Rookie Question- please forgive my ignorance

Hello all! I've been lurking on this board for about a week and have found it to be a friendly and supportive group, so I thought I'd jump in with both feet. I'm new to No S, but certainly not new to dieting. If there's a diet out there, I've failed on it. I'm trying to change my attitude this time, hoping the body will then follow. My question is simple. Is it acceptable to have something sweet with your meal on N days or does that break the No Sugar barriar? It seems too good to be true, but I thought it was worth asking about. Thanks in advance to whomever humors me with a reply. :-) ~Mia

Hi Mia!

Welcome and great to have you here :D I hope you will stay awhile and really give No S a shot - it's fantastic and truly hard to go back to other ways of losing weight because nothing compares to the simplicity of the plan. On a side note though, don't feel bad if you mess up, leave and come back. I did! Sometimes it takes a few failures to really "get it" but hopefully you will get it from early on!

As far as sweets on N days, it isn't allowed...unless its something like a teaspoon of sugar in coffee, on oatmeal etc...or definitely some sweet fruit like pineapple is totally acceptable. You will get used to not eating dessert, I don't care for it much so its easy on me, but I find you are so satisfied with the amount you can eat of real foods that sweets aren't as appealing.

Hope you enjoy the board and the fantastic people!

The no sugar thing is not like Atkins or South Beach. There is no restriction on bread or carrots or oranges or anything like that and as Cynthia said, a little sugar in your coffee or on your cereal is ok too. However, donuts, cookies or marshmellow cereals are a no. I think if you ask yourself, is this allowed, you will know the answer by the amount of sugar in it versus nutrition. Reinhard has a good section on sugar in his introduction. Good luck and welcome.

I can't add too much to what everyone else said except that the beautiful idiot otherwise known as reinhardt (his email is beautifulidiot) also notes that peanut butter and jelly is also ok as long as you don't make it a staple in your diet. Also consider that there are a lot of fruits out there. I just had a mango for breakfast and they are really sweet. If you want something kind of like dessert, try cutting a banana in half and rolling each half in chopped peanuts. No wait, you'd really need chocolate to make it stick. Ok skip the peanuts, just cut a banana in half stick a popcicle stick through it and wrap in foil then freeze. I would think also that after a while, you know after you lost say 20 pounds you could occasionally have something sweet on an n day and it wouldn't be too much of a crime, unlike other diets where you actually have to eat less and less as you lose weight. You could also try a fruit flavored tea, or hot coacoa although maybe that would be too close to the line. I have found that I can survive n days better than I thought I could but I speak from the experience of someone who loves loves loves sweet things and doesn't like being told no. So anyway, happy eating. Try slicing
PS sorry for botching this earlier. I hope now it makes more sense.
couple potatoes thin and sprinkling with seasoned salt and pam and nuking in the microwave for 8-10 minutes. Yum.

Thank you all so much for you support and advice! I am sitting here trying to ignore the ice cream calling me. So far, so good. I just filled an ice cube tray with some Watermelon Juice Cocktail. Once they're frozen, I'm hoping that one of those and a chugged bottle of water will satisfy my sweet tooth. Once I get 10% off, I'm going to post my start, current and goal weights on line. I'm not quite ready to admit it outloud to myself yet, let alone publish it for all the world to see! Thanks, again, all. It feels good to have a "home." ~Mia
