Hi, everyone,

Reinhard has been so kind to keep the boards going all these years for those of us who shun Facebook. I was wondering, would any of you be interested in joining a No S Whatsapp group if one day the boards were shut down? International folks wouldn't have a problem connecting and we could all have a quick, easy way to contact each other and receive support. We could also do occasional Zoom calls. I have gotten SO much support from these boards and I want to keep that party going should anything ever happen to this gentle, friendly place. Please let me know if you're interested if something like that were to happen. If enough folks are interested in the Whatsapp group, I'll create one and can send the link via private messages.

I would love to hear y'all's thoughts!

I like the idea but if it takes us away from the boards then there is more chance of us losing them.

Just a thought!

Perhaps it's something we can keep in mind if we are told the forum is closing?

Should have clarified that, but yes exactly - - if something were to happen to the boards, we could always move to WhatsApp. I'll go back and edit the original post.

I like the idea of finding a next step from the boards -- I suspect at some point I will not be able to keep them going (though I will try as long as possible, and will certainly at least archive them so all the historical content is still available).

Facebook is a partial solution, but I respect that a lot of people don't like it. I'm not super crazy about it myself. It does have a bit of a community there at this point.

I was thinking reddit maybe? I like their early-internet usenet vibe. But I worry that it seems to techie/masculine for a lot of people. Some everyday systems related reddits have organically emerge there already.

I like reddit and I'm a 37yo female. But it would be hard to share dairy entries there. That would be tough. I just can't bring myself to get back on Facebook. Meta is a predatory company that I just can't support.

What about Skool? I hadn't heard of it until recently. I prefer a forum format but it seems ok.

Oh. My. Gosh. Skool is a GREAT idea, Soprano!!! I would totally be down for that. And it's a great alternative to Facebook.

If that happens, an alternative would be nice. Keep in mind WhatsApp is also Meta. I switched to Signal a few years ago.

Noooooooooooo! That's so horrible to hear. (cue tears). They're everywhere now!!!

I do think Skool is a great idea. I've been in another community there and it's super easy to use and share as a Facebook alternative.

I hadn't heard of Skool. I will have a look as well.
I am pretty much over the common social media platforms. The only ones I use these days are part of the Fediverse: https://jointhefediverse.net/learn/?lang=en-us

They have a replacement for most everything - including a FB-like space called Frendica. I have an account there that I haven't really started to use.

I mentioned in another thread that there is a Federated app for photo sharing called PixelFed. It's like insta - without the ads and algorithm.

Interesting! I hadn't heard of fediverse either... I will add it to my HW list of platforms to check out.
