I found this useful ... Google Maps lets you click to define your walking route and then it shows how far you have walked in miles or kilometers.

Justin posted a similar link a little while ago:

But this looks better (at least for North Americans not residing in Hoboken), because it starts zoomed out.
Very cool stuff. Thank you!

I love that it gives you a tinyurl for your walk.
Here's mine from Sunday:

I hadn't noticed tinyurl here (or anywhere) before... what a cool idea.
For the similarly ignorant, read more here:

Tinyurl is cool!

Yup, tinyurl is very cool.
It lets you make a short easy to use URL out of these long cryptic URLs that various web sites can generate. They are much easier to type and send around, as sometimes line breaks mess up the URLs when you are copying and pasting them, and retyping these long crazy URLs is just about impossible.
Would it be too geeky to say that it might be interesting to see some of the tinyurls of people's walks, if they use the Googlemap pedomoter? You can create one automatically right from the map site.
I lived in Boston/Brookline for years and worked in Cambridge. I'd be intersted to especially see anyone's walks in that area (hint, hint.)

Oh, this is good. I can't justify buying a pedometer right now, and trying to figure out how far I've walked with maps and rulers and calculators is a pain in the behind.
I did so much walking in Vancouver and I'd really like to figure out how far I acutally went.
