I have actually highlighted my favourite lines in my copy of the book when I was reading it- now and again I just open it on a random page and read a few lines for inspiration, esp the chapter on building habit. Some of my random favourites:

"You're the boss. You're the trainer.Your appetite is a dumb brute,an animal. You tell it when to get hungry."

For S Days: "Give yourself the best, what you want most"

For excuses: "Nothing is in itself"

And my personal favourite quoted in the book

"Habits are safer than rules;you don't have to watch them. And you don't have to keep them either. They keep you"

Thanks Reinhard!

I've certainly found that after maybe six months or so, I mentally relabelled "being hungry" into "having an appetite", and I've come to really enjoy the sensation of looking forward to a good meal.
Me, too! Dave Mc said it so well....

Hi LA Loser,
I've heard that phrase too! Maybe it's deeply buried in Reinhard's book. It might also be in one of Michael Pollan's books, such as Food Rules, which has 64 "rules".
Here's one I came across in an article I read (ok, ok, it was a quote Corey Haim's trainer told him to help him lose like a hundred pounds. I read it in People  ) But I like it!

"Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels."
The English model Kate Moss said the same thing. I don't think she eats.
Posh Spice, aka Victoria Beckham, says she eats "lots and lots of fruit and vegetables." She's so skinny it's amazing she was able to pop out three kids.

One that's been showing up in the forums lately and I believe originated with KCCC: You can do hard things. I love it because it's honest and acknowledges that sometimes (especially at the beginning), No S can be hard, but it also affirms the power each of us has to do this (and other hard things!)

Yes, that originally came from a post of mine. I'm delighted to see it up here!

Context: It's the answer my husband gives when our son whines "that's too ha-aard," the way that kids do. :) He just calmly replies "You can do hard things." I think it's a GREAT answer, exactly because of what you pointed out - it acknowledges that some things ARE challenging, but also affirms capability. (And it keeps you out of the "that isn't hard/ Is too!" arguement, which isn't worth it..)

I have to tell you that there is no way I could use that one in my high school classes as the double entrendre is all that would get through. (I avoid telling them my sister lives in IdaHO, either.) I'm going to try saying do difficult things.

I guess teens and most others wouldn't respond well to Plato's "All that is beautiful is difficult," either, but that's not a double entendre.

Enough is better than more than enough.

Triggers make me WANT to eat. They cannot MAKE me eat. I can move my hand toward food or away from it.

I use this next one to remind myself that eating is only one part of my life:

"To identify oneself with the body and yet seek happiness is like attempting to cross a river on the back of an alligator." Ramana Maharshi

I've used quotations from Jack Trimpey regarding sobriety, instead replacing it with the word "moderation" with regard to food.

"Even if you have the food in your hand, you can still put it down."

"One can rationally decide to eat moderately at any time."

"You can always refuse to eat immoderately."

That would apply to going off plan for N days of course. Well I suppose it could apply to overindulges on S days as well.

I remember myself of the following when I think that I can't take the "hunger pangs" anymore:

"Man cannot remake himself without suffering, for he is both the marble and the sculptor."- Alexis Carrel

"There's a basic truth here: there are stages of hunger, and we -- Americans -- have become accustomed to feeding ourselves at the first sign. This is the equivalent of taking a nap every time you get tired, which hardly anyone does." (unknown)

And this is about me always worring about tomorrow.. there's only one time I can do something. It's always now now now. So only what I do now, matters! Not what I did yesterday or what I plan on doing tomorrow:

When I am anxious it is because I am living in the future. When I am depressed it is because I am living in the past.
-- Author Unknown

Remember then: there is only one time that is important--Now! It is the most important time because it is the only time when we have any power.
-- Leo Tolstoy

"Yesterday you said tomorrow. Just do it." (Nike)

& of course my signature, always loved that saying!

Oh I just found another collection of quotes lying under my bed..

We are what we repeatedly do, excellence then is not an act, but a habit.
- Aristotle

And I had to think of Reinhard Engels when reading this one, because he was so kind to share what he had accomplished and didn't just keep his success to himself.

"Keep away from people who belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great."
-Mark Twain

And I always have to remind myself that GOOD ENOUGH is all I am asking for.

Not exactly a catch phrase, but years ago I went to a course on eating from hunger that told us to be sure to distinguish between foods that were teasers or pleasers. I see now that that should have covered the refined foods that I felt I was hungry for but ended up overeating. Teasers make you want to eat way more than you're comfortable with. Pleasers do what they say, both when you eat them and later.

Hello to an old thread. I'm basically new to No-S and the motivational quote that keeps coming up in my mind when I think of No-S is, "if we're facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep walking."

(I used to think it was from the Buddha, but apparently it's from Joseph Goldstein, who writes on Buddhism.)

Additional No S?

by SugarFreebie
Not meaning to step on Reinhard's or anyone else's toes; but I thought of a slightly different way to express "Don't Be an Idiot" that really is applicable at any feeding--No Stuffing. Eat until you are satisfied and STOP. I have eaten way past satisfaction innumerable times as part of many years of gluttony and largely destroyed my health in the process. The large amount of food then has led to a large amount of prescriptions now. I am still very new to No S so I am experimenting w/ meal number and size so that I don't go to bed hungry and thereby risk an overnight blood sugar crash.

Never Being an Idiot

Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2016 5:56 pm
by SugarFreebie
For some of us w/ diet-related illnesses being an idiot (which I took to mean gross overindulgence on an S day) is always a terrible choice. I want to keep my blood sugars within a certain range and get my cholesterol and long-battled blood pressure back down to normal; idiocy is a great barrier between me and these goals. I eat very few regular-sugar sweets, having learned to make good ones w/ sugar substitutes (some natural; these are improving all the time) I don't need to take the risk but I am still confining them to S days except for the occasional diet soda. My gluttony has probably already shortened my life; even w/ my 50 lb weight loss over the past year or so I am still plagued w/ diabetic complications. I can't let myself ever be an idiot b/c doing so will kill me that much faster.

As I have followed these topics, I've seen a lot of one-liners/zingers that cut straight to the heart of what we're trying to do. Of course the first is Reinhard's original simple and straightforward eating plan with its fourteen little words and his S day advice as below:

"The No S Diet:
* No Snacks
* No Sweets
* No Seconds
Except (sometimes) on days that start with 'S' "

No
snacks
Sweets
Seconds

I hope we can keep these together.

I"m not sure if I posted this one before, but one I have used often is "All I have to do it get to X,Y, or Z to eat.

All I have to do it get to bedtime.
All I have to do is wait until tomorrow to have a great breakfast.
All I have to do is get to lunch.

Etc.

I find it's helpful to phrase it so that it minimizes the "pain." It's instead of "Aaaagh! I can't eat until X, Y, or Z!" "All I have to do" makes it seem like a minor inconvenience, which it is, rather than an impossible burden/tragedy, which it is not.

Cross posting this from the 2018 challenge.

One piece of advice I read somewhere that has stuck with me is to incorporate changes into your identity. You are not depriving yourself, you are just not that kind of person.

"I'm someone who likes to eat at mealtimes."

"As I get older, I don't drink soda anymore. It taste sickly sweet."

"As a busy mom/executive/athlete/whatever, I don't have time for eating between meals."

"I just don't like getting that weird movie popcorn butter on my hands. I'm the kind of person who would rather enjoy the movie than be chewing."

"I like to eat my meals off nice dishes, with cloth napkins, at the table. We are not the kind of people who eat from containers in this house."

Pick some behavior that would help you improve your eating, then say it to yourself a lot, and to other people, too. I know these can sound kind of snobby, but they work for reframing who I am and what behavior is normal for me. If I violate one of them, I can frame it in my head as "that weird thing I did because I was on a road trip with so-and-so" and not the norm.

Yes, what we say to ourselves is important. Its why I prefer to identify myself as someone who is replacing bad habits with good ones than calling my self a food addict or something similar.

Something weird I do that helps me is that I repeat "no snacks, no sweets, no seconds" silently and tap my thumb to my pinky on "no snacks", thumb to ring finger on "no sweets", and thumb to middle finger on "no seconds". You can see me do this in the wild - usually at work - when someone offers me sweets. It gives my brain something else to do.
