this out...
Sorry it was down for a whole day. The timing coincided with Saturday's weekend luddite. I guess the computer decided it wanted to try out weekend luddite, too

Don't worry Reinhard!
This is a free service to us, and we are grateful for when it works!!!
I guess a little ludditing is good for a break anyway..
Have a nice rest of your weekend!
Peace,

Deb

Thanks, Deb!
But I'm determined to nail it this time... I've got two of my super smart sys-admin neighbors on the case (unfortunately, nailing it will probably mean taking the site down for a few hours at some point in the next few days -- I'll post a warning on the main bb page as soon as I have a more precise idea).

OK, my neighber did some magic incantations on the kernel and maybe that fixed it... if not, he has some backup incantations in reserve.

And if those don't work, I still have an 11th level dwarven cleric from my old Dungeons & Dragons gaming days.
If magic incantations aren't the fix, then how about some divine intervention from the Dwarven god of War!

Magic incantations and D&D Geeks rule!!!!
LOL...
I tried to play dungeons and dragons when I was in high school, but was too stoned and drunk to really learn it!
It probably didn't help that the girl who was teaching it to me, made her own beer as a hobby~
LOL..
Peace and Love and Dwarves!

Thanks for the offer, but as I hope you are aware, according to the very un-PC-sounding "Character Race Table I.: Character Class Limitations" on page 13 of the 1978 Players Handbook (also known as The Authorized Version), dwarves cannot be clerics. Only humans, half-elves and half-orcs can be clerics -- or more succinctly, you have to be at least half-human. Half-dwarves aren't mentioned, so presumably humans and dwarves can't produce viable offspring (interesting from a Darwinian perspective).
It's possible that later corruptions of the Orthodox Dungeons & Dragons Rules, the so called "2nd" and "3rd" editions, state otherwise, but this Old Believer does not acknowledge their authority.
Long live E. Gary Gygax!

Poor, sweet, sad, deluded Reinhard...
Ironic that you should mention, in passing, the Darwinian perspective of a dwarf-human hybrid just before noting your own puritanical adherence to a set of outdated,
unevolved, dogma. Funny.
I'd best stop there before hijacking this thread any further. But don't worry, I still have a great deal of respect for you due to all the good your Everyday Systems are promulgating!

another crash. Database corrupted but hopefully repaired now.
