Fruit Any Time

Post by haley145 » Fri Aug 10, 2012 1:00 am

I know I have seen this mod talked about before: FAT (fruit any time). I have been doing this mod for a while now and I was wondering if anyone else does this or has done this in the past. Is it a slippery slope? I have been successful so far, I don't do it everyday but it is nice to have something to fall back on if I need something between meals. Thoughts?

Every time I try it (since it seems sensible) it just seems to open the door for more. It keeps the eat-all-the-time mentality going and that is what I really need to break. Experiment ~ do what works.
I guess this doesn't work unless you actually do it.
Please pray for me

In the book, one of the justifications for not having fruit between meals is because then you might use that as an excuse to have a larger serving of something more dense on your plate at meal time because you feel you would have met your fruit requirement in a snack.

I also agree with reneew. If it promotes consistent moderate eating, continue. If not, don't. But I also suggest getting better at eating enough at meals so that you don't feel the need. Legitimate hunger would be the only need. That vague urge to eat would not. Best ignored.

It would definitely be a slippery slope for me. I stick to mocha or nothing.

Oolala, that is a really good point about putting more calorie dense things on your plate during an actual meal, it is certainly something to think about and I may try to gradually stop eating the fruit at non meal times. Thanks!

If I absolutely need something between meals, I have milk. For me it is a slippery slope to eat between meals, even if it is fruit. A glass of milk may have as many calories as your fruit, but eating versus drinking is different for me. However, everyone is different so do what works for you.

I know I already weighed in but I, too, drink milk (in my mocha) or on its own if hungry between meals. Not only am I unlikely to overdo it (who binges on milk?), it has also been shown to have a satiety quotient similar to water-rich* foods like freggies without reinforcing that urge to chew.

*water rich is a term used by Barbara Rollins who wrote Volumetrics, in which she explained her research that showed that water rich foods add volume to meals. This leads to being satisfied with that meal and the next meal as well.

Oolala, do you make your own mocha? If so, how? I love the stuff!

Sometimes I add a commercial cocoa mix to coffee, but I often make it, too. 1/2 cup coffee made quite strong, 1/2 cup whole milk or a bit less and some half and half, 2 t. cocoa powder, and stevia. Maybe cinnamon once in awhile. Maybe vanilla. Fun!

Ironically, though we are having a heat wave in San Diego, mocha still sounds good.

Thank you, oolala. I will also have a hot chocolate on the hottest days. Comforting goodness.
