Most people don't need snacks -- we need three meals daily. Part of the rationale is that we aren't active enough to warrant the extra calories. If we do need to snack, it should be 150-200 calories. Link to the piece.
Having said that -- and this sounds silly -- we also need to make sure we consume enough calories. My neighbor is actively trying to lose weight. She's been losing, but the nutritionist she sees suggested a fourth meal because she wasn't consuming enough calories. She's losing more quickly now.
I've just recently added more calories, usually in the form of breakfast -- which I eat after I've been up for 2-3 hours. To be fair, my level of activity has increased recently, too. I'm losing more weight!
