Question for vegans- maybe TMI :)

Post by Writer110 » Fri Jun 13, 2008 12:28 pm

I've been having some serious stomach problems lately- like things just don't seem to be moving through (if you catch my drift lol!) I rarely eat meat but I was thinking about going all vegan to see if that might help. I am also eating too much overall which I'm sure is not easing the situation either.

So just wondering if any of you vegans have seen an improvement in digestion?

Thank you!

I certainly did when I was eating vegan! But make sure to eat your fruits and veggies. It's not only the fiber, but the high water content of those foods that gets things moving along!

Yeah, I agree with wosnes on the water. Even if you don't go vegan (I am not, BTW), I think it's important for our internal systems to get lots of water to help "move things along"...

Another thing that helps me is walking more...

I'm not vegan, either and you don't need to be vegan or vegetarian -- all you need to do is increase intake of fiber and water-rich fruits and veggies. I find juicy fruits to be very good at this.

Ever heard anyone say they got diarrhea from eating too much watermelon?

I'm not AT ALL vegan
Fiber is the key to a healthy BM.
When my husband followed his colon specialist's recommendation
to have1/2 cup to 1 cup of original All Bran every day at breakfast
His problems disappeared.

I also have found 1/2 cup of original All Bran, or original Fiber One,
along with 1/2 cup of Almond Breeze unsweetened milk (Blue Diamond, comes in a carton on grocery shelf)
to be a delicious high-fiber, low-calorie addition (80 to 100 calories in all) to my meal plan.

Lots of fiber and exercise, but it wouldn't hurt to have a checkup. Any definite change in any part of the body system deserves a look. :)

Thank you so much everyone for your responses! :D

From the looks of it, it may not be WHAT I'm eating- but what I'm NOT eating. I will try to add in more veggies & fiber (this should automatically lesson some of the offenders).

Picked up some salad and vegetables yesterday so hopefully that will help.

Thanks again!

Guinness, one pint thereof. Disclaimer: I have never met anyone else for whom this works.

Haha! That's my favorite suggestion so far! I can definitely implement that!

Also: psyllium capsules (NOW is a good brand), 1-2 a day. Even though I eat veggies out the wazoo, the doc recommended them. Since I never do anything they say without trying it first, I did. Good stuff. You will have lovely velvety poops on a regular schedule.

I don't think I would have thought of that particular phrase to describe poops in a million years! LOL

Another thing I've found that gets things going is a glass of water with fresh lemon juice -- sweetened only a little to taste (only sweetened if needed to make it palatable). Also, fruit smoothies made primarily from watermelon and/or canteloup.

Make sure you are not skimping on liquids; the thing with fiber is that it works wonders if you are properly hydrated, but, it'll plug you up if you are dehydrated.

Great, thank you everyone! I stocked up on vegies so we'll see how this week goes...obviously today being an S-day- not so good! But I'm going to focus on making better choices, without letting myself feel deprived.

Thanks again!
