Guess what I got for my birthday?

Yes, the 20 pounder. It doesn't feel that bad. Nothing like the percentage-wise much bigger jump from 12 to 16 I made 2 about years ago. Still, I'm planning on making this a very gradual upgrade. I'll post details here, of course.

Congratulations! That's a HUGE sledgehammer, right now I couldn't even imagine using the 16 pounder... I'm impressed!

Well, despite all my wise, sober, promises, I overdid it a little.

I was surprised at how relatively easy it seemed. I was able to do a full 21-14-7 routine (5b, plus 14 firemans and chop trees), with all my usual movements. It was hard, but good-hard. Until a couple hours later. Then I felt a little "tweakiness" in my back. Not much, but I'm very cautious about this stuff. It's been months if not years since I felt even a little tweakiness, so I'm going to take today off, per my red, bold-face advice.

Hey Raginhard!
Why not just use the 20 lb one for straight up down stuff which won't hurt your back or shoulder...
Churning butter and Hoist the Sack are the closest to your midline...
When you go away from your midline, the force increases with every inch away from your body... That's one hefty hammer, so good for you for heeding your body's signals... Your red bold advice is good advice!
You will build up your strength gradually... promise!!!!

Just wanted to let you guys know everything's been going well since that little tweak last week. It's been really difficult to restrain myself in my enthusiasm, but I have -- and haven't felt the slightest hint of "tweakiness." I force myself to alternate between the 16 and 20 pounders, warming up with the 16 (astonishing how easy that feels already), and doing fewer, slower, more conscious reps with the 20.

That's awesome, Reinhard. I've decided myself to pick up a 16 pounder next payday. I wish someone made one with a wooden handle....

I'll probably also pick up a 12 pounder someday, that way I'd have 8, 10, 12, 16. Maybe even 20 eventually.

But for now, I'll use the 16 and the 10 pounder for most routines, I think.

That's a big jump, Feakwitch! Bigger than my biggest jump, from 12 to 16. I know you know this, but it can't hurt to hear it again and again and again: be very careful.

Nothing exciting to report on my own upgrade: I've worked my way up almost to my full old 16 pounder routine with the 20 pounder. I keep having to remind myself to go slow... but I guess I'm going slow enough, I feel great, and nothing hurts.

I don't even know how you guys pick a 20lb up let alone swing it around!!

I picked up the smallest one I could find a few weeks ago - 8lb and I battled to lift it a few times, never mind swing one with any safety!

I thought of buying it to try out, but I was still not sure and I did not have the R200.00 ($30) to get it.

Congrats on being able to use the 16lb & 20lb.

Hi Reinhard, don't forget I have a 3 pound ankle weight on my 10-pounder, so I'd actually be going from a 13 pounder to the 16 pounder. When I do get the 16 pounder, though, I'll remove the ankle weight from the 10 pounder.

It took a couple of months, but I can now do routine "6" M-W-F and "5b" (plus some freestyle) T-Th with the 20 pounder. This is about where I was before with the 16 pounder (except that with the 16 pounder I could actually do 5 consecutive days of "6," though I didn't usually). So I guess I got 25% stronger in 2 months :-). Not a bad way to start the new year. Time for a nice long leisurely plateau...

No back twinges or anything since that first week.

You Rock Rein!!!!!

So???
When's the arm wrestling rematch with your Brother?

LOL..
I told one of my clients about SG today.. He asked me to show him how to do it.. LOL..
But he thought that when you "chop wood" you actually use an ax.. So we had some confusion for a while till I realized he didn't understand..
He said.."How do you cover up the blade?".. That tipped me off..

I'm happy for you!
Peace and Glove,
