SG + Event training?

Has anyone here tried SG + training for a marathon, century bicycle ride or similar?

I started SG after Thanksgiving and have stuck with it pretty well, but it still wears me down by the end of the week. ( primarily I notice muscle fatigue by Thursday night) Two weeks ago, I started training for the Seattle to Portland bike ride, and now my body is protesting. My training schedule is to ride W/Sa/Sun, so I'm doing something every day. My guess is that I need at least 1 rest day, so I'm planning on a 4 day SG schedule this week.

Has anyone else combined two types of training like this?

TIA,

Russ

Hi Russ,

I haven't done anything comparable, but I guess I'd suggest the following possibilities

1) skip shugging on the days when you're doing you're training (sounds like what you're doing already). If you're using the habitcal and worried what to put down, simply track "exercise" or "14minutesOfSomething" and give yourself credit for whatever kind you do there.

2) Keep shugging every N-day, but remember that not all 14 minutes have to be equally intense. My Friday routine tends to be much more relaxed than my Monday or Tuesday.

Good luck!

Reinhard

So far I've been experimenting with different schedules, and I'll try to update this thread with any conclusions about what works for me.

I find that I need 2 days of total rest after two long rides (Sat/Sun), so that puts me at 3 SG days max. It is probably a bit much to ask my aging body to acclimate to SG and long distance riding at the same time. :)

My guess is that I'll end up with 2 - 3 days SG on top of my 3 day riding schedule for 1 rest day, after I've improved my fitness level, but only time will tell.

Well, I completed my bicycle ride from Seattle to Portland, and frankly did a bit better than expected. Except for some muscle fatigue, I felt fine afterward, and I'm already planning for next year.

I eventually gave up SG altogether while training. I was pushing so hard on the bike, that I had nothing left to give to my hammer. 1 week after the event though, I hauled my trusty sledge out and started swinging. I started ramping up with a 10 minute routine, which seems easier than I thought it would be. Perhaps I kept some of my upper body fitness as a side effect of riding 6 - 8 hours s week. In any case, I hope to be back to 14 X 5 soon.

In conclusion, I'm not sure I have one! I did determine that *I* couldn't SG and train at the same time, but I was starting from a low level of fitness. YMMV
