I eat oatmeal in the mornings and was just wondering is a bowl considered a plate and therefore you just eat what's in that bowl or do you place the bowl on a plate and put food around it

Depends on your needs and where you are in the process.
I doctor my oatmeal a fair amount so I don't usually need something else, but if your normal bowl leaves you too hungry before lunchtime, go ahead and put the bowl on a plate and add something else to it. You can always pare down your meals later.

If I just have a bowl of oatmeal (or anything else), I just have the bowl. If I'm having oatmeal, toast and fruit, the bowl goes on a plate along with the toast and fruit.

OK. I was wondering about a soup & sandwich lunch; guess that would be the same?

The short answer: yes.

For new folks, Welcome,
One of the nice things about No S is the idea that it is flexible. I think, in my opinion, that a bowl of oatmeal (yuck) on a plate, with other items would be a plate. Sometimes I go with three meals a day, I may have a bowl of soup and a sandwich. I count it as one plate. Same thing goes with restaurant food most of the time. If the dinner comes with a side salad I eat it with the entree as one plate plate or meal.
One.of the things you don't want yo do.is turn.No S into something tedious, like Atkins or Dr. Mcdougalls diet. Have fun with it.

Even if it was a 3 course dinner I would count it as "one plate."
