89 year old doctor remains fit
Brice Dickson might look like twins in this mirror image but he’s only one. When asked if he were a twin, he grinned and said: “Well, I’m old enough to be.â€
Actually, this almost 90-year-old retired Gastonia doctor figures his dedication to health issues has kept him as clean and strong and healthy as a young tree in the sun.
“I doubt that I’d be around now,†he said, “if I hadn’t been as dedicated to my health as I have been.â€
Dickson, a resident of Covenant Village, rises from his downy pad about 4 a.m. almost every day of the week. He fixes himself a hot cup of coffee, relaxes with it and heads to Covenant’s Fitness Center. Then, for two hours, he mixes yoga with pushups, sit-ups, treadmill and working with a medicine ball and a handful of other exercises that would have a younger man puffing.
By the time 7:30 arrives, he also has taken a swim, taken a bath, shaved and dressed for the day. The dining hall opens at 7:30, and he usually is there when it opens. He eats a healthy meal, has another cup of coffee and heads back to his apartment for a brief rest period.
At some time during the day, he will head for the Clay Street track where he will be joined by a handful of other walkers who, with him, have been walking there for 30 years.
He eats three meals a day, “and no in-betweens,†he said. Being a doctor, he knows what foods and drinks he should have available. He is in bed by 7 or 8 p.m., and ready to rise at 4.
“He is an inspiration for all of us,†one of Dickson’s friends said as Dickson headed for the swim pool.
