Hey! I'm new to No S, and was just wondering if anyone had any advice or tips for those like me just getting started.

I've been a compulsive snacker ever since my childhood. Both of my parents suffer from obesity, but my mother just had bariatric surgery. I find it extremely difficult to stick to a diet plan of any kind, especially the ones with counting. I have a very obsessive personality, so any kind of mess up really puts me down.

Starting around 4 years ago and lasting for about a year and a half, I had great success with a modified low carb diet. I lost around 80 pounds and kept it off as long as I was low carbing. However, I found it extremely hard to follow such a diet with the amount of eating out my lifestyle requires. Yes, I could do salads and burgers without buns, but one can only eat so many chicken caesar salads before getting totally burned out.

Since then, I have tried a calorie counting diet, but the obsession of having to count everything I eat and wondering about foods that I wasn't sure of counts on about drove me insane. I've given up on that.

Last week I finally just got fed up with myself. I just looked at myself in disgust in the mirror and decided I had to do something. I struggle a lot with self image and that in turn leads to much discomfort in social situations. Thankfully, the next day I was on a train with my family and happened to glance over at my mother's Woman's World magazine and saw the article about No S. I determined that when I returned home, I was going to start to change something.

So all in all, that brings us to today. I'm hopeful that the community here will provide me with the support I need to FINALLY stick with eating well!

My advice:

1. Follow the rules -- but don't overthink it.
2. Read the book.
3. Don't weigh.

Welcome!

This is going to be a hard habit to break, but it's important. I think for most of us eating between meals is the biggest source of excessive calories by far.

On the bright side, you really won't be depriving yourself of anything by not snacking. Snacking is not really much of a positive pleasure, as sweets and seconds at multi-course meals can be. It's more like scratching an itch. Yes, it can be hard to not scratch that itch. But resist a bit, and the urge goes away. And you'll have lost nothing except the itch itself. You'll have gained the pleasure and freedom of living itch free.
