some others see the wisdom

I am enrolled in a coach certification course (from a book called Never Binge Again, which is a bit of a lofty title) designed for binge eaters. In it, as the coaches, we deal only with what keeps the client from sticking to a food plan of choice. We might make little suggestions to tweak this and that, but mostly, we guide the client to make her own determination (and later adjust, as necessary.) I would say a surprising number on their own choose three meals a day, no snacks or seconds. A fair of the people there choose to eliminate sweets totally, but that's not required. Anyway, besides that issue, I'm just posting it here because I guess meals/no snacks is an idea out there in the culture. Progress!

It is very encouraging to hear that this way of life is gaining traction. I am dismayed when I see how the perma-snacking culture has gained ground here in Europe, whereas when I first moved here, eating was very meal-bound, and deviations were truly for special occasions. Now food - or the kind of snack products that pass for food - seems to be on offer all over the place. It makes me sad.

You will make an excellent coach!

Thanks, and it's hard to hear about Europe. An ex-colleague and his wife retired to Italy several years ago. On one of his visits, it was noted that he looked like he had lost some weight. He said he had, about 15 lbs. I wouldn't have thought of him as a person to eat gas station food as a rule, but he said it was because food wasn't available everywhere you went. I know Italian children are the heaviest in Europe when they used to be about the slimmest. The young are especially susceptible, especially if the parents buy in. The kids sure don't eat like their grandmothers, who had meals, few sweets, etc.

Sorry to hear about what's happening in Italy. When I was in Italy 15 years ago, almost everyone looked in great shape, walking everywhere, eating great Italian food. You must watch what you eat, there's no getting around it. You can exercise yourself into exhaustion, but if you don't eat right, your results will probably be minimal.

Thanks for that, Soprano. I had written a rather long response but realized it was mostly about ME, so I'm moving it to my check-in thread.
