New here - I need lots of encouragement!
Hi, A friend of mine told me about the No S diet and she said she lost 6 pounds the first week. WOW! I decided to check out the website for myself. Sounds pretty simple. I have tried a gazillion diets out there from low fat to Atkins. Yup, lost, then gained it all back with interest. I am now at my highest......hesitate to say......286
. I always used the excuses, I have hypothyroid, depression, medications, all kept me from losing. Problelm is I could lose, just couldn't keep it off. So, here I am aproaching 40 yrs old this summer, I don't want it to be at this weight. I want to live another 40 plus years. So hey, what the heck, it just confirms what I had spoken about to a friend a bit ago on what I should be doing to lose weight. Makes sense. I have been trying to get in the habit already of walking now that the better weather is here. So onward I go. I want to lose at least 50 pds before my 41 birthday, that gives me over a year. A pound a week, sounds reasonable. Lisa

Welcome
Lisa,
Welcome to the best diet ever. It's not about the loosing only. It is the liberation about not having to totally be afraid to eat, but just get into the habit of eating this way for life. You will never look back. You may not loose a pound a week. Take some measurements first and forget the scale for awhile. I was a scale addict and I find it more of a burdin then what it is worth. Get some exercise in, but nothing to hurt yourself over, but something you enjoy. Learn to eat and enjoy on three times a day and look forward to those S days. Mine start today and I have my day all planned out. I wish I new about this 30 years ago. I am 55 and very young and healthy, now my mind is too.
Best of luck to you,
Melanie in Colorado

Welcome, Lisa!
I think you'll be very happy with no-s IF you realize that this is a slow, long term process, and that you're unlikely to lose weight quite as fast as your friend did. Because it's such a moderate system, it's very pleasant to be on, and sustainable over the long term -- but it's also (usually) slow. Some people are lucky and see striking results right away -- but it's best to not to expect that so you aren't disappointed. I'd focus on building habits, on your actual behaviors, rather than a specific goal in pounds lost by a certain date. One concrete way to do this is by marking off days with colored markers or stickers in a calendar: green for success, yellow for exempt S-days, and red for failures ("the habit traffic light"). Any old calendar will do, but I've also created an online version. Those of you who've potty trained small children before might find this technique familiar
. Not terribly flattering, perhaps -- but hey, it clearly works.

Lisa, your friend lost 6 pounds in one week? That's a lot.
I always knew No S was different than other diet plans out there but I didn't realize how much until I started reading the recent posts on the boards. (I'm a long time lurker, recent poster).
I think you might have to revisit your expectations about what "success" looks like. Most people seem to follow this pattern.
First you establish good eating habits. (No snacks, no sweets, no seconds...)
Then you establish good food choices (making those three plates count nutritionally). It's not a rule but since food no longer controls you, it's easier to control food.[/list]
Somewhere in there you establish good exercise ... excuse me movement with purpose.
By taking the focus off the weight and putting it on your choices as so eloquently stated, the weight will take care of itself.
You can do this.
