Snacking in school

And I don't mean elementary school, I mean college. I just received a text message from my sister that read, "I love my teacher so much, she brought in chips and soda and we're watching a movie! I feel like I'm in kindergarten at snack time!"
I'm not sure whether the movie or snacking is more ridiculous, but I'll focus on the latter. My sister is on the east coast, so it's 12:30 PM there now, which means its lunchtime. Why is the teacher bringing chips and soda during lunchtime? If there has to be food during this movie, why couldn't she bring lunch food?
Another thing that struck me was my sister's reaction: I feel like I'm a kindergartener at snack time! Snacks, to me, have come to seem pretty childish indeed. When I hear an adult talk about wanting or needing or eating a snack, I sort of want to roll my eyes, because unless there's some kind of dire situation where said adult won't be eating dinner until 10pm, they'll probably be able to make it without a snack. This leads me to wonder, though, if so many people are unwilling to give up snacks or love snacks so dearly because they're comforting and they remind of childhood. I know if I sat down after work to a Little Debbie snack cake, I'd be taken right back to first grade when my grandmother would give me one after school.
